Chandigarh, October 3:- Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Chandigarh today dedicated second rejuvenated ‘Amrit Sarovar’ of Chandigarh at Sarangpur village as part of the ‘Amrit Sarovar Mission’ aimed at the conservation of water.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Dalip Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Anup Gupta, Deputy Mayor, Sh. Ram Chander Yadav, area councillor and prominent persons of local area were present during the occasion.

While speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that Hon’ble Prime Minister of India had launched the Mission aimed at developing and rejuvenating 75 water bodies in each district of the country as a part of celebration of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’  and the target to complete the work has been fixed as 15th August, 2023.

She further said that the Municipal Corporation under this mission planned to rejuvenate 3 abandoned Water Bodies at Village Kaimbwala, Sarangpur and Khuda Alisher. The water body at village Kaimbwala had already rejuvenated and dedicated to public on 15th August 2022 and the work on rejuvenation of third water body at village Khuda Alisher is in progress and shall be completed by the end of this month.

The Mayor said that the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has further planned to rejuvenate 4th Water Body at  Dadumajra Village and the work will be completed before 15th August 2023. The Municipal Corporation will also hoist the flag next year on the water body at Sarovar in Dadumajra Village on 15th August 2023.

She said that this water body is spread on area about 0.75 Acre and have capacity of holding water of 6000Cum. This water body was completely abandoned and lot of vegetation/jungle was grown up when it was transferred to Municipal Corporation Chandigarh in 2019.  The MCC has spent around Rs.30 Lakh rejuvenate this water body. The walls of water body, Lights, Hut for residents, Benches, Path way around the water body has been provided for the public. This water body will also raise the depleted ground water level and avoid flooding in village in addition to conserve the water. This will act as a mini Lake for the residents of the village. It is the duty of villagers now to keep it neat and clean.

CRIKC-Igniting Young Minds, an initiative for nurturing Scientific Temper through social outreach for school students, and Institution’s Innovation Council, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organised a talk on the theme ‘My Story: a motivational session by a successful Start-up founder’ at Govt. Model High School, Sector 22C, Chandigarh.

The speakers of the day were Er. Sahil and Er. Gokul Chawla, Directors, Deframers Solar Pvt. Ltd., Mohali,and Alumni of UIET, Panjab University, who shared their inspiring journey from being students to enterprising professionals. They highlighted the need to think out of the box, stay focused, never give up, start small and seek mentorship. The school students showed keen interest and interacted profusely with the young entrepreneurs by sharing their own creative ideas.

Dr Jaspreet Kaur, Incharge-CRIKC Igniting Young Minds, Department of Botany, Dr Gaurav Sapra, UIET, and Dr Rajesh Kumar, UIET, Panjab University, motivated the students to get inspired from the success story of these young start-up founders and encouraged the school students to observe the surroundings keenly, look for problems and try to find simple solutions.

Mr Subhash Chand Aggarwal, President, Bhartiya Vikas Parishad, Chandigarh graced the occasion. Mrs Anuradha Gupta, Headmistress, GMHS, Sec-22C, proposed a vote of thanks.

Chandigarh, October 2:- Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, Governor Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh congratulated the Mayor, Commissioner, councilors, team of officers and citizens of city beautiful for securing 12th position in the Swachh Survekshan survey conducted by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, in which 4354 cities of India participated. 

After returning from New Delhi with the award, the team of Municipal Corporation  of Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Dalip Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor and Sh. Anup Gupta, Deputy Mayor called on the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, to seek his blessings, this evening.

The Governor said that achieving 12th place in the best performing cities in cleanliness and also being adjudged the fastest moving state/capital city was not only a huge achievement for Chandigarh but also a matter of immense pride . 

He praised Chandigarh for improving its waste collection and disposal mechanism, and hailed citizens, elected representatives and officials for the stellar performance. He said that the Safai Mitras are the true recipients  of this award. They toil day in and day out to keep the city clean. He said Chandigarh has emerged as the fastest moving capital and will gain its glory by securing top rankings in the ensuing survekshan survey with the active support and efforts of its citizens.

The Survekshan has evolved from being an assessment of 73 cities in 2016 to covering 4,354 cities this year, including 91 Ganga towns and 62 cantonment zones). The assessment was conducted in three phases in July-August, September-October and November 2021 to January 2022.

