Chandigarh, June 10:- Plogging is trending in the city beautiful with Municipal Corporation Chandigarh’s new push ‘Clean as you jog’, gradually trying to embrace this new fitness trend, in which joggers pick up garbage as they run, to save the environment.

Commemorating Environment week from 5th-11th June, on Friday, Mrs. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Chandigarh kick-started the initiative of plogging at Manimajra area during which group of local residents, MCC officers and officials and around 20-25 fitness enthusiasts and morning walkers, carrying jute bags and wearing gloves in their hands, jogged and picked up the trash all along their jogging tracks inside the garden and road berms.

Speaking on the new initiative, the Mayor said that plogging is a new concept that is trending in the city and is an environment friendly exercise mashup that combines jogging with the environmental benefits of picking up trash. While jogging helps the people to stay fit, collecting the trash from the gardens and road sides helps to keep the environment fit and fine, she added.

She said that this activity helps people burn some extra calories as they are constantly bending to collect the trash all along the route. It also helps to break the monotony of jogging. Unaware of the new initiative and oblivious to what was going on around, some of the morning walkers at Mamimajra area were taken by surprise when they spotted the joggers stopping along the tracks just to pick up trash and store it in a waste bag, said the Mayor.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh started plogging at New lake area, sector 42, where Sh. Jasbir Singh, area councilor and other members of resident welfare association and locals alongwith volunteers of NGO joined for plogging.

The Commissioner said that the aim was not to collect huge quantities of trash or cleaning the entire gardens or road sides and make it free of garbage; it was just a new form of exercise coupled with a simple effort to save the environment. She said that such activities would be carried out every weekend to start with. Later, it will be expanded to all parks and throughout the week when citizens from all parts of city join in.

She said that plogging is a very healthy exercise as it involves variation in body movement like bending, stretching and squatting alongside of course running. Plus, beautifying the city as go by, its dual benefits are worth vouching for, added the Commissioner.

The Commissioner appealed to the citizens of Chandigarh stop throwing garbage on the road sides and littering in the gardens rather always carry a small bag in your car of moving through gardens to collect waste and drop it in the dustbins installed by the MCC in the parks and other areas of city.

During the activity the team collected all sorts of trash and garbage including gutka packets, chips packets, water bottles, cigarette butts, discarded bottles and ice-cream sticks etc.

In other parts of city too, the area councilors and local residents participated in the plogging activities where they picked up discarded plastic bottles and empty polythene packets to drop them in the dustbins. Seeing this new initiative, the local residents lauded this activity and joined the group of councilors and joggers in their respective areas.

 4th Sat Paul Mittal Memorial Lecture on “Future Trends in Telecommunication”

The 4th Sat Paul Mittal Memorial Lecture on “Future Trends in Telecommunication” was held in hybrid mode under the Bharti Chair in Telecom & IT Research on June 09, 2022, at 11:30 AM in UIET, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Mr Avinash Agarwal, Deputy Director General (Convergence & Broadcasting), Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), DoT, Government of India delivered the talk starting with an introduction and the mission of the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC).

The speaker described the evolution of telephony as how the 5G network evolved from existing fixed-line telephones. He also stated the impact of telecom evolution on lifestyle, Jobs and home services. The transformations in broadcasting were discussed along with its key technological developments. He traced the evolution of 5G starting from 1G analog, 2G digital, 3G mobile data, and 4G mobile broadband. Several 5G use-case scenarios were discussed including the areas of enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine-type communications (mMTC), and ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC). Also, he deliberated upon the deployment strategies of 5G worldwide including various challenges in the Internet of Things (IoT), technical challenges include connectivity, reliability, cost, policy challenges including IPR, governance and some common challenges like standards, interoperability, security and privacy. He also talked about the status of 5G roll-out in India and the rise of the 6G network along with its key characteristics.

