Mayor launches “Back to Roots” campaign on World Environment Day

Chandigarh, June 5:- Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Chandigarh today launched ‘Back to Roots’ campaign in a bid to contribute towards improving the environment by involving citizens to join together and make some efforts for tree plantation during “Environment Week” started from 5th June to 11th June, 2022.

The Mayor launched the campaign during a tree plantation programme during which she planted saplings of Camphor tree in the green belt, Bapu Dham, Sector 26, Chandigarh. Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Dalip Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor & area councilor, Sh. Anup Gupta, Deputy Mayor, Sh. Manoj Kumar, MC Councillor, senior citizens, local residents and children also planted saplings of various ornamental and medicinal plants in the green belt.

While speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh is going to organize “Environment Week” from 5th June to 11th June on different themes each day including “Back to Roots”, which has been started today from tree plantation at a green belt in sector 26. She said that approximately 48000 medicinal and ornamental plants/shrubs based on specific themes will be planted over a period of 3 months having varieties with life span of more than 100 years.

She said that theme based plantation will be done under the ‘Back to Roots’ campaign in different parks including medicinal plants in big parks and green belts and ornamental plants, trees and shrubs will be planted in neighbourhood parks.

The Mayor said that significance of different trees including their life span and usages will also be publicized among citizens to get benefits from the plants and their involvement towards adopting trees for their safety and upkeep in their surrounding neighbourhood parks.

Citing some examples, the Mayor said that trees like Neem (Azadirachta indica) having maximum life span of more than 200 to 250 years has anti-inflammatory property which helps reduces acne and is a rich source of vitamin E which help repair damaged skin cells etc. similarly, Amla having life span of more than 100 years has antibacterial & astringent properties which help improve the body’s immunity system and is used in a lot of shampoos and conditioners. It also contains high levels of vitamin C which helps reduce hair fall and also strengthens the roots & maintains hair color.

The Mayor said that Camphor, Sita Ashok, Moulsari and other similar medicinal plants having life span of more than 75 years will be planted in the parks by involving citizens of city beautiful so that the City, known as green city will strengthen its roots to save environment.

In addition to that a plogging drive at N-choe & New Lake, Sector 42, Chandigarh was organized by the MCC in collaboration with Yuvsatta NGO, St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School, Earth Day Network-India and Riders of Royal Enfield motorcycles during which over 300 Kg of plastic bottles, glass, wrappers and other waste collected during two hour endeavor.

Cycling enthusiasts from all walks of life, from all age categories, celebrate the World Bicycle Day in Chandigarh

The cycling enthusiasts from all walks of life, from all age categories, celebrated the World Bicycle Day in Chandigarh by taking part in the cyclothon, kicked off from the Panjab University campus, on Friday.

Over 1000 cyclists, including cycle rallies from different PU hostels and NSS volunteers, were part of the Bicycle carnival to spread the message of ‘Cycle for Your Happy, Hearty and Healthy Life’. 

The cycling route of 11 km was started from the Panjab University Rose Garden near the Administrative office, Sector 14, Chandigarh, to Sukhna Lake and back. 

The Chandigarh chapter of BYCS – a global social enterprise guided by the belief that bicycles transform cities and cities transform the world – and Chandigarh Cycling group in association with the State Bank of India, supported by Panjab University, organised the cycling event. 

The Cyclothon was flagged off by Chander Shekhar Sharma, Chief General Manager, State Bank of India, in presence of PU Registrar Professor YP Verma, Professor Kashmir Singh, Secretary to Vice-Chancellor, Professor Prashant Gautam, Director Sports, PU, and Dr Rakesh Mohindra, Bicycle Mayor of Chandigarh Chapter of BYCS. 

Apart from the residents of Chandigarh and surrounding areas, the cyclists from Punjab Panthers group, Patiala, and Maharaja Agrasen University, Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, especially came all the way to Chandigarh to be part of the World Bicycle Day celebrations.

The youngest rider, five-year-old Aganzul Preet Singh was honoured with a special appreciation prize. 

“Our motto for this year’s World Bicycle Day celebrations is ‘Cycle for Your Happy, Hearty and Healthy Life’ and I am happy that we are able to spread the message through the cyclothon,” says Dr. Mohindra, who is an avid cycle promoter and is working on the social issues that can be addressed through cycling. “World Bicycle Day draws attention to the benefits of using the bicycle – a simple, affordable, clean, and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation. We also try to make the Cyclothon a zero waste event.”

