PU organizes Open Mic on World Suicide Prevention Day

Chandigarh:

The Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh as part of the activities of Human Rights Volunteers’ Cell for Para Legal Services, organized World Suicide Prevention Day, here today in collaboration with State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh at Student’s Centre, Panjab University.


        As part of the event, the department organized open mic on suicide prevention on the theme “Umeed”. The event was organized to encourage students to share their thoughts and experiences on the issue through poetry, storytelling, music and rapping.


        Dr. Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties while introducing the theme stated that “Suicidal behaviour is universal, knows no boundaries so it affects everyone. Preventing suicide is often possible and each one is a key player in its prevention. Hence, we all have to come together to prevent suicide among youth.”
       

Dr. Arzoo, Assistant Professor, Psychology, GMCH-Sector 32 elaborated on how to overcome suicidal thoughts, laid emphasis on communicating with the family and friends about the problems one faces in day-to-day life.  She said that the best way to overcome any problem in life is to talk about it with your near and dear ones.

        Mr. Mahavir Singh, Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh, motivated and encouraged the students to involve themselves in various activities to avoid stress and anxiety which sometimes lead to suicidal thoughts.


        A leaflet on tips related to ‘Self-Care’ in situations of crisis prepared by Ms Surbhi alongwith other volunteers of the Human Rights Volunteers’ Cell for Para Legal Services was also circulated for wider dissemination among the youth. Dr Upneet Kaur Mangat, the Coordinator of the Cell stated that the objective was to generate awareness
on how everyone can make a contribution in preventing suicide.


        Jagminder, a Paracyclist shared his inspiring life story and motivated the students by stating that despite his handicap and various odds, he is successful in life today, as a cyclist and as an artist. He emphasized that we should always keep the hope alive


        The event was a success with the participation of students from various departments of Panjab University.16 students shared their thoughts: Ajay Choudhary, Rajni, Ashima, Kartik, Hiteshi Arora, Rupali Kamboj, Rakesh Kumar and Pardeep Kumari shared poetry on the theme of the event. Jagminder, Gurmohan, Bhavya, and Prakhar
shared their thoughts through stories. Bhavya, Jayantika and Neha sang songs to motivate the audience. Nand Kishore presented a rap and enthralled the audience with a self-composed song.

Eco – Friendly Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated in GH-8, PU

Chandigarh:

A six days long Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated in the Girls Hostel No. 8 of Panjab University by the residents and staff members of the Hostel.  Ganpati Sthapana took place on 2nd September, 2019 at 8:00 AM in the morning. Morning and evening aarti was done by the residents.  Prof. Neena Capalash, Dean Student Welfare (Women), Wardens of hostels, staff members and hostel residents actively participated in the event. The Ganpati Visarjan took place today after bhajans and aarti in the hostel premises. Students from other departments and other hostels also enthusiastically attend the event.  Keeping in mind the environment, eco – friendly idol of Ganesha made of mud,
after visarjan dissolved in water and Tulsi was planted in the pot.The event was organized to create a homely environment for the residents of the hostel and everybody participated with full zeal and enthusiasm.

Eye Donation Awareness Drive at UIAMS

Chandigarh:

University Institute of Applied Management Sciences(UIAMS), Panjab University, in association with NSS unit of Panjab University, under the guidance of program officers Dr.Manjushri Sharma, Dr.Anupreet Kaur Mavi, Dr.Ikreet Bal, and Dr. Vijayta Chadda, organized an Eye Donation Awareness campaign at UIAMS premises, as a part of National Eye donation fortnight being celebrated from 25th of August to 8th of September. This campaign aims to create mass public awareness about the importance of eye donation and to motivate people to pledge their eyes for donation after their demise. Professor Upasana Joshi Sethi, Director, UIAMS, welcomed the speakers and the guests for the session. Professor Navdeep Sharma, NSS coordinator, Panjab University, addressed the students and motivated the NSS volunteers and students of UIAMS to be a part of this noble drive.
       