The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in the telecommunication industry was reviewed, specifically concerning the 5G network. The presentation delivered by him also touched upon the concepts of the technologies that made IoT possible. The industrial internet of things (IIoT) is the use of smart sensors and actuators to enhance manufacturing and industrial processes. He also discussed IoT and M2M technology with the difference between these technologies. Also, he stated the need for Green Telecommunication and why it should not be ignored. He also discussed IPv6 and its advantages over IPv4 and the reason behind TEC promoting IPv6 based telecommunication devices. Towards the end of his talk, Mr Agarwal discussed several ITU-T Study & National Working Groups. He stated that students can contribute to these groups mentioning the benefits of contributing as well.

Dr Veenu Mangat welcomed all the guests and introduced Sh. Sat Paul Mittal who was elected twice to Rajya Sabha for a term of six years each in 1976 and 1982. United Nations decorated him with the prestigious United Nations Peace Medal in 1987. Dr Neelam Goel introduced the rich legacy of Panjab University and shared the genesis of the setting up of the Bharti Chair in Telecommunication and IT at UIET. She detailed the scope of activities of the Bharti Chair from teaching to innovation and industry interaction. The profiles of Bharti Chair, Prof. Pamela Kumar and Dr D. N. Singh were introduced. The activities conducted under the Bharti Chair in the last couple of years were shared during the event. Professor Pamela Kumar, Visiting Professor Bharti Chair, introduced the distinguished speaker and set the context for the lecture and the vision for future activities. Prof. Krishan Kumar proposed a vote of thanks for the guests, organizers and all attendees.

Bharti Chair in Telecommunication and Information Technology was established in UIET, Panjab University in 2002 by Bharti Telecom Group in the memory of Late Sh. Sat Paul Mittal who was a visionary leader. For this purpose, the endowment was given by Sh. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Enterprises for enhancement of knowledge in the field of telecommunication.

The event was held under the mentorship of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University (Chief Patron), Prof. Renu Vig, DUI, Panjab University (Patron), Prof. J.K. Goswamy, Director, UIET, Panjab University (Co-Patron). Prof. Roopali Garg, Dean Student Welfare (Women), Panjab University was the Convenor of the event and Dr. Neelam Goel, Assistant Professor, UIET, Panjab University was the Co-convenor of the event.

More than 220 faculty members/ research scholars/ students along with external stakeholders participated in hybrid mode. The lecture was highly informative and interactive.

Chandigarh, June 9:- Aimed at promoting the usage of cloth bags instead of single-use plastic bags, Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Chandigarh today launched a mobile “Cloth Bag selling unit” at grain market, Sector 26, Chandigarh in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner and Sh. Dalip Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor. This initiative has been started under the Environment Week is being celebrated by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh from 5th to 11th June, 2022.

Ensuring the principles of 3 R (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle), a Self Help Group ‘Rani Laxmi Bai’, has started this unit under social mobilization and institutional development (SM&ID) component of DAY-NULM for manufacturing and mass production of cloth bags with an aim to replace polythene single use bags. The SHG is working under United Nations Sustainable Development Goals at Ram Darbar by involving 25-30 women under the aegis of Area Level Federation, Ram Darbar, Chandigarh.

The women involved in the Rani Laxmi Bai Self Help Group are the housewives of persons engaged in informal sector, who have the knowledge of basic stitching and tailoring has come forward to initiate a start-up of manufacturing of cloth bags from used and discarded cloths at Ram Darbar, Chandigarh. DAY-NULM has given hand on experience to the Self Help Groups of women through skill training partners in designing low cost bag manufacturing with respect to utility by general public.

While speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that it is essential for citizens to move away from disposable plastic bags and adopt cloth bags in order to protect the environment and keep the city safe for future generations. She said that grown-ups should set an example by taking this up seriously. She said that these cloth bag selling units are expected to be launched in other areas also including city markets apni mandis and booth markets soon.

She said that this initiative is aimed at encouraging the people to return to the use of this eco-friendly cloth bag and discard the plastic bags. She said that these bags are environment friendly and ideal while plastics are harmful to the environment and also to the health of human being and animals.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC said that the civic body has roped in various SHGs to hand out cloth bags to the residents at market places at low cost. Meanwhile, flying squads of enforcement wing and sanitary wing of MCC have been deployed across the city to crack the whip on the violators of banned plastic bags.

