Chandigarh conducted a one day seminar to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Urdu novelist

The Panjab University Alumni Association(PUAA)  in
collaboration with the Department of Urdu, Panjab University,
Chandigarh conducted a one day seminar to commemorate the 100th birth
anniversary of Urdu novelist, poet, biographer and PU Alumni, Padam
Shree Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir (7 April 1919 – 31 August 2016), here
today.

The seminar took place at Golden Jubilee Hall of PU. The
inaugural session started with Shams Tabrezi, Nazim of mushairas,
highlighting the importance and aim of the seminar.

With his immaculate Urdu he dazzled the audience and called
upon Prof. Kamlesh Mohan, to kick start the seminar by introducing the
life and achievements of Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir. It was followed by
Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, PU, addressing the audience and then
Prof. Abul Kalam Qasmi, the chief guest of programme. In Prof. Shamsur
Rahman [UTF-8?]Faruqi’s absence, Dr Ali Abbas read his key note, with this the inaugural session came to an end.

Before the second session commenced a spellbinding musical
performance by Vinod Sehgal and Mahendra Pratap Singh zapped the
audience and left everyone speechless and refreshed. The second
session had some well recognised personalities of Urdu Adab delivering
lectures, Tasnima and Dr. Chander Tarikha. Post lunch a  [UTF-8?]‘guftagoo’
session between Prof. Zaman Azurdah and Ms. Nirupma Dutt had everyone
zapped.

The seminar ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof.
Deepti Gupta, Dean, Alumni Relations.

This seminar felt like spring. It was after what seemed like
eons that Department of Urdu stole the spotlight all thanks to the
teamwork of Professors of Urdu Department, Dr. Ali Abbas and Dr.
Zareen Fatima, who developed this idea to raise awareness about Urdu
literature on the occasion of 100th Birth Anniversary of Padam Shree
Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir.

National Seminar on Guru Nanak Dev Ji at USOL, PU

Chandigarh April 16, 2019

Commemorating the 550th year of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Birthday, University 
School of Open Learning(USOL), Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized a one day National Seminar on “Guru Nanak and Our Times” here today.  

Dr. Surjit Patar, an eminent Punjabi Poet and Chairman, Punjab Arts Council, Chandigarh, in his address underscored the expansion and shaping of consciousness as the key task of religion which may culminate in the creative and transformatory actions of the people.  Dr. Patar focussed on the various dimensions of Nanak’s thinking as Poetry, philosophy, cosmology, ecology music, humanism and other social concerns.  Dr. Patar also regaled the audience with his melodious rendition of self-composed gazals.  

Prof. Sudhir Kumar, Department of Evening Studies, Panjab University, located Guru Nanak Ji in the knowledge–Bhakti tradition of Kabir, Tulsi, Mira, Ravidas and talked about the seminal aspects of Nanak’s teachings that influenced the lives and thinking of the millions of people.  Prof. Kumar described Nanak Ji primarily as Sadhak (practioner) and not an intellectual/ideologue.  

Prof. Bhupinder Singh Brar, former Dean of University Instructions, Panjab 
University, Chandigarh, shared his understanding and relevance of Guru Nanak Ji from the perspective of a social Scientist.  Prof. Brar described Nanak Ji as a beautiful blend of the secular and spiritual ethos.  Prof. Brar also emphasized the relevance of Nanak’s teachings in today’s times which stands marked by religious fetishization and communal disharmony.  

Prof. Yojna Rawat, Chairperson, USOL, welcomed the dignitaries and introduced the audience with the themes of the Seminar. She informed that the deliberations in the seminar stressed on the teachings of Nanak Ji including inter-faith dialogue, truthfulness, purity of thought and mind, soulfulness equality, simplicity and contentment.  

n the technical sessions, as many as 35 speakers shared their views on the 
different dimensions of Nanak’s teachings and visions. 

Earlier, the programme commenced with the singing of Shabad by Dr. Rinku Kalia, a faculty from S.D. College, Sector 32.

Prof. Gurpal Sandhu, Dean Languages and Chairman, Department of Evening Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, gave the valedictory address.  Dean University Instruction Prof. Shankar Ji Jha also graced the occasion.

