Author’s Workshop starts in PU Chandigarh

A Two days workshop on the Theme ‘Writing Original Textbooks in Punjabi Language’ under the flagship of Bhartiya Bhasha Samvardhan Samiti, MOE, Govt. of India, started in Panjab University (PU) Chandigarh, today.

Workshop was started with the recitation of the University Anthem. Local coordinator, Prof Gurpal Singh of DES-MDRC gave a glimpse and information of this two days workshop; its genesis, history, perspectives and prospects. Key purpose of this BBSS-workshop is to publish 200 textbooks encompassing humanities, science, commerce, law, agriculture and other disciplines in the next four years. This workshop is totally funded by the central Government.

In her inaugural address, Prof Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor of the university said that this workshop is different in nature and the first time in the history of Punjab which emphasises on writing the textbooks in their own language. Students and common people can better understand in his native language. She said that textbooks must be of the people, by the people and for the people.       

Prof. Amarjeet Grewal, an eminent Scholar said that writing textbooks in the Punjabi language is the need of the hour. Knowledge in one’s own language can be grasped easily.    

In his presidential address, Dr. Jagbir Singh, Chancellor CUP Bathinda said that Indian Knowledge Tradition (IKT) is a treasure of wisdom, skillfullness, history, culture and ethics. IKT is homocentric, cosmos centric and environment oriented in nature. NEP-2020 is an effort to re-implement the Indian Knowledge Tradition along with modern education.

Mr. Jaswant Zafar, Director Language Dept. Punjab also spoke on the occasion.

In the three sessions, many resource persons gave instructions, guidance, suggestions, frameworks, tools and techniques to the authors.

Dr. Gurpal Singh of DES-MDRC, Prof. Amreek Singh Ahluwalia VC Eternal University Talwandi Sabo, Prof. Priyatosh Sharma of History Dept PU, Dr. Rajeev Kumar of MM Modi College Patiala, Dr. Manjinder Singh of School of Punjabi Studies Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar were resource persons/ Mentors/Instructors.

More than 50 authors of different disciplines from across the Punjab attended the workshop.

At the end of session, Dr. Sukhwindar Singh gave a vote of thanks to all the authors, dignitaries and audience.

Conference on Environmental Sustainability and Indian Knowledge Systems Concludes at PU

The Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, successfully concluded its National Conference on “Indian Knowledge System for Environmental Sustainability, Climate Action & Eco-Human Health” on September 21, 2024. The two-day event, held in partnership with Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi (PSG) and the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh, brought together over 200 participants from across India. Dr. Ritu Gupta welcomed the delegates and Prof Suman Mor, Convenor of conference introduced about conference theme.

The conference commenced with an inspiring inaugural session by Chief Guest Shri. T.C. Nautiyal, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests, Member Secretary, Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee. He emphasised that people are aware already but need to move towards action, and everyone must take initiative to ensure clear environment in their surroundings.

Shri Gopal Arya, National Convenor, PSG, emphasised on the need of attitude change and holistic approach to achieve clean environment. Prof Amit Chauhan, DSW highlighted best practices followed in Panjab university for environment conservation.

Keynote speeches by renowned experts, covered a wide range of topics such as the National Education Policy and Environment Education, Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE), and sustainable waste management practices. A highlight of the conference was the diverse array of research showcased through poster presentations, demonstrating cutting-edge approaches to environmental sustainability and eco-human health. The first day concluded with a vibrant cultural evening, celebrating the rich diversity of Indian traditions and their connection to environmental stewardship. Prof. Yajwinder Pal Verma highlighted effort of Panjab university to become a role model in environmental conservation, plastic recycling, waste management and bicycling.

The second day maintained the momentum with session on Integrating Ved, Vigyan, And Paryavaran for Sustainable. Swami Vagish Swarop, talked about the traditional knowledge and practices of paryavaran sanrakshan in our Bhartiya Sanskriti. Swami Rajeshwaranand ji emphasised on protection of tree and related that how tree play important role in our life and how our religion played important role in conservation of environment. Prof. H.D. Charan talked about Harmonious Coexistence with Nature, and cyclic nature of life. He emphasised that disturbing one component could lead to disturbance of whole ecosystem, so coexistence play important role. Prof Sanjay Kaushik emphasized that we need to work collectively for environment conservation and sustainable future.

The conference concluded with an awards ceremony for oral and poster presentation recognizing outstanding contributions, followed by a vote of thanks by Prof. Suman Mor, highlighted the conferences was a success to empathize on innovative green solutions for air pollution and waste management and understanding the role of Indian traditional system for environment conservation. This conference serves as a crucial platform for bridging traditional wisdom with modern scientific approaches to address our pressing environmental concerns,” Dr Rajeev Kumar, Chairperson, DEVS stated.
