P.U. to play a role of technology enabler for the region

Chandigarh August 6, 2019 

 The first meeting of the Programme Advisory Group (PAG) of Technology Enabling  Centre(TEC) Panjab University sanctioned by Department of Science and Technology, New  Delhi, Government of India was held under the Chairmanship of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice  Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. He shared with the members that Panjab University is already geared up to take newer initiative as proposed under the mandate  of TEC and he further affirmed a full support to the Coordinator and Co-Coordinator so as to enable Industry Academia toward commercialisation. 


        Panjab University is one among the nine institutes which were selected, for setting up TEC Centre, after a competition at ICT Mumbai last year.  Under this centre Panjab University would play a role of enabler for transferring the technologies from Academia to Industry besides University would also create the data base of the 
expertise available in the area for the industry, mining of the technologies, identifying and sorting the problems of industry helping MSME’s so that the intellect available in the academia could be utilised for development of products for the betterment of human life. 


        Under this centre, PU would organise various innovation events, workshops, idea generations, look to possibility of industry sponsored PhD’s, technology evaluations etc. The University would map various industries and create a data base with priority target in the area of Bio Medical Devices, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Engineering & IT and Food & Agriculture. 


        PAG members discussed the view points and approved the proposed agenda of PU-TEC for first year. The members who participated in the discussion included  Mr. Sarvjit Singh Virk, President CII, Dr. DNV Kumara Guru, Director External Relations, ISB Mohali, Dr. Pushvinder Jit Singh, Managing Director, Tynor Orthotics, Prof. Arun 
K. Baranwal, PGIMER Chandigarh, Dr. Anita Aggarwal & Dr. Krishna Kanth Pulicherla represented DST, New Delhi, Dr. Vinay Mehta from Chitkara, Prof. Rupinder Tewari, Prof. Rakesh Tuli, Prof. Manu Sharma, Co-Coordinator TEC and Prof. Sanjeev Puri, Coordinator TEC. Panjab University is expected to receive a grant of Rs. 1 crore for the first year followed by further extensions for a period of 5 years amounting to Rs. 5 crores.

Commissioner opens open air gym-cum-gymnastic centre at sector 48-A

Chandigarh, August 6:- Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today dedicated open air gym-cum-gymnastic centre in a park at sector 48-A in presence of Sh. Davesh Moudgil, area councilor, representatives of RWAs and officers of MCC.

During the occasion, the Commissioner and area councilor also planted saplings of ornamental and medicinal trees in the park. The Commissioner addressed the gathering and said that it is equal responsibility of the local residents to maintain the beauty of the park by keeping the gym-cum-gymnastic centre and proper upkeep of the saplings planted.

Sh. Davesh Moudgil informed that a campaign has been launched today to plant saplings of different medicinal and ornamental plants in the ward at a cost of Rs. 20 lacs including plantation of trees including Golden Bottle Brush, Copper Bottle Brush, Ficus reiznold and Fox Tail palm etc.

He informed that the gym-cum-gymnastic centre has been provided at a cost of Rs. 3 lacs including latest equipments i.e. parallel bars, surf board (double), seated pedal trainer, space walker, riding trainer and wab board or abbs shaper etc.

Adviser reviews Smart City Projects

Chandigarh, 6th August 2019: A meeting to review the status of projects under Smart City Mission Chandigarh was held under the Chairmanship of Sh. Manoj Kumar Parida, Advisor to the Administrator, U.T., Chandigarh in the presence of senior officers of Chandigarh Administration.  

Sh. K.K. Yadav, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh who is also CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. briefed the Chairman that tenders for projects work Rs. 111.00 Crore has been received by Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. which includes major projects like Public Bike Sharing, Legacy Waste Bio Mining at Daddumajra and E-governance services among other projects in the city.  

The Advisor directed that the tenders for these 9 projects must be finalized by the end of August, 2019.  CEO, CSCL further apprised that DPR’s / RFP’s of projects of worth more than Rs. 900.00 Crore has been approved or are under review by the Technical Committee.  The tenders for these works will be floated maximum by 31.08.2019.  The Advisor directed that the pilot project for 24×7 water supply in Manimajra should be re-worked at the earliest and tenders for the same must be finalized by 15.09.2019.  The major project which is coming up includes Up-gradation of 5 nos. Sewerage Treatment Plants and Construction of one new Sewerage Treatment Plant at Kishangarh with total cost of Rs. 550.00 Crore.

