IGNOU - 33rd Convocation Held on 17th February, 2020.

The 33rd Convocation of IGNOU was held today on 17th February, 2020 (Monday) at IGNOU, Hqrs., New Delhi and its 39 Regional Centres simultaneously. Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, was the Chief Guest for the convocation function and delivered the convocation address at IGNOU Headquarters, New Delhi and the Convocation of IGNOU, Regional Centre, Chandigarh and Regional Centre, Khanna was held at the auditorium of Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector – 36B, Chandigarh. Shri Chanranjit Singh Channi, Hon’ble Minister, Technical Education & Industrial Training, Govt. of Punjab, presided over the function and delivered the convocation address at RC Chandigarh and awarded Degrees/Diplomas to 351 students of Master Degrees and Professional Bachelor Degrees. In the convocation 5627 successful learners were awarded Degrees & Diplomas. In the previous convocation 1767 students were awarded degree. The significant increase in the awardees reflects the quality of support services provided to our learners by the Learners Support Centres.

Ms. Arti Verma student of Bachelor of Education (B.Ed, Ms. Divya Garg student of Post Graduate Diploma in Criminal Justice (PGDCJ), Ms. Shivani Sharma Student of Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Technology (PGDET) from Chandigarh Regional Centre and Mr. Amardeep Singh student of Diploma in Tourism Study (DTS) from Khanna Regional Centre were awarded gold medal in the function held at IGNOU, Hqrs., New Delhi.

Dr. Anil K. Dimri, Regional Director presented the annual report of the Regional Centre. In his report he mentioned that with a network of 30 Study Centres, Chandigarh Region of IGNOU, admits more than 18000 students per year and during the academic session 2019-20 the total student strength was 17790 registering an increase of 30.62 per cent over the last year.  He also shared that 62 students from this region have received their Degree with distinction and 1600 learners with 1st Division. Dr. Dimri, highlighted the activities of the Centre and advised the students to take advantages of Open & Distance Learning based education, as this is cost effective and accessible to the common people. He also emphasized that IGNOU, Regional Centre Chandigarh is making sincere efforts to procure land for Regional Centre building for construction of its campus. 

With a view to promote Open and Distance Learning education Regional Centre, Chandigarh was established in the year 2009 covering  Panchkula, Mohali, Ambala, Patiala, Ropar, Fatehgarh Sahib and UT Chandigarh district. At inception of Regional Centre, Chandigarh there were only 05 Learner Support Centres which are presently 30 almost covering all the districts under this region and has witnessed  10 times growth in enrolment during last 11 years.

Dr. Santosh Kumari, Regional Director, IGNOU, Regional Centre, Khanna has also presented report and achievements of Regional Centre, Khanna on this occasion. She highlighted the importance of distance education and various activities of Regional Centre Khanna. She emphasized that Regional Centre, Khanna is play important role in imparting traing to the School level volunteer as more than 16000. Such volunteer are enrolled with DECE Programme of IGNOU from the State of Punjab.

Out of 5627 awardees, 1523 were from Master, 2166 from different Bachelor, 64 from Diploma and 789 from PG Diploma.

Chief Guest Shri Chanranjit Singh Channi, Hon’ble Minister, Technical Education & Industrial Training, Govt. of Punjab, awarded the Degrees and Diplomas to 351 successful learners of IGNOU. In his convocation address, he emphasized the role of Open & Distance Learning system in the present context and shared that our youths should come forward to take the advantage of the system. Mr. Singh highlighted that the greatest hallmarks of IGNOU which is lacking in Conventional University system is the considerable degree of  flexibility in entry qualification, place, pace, lateral entry and exit points and duration of  study. He also pointed out that conventional education system miserably fall short in meeting this ever increasing demand of higher education because of the inherent limitations of restricted intake. What is the way forward? Open Distance Learning (ODL) is the answer. The potential of this mode of education was realized long ago and a separate Department of Distance Education as part of the conventional university system became a reality. The country realized the need and potential of the distance learning as a viable, sustainable and cost-effective recipe to cope with the mounting pressure of higher education. He also advised the learners not to violate the basic matrix of morality, values of honour, dignity, friendship, social well-being and compassion towards fellow men. No idea or prescription can be above the conscience of humankind, prime mission of the learner is to serve your family, your fellow men, the society and the country as a whole. One could be a good professional only if one is good human being.