Mayor handed over ‘Pink MRF’ at sector 25 to women team

Chandigarh, October 2:- To commemorate Gandhi Jayanti, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh dedicated an MRF completely to women.

Smt. Sarbjit Kaur Dhillon, Mayor, Chandigarh handed over operations of the MRF of Sector 25 to the ‘women team’ and named the centre as “Pink MRF”. It is the first of its kind in the country where only women workers will operate. It is also the first unit of MCC to have only female workers. The pink workforce  includes 20 helpers, DEOs and Security Guards. The helpers were drawn from those who were earlier working as rag pickers. They will now perform the duty of segregating dry waste on conveyer belt.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Anup Gupta, Deputy Mayor, Smt. Poonam and Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, councillors and other concerned officers were also present on the occasion.

While speaking on the occasion the Mayor said that the local ragpickers have been identified and training has been imparted to them for operating conveyer belt, washer of vehicles etc. She said that the whole centre will be operated by the women team and support staff i.e. data entry operators besides security of the MRF centre in day will also be looked after by the women employees.

She said that three data entry operators will maintain daily data of MRF centre. She said that the project is one of the components of the Solid Waste Management system as per SWM rules 2016 which aims at reducing the time and cost involved in collection and disposal of waste.

Orientation Day at School Of Communication Studies

School of Communication Studies (SCS) , Panjab University, Chandigarh hosted the Orientation Session of first year Masters and Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass communication on Friday, 30th September.

The session was conducted by Chairperson of SCS, Prof. Dr. Sumedha Singh along with faculty member Prof. Dr. Bhavneet Bhatti.

The freshers were introduced to the academic details of their respective courses and were further informed of the rules and regulations of the department. The new students were made familiar with the 75 percent attendance rule along with the details of their evaluation and examination patterns.

The students were acquainted with the ‘Earn While You Learn’ scheme of Panjab University and were encouraged to take part enthusiastically. The faculty further encouraged the students to take up summer jobs and internships during summer vacations.

Moreover, the department clubs were introduced and the student queries were resolved. The session ended with a small refreshment get together.

Delegation from MC Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh) visits Chandigarh; praises MCC projects

Chandigarh, September 30: – Mr. Boya Yella Ramaiah, Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh) alongwith delegation of 42 councillors & officers visited the city beautiful, Chandigarh today.

The delegation was on its study tour regarding Best Practices of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

Today morning their day long sight visit schedule was started with the presentation on Best practices of Municipal Corporation at MCC office premises, Sector 17, Chandigarh. Smt. Sarbjit Kaur Dhillon, Mayor, Chandigarh welcomed the delegation followed by brief introduction of the projects and best practices and functions of the MCC.

The Mayor gave a brief presentation on Solid Waste Management system, Roads, Water Supply, Garden and Green belts, Street Lights, Tertiary Treated Water Supply, processing of C&D Waste, Property tax, management of Gaushalas, Vendor rehabilitation system and other projects of MCC.

After the presentation meeting, the delegation visited various best projects of MCC including Water Works, MRF Station, Sewerage Treatment Plant, C&D Waste Plant, Ind. area, Ph-I and Integrated Command & Control Centre, Sector 17, Chandigarh.

During their sight visits, different teams headed by nodal officers of MCC briefed about the projects at their respective sites.

The Mayor and the councilors of Kurnool praised the beauty of Chandigarh including best roads in the country, neat and clean parks, planned markets and no encroachments in the road sides. They appreciated the horticulture wing especially for maintaining more than 1800 neighborhood parks in the city. They also appreciated the cleanliness of the city and solid waste management system including management of STPs and running of MRF stations in city.

Chandigarh, September 30:- Chandigarh has been adjudicated as the winner alongwith Navi Mumbai in 10 lacs plus category of the Indian Swacchta League today by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. This award is attributed to the city’s enthusiastic participation in the Indian Swachhata League (ISL).

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh received the award from Sh. Kaushal Kishore, Minister of State, MoHUA at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi today during felicitation ceremony as part of the valedictory session of the ‘Swachh Shehar Samvaad and Technology exhibition’. She was accompanied by MC Joint Commissioner Ms. Isha Kamboj and Chandigarh team leader Sh. Rohit Kumar.

After receiving the award, Ms. Anindita Mitra extended heartiest compliments to the people of city specially the yuva teams for their enthusiastic participation in the Indian Swachhata League (ISL). She said that by doing so, the youth of Chandigarh has displayed its strong commitment towards the vision of ‘Garbage Free City’.