UILS, PU ORGANISES INTRA-DEPARTMENT “SPELLING BEE” AND “JUST-2-MINUTE” COMPETITION 2019

 The Literary Society of University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab 
University, Chandigarh, under the able guidance of Dr. Sasha and Dr. Chanchal Narang organised Intra-Department “Spelling Bee” and “Just-2-Minutes” Competition under Avant Garde on 15th April, 2019.

While the “Spelling Bee” Competition aimed to enhance the vocabulary of 
students, thereby fostering comprehensive learning marked by proper pronunciation of the words, the “Just-2-minutes” Competition was an all round-fun event aimed at mastering the control of the mind over the mouth. The competition saw the earnest participation of students from all semesters. The medium of speech for the competition was English.

The “Spelling Bee” competition witnessed the participation of 20 students and was conducted in two phases viz. preliminary rounds and final rounds. On the other hand, the “Just-2-minutes” competition had 15 participants who were given approximatey an hour to prepare after the draw of lots.

Imaan Singh Khara was adjudged the winner in the “Just-2-minutes” competition, with Jaideep Singh Lalli and Surner Singh bagging the 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In the “Spelling Bee” Competition, Tejsavi was declared the winner, while Shtantika was awarded the trophy for the 2nd position and Bhumija for the third.

he competition was judged by Dr. Harneet Kaur Sandhu (Associate Professor, PGDE, GGSCW, Chandigarh). Calling it an illuminating experience, Dr Harneet Kaur congratulated the students as well as the society for making it a successful event. 

The event culminated with Dr Chanchal Narang congratulating all the winners, participants as well as the volunteers for their cooperation and support. She also encouraged the students to look forward to more such opportunities in the future.It being the last event of the present semester, overall the event turned out to be a great learning experience for all the participants as well as the volunteers.

MAP Quiz at PU

Chandigarh April 15, 2019

Centre for Advanced Study(UGC), Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Indian National Cartographic Association (INCA) Chandigarh Chapter organized the first ever Map Quiz for Post Graduate Students of Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh, here today. 

The objective of this Map Quiz was to popularize the awareness and application of topographical maps, satellite imageries, GIS and GPS. Indian National Cartographic Association Hyderabad is sponsoring this event and Survey of India Chandigarh is providing all logistic support. 

110 students of Geography, Remote Sensing and Disaster Management participated in this event. While every participant will receive participation certificates, the winners will be awarded by INCA in their International Conference.

FDP commenced at UIAMS, PU

University Institute of Applied Management Science(UIAMS), Panjab University, Chandigarh is organising Faculty Development Programme from 15-21 April, 2019 which commenced here today with the inaugural session focussed on various econometric tools widely used for research purposes.

Prof B. S. Ghuman, Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala emphasised 
upon the need to select the appropriate research technique for the interpretation of the results. He specified various steps to be followed by a researcher for good research work. 

 Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instruction, Panjab University, 
Chandigarh stressed upon the necessity of conducting contemporary research work to resolve the practical issues in an ethical manner. 

Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Panjab University, Chandigarh highlighted 
the need of identifying and defining the research problem in an appropriate manner. He stressed upon interpreting the results in a correct manner.

Earlier, Prof Upasna Joshi, Director, UIAMS in her welcome address motivated the participants to do quality research. 

 Around 30 researchers of varied discipline from various organisations 
participated in the programme. 

The programme will have eminent experts from various parts of India as well as abroad to share their research experience and will also handle the practical problems faced by the researchers.

Panjab University campus Girls’ Hostel No 6 gets Sanitary vending machine, Incinerators and Dustbins under CSR

Mother Teresa Hall (Girls Hostel No. 6), Panjab University, Chandigarh received 1 sanitary vending machine, 7 incinerators and 54 dustbins for the segregation of waste, from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited under their Corporate Social Responsibility.

Professor Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University in a meeting with the officials of the HPCL Mr Gagandeep Singh Sodhi and Ms Mehak Uppal alongwith the Warden of Girls Hostel No. 6, Dr Namita Gupta, in his office  deliberated upon that how HPCL can contribute to fund other projects in the University. It was followed by a meeting of HPCL officials with the DSWs and Wardens in the Girls Hostel No. 6.

Professor Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare and Prof. Neena Capalash, DSW (Women) applauded the initiative taken by Dr Namita Gupta. It was also decided that the HPCL will be requested to replicate the project in other girls’ hostels of both the campuses as well.
