PU Plans to Plant 40,000 saplings this Season

Girls  Hostel no 1 and 2 ,Panjab University Chandigarh organised a plantation drive  to celebrate the month of Sawan .

The saplings were planted by the DSW(W) Prof Sukhbir Kaur, Chairperson Dept of Geography Prof Simrit Kahlon, Chairperson IETVE, Dr Kanwalpreet Kaur, Wardens Dr Kamla and Dr Anju Goyal and the staff of the Hostels. Speaking on the occasion the DSW(W)  said that the season of rains in Panjab University was this year being celebrated as a time to make the campus more green. The University planned to plant a total of 40,000 saplings during this season.

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT&VD), Panjab University, Chandigarh, conducted a Webinar on Fashion Styling (My Journey and Business of Fashion Styling) on Friday 31st July, 2020.

Chairperson of UIFT&VD, Dr. Prabhdip Brar, gave an introductory note, welcoming the speaker, Mr. Rahul Vijay, a fashion design graduate who started his career at Harper’s Bazaar India. He rose from a fashion intern to a fashion editor and moved to Mumbai. He joined ELLE India and later GQ India and is responsible for styling covers and fashion editorials, with an 8 years’ experience in women’s wear styling. He is one of the creative directors for Lakme Fashion Week and has styled for leading designers such as Rajesh Pratap Singh, AM:PM, Ashish Soni and Kunal Rawal among others.

The speaker narrated his journey starting from writing articles for his college magazine in 2007 to reaching Harper’s Bazaar in 2011. It stated that the role of a stylist is to give trends to designers, help them edit a collection and to create a language to sell his/her product. Apart from garments the other necessities for styling include footwear, wearer trials and photography. For a magazine, any cover star is selected on the basis of an upcoming movie release, on newsworthy content associated with them or according to the mood board. The takeaway of the session was that “Styling is 99% research and 1% creativity.” The talk converged at a statement that “To succeed as a stylist, one needs the right team and the right attitude.” This session would definitely strike the right chord in the students of fashion technology who wish to pursue styling as a career.  

 It was attended by more than 90 participants including faculty members, research scholars and students of Fashion Technology.

Mayor & Commissioner starts tree plantation on V3 road

Chandigarh registers for the India Cycles4Change Challenge

Chandigarh, July 30:- Chandigarh is one of the 95 cities to have registered for the India Cycles4Change Challenge, an initiative of Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. The India programme of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) is the knowledge partner of the Smart Cities Mission in conducting this challenge and guiding cities through it.

While sharing information regarding the challenge, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner Municipal Corporation Chandigarh-cum-CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. said here today that through this challenge, the registered cities will implement quick interventions to create a safe and cycling-friendly city. To ensure this transformation, Chandigarh is committed to working with its citizens as it develops and implements the proposals. Community engagement is a key component of the initiative, and with the support of citizens this programme will be a success. The City Beautiful, Chandigarh envision citizens to participate in its effort to achieve zero-carbon mobility.

The Commissioner said that the motto of the programme is ‘Pedal your Bicycles and ride towards your good health.’ He said that the India Cycles4Change Challenge was announced recently, by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), MoHUA at the 5th Anniversary Celebrations of the Smart Cities Mission.

He said that it aims to inspire and support the cities to implement quick cycling-friendly initiatives in response to COVID-19. The Challenge will run in two stages. Stage 1 will run until October, where cities will pilot initiatives such as pop-up cycle lanes, host public consultations, conduct surveys and hold campaigns to promote cycling, which will help develop a scale-up strategy. Based on the pilots and the city-wide proposals submitted, 11 cities will be shortlisted in October for stage 2. In this stage, they will be awarded Rs. 1 Crore and will be guided by national and international exports to scale-up the initiatives. This stage will extend till May 2021.

During the course of the Challenge, cities will be guided through online workshops, technical knowledge material and peer-to-peer learning discussions with fellow cities. This will help cities to strategize and implement pilots, while also developing their scale-up proposal.

He said that “The COVID-19 pandemic is an opportunity for cities to reinvent themselves. Cycling offers us a healthy, affordable and COVID-safe solution for a green recovery. Through this challenge, cities will have to create a shared vision with their citizens. Every citizen should come together to ignite a cycling transformation in Chandigarh.”

He said that interested citizens can volunteer/Mobilize volunteers for the initiatives, spread the word through social networks and may sponsor or bring in sponsors.

The Commissioner said thatChandigarh has already attended workshop 1 of the Challenge that focused on the technical, community engagement and communications components of cycling initiatives. Now the city has rolled out a survey to understand citizens’ perception of cycling. The survey aims to identify the barriers to cycling in Chandigarh and inform the design process. The city urges all the consultants, corporates or concerned citizens to support the city in Cycles4Change Challenge by filling in survey form using the link https://forms.gle/6L4hDySrzHEz7btH9.

