Panjab University in its Syndicate meeting, here today, deliberated on all the
issues. At the outset, the Syndicate unanimously conveyed their appreciation for the
commendable performance of the students of Sports Department of PU and its affiliated
Colleges for bringing laurels by winning the First Khelo India University Games 2020
under the able leadership of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Dr. Parminder Singh,
Director, Department of Sports, Dr. Rakesh Malik, Deputy Director and all coaches. It
was also resolved to extend all possible support to the sports persons.


        The Syndicate applauded Sh. Ashok Goyal, PU Fellow for donating blood more than
100 times at Rotary and Blood Bank Society Resource Center, Sector-37, Chandigarh. He
was recently honoured as a Star Donor for donating 4 times in a year


        The Syndicate approved the recommendation of nomination of 2 Eminent Jurists
namely Justice Jasbir Singh and Justice B.S. Walia on the Research Degree Committee in
Law for 2 Years w.e.f. 1.1.2020.


        The Syndicate authorised the Vice Chancellor to nominate 2 senior most
Associate Professors and 2 senior most Assistant Professor on the Academic Council for
the term 1.2.2020 to 31.1.2022.


        The Syndicate approved the increase of a unit in BA LLB(Hons.) at Panjab
University Regional Centre, Ludhiana from the Session 2020-21. However, starting LLM,
BA LLB(Hons.) in Panjab University Swami Sarvanand Giri Regional Centre (PUSSGRC),
Hoshiarpur was kept pending for re-examining.


        The Syndicate approved the revision of treatment charges of various types of
treatment being provided at Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences &
Hospital.


        The Syndicate approved the amendment in existing policy for grant of Basic
Pay+DA+GP to extend the benefit of 9 Library Assistants working on fixed emoluments on
contract basis.         


        The Syndicate approved the minutes of the committee to look into the leave
cases of teaching staff.


        The Syndicate also approved the minutes to examine the cases for appointment on
Compassionate Ground.

Lecture on Choosing Health and Happiness at PU

Department of Philosophy, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a lecture on “Choosing Health and Happiness” by Dr.(Maj.) Neelu Panag Khanna, a practicising Counsellor at Panchkula, here today.


The Chairperson, Dr. Shivani Sharma, introduced the speaker and highlighted her achievements as a marathon runner and as a counselor. 


Dr. Panag shared her experiences and journey of life leaving the audience motivated enough.  She explained that human must not only learn but also unlearn what is unnecessary for a smooth functioning of life. She referred to the theory of ‘Coding’ while explaining the difference between ‘reaction’ and ‘response.’  The faculty members and students of the department interacted with the speaker by asking questions and sought clarifications on the problematic of life.

Prof. Raj Kumar,  Vice-Chancellor Panjab University laid down the Foundation Stone of Extension building of  University Institute of Legal Studies(UILS) in the presence of Prof. Rattan Singh, Director, UILS, Prof. Rajinder Kaur along with other faculty members of UILS.  Prof. Raj Kumar congratulated the faculty members and students. While interacting with the students, he motivated them and wished them all success.  The Vice-Chancellor also appreciated the efforts and hard work of the faculty members and in making UILS as one of the most reputed and prominent department of the Panjab
University.

at DES-MDRC Auditorium, Arts Block-I, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The Bharat-Bodh
Vyakhyan will be presided over by Professor Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU.

Professor Ashok Modak, National Research Professor and Vhancellor, GGD
Central University, Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh) will deliver the vyakhyan on ” Remembering
Lokamanya Tilak Today: Some Reflections”.

Professor Shankarjijha, Dean, University Instruction will be the Guest of Honour on