She further said that the flying squads have been directed to conduct raids at various places after appealing to the people to provide inputs about shops using illegal plastic bags. She said that the MCC has taken a decision to promote the use of cloth bags for shopping, and to stop the usage of plastic bags in order to make the city 100% plastic free.

The Commissioner said that the environmental problem is the greatest obstacle faced by mankind and a cloth bag is the perfect alternative to replace plastic bags for a clean environment. She called upon the citizen of city beautiful to reduce the use of plastics and to try and replace plastic with cloth.

Earlier, volunteers of NGOs roped in the campaign carried out rally and ‘nukkar natakas’ throughout the vegetable market to create awareness among shopkeepers and customers promoting the usage of cloth bags instead of single use plastic bags for carrying items of their daily need.

In addition to that a joint sanitation raid and awareness campaign has been conducted in village Mauli Jagran in the evening and 9 violators have been issued challans.

Seminar “Defence & Warfare: Emerging Paradigms” organized at Panjab University

Department of Defence and National Security Studies (DDNSS), Panjab University and Panjab University Institute of Social Sciences Education and Research (PU-ISSER) in collaboration with Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) organised a Seminar on June 8, 2022. The Seminar on the theme “Defence & Warfare: Emerging Paradigms” was held at ICSSR Complex, Panjab University, Sector 14, Chandigarh.

The Key Speakers of the Seminar were Col. Nitn Chandra (retd.) and Maj. Gen. Amarjit Singh (retd.). Col. Nitin Chandra spoke on Space based Imagery Intelligence (IMINT) signatures of Military Targets. Maj. Gen. Amarjit spoke about the sixth generation of Warfare, the current way of conducting warfare as we see around us today. 

Dr. Jaskaran Waraich, Chairperson of Department of Defence and National Security Studies, Panjab University welcomed the delegation and introduced the theme. Prof. Sanjay Kaushik, Director of Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) delivered the opening remarks. He highlighted the relevance of the topics to be discussed and spoke about how the defence and security paradigms are changing across the world. 

Col. Chandra explained how satellite imagery is used to identify enemy military targets. He also explained how some of this imagery may be misinterpreted and discussed the best practices on how to analyse satellite imagery using open source systems

Gen. Amarjit explained how warfare, now, is not limited to Kinetic means anymore but is increasingly involving NBIC(Nano, Bio, Info, Cognitive) Sciences. Everyone, be it a soldier or an ordinary citizen, is the target of the 6th generation warfare and the war is fought by altering the way of thinking of people by using psychological tools and weaponization of brain sciences. According to him, the military power construct of the world is changing from economic to Data (Information) and Hyper Connectivity. 

The Seminar concluded with vote of thanks by Prof. Simrit Kahlon. who thanked the key speakers for their invaluable inputs and highlighted the importance of the topics discussed at the Seminar.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up Dr. Ambedkar Centre and Chair at the University with Dr. Ambedkar Foundation (DAF), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, the University has set up the Dr. Ambedkar Centre of Excellence (DACE) to impart free coaching to aspiring SC Students for Civil Services and other competitive examinations as per the recommendations of the DAF. As per the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment this specialized coaching will be provided only to the Scheduled Caste students for the Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC.

The objective of the Scheme is to provide high quality free coaching facilities to the Scheduled Caste students for the Civil Services examinations conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and other competitive examinations. It will empower SC candidates through good quality coaching and fulfil the goal of enhancing their competitive skills. Dr. Ambedkar Centre of Excellence (DACE) will play a significant role in the holistic development of SC students.

Selection Criteria:

– The Scheme shall be open to only Scheduled Caste candidates.

– Minimum eligibility will be Graduation in any subject. Those who are appearing in the Graduation final year exams are expected to submit a pass certificate at the time of commencement of the Coaching Program.

– All candidates must provide their duly attested caste certificates issued by competent authority.

– The selected candidates can avail the coaching facility only once, irrespective of the chances available to him or her.