She elaborated that following the successful conduct of ISL activities across more than 1850 cities, a rigorous evaluation was undertaken, and the top city teams have been shortlisted for a special felicitation programme.

She said that in the Swachhata League, Chandigarh got an opportunity to detail its novel activity at the National level. Participation of the youth in the league, novel ideas in implementing activities and the improvement in urban cleanliness as a result of the activity, were the guidelines on the basis of which the National winners were decided. It is worthy of mention that Chandigarh had executed a novel human chain of more than 2000 youngsters and depicted four colour coded dustbins symbolising source segregation of waste. 

She further said that the contests underlined the magnitude of the effort made by the MC and its sanitation workers in ensuring cleanliness, taking the help of youth to increase public awareness on avoiding dumping of garbage, and sending the message of clean water sources etc.

Chandigarh, September 29:- Strengthening the machinery and equipment in Municipal Corporation’s fleet, Smt. Sarbjit Kaur Dhillon, Mayor, Chandigarh today flagged off new latest machines having Excavator-cum-loader, boom ladder, tipper hopper dumper, grabbing machine, back pack leaf blower and sewer inspection camera etc. worth Rs. 6.07 crores at MCC office premises, Sector 17, Chandigarh.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Dalip Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Anup Gupta, Deputy Mayor, other councilors and officers of MCC were present during the occasion.

While speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that with a major thrust on cleaning of sewer, lifting of C&D waste, horticulture waste, the MCC has equipped its engineering staff with new equipment and machinery. Some of the purchases include basic equipment, but others added new technological dimension to the fleet of MCC machinery & equipment, she added.

She said that equipment and machinery added by MCC include, 5 tipper hopper dumpers, 3 small tipper hopper dumpers, 3 excavator-cum-loader (backhoe loader), 2 sewer inspection camera, 1 grabbing machine, 2 boom ladder (8 mtr.), 20 tractors, 6 water tankers, 5 back pack leaf blowers, 70 brush cutters, 12 shrub masters, 2 cultivators from the dedicated budget allocations while 3 tipper hopper dumpers, 2 excavator-cum-loader (backhoe loaders) and 5 horticulture waste processing machines have been purchased under processing of Solid Waste Management budget allocation.

She briefed that the grabbing machine will help MCC move from manual maintenance of the city’s sewerage and drainage system to one backed by latest technology. Using inspection cameras, maintenance staff will be able to detect the type of blockage from outside and determine the equipment required for its cleaning. She said that grabbing machines are equipped with small, truck-mounted handles, which are lowered into the sewer to remove objects or waste blocking it and can also be used to carry them for disposal.

The Mayor further said that the system is being strengthened in the MCC so that service delivery will be improved and at the same time, the engineering staff at the cutting edge will be empowered and facilitated to deliver better. The equipment and machinery will give a boost to the cleanliness and smooth functioning of waste processing in the city, she added.

Two day workshop on Protein Biology Techniques Begins at Panjab University

A two day workshop on “Protein Biology Techniques and Applications-PBTA 2022” begins at Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University on 29thSeptember, 2022.Scientific Social Responsibility policy of DST-SERB is in place with a view to take science to the society at large.  The workshop had 50 participants that included faculty from colleges and research scholars from North of India.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Sudhir Kumar, Director Research Development Cell, Panjab University. He touched upon the idea that the science has to be responsible and should be accountable to the society. He appreciated the efforts of the department in organizing such an event wherein faculty, research scholars and students are being exposed to cutting edge techniques in studying role of proteins in health and disease.

Dr. Ashish Ganguly from CSIR-IMTECH, Chandigarh spoke on the methods to solve or predict protein structure. He enlightened the audience about use of artificial intelligence in solving protein structure. He has been able to solve the structure of gelosin which is an important protein in many diseases especially neurological and kidney condition. He emphasized that one can perform studies with limited resources, especially the college faculty keeping in mind that they have resource crunch. Later, Dr. Beena Krishnan from CSIR-IMTECH talked on protein structure prediction by various contemporary techniques.