The Principal, Dr. Agneesh Dhillon, Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector – 36B, Chandigarh has also spoke on the occasion, who received the award of best IGNOU, Programme Study Centre in Chandigarh region.

The Principal’s of different Degree Colleges of Chandigarh, Coordinators of IGNOU, Study Centre Staff, Academic Counsellors, and other Guests were present on this occasion. The programme was also attended by Dr. Savita Panwar, Asstt. Regional Director & Dr. Nurul Hasan, Asstt. Regional Director and other staff of the Regional Centre. The programme was conducted by Dr. Savita Panwar, Asstt. Regional Director and vote of thanks was offered by Dr. Nurul Hasan, Asstt. Regional Director.

उर्दू के महान शायर मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब की 150 वीं पुण्यतिथि पर आज हरियाणा उर्दू अकादमी की ओर से राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर एक संगोष्ठी का आयोजन किया गया, जिसे आज के महान शायर एवं विचारक डाॅ.शीन काफ़ निज़ाम, उत्तरप्रदेश उर्दू अकादमी के पूर्व अध्यक्ष जनाब नवाज़ देवबंदी, प्रख्यात नाटककार

डाॅ. आत्मजीत, पूर्व आई.ए.एस. जनाब आर.के.तनेजा, कद्दावर शायर श्री महेन्द्र प्रताप चांद, डाॅ. के.के.ऋषि, केन्द्रीय साहित्य अकादमी के राष्ट्रीय उपाध्यक्ष श्री माधव कौशिक ने सम्बोधित किया।


संगोष्ठी की अध्यक्षता हरियाणा के डी.जी.पी. एवं चर्चित लेखक डाॅ. के.पी.सिंह ने की और विशिष्ट अतिथि के रूप में डाॅ. सोनिया खुल्लर ने शिरकत की।
इस अवसर पर अकादमी की ओर से प्रकाशित पुस्तिका मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब और हरियाणा के महान शायर स्वर्गीय सुरेन्द्र पंडित सोज़ के काव्य संकल्प ‘ज़ख्म कोई हो’ का लोकार्पण किया गया।


जनाब शीन काफ़ निज़ाम ने अपने विद्वता पूर्ण शोध पत्र में ग़ालिब को महान कालजयी शायर बताते हुए अपने समय का महान सृजनकर्ता बताया। इस अवसर पर मौजूद अन्य चर्चित शायरों एवं लेखकों में विचारक एवं सूफ़ी विद्वान प्रो. हरबंस सिंह चर्चित कवयित्रि सुमेधा कटारिया, अंगेज़ी पत्रकार अजय भारद्वाज, इतिहासकार एम.एल.जुनेजा, शायर शम्स तबरेज़ी आदि शामिल थे।

One Day Seminar/Workshop on Climate Emergency: No Time Left; Act Now

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Punjab Pollution Control Board (Government of Punjab), Patiala organized one day National Seminar/Workshop on the theme, “CLIMATE EMERGENGY: NO TIME LEFT; ACT NOW” on 15 February, 2020 in the University Campus.

The Chief Guest, Honourable Justice A. K. Goel Chairman, National Green Tribunal, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India, Former Chief Justice of Odisha High Court and Former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court drew the attention of the audience towards the depleting water sources and the fatal diseases being caused by chemical emissions and
Green House gases. He urged everyone to enlighten and empower oneself to face the challenge of water, air and soil pollution.

