For Detailed

Shimla, July 29, 2022:
The Robotic Surgery team at Fortis Hospital Mohali has revolutionized treatment of various complex diseases in Urology, Gynaecology, Cancer, Head &Neck; and Gastroenterology through the world’s most advanced 4th Generation Robot – Da Vinci Xi.Theteam of doctors from a wide spectrum of specialties hassuccessfully performed more than 300 complex robotic surgeries at Fortis Mohali.

Robotic Surgeryhas been established as the gold standard treatment for urological-prostate surgeries such as Radical Prostatectomy, Nephrectomy andgynaecological surgeries such as fibroids, endometriosis, hysterectomy etc. The advanced surgical procedure has better clinical outcomes compared to conventional surgeries as it ensures less blood loss, less pain, less scarring, shorter hospital stayand faster recovery.

Dr Swapna Misra, Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department, Fortis Mohali, who is also a Robotic Laparoscopic and Cancer Surgeon, recently treated a 67-year-old woman based in Shimla, through Robotic Surgery.

The Patient had reached menopause more than 15 years ago, but recentlyexperienced light bleeding (spotting) along with pelvic pressure and backache. She met Dr Misraat Fortis Mohaliand underwent uterus removal through Robotic Surgeryin June this year. She was discharged the following day. The Patienthas recovered completely and was able to resume her normal daily activities within a week of the surgery.

Discussing the case, Dr Misra, said, ‘“Almost all gynaecological surgeries — fibroids, endometriosis, vesico-vaginal fistula, ovarian cyst, salpingo-oophorectomy, myomectomy, hysterectomy and all cancers of the uterus, ovary and cervix – can be done through Robotic Surgery.”

Dr Manish Ahuja, Senior Urologist, Department of Urology, Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, Fortis Mohali, recently performed a high-risk, robot-assistedRadical Prostatectomy.

A 63-year-old patient had frequent urination and was in extreme discomfort. A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test showed that the patient’s serum levels were elevated. A biopsy revealed prostate cancer (Stage 1). To remove the tumour, Dr Ahuja and his team performed a Radical Prostatectomy through robot-assisted arms. The diseased gland was removed and the urinary bladder was stitched back to the urinary passage. The patient had a smooth post-operative recovery period and was discharged five days after his surgery.

Discussing the case, Dr Ahuja, said, “The prostate is the male reproductive gland which can enlarge due to hormonal changes after the age of 50. At times these enlargements can be cancerous in nature. However, if detected in time, the gland can be removed and the cure for cancer is achieved. Robotic Surgery is the latest form of minimal invasive surgery and provides a 3D view of the operative field via a special camera inserted into the body of the patient. Parts of the body which are difficult to reach with the human hand can be accessed through robot-assisted arms that can rotate 360 degrees.”

DOCTORS AT FORTIS HOSPITAL, MOHALI SAVE A SEPTUAGENARIAN PATIENT FROM A DEADLY STROKE

Mandi, January 20

For Detailed News-

Stroke is one of the most common causes of mortality and handicap in the elderly population but miracles do happen: Dr. Amit Shankar Singh

A 73-year elderly male patient Mr. Gian Chand from Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh (HP) reached Fortis Hospital Mohali with a history of headache for the last 4 days and inability to speak since morning. The patient was evaluated in detail by Associate Consultant Neurology, Fortis Hospital, Mohali Dr. Amit Shankar Singh. On diagnosis, it was found that the patient had Aphasia (inability to speak), right facial weakness, and right-sided Hemiparesis (Paralysis).

Dr. Amit immediately ordered a CT Scan of the Head, which showed a large haemorrhagic infarction (both bleeding and clotting) in the left front parietal region of the brain. Swelling around the affected area was causing the mid-line to shift into another side of the brain. This was an unusual type of stroke, as it was showing both clots and bleeding in the brain. Because of the large size of this lesion, the condition of the patient worsened very fast and he became unconscious and started having fits. The patient was immediately put on a ventilator, shifted to Neuro-ICU, and put on medications to decrease swelling.

To find out the exact cause and nature of the disease, a brain MRI with MR Venography was done. According to Dr. Amit, such large infarctions with haemorrhage are not that common in most patients and patients can be saved even without surgery also, if the cause is diagnosed. In this patient, Brain MRI showed venous infarction along with thrombosis (blockage) in the left transverse and sigmoid sinus, and hence there was an obstruction in veins (vessels taking blood from the brain back to the heart), rather than arteries (which bring blood from heart to brain).

Arterial clots are common and very dangerous, whether it’s brain or heart. In the heart, they cause heart attacks and in the brain, they commonly cause brain attack or brain stroke. But venous infarctions are also now recognized commonly and they can be managed if rightly diagnosed and treated timely with appropriate medications.

Based on these findings, the patient was immediately put on anti-coagulants (the drugs which dissolve clots in veins of the brain very effectively), along with medications to control fits besides medications to decrease swelling in the brain. With this treatment, the patient responded well. Slowly, his fits were brought under control, he became conscious and movements of his right side of the body also started. Repeat brain imaging showed a decrease in the mid-line shift, decrease in swelling of the brain. The patient was tracheotomised and finally taken off the ventilator. His weakness also improved gradually and was discharged on medications with few tubes to assist feeding and urination.