The event is held under ‘India Cycles4Change Challenge. The registration for the cyclothon was free of cost and the participants were given T-shirts, appreciation certificates and refreshments.

Chandigarh, June 3:- Chandigarh, a city which has the distinction of having 200 Kms. Of dedicated cycle tracks and the largest Public Bike sharing system in the country, with 2500 cycles on road and 2500 more cycles in the pipeline, celebrated the World Bicycle Day with a difference.

A cycle rally organized to mark the world bicycle day, the Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. has dedicated it to the real champions of cycling including sanitation workers, public health workers, gardeners, road and construction workers, who commute to work on their bicycles, carrying their tiffin boxes, work all day long and go back to their homes on their bicycles. To ensure their road safety, reflective stickers were pasted on the bicycles to make them visible at night.

The rally was flagged of at 6.30 am by Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, city Mayor alongwith Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. amid cycle lovers of city and prominent persons of the city. The rallies started from Jan Marg from Rose Garden side and passed towards Rock Garden & Sukhna Lake and culminate at the start point after completing 8.4 Kms route.

More than 1000 participants, including the councilors, employees of Municipal Corporation, professional cyclists, students, local residents etc. participated enthusiastically in this cycle rally, organized by CSCL in collaboration with Kotak Mahindra Bank. 500 smart bikes were also arranged for the cycle lovers to take free rides today.

While addressing the cycle lovers, the Mayor said that the people who daily cycle to work are the real promoters of cycling in any city and the authorities should come forward to encourage and motivate such people by providing necessary support to them and by creating platforms to the cyclists in their workplaces. She said that this time the CSCL has taken unique initiative to mark the world bicycle day by involving the regular cyclists, who peddle cycle to work daily to boost their moral and contribution towards environment.

The Mayor said that the officials and staff of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh who can use a bicycle regularly to come to the office should use it on a regular basis. Also all the employees will be encouraged to cycle to the office once a month.

She said that it is very important to make people aware about the importance of using bicycles for transportation. There is a need to create environmental awareness by avoiding pollution caused by vehicles. All ages of people will be motivated to use the cycle for daily commute.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. congratulated all the cycle lovers of city on World Bicycle Day and emphasized that cycling is the most convenient way to commute to work as it avoid traffic woes and made the cyclist feel happy. She said that if not possible for day long ride, one should start with smaller distances, may be a ride to the grocery store or in a local park.

The event was a ‘Zero Waste’ event and water dispensers were provided at the venue and throughout the route. The rally also contributed towards ensuring Chandigarh’s strong participation in the ‘One-day Cycling Challenge for cities and city leaders’- an inter-city competition being organized by the Smart Cities Mission.

Sh. Dalip Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Anup Gupta, Deputy Mayor, Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh Sidhu and Sh. Sorabh Joshi, councilors, Sh. D.V.  Commissioner visits Sector 45 & 46 to take stock of ongoing development works; listens to the problems of area residents

Chandigarh, June 1:- Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today visited Sector 45 & 46 to take stock of ongoing development works alongwith to listen the issues of area residents.

The ‘on foot’ visit of Commissioner was started at 6.30 am in the morning alongwith all the team of concerned engineers accompanied by Sh. Gurpreet Singh, area councilor, Ward No. 34, Joint Commissioner, chief engineer, all Superintending Engineers and concerned Executive Engineers, SDEs, Junior Engineers of MCC, office bearers of Resident Welfare Associations and local residents.

During the visit the Commissioner directed the SE B&R for restoration and carpeting of V-6 road left after road cut in sector 45 C&D besides removal of temporary structure constructed using sheets on road berm at sector 45.

The Commissioner further directed SE B&R for installation of No Parking sign boards and construction of raised road berm using paver blocks near sampark building, installation of bullard to restrict entries of vehicles near sampark, construction of table top on junction of V-5 road and V-6 road, tile/paver repair around parks on V-5 road, breathing space to be provided around trees opposite H.No. 327-A, repair of paver blocks in sector 45-D and planning for construction of slip road from sector 45 towards V-3 road sector 33/45.