It was also apprised that the technical proposal for development of integrated Command and Control Centre in Sector-17, Chandigarh has been received from Bharat Electronics Ltd. with whom the Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. has signed the MOU which is under evaluation and soon will be brought to Board of Directors for its approval.  

The Advisor directed that the Police houses in Sector-17, Chandigarh which is designated site for ICCC Building should be vacated not later than 20th August, 2019 and Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. should immediately float the tenders for construction of building for housing the ICCC.  He also stressed that a single mobile application should be developed for all the services in the city and existing applications should be integrated with this app for the ease of citizens.  He directed that the work of Legacy Waste Bio Mining at Dadumajra should be started at the earliest, so as to give relief to the residents of Daddumajra from the foul smell and lechatte, oozing out from the garbage dump.  The Commissioner apprised that under the waste segregation scheme 3 nos. material recovery facilities and garbage transfer stations are being setup at Industrial Area, Phase-I, 3-BRD and Dadumajra, Chandigarh, so that the transport costs are reduced and the city is made bin free.

The other major projects coming up in the city are Smart Classrooms, Underground Utility Mapping, SCADA for recycled water and Monitoring of Individual Street Lights in Sector-17, 22, 35 and 43, Chandigarh.  The Advisor directed that Pet Bottle Crushing Machine should be setup at various locations including Bus Stands and Lake area where the foot fall is very high.  The CEO, CSCL apprised that the 20 Nos. Water ATM’s stations will be setup to provide clean, hygienic and cheap water to the residents and tourists and the project will setup on PPP Mode.

 The meeting ended with directions from the Advisor that all the departments should expedite the support required from them by Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. and further directed that Smart City works should not be delayed at any cost.

English Department organizes Orientation Programme

Chandigarh:

Students needs to practice kindness and gratitude through everyday acts’ said Sh. Manoj Parida, the Advisor to the Administrator, Chandigarh, while addressing the students of MA English and Cultural Studies during an orientation programme organized at the Department, here today.

He further added that patience in life always pays. He addressed the students with the variety of anecdotes on the importance of honesty, healthy living, responsibility, wisdom and positive attitude towards work. He also urged the students to study critically and wisely to succeed as an IAS officer.

Prof. Deepti Gupta, the Chairperson, expressed the importance of punctuality, receptiveness and regular attendance upon the enthusiastic audience while explaining that the objective of the event was to acquaint students with changes in the curriculum and working of the department.

Dr.Meenu Gupta, in-charge of Internal Quality Assurance Cell and placement activities, discussed recent activities of the department literary society and motivated students to participate in the many events happening all over the University.

Prof. Akshaya Kumar discussed the finer points of the new syllabus and inspired students to be inquisitive and curious.

Prof. Pushpinder Syal talked to the students about the need for continuous and attentive reading and writing as a prerequisite to attain excellence.

Dr. Surbhi Goel asked the students to be open-minded and expose themselves to interdisciplinary experiences.

Later, some Ph.D. research scholars also introduced themselves and discussed their teaching assignment with the audience.

The interactive session with the Chief Guest that followed was very well received by students, teachers and parents alike.

The induction session concluded with an uplifting speech by student seniors who highlighted the helpful and amiable nature of department teachers and administrators. They encouraged new students to not hesitate while asking them questions.

After the programme, the Advisor made a Courtesy call to the office of PU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raj Kumar.

Induction Course at PU

Chandigarh:

Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized an Induction course for the new students, taken admission in the M.A Course of Comparative Study of Religion. Professor Jaspal Kaur Kaang welcomed the new Students and congratulated the students of M.A 2nd and M.A 4th Semester who have achieved the first three top position in the University. She expressed that the Course which started in the year 2016 has entered into its 4th phase. Two batches have been completed and one is going on with its 3rd and 4th Semester. She expressed that this course has been framed in such a way that student can well understand the similarities and the diversities among all the major religions. The course aims to make the student sensitive to know the nature, scope and historical stages of the religions.