Shri R.N. Jindal , Executive Director, Nimbua Green Field Punjab Ltd. in his keynote address delved on the strict compliance of law and policies to mitigate the environment crises caused due to pollution which is endangering our lives.

Prof. S. S. Marwaha, Chairman, Punjab Pollution Control Board, emphasised on the scientific analysis to be followed towards the exaggerated views regarding the pollution fear and on creating awareness for resolving the environment crisis.

Prof Raj Kumar, the Vice Chancellor in his welcome address apprised the guests about the various innovative projects begun by University for improving the research and teaching skills. He appreciated the mix of resource persons invited for seminar from different domain of knowledge to deliberate on the concern of the environment.

Hon’ble Mr Justice Jasbir Singh,the Former Acting Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court,  while expounding the theme of the seminar made a call to face a challenge of unhealthy environment through sensitization programmes and cumulative responsibility.

According to the Coordinator of Dr B. R. Ambedkar Centre Professor Devinder Singh, a series of activities were organized to mark the seminar/workshop. This includes the Paper Presentations, the Quiz, on the spot painting competition, waste to wealth competition and the slogan writing competition. The seminar/workshop was open for researchers, students and teaching faculty of the University Departments, Institutes, Centres as well as the colleges affiliated to the University. The participants were encouraged to register their concern for environment protection in their own way by choosing at
their will the above-listed activities. The participants won a number of prizes for themselves while taking part in various competitions. They were also given certificates, seminar kits and refreshments. The participants of Departments/ Institutes / Centres of the University, such as Laws, History, Geography, UIET, UILS, ISSER, Centre of Human
Rights, Political Science, Public Administration as well as colleges such as Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46, DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh had shown an earnest interest and keenness for participation.

The eminent dignatories present on the occasion included Sh. Alok Shekhar Srivastava, Secretary GAD and Coordination, Punjab, Sh. Subodh Aggarwal, Former Chief Secretary, Punjab, Sh. R. N. Jindal, was also the keynote speaker, Smt. Urvashi Gulati, Former Chief Secretary, Haryana, Er. Krunesh Garg, the Chief Environmental Engineer, Punjab Pollution Control Board, Head Office, Patiala, Prof. Ganga Ram Chaudhary, Director, CIL.

Five parallel technical sessions wer arranged for the activity of paper presentations in which 95 participants took part and 85 papers were presented broadly on themes, Global Warming, Sustainable Development, Green Energy, Waste Management, Depletion of Ozone, Natural Justice, Polluter Pays Principle, Noise Pollution, Afforestation etc. The paper presenters were adjudged by 14 chairpersons of various faculties of Humanities and Sciences who chaired various technical sessions.

52 participants took part in slogan writing competition. 12 teams of 36 participants from various departments of the University and the colleges competed in quiz competition. 12 participants took part in Waste to Wealth competition. 35 entries of participants were received for  on the spot painting and poster competition.

The Valedictory Session was ordained by a number of prominent personalities, including Sh. Subhodh Aggarwal, Smt. Urvashi Gulati, Prof. S. S. Marwaha, Mr. Paramjit .Here prize distribution ceremony was also held for the prize winners.  The Seminar/ Workshop  fulfilled its purpose to sensitize one and all about environment protection, to act instantaneously for its cause and to keep alive the cause with continued deliberations and activities conducted through the said seminar/workshop.

IGNOU extends Admission up to 28th February, 2020

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date of submission of online fresh admission of all Masters, Bachelor, Diplomas & Certificates programmes up to 28th February, 2020 for the January, 2020 session. Details of the IGNOU academic programmes for the January, 2020 session can be accessed from the link https://ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in/. The prospective learners can apply for Masters/Bachelor/Diploma/Certificate programmes of the University on the official website, informed The Regional Director of IGNOU Regional centre Chandigarh Dr. A.K.Dimri. Last date of submission of ‘online’ admission form for January, session was earlier fixed for 15th February. 

