International Literacy Day celebrated at PU

Chandigarh September 6, 2019

Department of Life Long Learning and Extension in collaboration with University Institute of Fashion Technology organized the celebration of International Literacy Day, here today.  More than 35 students from various departments of University participated to mark the celebration. The main objective of the celebration was to connect the literacy with themes propagated by the Worthy Prime Minister of India, Mr. Modi, “Padega India to Badega India”.  In this context, Poster Making Competition and Awareness Lectures were held at the Department.


Prof. Sween from the Department highlighted literacy as an essential parameter to progress in ones’ career. Here she quoted the importance of Digital Literacy in the career of youth.  She emphasized that Digital Literacy Skill and Awareness can provide wings to their career by exploring information on the Net. She also briefed students
that Panjab University has an access to many of National and International Journals at PU Website which can connect them to explore vast knowledge and information. While speaking on the occasion, Dr. Prabha Vig stressed on Multi-linguism and Students.  She made students aware that in India there are 19,500 languages and out of them 22
were considered as official. She further enlightened that the current scenario of World demands to be Multi-linguistic because 4% of the World Population do not reside in their country of their birth. She further added that Panjab University provide education in multiple languages by offering degree, certificate and diploma courses in
English, Hindi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Urdu, French, German.

Dr. Parmjit Singh Kang, Chairperson, DLLL&E enlightened university students to act and work on a motto, “Live, Learn and Thrive.”  Here, he requested students to work voluntarily to spread the message of literacy and its benefits.  He emphasized that students must strengthen their quality of education by cultivating reading interest in them, so as to meet global level needs and requirements.


At the last, Poster Making Competition was held to explore the variation of literacy benefits. The best posters were awarded with; Ist Prize Ms. Harman from Department of Life Long Learning & Extension; 2nd & 3rd Prize to Ms. Mahima and Ms. Jasmeen, students from University Institute of Fashion Technology.

MCC warns encroachers at industrial area Ph-I

Chandigarh, September 6:- Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Mayor and Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, Sh. Shakti Parkash Devshali, area councilor and concerned officers of MCC inspected industrial area in regards to encroachments made by junk dealers, rehri pharis and others.

The inspection was planned after regular complaints of encroachments from the area. During the inspection, the Commissioner checked the vending licenses of different vendors and directed the enforcement inspector to remove the illegal encroachments as well as unauthorized vendors from the area immediately.

The team also inspected the area, where the junk dealers unauthorized encroached up on the govt. land and road sides. The Commissioner directed the enforcement wing to take immediate action and remove these encroachments from public land. The Mayor and Commissioner also visited public toilets over there in the area and directed the executive engineer, public health to get the repair work done immediately and proper disposal of water accumulated in the road sides by providing road gullies in the low line areas.

The team also inspected the sites, where rehris were serving food to the visitors and the Commissioner directed the sanitation inspectors to challan the violators for littering and check these in regard to health and hygiene.

MCC road committee meeting held

Chandigarh, September 6:- A meeting of Road committee, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Sat Parkash Aggarwal and attended by other members of the committee namely Sh. Gurpreet Singh Dhillon, Sh. Arun Sood, Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh Sidhu, Sh. Shakti Parkash Devshali, Sh. Bharat Kumar, Smt. Ravinder Kaur Gujral, Sh. Sanjay Arora, Superintending Engineer, B&R and concerned officers of B&R wing, MCC. Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Mayor of Chandigarh & Sh. Hardeep Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor have also attended the meeting as special invitee.

During the meeting detailed discussions were held regarding strengthening of works under the B&R wing, MCC. The members decided that the committee will visit ward wise to take stock of roads and other works falling under the MCC i.e. paver blocks and community centres etc.

The committee members asked the concerned officers to start patch work in the roads immediate after the monsoon season is over.

The members asked the officers to repair the footpaths wherever paver blocks have been broken. They asked to remove malba scattered throughout the road sides and open spaces immediately.

Applications for Admission to Certificate Course

   The Centre for Social Work, Panjab University Chandigarh is re-inviting offline applications for admission to Certificate Course in Social Work & Field Interventions for the session 2019-20 to fill up the vacant 8 seats of open category and 2 seats of In-service category. The Eligibility Conditions for Admission is:


        Any Graduation or Post Graduation with 50% marks (45% marks for SC/ST/BC/PwD). The interested candidates are advised to contact in the office of Centre for Social Work for admission form and other queries before 07.09.2019 upto 3.00 pm.

