PU CET (UG) Entrance Test – 2023

Panjab University, Chandigarh conducted the PU CET (UG) Entrance Test – 2023 on 23.04.2023 (Sunday) for admission to undergraduate courses.  Total seventeen centres were created, fourteen at Chandigarh, one each at Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana and Sri Muktsar Sahib.  The detailed percentage and total number of candidates appeared  in this entrance test subject wise was as under:-
Mathematics   :   86.44%  (2078 out of 2404)
Chemistry : 87.78%  (4585 out of 5223)
Physics : 87.75% (4583 out of 5223)
Biology : 88.21%  (2761 out of 3130)

Total 87.65%  candidates appeared in the test.  Flying squad and observers were deputed to every centre for routine checking and smooth conduct of the test. The test was conducted satisfactorily and no untoward incident was reported from any of the examination centres.

PU Syndicate Meeting

Panjab University Syndicate in its meeting held today deliberated on all the agenda items and few of them are as follows:-


The Syndicate approved the Minutes of various Screening-cum-Evaluation/Selection committees.


The Syndicate also approved the minutes of the Admission Facilitation Committee dated 28.03.2023 with regard to various admission related cases.
The Syndicate approved the assignment of faculties to Professor Rumina Sethi, Dean of University Instruction.
The Syndicate approved the execution of following Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs):-
· MoU between Centre for Medical Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh and PGIMER, Chandigarh
· MoU between Centre for Nuclear Medicine, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Fortis Hospital, Mohali.
· MoU between Panjab University, Chandigarh and Yokohama National University (Japan).

The Syndicate approved the Appointment of Lt. Gen. K.J. Singh, as Honorary Professor in the Department of Defence & National Security Studies.
The Syndicate approved that the Inspection Committee constituted by the University to visit Bhai Nagahia Singh Memorial Girls College, Alamgir, Ludhiana for grant of extension in affiliation, be withdrawn and the Syndicate also allowed the Trust to discontinue the College stage wise for the session 2022-23 and other conditions as per Regulations 13.2 to 13.5 at page 161 of P.U. Calendar, Volume-I, 2007.
The Syndicate approved the enquiry report dated 22.02.2023 submitted by Shri Jagroop Singh Mahal, Enquiry Office against Shri Niraj Kumar, Senior Assistant, Boys Hostel No.5, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The report opined that Niraj Kumar violated Rule1.1 of the Rules governing conduct of University employees & is guilty of serious misconduct. He will be imposed major penalty and will be demoted.
The Syndicate approved the minutes of the meeting to look into the matter regarding theft of 32 lacs from Panjab University Constituent College, Nihal Singh Wala, Moga and decided that a third party audit will be conducted and the responsibility will be fixed.

The Syndicate approved the minutes of the Affiliation Committee dated 04.02.2023 with regard to grant of temporary extension of affiliation in the course/s/subject/s to the Colleges situated in the Punjab State, for the session 2022-2023.
The Syndicate approved the recommendations of the Committee dated 04.08.2022 to finalize the process of advertisement of posts of Assistant Professors at P.U. Constituent Colleges.
The Syndicate approved the Regulation committee’s recommendation regarding the framework for admission to B.A., B.Sc, B.Com (Honors) school under NEP 2020.

MCC to connect masses with mother Earth through cleanups & avoiding banned plastic

Chandigarh, April 22:- Aims at connecting masses with the Mother Earth through cleanups and avoiding plastic, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has celebrated International Mother Earth day in a unique initiative with the citizens of the city beautiful today.

By organizing small events to bring big change in the lives of citizens, the MCC has organized special cleaning drives in various parts of city besides its routine cleaning process alongwith distributing cloth bags and badges to the masses.

During the programmes at different areas, awareness campaigns have been organized to stop the usage of single use plastic and pasted plastic waste ban stickers on the shops in sector 17 market and other areas.

Separate teams of the Municipal Corporation, Presidents and office bearers of Resident Welfare Associations and Market Welfare Associations and ‘Swachhta’ Warrior Moms wished all the shopkeepers with flower sticks, who are taking measures to avoid use of single use plastic and offering discounts to customers for bringing cloth bags while coming for shopping.

The MCC also distributed cloth bags to the customers and citizens made by the city based Self Help Groups. The cloth bags have been made with the old cloths donated by the citizens to the MCC under the 3R initiative.

While speaking on the International Mother Earth day, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC said that one of the best ways to connect with the earth is through cleanup. She said that people should go on a walk with a trash bag and help to clean up any plastic that they find. She said that the Government has initiated a series of programmes to Save the Earth from deforestation to Save water by involving the students to inculcate in them the spirit of love for Mother Nature.

