Chandigarh, April 3:- The Mayor, Chandigarh Sh. Anup Gupta today called upon the newly recruited drivers in the Fire & Rescue department, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh to come forward and live up to their responsibilities.

As many as 32 drivers, who cleared the examination and tests, were handed over appointment letters by the Mayor during a special orientation programme held at Community Centre, Sector 21, Chandigarh in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Harjeet Singh, Deputy Mayor and other senior officers of MCC.

While congratulating them, the Mayor said that it is essential to maintain people’s confidence and faith in public service delivery system and it can be achieved through determination, dedication and devotion. He asked them to provide responsive administration at the base level stating that Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has always accorded high priority to public service delivery.

He said that with the motto of ‘We serve to Save’, every official of this department has onerous task to save the lives and property in case of fire/disaster and the main purpose is to help those in distress. The fire brigade was founded on the mottos of valour and sacrifice. It is geared to ‘Kill the fire before it kills you’, said the Mayor.

Lauded the efforts of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh for providing better opportunities to the citizens as well as youth for speeding up their process to fill up the posts in various wings, the Mayor said that Municipal Corporation has contributed a lot towards making Chandigarh No.1 in every segment.

The Mayor congratulated the newly drivers and said that in the interest of public welfare, special services which involve life saving or rescue operations, humanitarian services and emergent services during building collapses, train and motor accidents, drowning accidents, tree collapses, earth quake, oil and acid spillages etc. are being rendered by the fire brigade, which is a job of high responsibility.

The Mayor said that it is a proud moment for Chandigarh that today appointment letters to 32 drivers from different categories have been handed over. He said that the Fire and Rescue Wing of Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh is a Multi Hazard Response Unitand has entrusted with the task of Fire Fighting, Rescue and special service operations during emergencies.

Earlier, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC welcomed the chief guest and all the dignitaries. She said that the newly recruits will be imparted rigorous training at various Fire Stations to prepare them to meet out the requirements of peculiar nature of duty as well as to make them able to handle the latest fire fighting machinery and equipments to save the valuable life and property of the General Public of City Beautiful Chandigarh.

She said that the Fire Brigade is also in the process to procure the State of the Art machinery and equipments to cope up with fire fighting challenges in modern constructions and associated materials. The augmentation of workforce will result in increasing the effectiveness of Fire & Rescue Services in extinguishing fires and protecting the life and property of the citizens, she added.

Women SHGs from Himachal Pradesh meets Chandigarh Mayor and councillors

Chandigarh, April 1:- The women delegates from Himachal Pradesh on their Swachhata Yatra, today met with the City Mayor Sh. Anup Gupta, Commissioner MCC Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, and women councillors at Hotel Mount View for a valedictory session.

All the women SHGs were praised for their exceptional work and for being the flag bearers of Swachhata in society. They also discussed the mission to recognize and celebrate the transition from women in sanitation to women-led sanitation, aiming to make the mission of garbage-free city a success.

This joint initiative by SBM and DAY-NULM was promoting sustainable and effective waste management practices. Such initiatives help us in achieving our goals of a cleaner and greener environment.

On the 2nd day of the Swachh Yatra under the Swachhotsav, the self-help groups (SHGs) from Himachal Pradesh visited the city livelihood centre, common service centre, various other SHGs, Pink MRF, and Dhanas lake. The purpose of their visit was to witness and learn from the waste management and sanitation practices implemented in Chandigarh.

The SHGs were particularly impressed by the work of Sarwati SHG, which make candles from waste flowers collected from temples, Rani Laxmi Bai SHG, which converts waste clothes into cloth bags, Dhristi SHG and Naya Sa group. They saw how these women-led groups follow the 3R system and contribute to the goal of making Chandigarh a garbage-free city.

The visit to Pink MRF and Dhanas Lake further strengthened their tour towards waste management and sanitation practices. They witnessed how women were leading sanitation and waste management and admired their contribution to society.

Chandigarh, April 1:- Taking another step towards curbing  the stray dog menace in Chandigarh, Sh. Anup Gupta, city Mayor today flagged off two dog catching vehicles at MCC office premises in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh and other concerned officers of MCC.

With the addition of two dog catching vans to pick dogs for sterilisation and  immunisation and to give them proper medical treatment in the Animal Birth Control Centre of MCC.

A sector wise plan has been drawn up so that the staff of CAWA, the NGO appointed for ABC programme, will catch the non-sterilized dogs and sterilise them in order to control the rising population of dogs in the city and in the larger public interest.

Ms Anindita Mitra, Commissioner Municipal Corporation added that it has been decided that when the NGO starts working in a particular sector/area, they shall continue to do so till they have sterilised the entire female population of the sector/area. It has also been decided that this entire schedule shall be executed under intimation to and with the cooperation of the RWAs.