After one month, what seemed a pure miracle was that the patient came in OPD walking on his own. He was able to eat and speak properly after his tracheostomy was removed. Dr. Amit told that the patient’s family members were very happy, especially the granddaughter, who herself is in the medical profession, as she never thought that his grandfather will recover completely without going through any major handicap. According to Dr. Amit, such cases give hope to all of us that patients with stroke can be revived, if taken care of on time, and also the right diagnosis is of the foremost importance.

It is worth mentioning that Dr. Amit Shankar Singh is a well-known neurologist from Tricity, trained in very reputed institutes of India. He had his thesis on Stroke and has a special interest in Stroke Management. In Fortis Hospital, Stroke Management is at the topmost level. All recent advances in the Management of Stroke are available in Fortis Hospital Mohali, with well-trained doctors.

Don’t Let Pandemic Deter You From Seeking IVF Treatment: Dr. Pooja Mehta

·         Have safe IVF treatment during Covid, follow guidelines

·         No sufficient evidence to prove that Covid positive pregnant mother can pass on infection to child

·         Fortis Bloom IVF centre, Fortis Hospital, Mohali share tips to have safe pregnancy through IVF during Covid times

Shimla, December 21, 2020: The current pandemic should not be a deterrent in making couples seeking parenthood opt for IVF treatment. In times when almost 1 in every 6 couples in-country is looking for an infertility solution, corona spread comes as a testing time. Fertility problems and IVF are already stressful. Now, throw a pandemic like COVID-19 in this scenario, and the mind may go into an all-out tailspin.

For Detailed News-

Dr. Pooja Mehta, Senior Consultant, Gynaecologist & IVF Specialist at Fortis Bloom IVF Centre, Fortis Hospital, Mohali Chandigarh said that couples now need not curtail their happiness out of scare of Covid infection.

She explained it is understandable for couples to wonder if this is the best time for embryo retrieval or transfer. She advised against delaying the IVF treatment as the majority of patients of reproductive age are generally not in the high-risk group (vis-à-vis high-risk groups of Covid). So, it is not necessary to delay the treatment cycle or IVF consultation at this time.

https://propertyliquid.com

Explaining the impact of Corona on fertility she said that currently, there was limited evidence regarding the association between fertility and coronavirus. But, we do know that infections may cause high fever, which could affect fertility treatment, she added.

A study has suggested that high fever during the IVF cycle or egg freezing may require a higher need for medications, a lower number of retrieved eggs, and a longer cycle. However, there’s no evidence suggesting that COVID-19 fever has an impact on fertility.

Similarly, she dispelled the fears that Covid may hamper pregnancy. She explained it was seen that the risk of COVID infection in the pregnant female is the same as compared to a non-pregnant female. Besides, there is no sufficient evidence that suggests that pregnant women can pass COVID infection to their babies. Also, coronavirus is not present in breast milk or amniotic fluid. Looking at these facts, it is highly unlikely that COVID-19 can affect pregnancy.

To mitigate the spread of the virus at Fortis IVF Bloom Center complete care is being taken to lessen the number of the physical visit of patients to the hospital. Hospital offers telemedicine appointments for the initial or follow-up consultations to curate a treatment plan for you. Further, to avoid transmission risk, it follows all guidelines suggested by the authorities.

Dr. Pooja explained that the central laboratory also has a HEPA filtration system, a positive pressure air handling system, and maintains quality assurance and rigorous cleaning at all times. This lowers the risk of COVID transmission to embryos, eggs, or sperm.

Changes have been made at Fortis IVF centers in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai (Girgaum & Bandra), Navi Mumbai, South Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad & Mohali for patient safety. Video Consultation in form of digital consultation and counseling has been introduced to minimize patients’ visits and clinic footfall.

To reduce exposure, the center provides home blood collection. In males with suspected semen problems, semen collection can also be done at home & then transported to the laboratory for analysis. For repeated ultrasounds, we have started referring patients to their nearby ultrasonologist rather than calling them to the IVF clinic.  Options for home delivery of medications along with a prescription are also available.

Also, the centers’ staff is on the daily triage questionnaire for COVID-19, which are questions that determine infection risk. They are also tested with an RT PCR test if they are suspected of COVID infection. At centers, the staff greets with hands folded and no handshakes. Visitors are requested to sanitize their hands and temperature is checked.

Face masks and PPE are worn during the procedures as per guidelines along with mandatory for patients to adorn masks all the time.  Ultraviolet lights (which are used during non-working hours) have been installed and sterilization to sanitize the surfaces and air is done regularly.

Most importantly, COVID Screening of all couples is done using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) before starting the treatment and repeat them before all treatment stages, such as embryo transfer or ovum pick up. If either spouse is detected positive for Covid, the cycle is canceled. In those patients wherein a cycle is canceled, discounts are given in the next IVF attempt, to compensate for the financial loss of cycle cancellation.

Take these precautions while undergoing IVF to stay steer clear of coronavirus

ü  Wear a mask all the time when in public.

ü  Frequently wash your hands with water and soap for at least 20/30 seconds.

ü  If soap is not available, use an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol.

ü  Disinfect and clean frequently touched surfaces using cleaning wipes or sprays.

ü Cover your nose and hands with elbow or tissue and not your hands