The awareness session was held in collaboration with a team of doctors from Advanced Eye Care Centre, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. Dr.Gaurav Gupta, Cornea Specialist at PGIMER, gave a presentation on the facts and myths surrounding the concept of eye donation. He highlighted that India is having one
fourth of world’s blind population, with corneal blindness as one of the major reasons. Still, our country is at the bottom when it comes to availability of donor eyes. This calls for an urgent and intensive drive to spread the awareness about eye donation as one of the foremost humanitarian task for all individuals. He urged the student
volunteers to spread the information on contact numbers of Eye Bank PPGIMER Chandigarh so that the donor eyes can be transferred to the eye bank with in the stipulated time of 6 to 8 hours ( 7087008200/ 9855464464; 01722756368, EXT.-6111; for a radius of 50 to 60 Kms around Chandigarh) Dr.Atul Gautam, Manager, Eye Bank at PGIMER, informed the students about the standard operating procedure followed for the processes involved in
eye donation, right from filling a pledge card for donation to counseling of family members at the time of harvesting the donor eyes. Four faculty members and 15 students pledged their eyes for donation after the session.

Cleanliness Drive at PU

Chandigarh:

  Today, NSS volunteers of Department of Evening Studies – Multi Disciplinary Research Centre Panjab University Chandigarh performed their third activity i.e.cleanliness drive after the students election, under the guidance of Chairperson, Prof.Gurpal Sandhu NSS Director, Dr. Navdeep Sharma and NSS Programme officer Dr. Nirmal Singh. The area cleaned included the Department of Evening Studies, along with the parking area. The activity began at 8:30 a.m. and around 40 volunteers contributed to it, which included the students from B.A., B.Com. and M.A. courses. The volunteers showed their dedication by performing the activity in an efficient manner.

Last Date for admissions extended

Chandigarh: 

 Panjab University, Chandigarh has extended the last date of admission upto 11.09.2019 (with late fee) for admission to all courses in the Panjab University Teaching Departments / Regional Centres / all affiliated colleges. The Chairpersons /Directors / Coordinators are requested to explore the possibility of filling vacant seats in all courses for this session.

UT Adviser calls for Plastic Free Chandigarh

Chandigarh, September 9:- Sh. Manoj Kumar Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh today called a meeting regarding campaign against use of plastic items in Chandigarh. During the meeting Sh. Arun Kumar Gupta, IAS, Principal Secretary, Home, Sh. Ajoy Kumar Sinha, IAS, Finance Secretary, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, other senior officers of different departments of UT and officers of MCC were present.

The Adviser directed all the senior officers of different departments of UT to launch different campaigns to make Chandigarh free from plastic. He said that we must think of technologies to abolish plastic usage in the city and tell all the shopkeepers to sell jute and cloth bags only and citizens should adopt ways to reduce plastic usage.

 The Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh apprised about the awareness programme besides taking measures to reduce plastic from the city. He said that a mass awareness campaign against the use of plastic under the theme “Plastic Mukt Bharat” would be launched on 11th September, 2019. During the campaign different programmes would be conducted in three phases i.e. from 11th September to 1st October, 2019 awareness programmes; “Shramdaan” as mass movement on 2nd October in 2nd phase and Recycle/disposal of collected plastic waste, leading to a plastic free Diwali programmes from 3rd October to 27th October, 2019 in 3rd Phase.

The Commissioner said that the campaigns would be focused to ensure that all the coming festivals are zero-waste and plastic free events to make “Plastic Free City”. He said that each and every stakeholder of the city will be involved in this campaign. He said that seminars would be organized in schools, colleges and other educational institutions on plastic free Chandigarh. Volunteers of NSS, NCC, Scouts & Guide would be roped in this mass campaign.

He further elaborated that Govt. Hospitals, Private Hospitals would ensure the ban against usages of single use plastic in their institutions and encourage mobile food suppliers, eateries, restaurants to use alternate means instead of plastic. Similarly, sports department would create mass mobilization programme by involving sports persons and organize rallies throughout city.

The Commissioner said that Social Welfare Department will sensitize citizens through Aanganwari workers, self help groups against the usage of single use plastic items. Engineering department, Chandigarh will carry out mass plaguing programmes to clean three choes running through city i.e. Patiala Ki Rao, N-Choe and Sukhna Choe besides cleaning the traditional and artificial water bodies in the city.

He said that the Administration would encourage people for setting up of Bartan Bhandars, Jhola bhandars, which would be used during the “Langars”, public functions and festivals. The Commissioner said that the Director Food and Supplies, Chandigarh would encourage shopkeepers to display boards in their shops carrying slogan “we don’t use plastic bags” and Industries department would hold meetings with Fast moving consumer goods/manufacturers/users to discuss how they can contribute to the theme as part of their extended producer responsibilities mandate.

Similarly, the Chandigarh pollution control committee and department of environment & forests would felicitate NGOs/citizens etc. who have done exemplary work on the plastic ban theme.