MCC Launches “Swachh Bazaar, Swachh Chandigarh” Campaign

*Starts door to door garbage collection in commercial areas*

*Aims at creating awareness amongst citizens to avoid banned plastic*

Chandigarh, April 1- In a unique initiative, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has launched a campaign called “Swachh Bazaar, Swachh Chandigarh” to promote cleanliness and hygiene in the market areas besides creating awareness to avoid use of banner plastic products.

While sharing the highlights of the campaign, Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Chandigarh said that the campaign will run from 1st April to 30th April aiming to focus on cleaning the markets, collecting segregated garbage, installing more dustbins and implement the plastic ban effectively.

He said that the main objective of the campaign will be to create awareness about the harmful effects of plastic waste and to encourage citizens to stop using plastic bags.

As part of the campaign, citizens who carry their own shopping bags made of clothes and jute will be appreciated and offered special discounts. The month of April will be celebrated on the theme of “Swachh Bazaar, Swachh Chandigarh” to encourage people to keep their surroundings clean and hygienic.

The MCC has also planned a special campaign for the Sabzi Mandi, where vendors and shopkeepers will be encouraged to participate in cleaning up the market and implement the scheme at ground level.

The campaign will also involve a shop-to-shop initiative, where pamphlets and stickers will be distributed to shopkeepers, encouraging them to promote cleanliness by pasting stickers at the entry points of their shops. Additionally, discounts and other schemes will be offered to customers who bring their own bags while shopping.

The Mayor also appealed to citizens to ensure their valuable participatation in the campaign and take necessary measures to keep their surroundings clean.”

To achieve the objective of the campaign, MCC has already deployed vehicles and manpower for garbage collection in commercial areas, coordinated with MWAs, and fixed timings for collection. Additionally, parking spots for door to door waste collection vehicles have also been deployed.

Chandigarh, March 31:- A delegation of office bearers of various Self Help Groups from Himachal Pradesh visited Chandigarh to celebrate Swachhotsav, a festival of cleanliness, and to learn about the best practices of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. The visit was to promote the convergence of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana- National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAY-NULM).

The delegation was welcomed with flowers and mementoes made from recycled items packed in hand-made cloth bags. All the standees and banners used during the event were biodegradable and made up of cloth, in an effort to promote zero waste event and sustainability.

During the event, officials of the MCC briefed about the projects of MCC in a detailed presentation on best practices and functions, including solid waste management, processing of construction & demolition (C&D) waste, sewerage treatment plant and many more practices.

The delegates also visited different projects handled by local self-help groups working with 3R projects like ‘Arpan’ which makes agarbattis from waste flowers, Jagruti, the self help group which makes herbal Holi Colors from floral waste, Bartan Bhandar and the self help group making art from waste materials. The delegates praised the work of SHGs and appreciated their work for reducing and reusing waste materials. They also visited Gaushala and saw the maintenance of community toilets handled by SHGs.

The beauty of Chandigarh, including its roads and clean environment, was also appreciated by the delegates. They praised the cleanliness of the city and the solid waste management system, along with other projects of MCC.

MCC celebrates ‘Swachh Kanjan’ pujan under Swachhotsav

*Mayor honours 108 little girls as champions of Swacch Chandigarh*

Chandigarh, March 29:- In a unique initiative, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh organized a zero waste ‘Swachh Kanjak’ programme on the auspicious occasion of Ashtami during Navratri under the banner of Swachhotsav, honouring the little champions of Swacchta.

During the programme at Community Centre, Sundar Nagar, Mauli Jagran, Mayor Sh. Anup Gupta, area councilor Smt. Bimla Devi and other councilors of MCC performed the rituals of Kanjak (Kanya Pooja), where 108 girls were welcomed by washing their feet followed by offering them ‘chunri’ and serving them food.

The traditional prashad of Halwa, Poori, Chana was prepared by women run Self Help Group. More than 600 Kanyas (girls) were served food. 

               The event was a completely Zero Waste event. The food was served on paper plates procured from women run SHG dovetailing the two National Missions of Govt. of India i.e. Swachh Bharat Mission and DAY-NULM.

While addressing the gathering, the Mayor saluted the contribution of women in leading Swachh Bharat Abhiyan movement. He said that the mission had also benefitted women in unforeseen ways. He said that the country was seeing a greater participation of women in the workforce after the success of the Mission. He cited the example of the Pink MRF in Sector 25, where all the waste is being handled by women workforce very efficiently.

He emphasized the need of segregation of waste at household level and use of biodegradable items and  stopping littering in public places. The Mayor also addressed the suggested them to adopt the habit of home composting by using their own kitchen waste.

The Mayor said that the event was organised under the 3 week long campaign of Swachhotsav 2023 launched by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) on 7th March 2023, the eve of International Women’s Day.

The event was aimed at creating awareness regarding the contribution of women in sanitation and to strengthen and scale up participation and leadership of women in Swachhata. To spearhead the mission of making Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) no.1 in the Nation in terms waste minimization at source, reuse and recycle of waste, 100% scientific processing of waste generated. MCC organized a viable, replicable and scalable zero waste event of mass Kanjak. In the event no single use plastic product, plastic bottles was used, floral decoration, paper plates were used.