In the induction course Rajeev Kumar gave understanding to the students about the main religions of the world as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Jainsim, Budhism, and Sikhism along with the information of their history, metaphysics, mission and practices. Prof. Asha Maudgil Professor of Philosophy explained the definition of Philosophy and religion. She also described the Six Schools of Hindu Religious philosophy. Dr. Sudhir Kumar Baweja focused on the need of today is to build a good moral character. Professor Jaspal Kaur Kaang described the Sikh religion as youngest and modern. She explained the philosophy and the scientific approach of the Sikh Religion to the Students. She emphasized that in today’s world everyone is getting curious to know about other’s religions. She motivated the students to work hard with dedication.

Orientation Programme for the Ist Year students of B.A./B.Com.LL.B.(Hons.) 5 Years integrated course for the session
2019-20 was held here today at University Institute of Legal Studies(UILS), Panjab University(PU), Chandigarh.

   Justice S.S. Saron, Hon’ble retired Judge of Panjab and Haryana High Court encouraged the freshers.

     Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh blessed the students and urged them to fully utilise their stay in PU.

      Prof. Rattan Singh, Director, UILS informed the students about the department.

    Sh. Balbir Singh, Former District and Session Judge, Chandigarh and Prof. Sanjay Kaushik, Dean College Development Council were present during the Session II of the orientation.

Orientation Programme at PU

Chandigarh August 5, 2019


The Department of Community Education and Disability Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh began its first day Orientation programme by welcoming the new students of B.Ed. Special Education (Learning Disability) and M.A. Community Education and Development by the faculty, supporting staff and old students of the Department.

            Dr. Dazy Zarabi, Chairperson welcomed the students and urged the students to take responsibility for their learning.

  The ice-breaking session was conducted by Dr. Jyanti Dutta, Deputy Director, MHRD, Panjab University, Chandigarh in an interactive manner.

            Dr. Ashwani Sharma highlighted the history of Panjab University as well as background of the Department.

            Prof. Anuradha Sharma took a session on team building through various activities.           

 Dr. Saifur Rahman discussed in detail about the Department emphasising on role and membership of
alumni of Panjab University and of the Department.

   Mr. Nitin Raj spoke about the role of placement cell and the different positions available for the students who have completed their B.Ed. Special Education (LD) and M.A. Community Education and Development.

            The Second day will be field visit to GRRID, Sector-31, Chandigarh followed by a visit of University Library and Gandhi Bhawan.

            The Third day will have movie show on anti-ragging, presentations by the students followed by tree plantation in the Department in collaboration with Horticulture Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

A special interactive session of Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs) of Panjab University,

Chandigarh August 5, 2019

A special interactive session of Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs) of Panjab University, Chandigarh was held today with Sh. Ajay Gupta, Director (Research), ICSSR, New Delhi. He discussed and highlighted various schemes of ICSSR where several grants worth lacs are available to faculty members and research scholars of universities.

            A presentation given by Sh. Gupta revealed that the rejection rate of Post-Doctoral Fellowships, Doctoral Fellowships and other national Fellowships offered by ICSSR is very high because the emphasis is on approving high quality research work by the body.

            “Our aim is that more and more researchers and teaching faculty can make use of the grants and schemes offered by ICSSR. There are new schemes and projects that can be applied for and our website
is extremely friendly,” said Sh. Gupta.

      The Dean of University Instructions (DUI) and officiating Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean of Student Welfare (DSW) Prof Emanual Nahar were present at the occasion.

            “I am immensely happy to see that the PDF forum in PU is doing great work and organising constructive activities for welfare of all researchers,” said Prof. Emanuel.

       Seminar Convenor Dr. Pulakes Purkait, Department of Anthropology thanked the PDFs and University officials for supporting the activities of forum.

   Other Professors present at the seminar included Prof. Devinder Singh, Prof. Sanjay Kaushik, Prof. Sanjeev Sharma and Dr. Prabhdip Brar.

The session was attended by PDFs, PhDs and other students of PU campus and was organised by PDF Academic Forum and UIFT.
