Awareness Camp for the Welfare of Transgender Persons organized in the Centre for Human Rights and Duties, PU
Permanent Anti-Discrimination Cell for Transgender Students, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Department of Social Welfare and Child Development, Chandigarh Administration today organised “Awareness Camp for the Welfare of Transgender Persons”.
Professor Namita Gupta, Chairperson Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Coordinator, Permanent Anti-Discrimination Cell shared with the audience that PU has established a Permanent Anti-Discrimination Cell for Transgender Students at the Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University to deal with the issues and challenges faced by transgender students in the campus.
Mr. Amit, Counsellor, Department of Social Welfare and Child Development, discussed about the rights of Transgenders. He elaborately explained the definition of transgender and various schemes that have been initiated for their welfare. He explained that how the transgenders have been victimised for long and were excluded from the mainstream. He stated that the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 protects the community from discrimination, and recognize their identity. He also shared that under AAUSHMAN Scheme all the medical expenditure has been covered that include their sex change treatment, hormonal operation and counselling.
Yashika, former transgender student at Centre for Human Rights and Duties shared her life experiences and how difficult it is for a transgender to cope up with various challenges.
The programme was attended by faculty members, research scholars and students from various departments of Panjab University. The members of the cell Dr Upneet Kaur Mangat and Dr Rajesh Chander were also present in the awareness camp.