Later, Prof. Ashwani Thakur from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur shared his work related to the protein responsible for the Huntington’s disease, it being a devastating neurological condition. His work has identified molecules, which may disrupt protein aggregation that is responsible for Huntington’s disease. Dr. Suman Thakur, Principal Scientist, CCMB, Hyderabad shared how the proteomic techniques can be used in developing biomarkers for SARS-CoV2diagnosis using saliva. He also shared his work related to cancer and even developing anti-cancer molecules.

On the day two,Dr. Abhay Pande, NIPER, Mohaliwould be talking on Protein chimerization for improving the short circulatory half-life of protein therapeutics. Dr. Sagarika Biswas, CSIR-IGIB, New Delhi would be sharing her work on developing biomarkers for Rheumatoid Arthritis.

The workshop is expected to provide the participants with a flavour of the ongoing research in the field of proteomics and help to apply these  in their research activities.

Governor launches accidental & disabilities insurance cover for MCC employees

Chandigarh, September 29:- Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh today launched accident & disabilities insurance cover for the Municipal Corporation employees. As per the scheme, Rs. 40 lacs will be given to families of account holders in case of accidental death or total disability.
This mega beneficiary scheme for MCC employees, conceived in collaboration with Punjab & Sind Bank, was launched during a programme held at Rani Laxmi Bai Mahila Bhawan, Sector 38-C, here today evening in the presence of Smt. Kirron Kher, Hon’ble Member Parliament, Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Sh. Dharam Pal, IAS, Worthy Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Sh Nitin Yadav, Home Secretary UT ,Sh. Swarup Kumar Saha, MD & CEO, Punjab and Sind Bank, senior officers and councilors of MCC.
While addressing the  employees of MCC and others present during the event, the Governor said that aiming to provide such exhaustive insurance coverage  to about 10500 employees working in the Municipal Corporation and their families was an excellent step. It was commendable that the insurance cover for was for  all its employees, not just regular but contractual, outsourced, daily wagers, employees from group A to group D. He also congratulated the Punjab & Sind Bank for this noble initiative, which has offered such huge benefit to all MCC employees.
He said that it is our responsibility to protect and safeguard the interests of workers in general and especially those who constitute  poor, deprived and disadvantage sections of the society. He said that this initiative shall go a long way towards creating a healthy work environment and higher productivity.
Smt. Kirron Kher, Member Parliament, Chandigarh said that this will give a huge relief to employees and their families. Earlier, in case of any accidental death of outsource employees, the MCC, being the principal employer was bound to give relief to the family of deceased employee out of its own funds, which was a big burden on the exchequer of the Corporation. Now the bank has given this mega insurance cover to the employees of MCC, which is indeed a joyous  news to all.
Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor , in her address, said that, that the MCC has started this scheme for all its 10500 employees working in  different wings of MC  including 925 door to door waste collectors, 543 daily wagers, 76 contract basis and 5272 on the outsourced staff, 1100 employees of Lions firm which is looking after the sanitation work of sectors from 31 to 62.
She said that presently, only group D employees were insured under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna (PMSBY) and Pradhan Mantri Jeewan Jyoti Bima Yojna (PMJJBY). The premium for these insurances is being paid by the MC @ Rs. 12/- and Rs. 330/- per annum per employee. The insurance cover upto Rs. 2 lacs only is payble under each scheme in case of natural/accidental death. But now the Punjab & Sind Bank has provided mega accidental/disabilities insurance cover of Rs. 40 lacs.
Sh. Dharam Pal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator said that this initiative of Municipal Corporation towards the welfare of its employees is probably the first of its kind in the entire country. He said it will not only cover the accidental or disabilities insurance but shall also provide various other services including education and care of  children of the deceased employees.
Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC said that zero balance salary accounts of all category of employees i.e. regular, contractual, daily wagers, outsourced, such as door to door waste collectors, safaimitras, safaikarmacharis have been opened in the P&SB, which has offered insurance in death case Rs. 40 lacs accidental coverage, total disability Rs. 40 lacs accidental coverage; Rs. 40 lacs for death due to animal bite, insect bite, snake bite.
She further said that in case of partial disability, the insurance cover will be given as per the percentage of the disability as mentioned in the schedule; Air accidental Rs. 1.20 crores; child education benefit from 12 years to 22 years upto two girls child Rs. 24 lacs (Rs. 12 lacs each), one girl and one boy, Rs. 12 lacs plus Rs. 6 lacs, two boys Rs. 12 lacs (6 lacs each) and in case of natural death Rs. 2.50 lacs will be given.