Sufficient safai karamcharis were deployed along with one waste collection vehicles at the venue while water sprinkler was deployed to curb dust pollution. Adequate number of twin litter bins inside the venue were also placed.

During the programme Mayor and councilors also distributed them school bags with recycled stationary items besides giving them ‘Swachhta Ke Puzzles’ and name stickers depicting the four type of segregation of waste i.e. dry waste in blue bin, wet waste in green bin, hazardous waste in black bin and sanitary waste in red bin.

Before addressing the gathering, the Mayor also visited an exhibition highlighting the colourful and attractive displays of products made from waste including arrangements of herbal colours made from flower waste, cloth bags, Arpan agarbati made from flower waste and other items were displayed by Self Help Groups. It was a zero waste programme where all the display and arrangements of food were served on biodegradable material.

During the programme a Nukkar Natak on Swachhata was also staged by the group of unique arts society in which they emphasized the need of segregation of waste at source level and do not litter on public places besides stop the usage of single use plastic products.

Chandigarh, March 27:- To promote, encourage, and strengthen women’s involvement and leadership in Swachhata, a team of 10 women leaders of Self Help Groups has proceed to Shimla for their two days knowledge sharing programme.

Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Chandigarh today early morning flagged off the team Chandigarh to celebrate Swachhotsav, which evolves from women in swachhata to women led swachhata.

While sharing about the Swachhotsav and Swachhata Yatra, the Mayor said that Swachhotsav is being celebrated all over the nation under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Members and officers who perform continuous sanitation management tasks in the states will go to other states as part of this utsav to learn new skills. The visit of visitors from various states has been referred to as Swachhata Yatra during this programme, the Mayor added.

In order to scale up waste management and waste to wealth projects among the selected women Self help groups, the team Chandigarh visited Shimla to encourage capacity building, cross-learning, and sharing of best practices.

They have toured many locations and have gained excellent exposure to waste management and sanitary practices. They also learned about the Municipal Corporation of Shimla’s best practises, initiatives and projects. They also covered a wide range of topics, such as door-to-door collection, waste segregation, making compost from waste, and much more.

They also met with various political leaders of Shimla and highlight some significant actions and projects of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh also.

Panjab University mulls to launch Minor degree in Universal Human Values

The New Education Policy-2020 (NEP-2020) specifically states that “education is fundamental for achieving full human potential, developing an equitable and just society, and promoting national development”. Keeping in mind the core objective of NEP, a special lecture is being organized in Panjab University on ‘Minor Degree in Universal Human Values’.  The lecture will be delivered by Prof Rajneesh Arora, Chairman NCC-IP (AICTE) and member of the working group of AICTE on Universal Human Values. Prof Arora is MD, Amritsar Group of Colleges and is former Vice Chancellor, Punjab Technical University. The function will be presided over by Prof Renu Vig, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. 

AICTE has formed a National Coordination Committee for Student Induction (NCC-IP) under Chairmanship of Prof Rajneesh Arora to prepare newly admitted undergraduate students for the new stage in their life by facilitating a smooth transition from their home and school environment into the college and university environment. AICTE with the help of Industry-Academia experts, has framed the curriculum for Minor Degree in Universal Human Values (UHV) to develop teachers, parents and policy makers of tomorrow who will have a humane worldview along with technical skills. UGC has alreadyframedthe guidelines on ‘MulyaPravah- Inculcation of Human Values and Professional Ethics in Higher Education Institutions’.

The faculty members of Panjab University, affiliated colleges of Panjab University and CRIKC Institutes will be attending the lecture. To register for this lecture, the online form https://shorturl.at/aorH9 is required to be filled. 

The lecture will be organized on March 27, 2023 (Monday) at Golden Jubilee Hall, Panjab University, Sector 14, Chandigarh from  3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, Professor Renu Vig disclosed that Panjab University intends to initiate a transformation towards holistic and value-based education in accordance with aspirations articulated in NEP 2020 so that University incessantly produces socially responsible and well-rounded graduates with world-class skills. She highlighted that the NEP 2020 gives a clarion call to make the important and urgently required effort for nurturing students to their full human potential, so they can contribute to the development of an equitable and just society and promote national development. Professor Vig further shared that this minor degree course will facilitate developing sufficient number of teachers to impart value-based education right from primary to higher education across the country. It will have a direct impact on desirable, common graduate attributes, enhancing employability in the area of the major degree. Further, in the present state of increasing problems of human-human conflict, global warming and climate change, minor degree in UHV will help prepare the urgently required technical professionals for sustainable and value-based living.  Minor Degree will carry 18 to 20 credits in addition to the credits essential for obtaining the Under Graduate Degree in Major Discipline (i.e. 163 credits usually).  Senior Professors and Deans of Panjab University, affiliated colleges and CRIKC Institutes are expected to attend this special lecture.