For all those candidates, who have been planning to get admission in any of the IGNOU courses can apply for the same online. Firstly the candidate has to register themselves (if not registered) on the official website i.e  https://ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in/index.php/registration/user/register. Whereas those who have already registered can simply login with the id- password and fill up the application form for the admission in the January session at Indira Gandhi National Open University for 2020. Also, before filling up the IGNOU admission form, candidates must go through the general instructions, eligibility criteria, fee details, duration, etc . on the official website. Applicants can also download the complete details of the programmes from the IGNOU website or may contact at Regional Centre office at SCO-208, Sector-14, Panchkula.

Chandigarh, February 14:- A meeting of village development committee for the village Daria was held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Jagtar Singh Jagga, Deputy Mayor and attended by Sh. Hardeep Singh, Sh. Anil Dubey as special invitee along with the members of village committee and concerned officers of MCC.

During the meeting, the committee members addressed problems raised including recarpeting the phirni road, damaged roads, Storm water drainage system, repair the street lights, change the water supply & sewerage lines, provision of Community Centre in the village, construction of new toilets near market.

INDIA REMAINS THE TOP SOURCE COUNTRY FOR CANADA PERMANENT RESIDENCE

Canada continued its immigration record of admitting over 300,000 immigrants for the second consecutive year by welcoming a total of 341,180 new permanent residents in 2019.

Out of the total number of newcomers, 58 per cent (196,675) came through the economic class while 27 per cent (91,335) were welcomed under family sponsorship and the remaining 15 per cent were arrived through the refugee class.

Indians remained the largest group when considering new permanent residents to Canada by nationality. A total of 85,585 Indians obtained Canadian permanent residence in 2019, which accounted for 25 per cent of all newcomers to Canada. China was the second leading source country as a total of 30,260 Chinese nationals were granted Canadian PR  followed by the Philippines (27,815) , Nigeria (12,595)  and the United States (10,800).

Among all other Canadian provinces and territories, Ontario dominated as the province of choice for new Canadian permanent residents in 2019. The province welcomed 45 per cent of the national share in 2019. In a distant second place was British Columbia, welcoming 50,320 newcomers in 2019. The third place was secured by Alberta, which welcomed 43,685 new immigrants in 2019.

The federal government also exceeded the target it set in its 2019-2021 Immigration Levels Plan as the country is targeting an additional 341,000 newcomer arrivals in 2020.

During the awareness drive various activities were organized including magic show, citizen engagement games. The publicity material for Citizen Speak (Citizen Feedback) was also displayed during the awareness drive.

Mayor visits Kishangarh village

Mayor visits Kishangarh village

Chandigarh, February 13:- Smt. Raj Bala Malik, Mayor, Chandigarh today visited village Kishangarh to see the basic amenities in the area. She was accompanied by the Chairperson of village development committee Smt. Kamla Sharma, Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Jagtar Singh Jagga, Deputy Mayor, Sh. S.K. Jain, Additional Commissioner, Sh. Shailender Singh, Chief Engineer, other members of village development committee and local residents.

During the visit, the team visited various streets, phirni road, markets and residential areas of the village. The main problems discussed throughout the visit were including the sewerage system, broken roads, Lack of sanitation, Tube wells, Electricity supply etc.

The committee also pointed out that there is requirement of strengthening of storm water supply pipe lines and the water supply pipe lines to the households also needs to be strengthened.

The committee decided that these problems need to be tackled and solved one by one, starting from the sewerage and drainage problems. After that, the focus would be shifted to the repairing of the roads and then the expanding of the storm water pipes. The citizens of Kishangarh also made requests to the committee for pruning of the trees and removal of abandoned cars by encroachment which would be catered to right away.

The Mayor instructed the concerned officers of engineering wing to prepare budget estimates at the earliest and put up for its disposal from the village development funds. She also directed the sanitation wing to keep proper cleanliness in the area.
