CALEM workshop commenced at PU

Chandigarh May 20, 2019 

The inaugural of the seven days National workshop on Qualitative Research Methods in Social Sciences with focus on the theme Equity and Social Justice from May 20 -29, 2019, organised by Centre for Academic Leadership & Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh under PMMMNMTT scheme of MHRD began today at ICSSR, Panjab University, Chandigarh. 

 Prof. Padma S. Sarangapani from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, in her keynote address, dwelled upon the three ideas relevant to the way of doing qualitative research i.e. engaging patiently with subjects, getting them to talk and evoking the idea of self as research instrument. She also emphasised the relationship between researcher and researched and its importance in qualitative research.

 Prof. Krishna Kumar, Former Director NCERT, New Delhi chaired the inaugural session where he made all the participants ponder about the word quality in qualitative research where quality reminds us about the nature of life and continual of the relationship of researcher and researched is very essence of qualitative research. 

Prof. Devinder Singh, Secretary to Vice Chancellor, Panjab University 
highlighted the prejudices prevailing in the society and dire need to deliberate upon these issues. 

 Dr. Jatinder Grover, CALEM coordinator from Department of Education, Panjab University extended welcome to all the dignitaries and expressed that the workshop provides an opportunity to deliberate at length on various issues related to qualitative research. 

 The background paper on the theme of the workshop was presented by Prof. Satvinderpal Kaur, Program Coordinator, emphasising the need to go beyond the dynamics of the numbers and unravel the hidden realities through the tradition of the qualitative research. 

  Prof. Latika Sharma, Chairperson of the Department extended vote of thanks to all luminaries present during the inaugural. 

A session on Two Ideas on Social Science by Prof. Emeritus Bhupinder Singh, Department of Political Science, followed the inaugural. He emphasised that the method of research, quantitative or qualitative, comes from two different conceptions of social sciences where methodically collected evidences are crucial and he also explained the epistemological issues of generating and disseminating knowledge. The session concluded with the questions by participants which were explicated by the resource person.

Award to PU Faculty by the Linnaean Society of London

Chandigarh May 20, 2019 

The Linnaean Society of London has awarded Dr. Ranjana Jaiswara, DST-INSPIRE Faculty, Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh a prestigious research grant of £ 1000 (British pound) for the year 2019. The current research grant from the Linnaean Society of London is to explore and document diversity of Indian cricket species based exclusively on their acoustic signals. Crickets sound producing structure is now being extensively studied by bioengineers and nanotechnologists to design highly efficient and smaller speakers for portable devices like mobile phones 
and hearing aids for humans. The Linnaean Society of London is the world’s oldest active biological society founded in 1788 and named in the honor of the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus, “Father of Modern Taxonomy”. It is an international society of many prominent scientists dedicated to the study of, and the dissemination of information concerning, natural history, evolution, and taxonomy of biological specimens. 

Dr. Ranjana recently joined PU with India’s most distinguished faculty award by the Department of Science and Technology.  She pursued her PhD degree from the top most institute, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in collaboration with Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France. Over a decade, Dr. Ranjana’s research work has been focused on demonstrating the use of acoustic signals as an efficient tool in addressing the serious problem of species identification in biology. Scientific publications in the international journals of Zoological Journal of 
Linnaean Society, London and PLoS ONE are a few to evidence.

56th Panjab University Colloquium

Chandigarh May 20, 2019 

56th Panjab University Colloquium cum 4th Shenmar Memorial Oration is being organized by Panjab University(PU), Chandigarh on May 21, 2019 at 9.30 am at Golden Jubilee Hall, PU. 

 Sh Parameswaran Iyer, Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India will deliver the lecture on mplementation of Large Scale Social Transformation Programmes: Lessons from the Swachh Bharat Mission. He is leading the flagship Swachh Bharat Mission and the National Rural Drinking Water Programme of Govt. of India. A 1981 batch IAS officer joined the World Bank in 2009. Prior to his 
current appointment, Mr. Iyer was serving as Manager for Water in the World Bank based in Washington DC and he has been working on water supply and sanitation issues since June 2012. He has over 20 years of experience in the water supply and sanitation sector.  

 Sh. Iyar will deliberate on Swachh Bharat Mission. The Swachh Bharat Mission has revolutionized sanitation in India; India has brought over 50 crore people out of open defecation and halved the global open defecation burden, in just five years. The story of India going from a sanitation coverage of 39% to 99% in five years is unparalleled. India has harnessed the power of its people to bring about a fundamental shift in their collective conscience and change a centuries-old habit, in half a decade. The talk will highlight key points of how Swachh Bharat Mission transcended from a government programme to mass movement, a Jan Andolan. 

The Swachh Bharat journey has laid down a blueprint for future government supported and people led transformations. 

 Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU will be the chief guest, whereas, Prof. 
T.R. Sharma, Executive Director, NABI, Mohali is guest of honour. Prof. Girish Sahani, Former Secretary, DSIR and DG-CSIR will be presiding over the function.