Workshop at PU

Chandigarh:

University School of Open Learning (USOL) gave a befitting tribute to Dr. Radhakrishnan and also celebrate the spirit of Teacher’s Day by organizing a Capacity Building Workshop for its faculty members and students. More than 40 Faculty members, Research Scholars and students participated in a very innovate Capacity Building Workshop on
Abode for E-Content Development. The workshop aimed to train participants to add value to the  study material through Abode.


Prof. Madhurima Verma, Chairperson in her welcome address, highlighted the need of making the study material more engaging and effective by integrating befitting visuals, infographics. Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Panjab University, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He expressed that teachers’ striving for self enrichment is a real tribute to the great teacher.


Prof. Sukhwinder, Director APJ Abdul Kalam Computer Centre in his key note address gave a very involving comprehensive overview of Moocs. He enriched the participant by giving them a live experience of a tutorial/video of a Mooc Course.


 Dr. Neeraj K. Singh, Deputy Librarian,  P.U. later in the first technical session, shared his experience with SWYAM the platform provided by Government of India which aims to revolutionize the Education System of India..

Later in the afternoon sessions, Prof. Ravi K. Mahajan, Mr. Jeesu Jaskanwar Singh, Mr. Sudhir Baweja, Dr. Bhupinder Singh  shared  their insights on various aspects of Abode Application Software. In the last session participants carried out practical exercises.

Teachers’ Day celebrated at PU

Chandigarh:

Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh organized a programme on Teachers’ Day to commemorate the birthday of a great Teacher, Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, here today. Professor Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU while congratulating the big day in teacher’s life, urged all to keep themselves abreast with latest developments. Teacher in any role of researcher/teaching/administrative can leave their signature with determination and dedication and inculcate qualities in their students to make them into responsible citizens. It is also a day of self analysis and stop-taking of this noble profession.

        He added that the present day need is of dedicated teacher who work consciously and contribute their mite for the inclusive development of the society by imparting proper education to the students. He urged all to re-dedicate to the teaching profession and reiterate the commitment to the cause of teaching and research.
       

Professor Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instructions enlightened the gathering with the ancient Gurukul-Guru Shishya Parampara to be rationally implemented in the modern era.
       

Professor R.K. Singla, Dean Research in his address while expressing his gratitude to all the teachers, said that teachers are like light houses spreading knowledge to students.


        Earlier, on the occasion, Professor Bhupinder Singh Bhoop (UIPS) Coordinator, UGC Centre for Excellence in Nano Biomedical Application, while welcoming the guests, accentuated on the role of an ideal University teacher.
     

  On the occasion, Professor Manju Malhotra, Department of History, was felicitated by Professor Raj Kumar for her achievements during her long stint in Panjab University.
       

Besides Professor Bhoop, the entire event was coordinated by Professor Prashant Kumar Gautam Director, University Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management, and Dr Manjushri Sharma of UIAMS.

MCC launches Water Conservation Competition for Citizens

Chandigarh, September 5:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) & Chandigarh Smart City Limited (CSCL) in collaboration with Smart City Mission has launched ‘Jal Sanrakshan Hackathon’, a city-wide competition to encourage school and college students, and local citizens of all age groups to participate in the conservation of water in the City Beautiful Chandigarh.

Launched on the eve of Teachers’ Day by the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, this competition has been designed to solicit the active interest and participation of citizens in rainwater harvesting or reuse of treated water. Using this platform, the Municipal Corporation would like to acknowledge and appreciate the initiatives undertaken by citizens themselves to conserve their water security.

While elaborating this scheme, the Commissioner said that this interactive Jal Sanrakshan campaign has been designed in three distinct categories – one for school students, a second for college students, and a third category which is open to contestants of all age groups. The competition will be in the form of online and hard copy poster submissions. Three winners will be selected from each category, with an exciting prize award of Rs. 25,000, Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 for the top three entries respectively. The most innovative solutions will be implemented by the Municipal Corporation with the help of the contest winners as well.

For more details and to participate, citizens are encouraged to visit the MCC website (mcchandigarh.gov.in), and click on the link to enter their submission. The last date for submission is 27th September, while the results will be declared on 2nd October.

76 challaned during MCC anti encroachment drive

Chandigarh, September-5: – The enforcement wing of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today conducted anti encroachment drive in Mani Majra and Industrial Area Ph-I, Chandigarh. The enforcement team removed encroachments   and during the drive 76 challans issued to the violators.

In addition to that the sanitation wing of MCC has carried out anti plastic drive in Patel market, Sec 15 and seized 10 Kg plastic bags from Car, which were stored to distribute among shopkeeper by the whole seller.  The team issued challan to the violator having fine of Rs. 5000/-.