The Commissioner said that the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh would conduct massive awareness programmes, activities in urban and rural areas besides encouraging citizens and organizations on replacing plastic bags by cloth bags. He said that MCC would identify locations for plastic waste collection and segregation; to plan transportation & logistic of plastic to collection hub; to integrate in formal rag pickers, junk dealers, recyclers into the formal waste management system; to set up adequate number of material recovery facilities to handle recyclable/processing of plastic waste and incentivize citizens to deposit plastic waste at ULB-authorized collection centres.

He said that mass level programmes would be conducted on 2nd October to take pledge for a plastic waste free city and organize “Shramdaan” for plastic waste collection in order to make Chandigarh plastic free. One day of every month will be earmarked as “Plastic Free day” in Chandigarh. He further said that complete ban on usage of any single use plastic items would be declared on 2nd October, 2019.

Dr. Paresh remembered at PU

Chandigarh September 9, 2019

        Hindi Vikas Parishad organized function in the memory of Dr. Paresh, a renowned poet, writer and an eminent Professor at the  Department of Hindi, Panjab University. He was an alumnus of this Department, a student and research scholar of Aacharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi. Dr. Paresh also held UGC Professor Emeritus fellowship.


        The function was presided over by Dr. Shankar ji Jha,  Dean of University Instruction, Prof. Bhupendra Brar,  Former Dean of University Instructions and Dr.Ramesh Kuntal Megh, an eminent Hindi writer.   


        Dr. Raj Kumar Malik conceptualised and coordinated the program.  The programme was started with the Saraswati Vandana by Harish Sharma, a well-known devotional singer. The select invited poets included Ratan Chand Ratnesh, Rajwanti Mann, Gurmit Bedi, Bhupendra Brar, Satyapal Sehgal, Prasoon Prasad , Aditya Niyogi, Vijaya Singh, 
Vijay Kapoor,  Babita Kapoor, Balvender Bhushan, Anita Surbhi,  Kumar Krishna, Daljit Kaur, Ritu Bhanot, Chander Trikha,  Vibha Upbheja Ray, Phool Chand Manav, Prem Vij,  Sushil Hasrat Narelvi, Vimal Kalia Vimal, Praveen Sudhakar, Jaipal Thakur,  Dr. Arvind Drivedi, Dr Naveen regaled the audience with their choicest poems. The kavi darbar was
attended by Faculty members from various disciples like English, Microbiology, Public administration, political science and persons from various walks of life.


        Dr Latika Sharma, Professor, Department of Education and daughter of Dr Paresh presented the vote of thanks.  Books by Prof Paresh were on display which the participants collected with literary enthusiasm.

MCC conducts mega rally against use of plastic at sector 26

Chandigarh, September 8:- Thousands of citizens, students of colleges and NGOs took part in the mega awareness rally organized by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh at grain market, Sector 26, here today to sensitize people against the use of one-time use plastic items.

During the programme, the Municipal Corporation has launched selfie competition to encourage citizens against the use of plastic in different categories. As per the competition general public can send/upload their selfies/pics to the MCC through social media tools i.e. facebook page; youtube channel; instagram and whatsup number upto 30th September, 2019 using cloth bags for their routine usage; shopkeepers giving cloth bags to the customers; NGOs/institutions distributing free cloth bags to the public etc. The MCC will give away prizes to the 10 winners selected randomly at the mega event scheduled to be organized on 2nd October, 2019.

Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Mayor and Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh flagged off the rally, which marched throughout the grain market and after that took round of the other city markets.

The Mayor and Commissioner distributed cloth bags to public along the way. They also told people, found using plastic bags, not use them and handed over a cloth bag. The different teams of MCC also distributed cloth bags alongwith NGOs and the Run Club, Chandigarh.

While addressing the gathering, the Mayor said that the ban cannot be successful without the cooperation of public and sought their help in this endeavor and said that the motive behind the rally to send the message among masses against the use of plastic and total plastic ban in Chandigarh.

The Commissioner said that it was aimed at encouraging stakeholders to avoid use of plastic covers and bags that cause irrevocable damage to the environment. On a mission to reduce use of non-biodegradable plastic to the extent possible in the city, the MCC will focus on creating full ban on single use plastic items and create mass awareness against the use of plastic in city. He said that the citizens should not to consider plastic bags as trendy and user-friendly but to go back to traditional cloth bags.

Earlier, the Mayor, Commissioner, officers & officials of MCC, representatives of NGOs, College Students, and stakeholders took an oath against use of plastic. A nukkar natak against the use of plastic was also performed by college students.

