The Department of Statistics is organizing a Workshop on SPSS for 8 days from December 04 – 12, 2019 (excluding Sunday) in the Computer Laboratory (Ground Floor), Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh.


        This course shall be open to all faculty members/research scholars of Panjab University, PGIMER/GMCH Doctors (having basic knowledge of Statistics) and for the faculty members of the neighboring institutes actively involved in research. Teachers/researchers from Economics, Home Science, Management and Social Sciences can
also participate in this workshop.

Workshop on SPSS


        A registration fee of Rs. 2000/- (Rs. Two Thousand only) will be charged in cash with the application form, which will be refunded to those who are not selected. The last date for receipt of application form as per attached proforma is 02. 12. 2019 (Monday) by 5.00 p.m. sharp in the office of the Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The form can also be downloaded from the notice board of the departmental webpage on Panjab University website.


        The selected participants are advised to bring a personal laptop loaded with SPSS. The selection will be on first come first served basis. The selected candidates will be informed through e-mail or phone or they can enquire from the office of the Department of Statistics (Phone: 0172-2541776) about their selection.

PUAA to host First Ever Annual Global Alumni Meet

PUAA to host First Ever Annual Global Alumni Meet

 Panjab University Alumni Association (PUAA), Chandigarh is hosting first ever 2 day Annual Global Alumni Meet on 28-29, November, 2019 at PU Law Auditorium. 


        The Guest of Honours of the event would be Mr. Sunil Arora, Chief Election Commissioner of India and Mia Yen, Consul General of Canada in Chandigarh. The Chief Guest is PU Alumnus and has shown his interest to visit Hostel No. 1, where he was staying for few months. Similarly, there are other Alumni who would be visiting their hostels for a nostalgic trip. Various distinguished Alumni will be honoured at the event.


         Prof. Deepti Gupta, informed that the main objective behind organizing this event is to revive all alumni chapters spread all over India and the ones established overseas. Already 250 confirmations with families have been received from India and 7 countries including US, UK, Canada, Philippines, Singapore, New Zealand and Afghanistan.


        During the two day event, there will be academic interactions apart from cultural and an award ceremony. A separate session on brand building for higher education institutes is being organized and will have presence of Mr. Sandeep Goyal, Advertising Veteran,  and Mr. Harit Nagpal, CEO, Tata Sky. 


        Light, Sight and Sound play ‘Sat Guru Nanak Pargatya’ is also being organized to commemorate 550 years of Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Law Auditorium. Lectures by prominent scholars are being planned on the same which is being coordinated by University Institute of Fashion and Technology, PU.


        To mark 100 years of PU Honours School, a special programme of Lanterns and Lights is being organized in the Campus. Similarly, a panel discussion on ‘My Vision of PU 2025’ will have Professor Emeritus and former VCs of PU.


        A special exhibition of rare International Cartoons and Postal Stamps on Mahatma Gandhi by Dr. Surjit K. Dass is already displayed at Gandhi Bhawan to commemorate 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi. This exhibition will be open till 29th November, 2019.


        PU Alumni House and Gandhi Bhawan are decorated with lights to welcome the Alumni for Global Alumni Meet.

Samvidhan Divas observed at PU

Chandigarh November 26, 2019

Panjab University, Chandigarh  today observed the Samvidhan Divas by taking an oath pronouncing the preamble to the Constitution of India collectively by Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instructions, PU in the presence of Prof. R.K. Singla, Dean Research, Sh. Muneeshwar Joshi, Secretary to Vice Chancellor and all officials of VC office.

Similar oath was taken at the Administrative Block by Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Prof. Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examination, Sh. Vikram Nayyar, Finance & Development Officer in the presence of officials of the Administrative Block.
The faculty, staff members and students of various departments of PU similarly took an oath on the occasion of 70th Constitution Day of India observed as Samvidhan Divas.

PU Student Centre Pond decorated with Graffiti

On the recommendations of the Committee constituted by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor under the Chairmanship of Prof. Harsh Nayyar, Department of Botany to assist Horticulture Division for making graffiti at the Student Centre pond. The necessary help by the Deptt. of Arts History & Visual Arts, PU was provided and a graffiti workshop was organised in collaboration with Horticulture Division on 23-24 November, 2019.


        The Horticulture Division provided the material for the workshop and prepared the background for conducting the workshop by cleaning the area including the minor repairs of the pond and removing the wild growth. The walls of the pond were filled with the required material by the Horticulture Division for making the surface smooth so that the graffiti should look impressive. All the material as requested by the Deptt. of Arts History & Visual Arts like paints, brushes, papers, stainers of different colours, spray paints etc. were supplied by the Horticulture Division.


        About 25 participants (students) displayed their skills in the workshop. They were served lunch and refreshments by the Horticulture Division. Their paintings depicted the message of cleanliness in the Campus through cartoon and other means. Due care was taken that the graffiti should focus on the theme of cleanliness and banning the use of plastic in the Campus. Due care was also taken that the banned items of single use plastic like disposable plates, cups etc. were not used during the workshop.

Seminar on Academic writings concluded at PU


On the concluding day of Two days seminar cum workshop on “Academic writings: addressing the contemporary challenges” organized by department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Prof. S. Srinivas Rao from Jawaharlal University, Delhi addressed  “Academic Integrity as Essential Element in Academic Publications, here today.

Dr. Rao linked the role of society in ensuring academic integrity. He was critical for the role of teachers and supervisors in inculcating moral and ethical values in their students to ensure academic integrity. He further suggested “Double Blind Process” in order to curb the maniac of predatory journals leading to the earlier “Pay and Publish system”. He outlined five basic fundamental values in research consisting of honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility.

