56th Panjab University Colloquium

56th Panjab University Colloquium cum 4th Shenmar Memorial Oration is being organized by Panjab University(PU), Chandigarh on May 21, 2019 at 9.30 am at Golden Jubilee Hall, PU. 

 Sh Parameswaran Iyer, Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India will deliver the lecture on mplementation of Large Scale Social Transformation Programmes: Lessons from the Swachh Bharat Mission. He is leading the flagship Swachh Bharat Mission and the National Rural Drinking Water Programme of Govt. of India. A 1981 batch IAS officer joined the World Bank in 2009. Prior to his 
current appointment, Mr. Iyer was serving as Manager for Water in the World Bank based in Washington DC and he has been working on water supply and sanitation issues since June 2012. He has over 20 years of experience in the water supply and sanitation sector.  

 Sh. Iyar will deliberate on Swachh Bharat Mission. The Swachh Bharat Mission has revolutionized sanitation in India; India has brought over 50 crore people out of open defecation and halved the global open defecation burden, in just five years. The story of India going from a sanitation coverage of 39% to 99% in five years is unparalleled. India has harnessed the power of its people to bring about a fundamental shift in their collective conscience and change a centuries-old habit, in half a decade. The talk will highlight key points of how Swachh Bharat Mission transcended from a government programme to mass movement, a Jan Andolan. 

The Swachh Bharat journey has laid down a blueprint for future government supported and people led transformations. 

 Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU will be the chief guest, whereas, Prof. 
T.R. Sharma, Executive Director, NABI, Mohali is guest of honour. Prof. Girish Sahani, Former Secretary, DSIR and DG-CSIR will be presiding over the function.

Workshop by Public Administration, PU

Department of Public Administration, Panjab  University, Chandigarh under the UK-India Research Council’s project “Transforming India’s Green Revolution through Research and Empowerment for  Sustainable Food Supplies (TIGR2ESS) organized a workshop titled “Food Grains and Health” by Professor Richa Puri, Department of Botany, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Dr Poonam  Khanna, Assistant Professor of Nutrition in School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh.

 Professor Ramanjit Kaur Johal, Co-Principal Investigator and Chairperson, 
Department of Public Administration, Panjab University introduced the TIGR2ESS project and opined that the project aims to define the requirements and set the policy agenda for a ‘second Green Revolution’ in India focussing  on skill development, health and well being, framed by demographic changes affecting rural communities and feminisation 
of smallholder farming systems. The project will develop and strengthen alliances across a carefully selected network of UK and Indian experts, build  long-term research capacity and partnerships for sustainable agriculture that will set India on the path to a second Green Revolution. The project is being led by University of Cambridge in which around 20 collaborating institutions from UK and India.

 Professor Richa Puri delivered an introductory lecture on “Minor cereals of the World, India and Punjab”. Professor Puri stated that out of the estimated 75,000 species of edible plants, only about 150 have been used and of these only about 30 species provide 90% of the world’s food. She further deliberated on the history of cereals. Professor Puri discussed at length different forms of cereals and millets of the world, India and Punjab and also carried out a comparison of millets with wheat on the basis of their nutrient content. She concluded that though the governments have 
been initiating policies and programmes to promote cultivation of millets against the dominating cropping pattern of wheat and rice but still the success of these initiatives is far from satisfactory.

The workshop was attended by faculty and researchers from Department of Public Administration, interns from PGIMER and delegates from Mehr Baba Charitable Trust, Fatehgarh Sahib. Both the sessions were highly interactive and were appreciated for giving a strong understanding and awareness about food grains and nutrition.