Waving different banners in their hands, the students of different colleges said “Save Earth and avoid polythene covers”, holding placards that carried a green message, and raising slogans all along, the IEC team, MCC “Plastic hatayen, Aao paryavaran bachayen”.

Sh. S.K. Jain, Additional Commissioner, Sh. Shailender Singh, S.E., Public Health, Dr. Amrit Pal Singh, Medical Officer of Health, other councilors and officers of MCC, representatives of RWAs were present during the programme.

भारती किसान संघ चंडीगढ़ ने आज झांसी शर्मा को अपना मीडिया इंचार्ज बनाया है। उनके साथ ही बलबीर पाल को चंडीगढ़ इकाई का महामंत्री नियुक्त किया है।इन नियुक्तियों की आज यंहा घोषणा करते हुए संघ के चंडीगढ़ के अध्यक्ष शिन्दपाल कम्बोज ने कहा कि हमारे संघ का मुख्य उद्देश्य किसानों की समस्या को सरकार तक भेजना और फिर उनको हल करवाना है।उन्होने कहा कि इसके अलावा हम केन्द्र सरकार की किसानों के लिए घोषित की गई योजनाओं को ठीक से किसानों तक पुहंचाया जा सके इसके भी पूरा ध्यान रखते हैं।उन्होंने कहा कि चंडीगढ़ में पंजाब, हरियाणा और खुद चंडीगड़ के ही 60 प्रतिशत किसान रहते हैं, इस लिए यंहा भी संघ का जमीनी स्तर पर गठन किया जाएगा।श्री कम्बोज ने आगे कहा कि जल्दी ही हम चंडीगढ़ में किसानों की समस्याओं को लेकर एक सेमिनार का आयोजन करेंगे।जिसमें किसानों के साथ साथ कृषि मंत्री को भी बुलाया जाएगा।

इस अवसर पर चंडीगढ़ में संघ के इंचार्ज हरजीत सिंह भुल्लर ने कहा कि केंद्र सरकार ने जो पंजाब में आई बाढ़ के लिए 1हजार करोड़ रुपये की जो पहली किस्त भेजी है, हुम् इस बात को यकीनी बनाये गे कि उसका एक एक पैसा पीड़ितों को मिले। उन्होंने कहा कि केंद्र और भी पैसा देगा। अपनी अपनी नियुक्ति के लिए कम्बोज और चंडीगढ़ के संघ इंचार्ज हरजीत सिंह भुल्लर का आभार प्रकट करते हुए झांसी शर्मा और बलबीर पाल ने उन्हें यह आश्वासन दिया कि वे अपने दी गई जिम्मेदारी को पूरी निष्ठा के साथ निभायँगे।

Lecture on Yoga at PU

Yoga through the lens of Western Medicine’, a lecture combining the discipline of yoga and medical science was presented by Dr Pashupati Steven Landau from the United States. Organised by Centre for Swami Vivekananda Studies & Department of Physical Education, Panjab University, Acharya Landau gave a comprehensive presentation on the subject. He began by introducing the audience to the Patanjali yoga system, and then described the
benefits of various types of yoga such as Karma yoga, Gyana yoga, Bhakti yoga, Hatha yoga, and Rajadhiraja yoga.

He stressed the importance of vegetarianism, saying it has positive effects on health, morality, ecology, and it has subtle effect on the mind. Regular practice of yoga not only improves health, it reduces chances of disease, and helps to get rid of depression, anxiety, and stress. After teaching yoga in prisons for over 25 years, he found that criminal tendency among inmates decreased.

There was also a detailed discourse on the chakras and how to awaken the kundalini. During the lecture, the Acharya also demonstrated several yogic asanas.There is an interesting story behind how he got hooked on to yoga. At the age of eleven or twelve, his mother gave him a book on yoga, and that book transformed his life forever. He learnt yoga from several masters. He has been practising and teaching yoga since 1971. He has trained people in India, Jamaica and the United States. He has been teaching for 25 years in prisons, hospitals, mental health centers, schools, health
food stores and yoga centers.

Along with him Acharya Shambhu Shivananda Avadhuta, a distinguished scholar and gold medalist alumnus of Panjab University shared his experiences with the audience.

The lecture was presided over by Prof Shankar Jha, D U I, Officiating Vice Chancellor,  PU and it was facilitated by Prof. Gurmeet Singh, Chair Maulana Abdul Kalam and Prof. Nandita Singh, Dean International Students.