Panjab University Alumni Association, under the stewardship of Prof. Deepti Gupta,
Dean, Alumni, in order to commemorate the occasion of International Women’s Day
organized a Mahilla Kavi Sammelan, here today. The event saw the likes of Ana Dehalvi,
Namita Rakesh, Sarita Jain, Sunita Raina, Saba Aziz, Anita Anand, Babita Kapoor, Isha
Naaz, and Mamta Kalra. The event was hosted by Mr Shams Tabrezi, the Master of
Ceremonies and saw an enthusiastic attendance from the shayari savants.
Also in attendance were Jagmohan Singh Kang, politician and member of the Indian
National Congress. Mamta Kalra enthralled the audience with her renditions on Lord
Krishna and dohas invoking the earthiness of the farmer community and their affection
with Mother Nature. This was followed by Babita Kapoor, a theatre thespian who
mesmerized the audience with her somber nazms on solitude and remembrance to women’s
fortitude and treachery of men towards them. Anita Anand charmed the audience with her
ghazals on daughter’s well- being and happiness to the quintessential heart break to
the frolic of Holi. With her roots in Kashmir, Sunita Raina with her poetic renditions
ranged from invoking God to materialism corroding relationship to lovers courtship and
infidility. Saba Aziz from Delhi enthralled the audience with nazms attributing women’s
feebleness to a fresh blossomed rose in Garden of God to women’s potency to God’s
resilience itself. Isha Naaz with her poetic eloquence mesmerized the audience with her
poetic compositions alluding to Razia Sultan and Jhansi ki Rani with the war cry to
women of “hum to kamzoor na samjhe duniyawale”. Sarita Jain celebrated womanhood with
her nazms of women riding the wind and touching the zenith of heaven. The audience was
enthralled and mesmerised by Ana Dehalvi with elegant and powerful verses like Phoolon
ko Kanto Par Chalna Padta Hai, Ishq na Karna Aag Mein Jalna Padta Hai and Namita Rakesh
on her shayari on women’s love and strength to sustain it.
The Ladies Rotary Inner Wheel representatives Miss Rekha and Dr. Indu Luthra gave out
tokens of appreciation to Prof. Deepti Gupta and the poetesses honoring their art and
their dedication to it.


The audience reluctantly bid adieu to the mehfil made poignant by the stalwarts of Urdu
shayari.

In this pursuit, Panjab University organized a Power Walk in collaboration with National Commission for Women

In this pursuit, Panjab University organized a Power Walk in collaboration with
National Commission for Women (N.C.W.) on Sunday evening which commenced from Neerja
Bhanot Girls Hostel No. 10, Sector 25 to Student Centre, P.U., Sector 14  with the
objectives to advocate Women’s Right to safe access to Public Spaces as an
unconditional/fundamental right and to break gender stereotyped notions of safe and
unsafe, to make public spaces as safe places, to alter society’s attitudes and
perceptions towards women in public spaces and to make public spaces Inclusive for all,
irrespective of Gender and age or disability.

The power walk saw huge participation of girl students. The students were motivated by
teachers of various faculties and Wardens of various Girls Hostels to participate pro-
actively in the said walk. The students were sensitized about gender sensitization and
safe spaces by the speeches and slogans of faculty of Women’s Studies Department.
During the two hours walk, the female students actively participated and raised slogans
like, “Each for Equality”, “Nari Shakti Zindabad”, “Women’s Rights are Human Rights”,
“Zero Tolerance of Violence against Women”, “Zero Tolerance against Domestic Violence”,
“I’m Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”. The students also sang songs for
Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality.  The two hour walk culminated at Student
Centre with the formation of a huge Human chain.


Dr. Rajesh Kumar Chander, Chairperson, Department-cum-Centre for Women’s Studies and
Development proposed a Formal Vote of Thanks to all the gathered participants; Prof.
Neena Capalsh, Dean Student Welfare(Women), Fellows, Wardens of all Girls Hostels,
Chairpersons/Teachers, girl students and the supporting staff, Security Personnel, and
children of all the genders  for providing the necessary support and co-operation for
organizing the said event effectively.


There is an alarming rise in trend of incidence of violence against women in the
society in recent times. Therefore, to tackle the problem effectively and efficiently,
there is an urgent need to promote the idea of Women’s Safety by ensuring Safe access
to public spaces.

Workshop for Library Professionals at PU

The Department of Library and Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh
organized one day workshop for library professionals on “Implementation challenges of
RFID Technology and KOHA ILMS”, here today. In the inaugural session Dr. K.P. Singh,
DLIS, University of Delhi, highlighted the role of Information & Communication
Technology(ICT) in general and RFID Technology specifically. Dr. Singh also stressed
upon addressing the compatibility issues of RFID with Integrated Library Management
System [ILMS]. He illustrated the origin and evolution of Open Source Software (OSS),
“KOHA”. Lastly, Dr Singh explained the role of “Human” aspect in managing innovative
technologies that are emerging in the current era.


The Presidential address was delivered by Professor Ronki Ram, Dean, Faculty of Arts,
Panjab University. Prof. Ronki Ram apart from deliberating upon the role of ICT in
empowering libraries, shared his experience of using libraries abroad which are highly
technology driven. He emphasized on the role of library professional competencies for
utilizing the cutting-edge technologies for meeting the users’ expectations.
Both, the keynote address and the presidential address were highly enriching,
informative and were highly appreciated by the delegates of the workshop.
Earlier, Prof. Preeti Mahajan, Chairperson DLIS, PU welcomed the dignitaries and shared
the vision and mission of the department and also introduced the theme of the workshop.
More than 110 delegates participated in the workshop. The delegates came from northern
regions including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Madhya Pradesh.