Prof. Manish Jain, from B. R Ambedkar University addressed ‘Nuances of quality writing and publishing in quality journals’. He shared his experiences and mentioned Prof. Avijit from JNU and expected the participants to take their position while writing a research paper and emphasised on the importance of understanding a reader so as to know
how to pitch and where to pitch?

Prof. Jayanti Dutta discussed essential steps in writing a book review as a creative exercise.

Seminar on Academic writings concluded at PU

Prof. Shobha Sinha Chairperson, Central Institute of Education, University of Delhi discussed the contents of academic writing, writing processes and concerns of author. She emphasized on reader friendly writing and cohesion in writing. She narrated stories to make context interesting.

Valedictory address was given by Prof. R.K. Kohli, Senior Ecologist and Vice Chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Bhatinda. He deliberated on the need of writing good quality research papers and what are factors which are affecting the quality of our publication.

Prof. Sanjay Kaushik, UBS, Dean, College Development Council, Panjab University, Honorary Director, NWRC, ICSSR, Panjab University in his remarks emphasised the role of academic writings in understanding the
social issues.

2 days seminar on Academic writings commenced at PU

Prof. Krishna Kumar, Padma Shri, Former Director NCERT, Honorary Professor, Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh emphasised the need of writings and drafting of the writing again and again to make it publishable, at the inaugural session of 2 days National Seminar cum Workshop on Academic Writings: Addressing the
contemporary challenges” organized by Department of Education, here today. He mentioned   the detailed processes and the importance of academic writings in communicating our ideas. He showed his concern on the declining quality of publications in the present day.   He emphasised that writing is an expression of thought where one has to actively understand reach to the mind of the reader. Prof. Shankar ji  Jha  Dean University Instructions and officiating Vice Chancellor in his address said that  interdisciplinary research is need of the hour and expressed his concern  that Sanskrit has been neglected and needs to be bought to mainstream research area. He also mentioned that scholarly articles are the bridge to express our heritage and modern work.

Professor Lakhwinder Singh, Professor of Economics, Punjabi University, Patiala discussed that, to become a successful writer, the two lessons he learnt   that writing first line is the most difficult and right timing is very important for a writer to get his articles published. He extensively talked about the new era of knowledge economy where education has been transformed from being a public good to commercial/private good thus, has to a large extent been a stumble block in learning. Earliler, Dr. Kuldeep Kaur, Associate Professor, gave a brief introduction for the program and highlighted the various challenges associated with academic writing. Prof. Latika Sharma, Chairperson, Department of Education, Panjab University paid gratitude to CALEM for bringing together the educationists of high repute for sharing their knowledge. Prof.  Satvinderpal Kaur, program coordinator Department of Education introduced the theme of the program explaining the purpose and objectives of the two days. Panel discussion on Contemporary Challenges before Academic writers was chaired by Professor Kuldip Puri, USOL, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Professor Devinder Singh, Department of Law, Panjab University, Chandigarh discussed the issues of Plagiarism and Academic Integrity.

Special lecture on the development of Urdu Language at PU

“Urdu is a language of Hindus and Sikhs and this fact should be given adequate space is the history of Urdu language and its literature”, said Prof. Zia-ur-Rehman Siddiqui from Aligarh Muslim University while delivering a special lecture on the development of Urdu language organized by Department of Urdu, Panjab University Chandigarh Dr. Siddiqui said that Guru Nanak Dev Ji preached his holy message in a language of the people which included a number of words from Arabic and Persian languages.He added that Bhartendu Harish Chander, Munshi Harsukh lal, Munshi Prem Chand, Munshi Naval Kishore, Kanwar Rajinder Singh Bedi and many others had contributed immensely for the promotion
of Urdu in India. He laid stress on the promotion of translation work from Panjabi and Hindi and vice-versa.

On this occasion three books written by Dr. Ali Abbas, Coordinator of the department of Urdu were also released. Dr. Ali Abbas lauded the creative activities of Dr. Siddiqui, who started his teaching career from the Department of Urdu, Panjab
University, some 20 years back, Among others Dr, Zarreen Fatima  from Department of Urdu and Mr  Jatinder Parvaz from  the Haryana Urdu Academy  were also present.

Seminar at PU

Chandigarh November 21, 2019

The Centre for Police Administration and National Cadet Corps, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Panchnad Research Institute organized a seminar cum special lecture titled “Sacha Sauda: Vand Chhako ki Vartman Prasangita” on the occasion of the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji. The occasion was graced by Prof. Karamjit Singh, Registrar, Panjab University. He illustrated the relevance of the concept of Sacha Sauda in current times. He mainly focussed on the principles of Sacha Sauda i.e. Value, Dharma, Karam and Discipline.

        Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Chairperson, Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University welcomed the key speaker and introduced the topic of the lecture. 


        The lecture was attended by Prof. A.S. Aluhwalia, Department of Botany, Prof Anil Monga, Police Administration, Dr. Sanjeev Ranjan, Dr. Arvind and researcher scholars and students of MA Police Administration and NCC cadets.

Special lecture at AIHCA, PU

Chandigarh November 21, 2019

  The Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology, Panjab University, Chandigarh   on the eve of “Heritage Week” organized a special lecture on “Introduction to Prehistoric Stone Tools”  by Dr. Parth R. Chauhan, Faculty, Humanities and Social Sciences, IISER,Mohali. In his illustrated talk he introduced students to variety of stone tools.

  According to him, the cave sites are the best preserved sites to study stone tools.  He threw light on how  the changing environment influenced the tool making.  The students were given hand on experience on tool handling and identification.  Dr. Banani Bhattacharya, Deputy Director, Archaeology and Museum, Haryana spoke on the outline of
Prehistory of India and informed students about the importance of this period to know about the culture of those times.The lecture was attended by faculty members, students and research scholars of Panjab University.