MCC Panel meets over generation of revenue

Chandigarh, July 29:- A meeting of committee constituted by Smt. Raj Bala Malik, Mayor, Chandigarh to enhance revenue sources of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held here today in the conference room of MCC, which was attended by member councilors namely Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh Siddhu, Sh. Davesh Moudgil, Sh. Anil Kumar Garg, Additional Commissioner, Sh. Sorabh Arora, Joint Commissioner, and other senior officers of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

During the meeting the financial status and sources to enhance the income of Municipal Corporation and following issues were discussed in detail:

·          Possibilities be explored to allow petrol limit instead providing separate vehicles to the officers excluding senior officers in the Corporation to avoid expenditure of maintenance and services etc.

·         Detail of vacant properties in the rural area & urban area maintained with estate branch and building branch be prepared and tabled in the next meeting.

·          Proposal be prepared to allow advertisement in all the vehicles of Municipal Corporation to generate revenue.

·         Proposal be prepared to collect charges for garbage collection in 13 villages and commercial shops.

·         Permission be given to Dhabas and eating joints to allow table and chairs outside and corners besides their premises for the lunch and dinner on rent bases.

Kargil Vijay Diwas at UIET

The Cultural Committee of University Institute of Engg & Technology,Panjab University along with the Alumni Affairs Cell organized an event on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas to pay homage to the martyrs of the 1999 Kargil War. The event was organized on Google Meet and was hosted Live on You tube with all the participants and attendees at their home.

The event started with the opening note from Prof. Raj Kumar, the Vice Chancellor of Panjab University and Prof. Savita Gupta, Director of University Institute of Engineering and Technology. They emphasized on the importance of the day and appreciated the students for such an initiative. The Chief Guest for the event was an alumnus of UIET, Lt. Commander Anirudh Bhardwaj. He shared his own experience and gave  an important message to live in and enjoy the present moment.

It was followed by  the cultural events which kicked off with a patriotic poetry by Dhriti narrating a message from a soldier to his mother who has sacrificed his life for the motherland. Following it was a song by Devansh Soni and a story by Srijan Tiwari. After that the students narrated the last letters of the Kargil Heroes that they sent to their family creating  an emotional atmosphere. Adding to it, Shubhra Mittal, narrated an account of a Fauji daughter and how an early meeting with her Dad became the last for her.

Prateek Sharma narrated a poem in Veer Ras giving an account of a mother’s anger who lost her son in the war. Adding to it were songs by Himanshu Rana Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna and Zindagi Maut Na Ban Jaye fueling the enthusiasm to new heights. Poetry by Bhupesh Yadav made us all look into our lives and introspect to make lives worth protecting. Shubham Gupta gave an account of a son who lost his father in the war but is still brave enough to join the army afterwards. Then the Coordinator of the Cultural Committee and the Coordinator of the Alumni Affairs Cell of UIET expressed their thoughts and encouraged the students to take such steps more often. The event was concluded by a classical dance by Srija Nandi on Vande Mataram instilling the feeling of patriotism in us more firmly.

Fire & Rescue services committee meeting held

Chandigarh, July 28:- A meeting of Fire and rescue services committee, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Gurpreet Singh Dhillon and attended by other members of committee namely Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Sh. Rajesh Gupta, Sh. Devinder Singh Babla, Sh. Charanjiv Singh and Maj. Gen. Kandal attended the meeting virtually, Sh. Anil Kumar Garg, Additional Commissioner-cum-Chief Fire Officer and concerned officers of MCC were also present during the meeting.

·        The committee discussed the developmental projects for which the MCC got dedicated funds including roads, strengthening of sewerage system, water supply and strengthening of water storage tanks at water works sector 39. The members asked the concerned officers to speed up the projects.

·        The members also asked the concerned engineers to remove horticulture waste after tree pruning and grass cutting etc., malba after cleaning road gullies and debris near the road berms be lifted immediately.

·        The committee members also asked the horticulture engineers to remove grass from the footpaths in the parks and green belts for the convenience of morning and evening walkers.

·        The committee asked the engineers to speed up the fixing of electricity polls and provision of lights, where dark spots were identified.

·        The committee accorded approval to revised rough cost estimate for providing and fixing shed for wood piles and shed at No.5 cremation site for making weather proof arrangement at cremation ground sector 25, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 48.03 lacs.

·        The committee also approved the recommendations regarding revision of rent and extension in tenure of shops of villages including Maloya, Palsora and Kajheri.

MCC extends last date for depositing property tax upto 31st July

Chandigarh, July 27:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has extended the last date for depositing the property tax by cheque/DD upto 31st July, 2020.