चंडीगढ़: लोकसभा की एक सीट के लिए रविवार को चंडीगढ़ में वोट सुबह सात बजे शुरू हुआ।

चंडीगढ़ के जागरूक मतदाता जिन्होंने अपने मत का इस्तेमाल करके लोकतन्त्र के महापर्व में अपनी अाहुति डाली है।

चंडीगढ़: Lok Sabha Election 2019 में पंजाब में सातवें और अंतिम चरण के मतदान में शांतिपूर्ण हो रहा है।

सेक्टर-36, सेक्टर-18 और सेक्टर-9 में होंगे वुमन पोलिंग बूथ : 
चंडीगढ़ में इस बार कुल तीन एेसे पोलिंग बूथ बनाए गए हैं, जहां पर सारा काम सिर्फ महिला स्टाफ ही संभालेंगी।

एक पोलिंग बूथ एमसीएम काॅलेज सेक्टर-36, न्यू पब्लिक स्कूल सेक्टर-18 और कार्मल काॅन्वेंट स्कूल सेक्टर-9 को शामिल किया गया है। 

चंडीगढ़,पंजाब के सभी मतदाताओं से अपील हैं कि 19 मई को अपने मतदान का प्रयोग करने के लिए अवश्य जाए जो भी उम्मीदवार आपको सही लगे उसको वोट अवश्य दे !

वहीं चंडीगढ़ में कुल 36 उम्मीदवार चुनाव लड़ रहे हैं, जिनमें 9 महिलाएं हैं। इस निर्वाचन क्षेत्र में कुल 597 मतदान केंद्र बनाए गए हैं। चंडीगढ़ निर्वाचन क्षेत्र में कुल 6,46,084 मतदाता हैं, जिनमें 3,41,640 पुरुष मतदाता हैं; 3,04,423 महिला मतदाता और 21 मतदाता थर्ड जेंडर के हैं।

चंडीगढ़ में अब तक 22.30 फीसद वोटिंग हुई है। कई जगह मतदान केंद्रों पर लंबी कतारें लगी हैं तो कुछ जगहों पर अभी कम संख्‍या में वोटर आए हैं। 

मतदान के लिए कडी़ सुरक्षा की गई है। मतदान सुबह सात बजे शुरू हुआ।

चंडीगढ़ के मतदाता काफी जागरूक है।

अपने मत का प्रयोग करना जानते हैं।

फिर भी हमारी अपील है कि 19 मई को अपने मतदान का प्रयोग करने के लिए अवश्य जाए जो भी उम्मीदवार आपको सही लगे उसको वोट अवश्य दे !

Workshop by Public Administration, PU

Chandigarh May 17, 2019 

Department of Public Administration, Panjab  University, Chandigarh under the UK-India Research Council’s project “Transforming India’s Green Revolution through Research and Empowerment for  Sustainable Food Supplies (TIGR2ESS) organized a workshop titled “Food Grains and Health” by Professor Richa Puri, Department of Botany, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Dr Poonam  Khanna, Assistant Professor of Nutrition in School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh.

 Professor Ramanjit Kaur Johal, Co-Principal Investigator and Chairperson, 
Department of Public Administration, Panjab University introduced the TIGR2ESS project and opined that the project aims to define the requirements and set the policy agenda for a ‘second Green Revolution’ in India focussing  on skill development, health and well being, framed by demographic changes affecting rural communities and feminisation 
of smallholder farming systems. The project will develop and strengthen alliances across a carefully selected network of UK and Indian experts, build  long-term research capacity and partnerships for sustainable agriculture that will set India on the path to a second Green Revolution. The project is being led by University of Cambridge in which around 20 collaborating institutions from UK and India.

 Professor Richa Puri delivered an introductory lecture on “Minor cereals of the World, India and Punjab”. Professor Puri stated that out of the estimated 75,000 species of edible plants, only about 150 have been used and of these only about 30 species provide 90% of the world’s food. She further deliberated on the history of cereals. Professor Puri discussed at length different forms of cereals and millets of the world, India and Punjab and also carried out a comparison of millets with wheat on the basis of their nutrient content. She concluded that though the governments have 
been initiating policies and programmes to promote cultivation of millets against the dominating cropping pattern of wheat and rice but still the success of these initiatives is far from satisfactory.

The workshop was attended by faculty and researchers from Department of Public Administration, interns from PGIMER and delegates from Mehr Baba Charitable Trust, Fatehgarh Sahib. Both the sessions were highly interactive and were appreciated for giving a strong understanding and awareness about food grains and nutrition.

 The Centre for Leadership & Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab University Chandigarh under the aegis of (Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching) PMMMNMTT, MHRD, Govt of India is organizing 7 days’ national workshop from May 20-26, 2019 on Qualitative Research Methods in Social Sciences with the theme Equity and Social Justice at ICSSR Hall, Panjab University. The keynote speaker will be Prof. Padma M. Sarangapani from Tata 
Institute of Social Science, Mumbai and the inaugural session will be chaired by Prof. Krishna Kumar, Padma Shri and former Director NCERT, New Delhi.