Taking serious note of overflow of sewer on road from personal chamber, the Commissioner directed the concerned engineers to serve notice to H.No. 3299 alongwith disconnection of water supply connection. The Commissioner directed the concerned officers to prepare proposal for the General House regarding cleaning of private sewer chamber using MCC machines and fix charges for the same. She directed the engineers for construction of road gullies on T-junction near House No. 3359, sector 45-D and raising the level of chamber in sector 45 alongwith carpeting.

On the issue of pruning of trees, the Commissioner directed the SE Horticulture for pruning of trees near block, H.No. 2056 sector 45-C so that solar panels can function properly. The other issues were including repair of street light near block, H.No. 2056, Sector 45-C; jurisdiction of vacant land fenced by railings, near sampark building, sector 45 where vehicles being parked illegally to be checked. She asked the concerned engineers if the land pertains to MCC then its development may be put up and if the land pertains to Administration then letter to be written to the concerned authorities for its proper development.

The Commissioner asked the engineers to check the jurisdiction of park on back side of Muslim graveyard, sector 45-C if it belongs to MCC then its proper development may be put up. The other issues were including toe wall/railings/gate/benches/swing repair in various parks of sector 45 & 46; installation of toe wall with railing in the park, sector 45-C on back side of house No. 2211 (adjoining electricity building) sector 45-C; proposal may be sent to the general house for fixing dustbins in all parks; installation of high mast light in park, near house no. 3406/1, sector 45-D and tertiary water pressure to be maintained in park, infront of house no. 3349, sector 45-D, Chandigarh.

On the issue of proper sanitation, the Commissioner directed the Medical Officer of Health that challan to be issued against the violators for dumping garbage on road berm adjoining boundary wall of park (infront of chitara medicos) in sector 45 by locals and garbage collectors be asked to ensure collection of garbage from the hotels/dhabas.

She further directed the MOH for arrangements to transfer garbage directly to MRF; proper cleaning of SSK; challan for illegal throwing of garbage in this SSK and proposal for sending garbage collection vehicles to burial to be finalized at the earliest.

On the issue of encroachment, the Commissioner directed the concerned officers that no commercial vehicle to be allowed to park on road berm near sampark building sector 45-C. In case of violation enforcement wing shall take necessary action and issue challans.

She asked the enforcement incharge that fruit vendors shall not be allowed to sit on road berm (sector 45 side) of road dividing sector 45 and burial near V-3 road junction. The Commissioner directed to check meat/fish market near Govt. school, sector 45-D and if the market being run unauthorized then it shall be removed immediately and challans be issued against the violators which causing blockage of sewer.

Workshop on Spade Art Organized For Visually Impaired Residents by GH-2

A workshop on spade art was organized for visually impaired students  by Laxmibai Hall (GH-2) , Panjab University in collaboration with social substance club on 31.05.2022. The resource person for the event was Ms.Puneet Madan who is a world renowned artist, a record holder, recipient of many awards and recently awarded “The Michel Angelo Award-2022” for outstanding art work. The workshop began with an introduction about using of spade and the type of colours that can be used in this art form. The students were also given information about various types of strokes and the effects that can be created. The special emphasis of this workshop was to engage visually impaired residents and involve other residents with them. The residents of Laxmibai hall actively participated in this workshop and worked along with the visually impaired students in learning this art.

PANJAB UNIVERSITY CONVENED AN ANTI TOBACCO CAMPAIGN

National Service Scheme, Panjab University, Chandigarh conducted an Awareness Rally on Anti-Tobacco Day on 31st May, 2022. More than 100 Volunteers from various departments actively participated in the rally, and raised slogans to make people aware about ill effects of using tobacco. The rally started from 11:00 A.M. from Gandhi Bhawan and was concluded at Law Auditorium after passing through Boys Hostel 2&3. Dr. Naveen Kumar, Dr. Amita Verma, Dr. Anuj Kumar, and Dr. Simran Preet, programme officers flagged off the rally. Inauguration of STUTI Training Program

The 7 days hands-on-Training Program on R & D equipment “Material Processing & Advanced Functional Material Characterization Techniques” is commenced from 30th May-05th June 2022 at the Department of Physics and Central Research Facility Centre (CRFC), NIT Srinagar under Synergistic Training program Utilizing the Scientific and Technological Infrastructure’ (STUTI) program in association with Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Laboratory (SAIF), Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The Scheme STUTI is supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India is intended to build human resources and its knowledge capacity through open access to S&T Infrastructure. It envisions hands-on training and sensitization of the state-of-art instruments in various institutes/departments having availed projects under FIST/PURSE/CURIE/SAIF/ SATHI schemes.