Darohar- A three Day Workshop (18th-20th April) organized by the department of History to commemorate World Heritage Day

Chandigarh, April 18th-20th, 2023 – The Department of History organized ‘Dharohar– a Three Day Workshop’ on imbibing skills towards sustainable and holistic Development: a historical approach, held from 18th-20th April to commemorate World Heritage Day, the International Day for Monuments and Sites. The inaugural ceremony of the workshop began with the welcome address by Dr. Jasbir Singh, the organizing secretary of the workshop. The distinguished guest of honour, Prof. Anju Suri, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, presided over the ceremony and expressed her pride and happiness over the workshop’s combination of academic and vocational components. She emphasized the value of water conservation and provided the participants with information on water management strategies as a component of the natural heritage. Dr. Ashish Kumar, during his technical session gave insights on relevance of pottery in India’s Ancient past, followed by another session by Prof. Paru Bal Sidhu, Chairperson, Department of AIHC&A, who discussed on pottery types. Later on, along with Dr. Priyatosh Sharma, the workshop director, and Dr. Ashish Kumar, the workshop convener, the participants engaged in hands-on pottery-making during the practical session.

The workshop’s second day began with Dr. Priyatosh Sharma, chairperson Department of History, as the featured speaker who spoke on “the Mughal and Rajput Paintings”, followed by the practical session on recreating historic paintings on pottery.

The third day of the workshop, themed- ecology and environment traditions, was graced by the presence of esteemed guest, Prof. Suman Mor, Department of Environment Studies. She emphasized the importance of environmental care and spoke on various environment traditions in India. The keynote speaker of the session, Prof. Renu Thakur, threw light on the designing and minting of coins in ancient India. The academic session was followed by the plantation drive to celebrate natural heritage, hosted in collaboration with the respected guest Mr. Anil Thakur, Divisional Engineer (Hort.).

Finally, the workshop concluded with the Naghma Khayalon Ka- a cultural programme. The special guest Prof. Ashok Kumar, Department of Hindi and Dr. Jasbir Singh, Department of History spoke about the literature as heritage. The students from various departments of the University and colleges of Chandigarh participated and performed songs, poetry, shayari etc. in ‘Naghma’ to mark the end of the three day workshop- Dharohar.

UIPS organizes a two-day Symposium-cum-Workshop on Pharma QbD

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS)organized a two-day National Symposium-cum-Workshop on “Contemporary Trends, Tools and Techniques in Pharma Quality by Design (QbD)” to apprise the pharmacy professionals on applications of Pharma QbD and related paradigms. The symposium was conducted under the able guidance of Professor Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, Former Chairperson & Dean, UIPS, PU and Emeritus Professor, Chitkara College of Pharmacy (CCP), Chitkara University, Punjab as the Symposium Chair. Around 200 delegates from 19 states of the country will be mentored from renowned resource faculty from academic and industry. 

Though coined as the ‘Pharmacy Capital of the World’, India is mainly focused on generic drugs and vaccines, however, it is on the threshold of venturing into innovative products which is also mandate included in this term’s budget proposed by the Government of India. This coupled with the adoption of new ICH (Q8 to Q14) guidelines further reinforcethe inevitability and vitalityof implementing such QbD-associated principles today. Being the frontrunner pharma institute of excellence, UIPS always takes the lead on the professional front and thus, this Symposium-cum-Workshop was conceived to articulate the importance of QbD principles and give hands-on training to both the young students and established professionals by roping in stalwart experts in the domain.

The event was inaugurated by Professor Renu Vig, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. In her inaugural address, she stressed on the importance of recognizing challenges and limitations of pharmaceutical industry especially in the wake of recent pandemic. She also sensitized the students that success is not measured by end results but the process of working sincerely, ethically and with full commitment.

Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Organizing Secretary, and Chairperson UIPS extended a cordial welcome to the audience motivating students to learn and take newer challenges. This was followed by address by the Professor Bhoop, who emphasized that QbD based principles are an ardent need of the hour to comply with regulatory requirements and to attain pharma quality excellence.

The event included keynote address on Pharmaceutical Product Development and Manufacturing under QbD Framework’ by Dr Gautam Samanta, Vice President & Head, QbD & Tech Transfer, Cipla Ltd., Mumbai, Maharashtra.He elaborated on the need and applications of QbD in pharma sector by very articulately giving simple yet tangible and practical examples from his long experience in pharma industry.

UIPS very proudly showcased its long and glorious journey of almost 80 years in the form of a video presentation. The CD and e version of the Symposium Abstract Booklet were released by the dignitaries. Inauguration ended with words of gratitude by the Organizing Secretary from CCP, Professor Thakur Gurjeet Singh.

The first day program ended with a hands-on training by Dr Muralidhara Anandamurthy, JMP, Bengaluru, Karnataka on QbD/ DoE Workshop using JMP Software.

Chandigarh, April 20:- Shri M. Venkatesan, Chairman of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, reviewed the guidelines/schemes for saraikarmacharis are being followed properly and other issues related to them alongwith implementation of “The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013”. 

The Chairman held meeting with senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration and Municipal Corporation, including Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC, Sh. Vinay Partap Singh, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Kanwardeep Kaur, IPS, SSP, Chandigarh, Sh. Shashank Singh, Principal Private Secretary to the chairman,

all Joint Commissioners, Chief Engineer, Superintending Engineers, Medical Officer of Health, Executive Engineers, and Union Leaders of Safai Karamcharis besides individual safaikarmacharis.