– The candidates should not have received similar benefits from the government under any other scheme. An affidavit to this effect should be furnished by the candidate.

– Maximum of 100 candidates shall be selected.

– Out of the 100 seats, 33 per cent shall be reserved for women candidates.

– Attendance Register of student enrolment and attendance shall be maintained.

– Accountability of the candidate leaving the said Course in between will be properly fixed and entire fees will be recovered from the candidate.

Admission will be done through the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the University. Prospective candidates can apply Online through www.ignou.ac.in  at  https://dace.ignouonline.ac.in/. The Entrance exam will have 100 objective type questions to test the candidates’ general knowledge, language skills, reasoning abilities and general aptitude.

Dr. Shiv Kumar, Chairperson of the department initiated the webinar welcoming resource person and participants. Prof. Preeti Mahajan, Coordinator of today’s webinar introduced the Resource Person and theme of the webinar. Prof. Nirmal Kumar Swain, Resource Person, from Department of Library and Information Science, Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Haryana delivered the talk on “Research and the world of citations”. Prof. Swain highlighted the significance of citations in academic writing.

He said that every source used in academic writing must be cited in order to uphold intellectual honesty (or avoiding plagiarism), to acknowledge or give credit to other people’s work, to allow the reader to determine independently whether the referenced material supports the author’s argument in the claimed way, and to help the reader gauge the strength and validity of the material the author has used. He deliberated on the circumstances during the writing process on what to cite, when to cite and when not to cite. He suggested that less number of cited documents should be used except the matter, which genuinely supports or corroborate our research.Today’s webinar was attended by 85 participants from all over the country.  Mayor gives appointment letters to new recruits

Chandigarh, June 6:- Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Chandigarh and Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today called upon the newly recruited officers/officials of MCC to come forward and live up to the responsibilities.

While congratulating them, the Mayor said that it is essential to maintain people’s confidence and faith in public service delivery system and it can be achieved through determination, dedication and devotion. She asked them to provide responsive administration at the base level stating that Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has always accorded high priority to public service delivery.

As many as 42 candidates, who cleared the examination, were handed out appointment letters by the Mayor and Commissioner during a special orientation programme held at Conference Room, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.

 Mayor launches “Swachh Rakkho, Swasth Raho” campaign to clean city toilets

Encourages citizens to join hands in maintaining public toilets

Chandigarh, June 5:- Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Chandigarh today launched “Swachh Rakkho, Swasth Raho” campaign in a bid to clean 305 public toilets as well as community toilets by involving all councilors and citizens to join together and make their best possible efforts maintaining public toilets and community toilets during “Environment Week” started from 5th June to 11th June, 2022.

The Mayor launched the campaign of cleaning public toilets under the theme “Swachh Rakkho, Swasth Raho” at Shanti Nagar, Mainiajra which was followed throughout city by organizing different events to clean nearly 225 public toilets as well as community toilets in city markets and colonies under the supervision of area councilors in their respective wards.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner alongwith Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh Siddhu, area councilor participated in the cleaning campaign at public toilet, sector 7, Chandigarh during which the Commissioner and area councilor greeted the female toilet attendant with flower bud and handed over her a pair of gloves, apron and other safety equipments for cleaning in toilet. They expressed happiness over the cleanliness inside the toilet blocks and thanked the female attendant for maintaining the cleaning over there.

Similarly, all the councilors of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh participated in the cleaning of public toilet activities in their respective wards. All the councilors praised the efforts of toilet attendants for maintaining cleanliness in the toilets and thanked them with giving flower buds besides handing them over safety equipments for cleaning the toilets and aprons.

While speaking on the occassion,  the Mayor said that the second day of the environment week was celebrated under the theme “Swachh Rakkho, Swasth Raho”, during which all the public and community toilets throughout the city including toilets in city markets, green belts, colonies, schools and institutions have been cleaned.

In addition to that toilet blocks in all the school premises, hospitals, dispensaries, Bus stands have also been cleaned under the theme “Swachh Rakkho, Swasth Raho”.