            The training program was commenced and inaugurated by Worthy Chief Guest Prof. Rakesh Sehgal, honorable director, NIT Srinagar and Guest of Honor Prof. M.F. Wani, Dean R&C, Prof. S. K. Bukhari, Honorable Registrar, NIT Srinagar, and Prof. R. G. Sonkwade, Director SAIF, Shivaji University, Kolhapur.

            Dr. M. A. Shah, Head of the Department of Physics gave cordial welcome to the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour and all the participants of the program. Dr. Vijay Kumar, coordinator, training program highlighted the key points of the STUTI training program, its schedule and emphasized on the importance of the training program. He mentioned that total 30 participants from 11 different institutes/universities have participated in this training program representing 8 States/UTs.

            Prof. Ganga Ram Chaudhary, Coordinator of the STUTI Program-PMU & Director, SAIF, PU, Chandigarh emphasized the goals and visions of the STUTI scheme to the participants. The training manual of the STUTI program was released by the honorable Chief Guest and other dignitaries in the presence of all the participants. Prof. Yogendra Kumar Mishra from University of Southern Denmark was also present on dais to grace this occasion. He addressed the participants and highlighted the importance of Hands-on-training in enhancing the technical skills.

            Prof. Rakesh Sehgal welcomed the participants and highly appreciated the efforts of the organizing committee members of the training program for the commencement of such a wonderful event. Prof. Seemin Rubab presented the vote of thanks to the dignitaries and wished good luck to all the participants for the training program.

The event was also graced by the presence of Dr. Rajeev Kumar, assistant professor at Department of Environment studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Dr. Sandeep Kumar, Associate professor, Department of Bio and Nano Technology, Guru Jambheshwar University (GJUS&T), Hisar.

            Many eminent resource persons are invited for delivering lectures during the 7 days training program to impart participants with the basic knowledge and skills. Participants will be imparted hands-on-training on several instruments such as XRD, FE-SEM, Nano Mechanical system, Multi target sputtering system, WDXRF, UV-visible, TGA, Rheometer, Particle size analyzer and Axis laser Texturing.

            The inaugural session was followed by the technical session where Prof. Y. K. Mishra delivered a talk on “Tetrapods based Smart Materials for Advanced Technologies”. Prof. Mishra has explained the development of zinc oxide tetrapod using flame transport synthesis and their application in building porous three-dimensional networks as suitable candidates as the sacrificial backbone for creating hollow tetrapodal nanostructures and 3D architectures.

The training session was conducted in CRFC where participants were divided in four group and provided hands on training on FE-SEM, XRD, Nano Mechanical system, Multi target sputtering system.

A special lecture on ‘Awareness about Breast Cancer’, in collaboration with Centre for Public Health, P.U., Chd. was organized for the residents of GH-6 today in the premises of Girls Hostel No. 6, Mother Teresa Hall, P.U., Chd.,  under the guidance of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, P.U., Chd. and supervision of Prof. Jagtar Singh, DSW, Prof. Meena Sharma, DSW(W) and Prof. Ashok Kumar, Associate DSW, P.U., Chd. 

Dr. Manoj Kumar, Asstt. Prof., Centre for Public Health, P.U., Chd. was the Chief Guest on this occasion.

Dr. Manisha Sharma, Warden, Women Hostel No. 6 welcomed and introduced Dr. Manoj Kumar to the audience.

Under the able guidance of Dr. Savita Prashar, Co-ordinator, Centre for Public Health, P.U., Chandigarh, Mrs. Harpeet Kaur Dhaliwal and Ms. Harneev Kaur Saini, students of Centre for Public Health, P.U. Chandigarh has explained about the Breast Cancer. They said about the types of Breast cancer, risk factors and sign & symptoms of breast cancer. They also told how to detect breast cancer by self examination i.e. BSE(Breast Self Examination), clinical breast examination. They explained about the treatments of breast cancer such as surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiation therapy and targeted therapy. They also told how could we reduce the risk of breast cancer i.e. by eating healthy, being active and by avoiding smoking and consuming alcohol.

At last, Dr. Manisha Sharma paid a vote of thanks to the speakers and the Chief Guest on this occasion.

A health check-up camp was also organized after the lecture for the staff, residents and mess/ canteen workers of the hostel.