Curtain Raiser Seven Days’ Workshop on Qualitative Research Methods in Social Sciences

 The Centre for Leadership & Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab University Chandigarh under the aegis of (Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching) PMMMNMTT, MHRD, Govt of India is organizing 7 days’ national workshop from May 20-26, 2019 on Qualitative Research Methods in Social Sciences with the theme Equity and Social Justice at ICSSR Hall, Panjab University. The keynote speaker will be Prof. Padma M. Sarangapani from Tata 
Institute of Social Science, Mumbai and the inaugural session will be chaired by Prof. Krishna Kumar, Padma Shri and former Director NCERT, New Delhi. Prof. Devinder Singh, Secretary to Vice Chancellor, P.U. Chandigarh will be the Chief Guest for the inaugural session on May 20, 2019.  The workshop will bring together the educationists, academicians and researchers from eminent institutions across the length and breadth of the country. The highlight of the workshop is to draw upon the traditions of qualitative research methods catering to the purpose of equity and social justice. The objective is to equip the researchers in developing a deep 
understanding about the epistemological and methodological framework of qualitative research designs along with providing participants a holistic perspective about current social issues.

PU undergraduate student appointed as Visiting Fellow

Chandigarh May 17, 2019 

 Rasmeet Singh, 2nd year student of B.E (Chemical) at Dr. S. S. Bhatnagar 
University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology Panjab University, Chandigarh (SSBUICET) has been appointed as a visiting fellow in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, Sydney, Australia for the period of two months to participate in an Australian research project w.e.f 2nd June, 2019. Its first such case of UICET.

  Rasmeet is pursuing his research work along with his bachelor’s degree under the supervision of Dr. Sanjeev Gautam, Asst. Prof., Advanced Functional Materials Lab, Dr. SSBUICET, Panjab University.  Generally, under graduate students in UICET starts working on some research projects, if they are interested for higher studies after their bachelor’s degree. 

He has been appointed to conduct research on “Designing and Development of pretreatment Filtration System for Water and Wastewater” at University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, Australia.

Dr. Sanjeev Gautam has started a hydrogen based fuel cell and hydrogen storage research along with other energy harvesting resources like photovoltaics, perovskite solar cells and thermoelectric. Mr. Rasmeet is currently working on the development of hybrid graphene compounds for hydrogen storage properties and wastewater purification.

Change in timing of PU Dental College

 The working hours of Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of  Dental Sciences and Hospital, Panjab University Chandigarh w.e.f. 16th May 2019 to 15th July 2019 shall be from 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. (Monday to Saturday) without any  lunch break. The registration of the patients will be done from 8.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m.

Centre for Social Work organized Capacity Building Tour for the student of Ladakh Nubra Valley ( Ladakh) at Panjab University Chandigarh Campus.

The Teachers and students of Ladakh were accompanied by Capt. Amrinder Singh of 22 Medium Regiment. This Capacity Building Tour was for the exposure to  teachers and students about various educational Institute and heritage sites in India under Sadbhavna. Chairperson Centre for Social Work, Dr. Monica Munjial Singh said that student have visited various departments in University Camps such as Fine Art Gallery, Museum of Gandhian Bhavan, Centre for Social Work and Sports Ground Etc. Students of Social work also aware them about the opportunities of education and the importance of Education in Life so that they can also go for higher education. Dr. Gaurav Gaur Assistant Prof. appraised the said Interactive capacity building tour and Mr. Prashant Sharma Field Supervisor coordinate the Tour.

World Orthodontic Health Day (WOHD) Celebrations at Panjab University Dental Institute.

Chandigarh May 15, 2019

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics of Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital organized Creative Writing Competition’ to mark the occasion of World Orthodontic Health Day (WOHD) on 15th may.  Every year  15th may is celebrated  as WOHD to marks the signing of the World Federation of Orthodontist’s  (WFO) charter in 1995 during the 4th International Orthodontic Congress® in San Francisco. World Orthodontic Health Day is designed to tie the WFO’s past and future together.

The following were the result of the competition:

        The winner and consolation prize winner of the Creative Writing Competition will now be provided free of Cost (No Hospital charges) and immediate orthodontic treatment respectively. The consolation prize winners will be provided immediate orthodontic treatment. It is pertinent to mention that for orthodontic treatment there is a long waiting list and the above prize winner will be immediately taken for treatment without waiting.  The department of orthodontics has last year also conducted the Painting competition to mark the occasion of World Orthodontic Health 
Day (WOHD).  The department plan to conduct this kind of competition every year on 15th May so as to make people aware about orthodontic Health.