The Chairman directed the officers of Chandigarh Administration and Municipal Corporation to check if the guidelines of the government regarding safaikarmacharis and sewermen were being followed properly. He directed the officers to pursue the proposals and cases of all the regular, contractual and outsourced safaikarmacharis pending in different levels.

He also directed the officers to blacklist those contractors who were paying less salary and not paying salaries on time to the safaikarmacharis and sewermen. He said that the contractor must follow “Equal work, Equal pay” government rule and disburse salary in bank accounts of all the safaikarmacharis on time.

During the meeting, the chairman also reviewed “The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013”, discussed the grievances of Safai Karamcharis, and also covered other issues related to Safai Karamcharis.

Along with the meeting, the chairman also interacted with Safai Karamcharis individually. All outsourcing agencies/contractors responsible for maintaining toilets were also present at the meeting, along with individual Safai Karamcharis, housekeeping staff, and group D workers.

International Earth Day Celebrations at Panjab University

The Technology Enabling Centre (DST-TEC) of Panjab University celebrated International Earth Day on 19th April, 2023 in the UICET-Auditorium, Panjab University. Students of Engineering, Sciences, Arts, Social Science and other streams attended the auspicious occasion. The theme of this Earth Day celebration was “Indian Philosophy on Environment”. Er. Gopal Arya, Renowned Environmentalist (All India Convener – Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi (PSG)) was the expert speaker.

Sh. Satpal Jain (Ex-MP, Chandigarh), Prof. Amrit Pal Toor (Chairperson, UICET), Prof. C R Suri (Chairman, DST-TEC), Prof. Rupinder Tewari (Mentor, DST-TEC), Prof. Manu Sharma (Coordinator, DST-TEC), Mr. Praveen (Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi, Punjab), Prof. Rakesh Sharda (PAU Ludhiana), Sh. Prabhu Nath (Rtd. Air force), Mr. Rajiv Gupta, Sh. Satyender Ji, Ms. Renu Gupta, Haryaval Panjab, and other dignitaries were also present for celebrating Earth Day. Prof. Manu Sharma, Coordinator DST-TEC welcomed all the guests and participants. He urged that we need to develop sustainable and environmental-friendly technologies for the betterment of our society.

During his talk, Er. Gopal Arya said, “Earth Day is an annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Mother Nature provides air, water, seeds, forests, food etc. to us and it’s our responsibility to save our nature”. He said that once our country was described as a “golden sparrow” where several God’s took birth during each Yuga and now due to eco-system imbalance our country have worst air quality index. Several cities are facing rise in temperature, extinction of flora and fauna, reduction in water level etc., so there is an urgent need of Ecosystem restoration which should be conceptualised efficiently during this decade by our youths. He added, “we need trees for our environment, breathe, and even after death for our funeral. During Lockdown, when everyone was at home, the Nature revives as there was no one to disturb the ecological balance”. He provided facts that if it rains 5000 litre, we get only 1 litre is the drinking water. He gave examples of Cherapunji and Jaisalmer to evaluate the value of natural water resource. Cherapunji receives maximum rainfall but have crisis for drinking water whereas Jaisalmer receives least rainfall but have better utilization. For the betterment of our environment, we need to change our attitude towards nature, empathises on betterment of nature, and change our lifestyle. He urged the youth to eliminate single-use plastic from our daily life and try to reduce our carbon footprints.

Er. Saksham Shukla, a student of UIET, Panjab University was highly impressed with the informative knowledge shared by Er. Gopal Arya. He said, “We all should adopt AEL (Attitude change, Empathetic, Lifestyle) technology for the betterment of our Mother Nature”. Dr. Pankaj Sharma, Manager (DST-TEC) said, “We have to change our attitude & lifestyle and use our traditional knowledge & wisdom to protect our environment.”

Prof. Rupinder Tewari shared that Panjab University and Chandigarh Administration have their vision to protect our environment. All the participants were enlightened with the vision of Er. Gopal Arya and made promise for the sustainable growth of mother India.

Chandigarh, April 18:- Due to replacement of 16” dia CI pipe line alongwith flow meter over 16” dia pipe line for supplying clear water to Sector 38 West and 39 A & B, Chandigarh. During this replacement the schedule of water supply will be as under:

19.04.2023 (Wednesday)

Morning: 3.30 am to 9.00 am (Normal Water Supply)

The Evening water supply from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm will be as under:-

·         There will be low water supply in Sector 1 to 11, 14 to 18, 21 A, 22 A & B, 25 and PGI, Chandigarh

·         There will be no evening water supply to Sector 38 (W), 39 A& B, Village Dadumajra and Colony Maloya. The supply of water this sectors through Water Tankers only in Evening

Dr. Naresh Kumar, coordinator ECE department, UIET along with Dr Sumit Budhiraja, Dr Neeraj Sharma, Dr. Pardeep Kaur, Dr. Harvinder Kaur, Mr. Jasveer Singh, & Ms. Rinki and 127 students of third year of ECE, UIET, Panjab University Chandigarh have visited lab facilities at Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Ramgarh on April 13, 2023. Students interacted with the scientists of TBRL & they felt motivated and asked the scientists their recruitment procedure. It was wonderful experience to visit the labs.
