Webinar organized by Department of History of eminent academician, Prof. (Dr.) Heeraman Tiwari

Chandigarh July 9, 2020

Webinar organized by Department of History of eminent academician, Prof. (Dr.) Heeraman Tiwari

The Department of History, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a Webinar and Lecture with eminent academician, historian and linguist expert, Dr. Heeraman Tiwari on 08 July, 2020 on the theme  ‘Language of History and Language in History: An Intellectual Tradition of Ancient India’.

The Chief patron of the lecture, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Raj Kumar conveyed his overwhelming appreciation of the consistent efforts of the Department of History in perpetuating academic efforts even in the times of the Corona Pandemic by inviting such eminent academicians and thinkers to address the students, research scholars and faculty members.

https://propertyliquid.com/

Professor S. K. Tomar, the Dean Students’ Welfare and Honorary Director of Human Resource Development Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh in his welcome address highlighted how every successive step in the domain of knowledge makes him feel more humbled and eager to learn more. Dr. Anju Suri, Professor and Chairperson of the Department of History, Director of the event, apprised the almost 90 strong audience comprising faculty members from PU and other universities, students and researchers about the Speaker and the theme.

Professor Heeraman Tiwari who is a Professor in Centre for Historical Studies School of Social Sciences, JNU, New Delhi, has pursued his higher studies from Oxford University and is an established author of several books and research articles on various aspects of language, history and academia. Prof. Tiwari began by delving on the importance and vitality of using the right language and descriptive words in history so as to convey the intended meaning explicitly and with minimal chance of misinterpretation.

Prof. Tiwari expounded on how Patanjali in the ancient Sanskrit treatises has demonstrated the correct usage of language to explain and deduce meanings. The speaker highlighted the tradition of knowledge gaining and writing in ancient India which aimed to understand and contextualize the past. Language was praised because it was the only vehicle which could transmit the records of the past to the present. However, there was strict adherence to its adoption. Patanjali elaborated how one needed to understand meaning, context and channel of communication before going into the study of grammar. To Panini, anyone who is recording the past must have no self-interest to serve. Indian intellect considered knowledge a humbling experience.

Quoting examples from Sanskrit texts, he spoke about how language ought to be used, which words to use and which to avoid. The aim of language is to convey and protect culture and also contextualize knowledge. The greatest seeking starts while taking mundane subjects in the beginning and delves into the highest complexities of knowledge in the forms of questions and answers. The best example is the Bhagwat Gita in which the conversation between Arjun and Krishna is relatable even today. Arjuna, a warrior prince accepted his inability to unravel the greatest mysteries and decided to approach Lord Krishna as a layman even amidst a battle zone. The speaker stressed on the importance and role of the memory which is like a fish hook having direct connection with the present. According to him, time is relevant to look into Indic traditions of knowledge seeking and history writing which were earlier dismissed as children stories and abstract philosophies.

Professor Renu Thakur, Coordinator, Interdisciplinary Centre for Swami Vivekananda Studies and a Senior Professor in her summary comments congratulated the speaker on an excellent lecture and invited him to conduct a webinar again.

Dr. Priyatosh Sharma, the Associate Professor, Department of History and the convenor of the Webinar conducted Question and Answer Session and Dr. Ashish Kumar of the Department and the co-convenor, made preparations for the event. Dr. Jasbir Singh of the Department, delivered the vote of thanks.  The lecture was joined by experts from academic, scientists, researchers, students and faculty members from various diverse Departments and universities across India.

SPECIAL ONLINE LECTURE ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AT PU

The Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies in collaboration with the Department of Public Administration organized a webinar on the topic “Covid-19 Towards a Sustainable Lifestyle” of Prof. Suresh Mishra, Professor of Public Administration & Chair Professor & Coordinator Centre for Consumer Studies and Project Director, National Consumer Helpline (NCH) & State Consumer Helpline Knowledge Resource Management Portal  (SCHKRMP), Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi, today via WebEx.

Dr. Manish Sharma, Chairperson, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies introduced the topic and speaker and other invited guests, faculty members and students.

Prof. Mishra started his presentation by stating that COVID-19 is the greatest humanitarian challenge to the world since World War II and it has been observed that this disease is created and spread by the rich but the poor are the most affected one. And it has also changed the Attitude and behavior towards the purchasing and consumption pattern of the masses throughout the world. Greed has replaced need. He discussed how COVID-19 pandemic is a trigger for taking serious action and making policies towards sustainable development which is a combination of both sustainable lifestyle and sustainable consumerism. He said that the initiative for this must start with the students who can draw an action plan for sustainable development and who can spread the message of sustainability. Besides the mantra for this lies in 5Rs – Refuse, Reuse, reduce, Recycle and Rethink. He suggested an action plan for sustainable living with a focus on changing attitudes, saving water, fuel, electrical energy, food and use of chemicals. He concluded by saying that now is the time to reverse the adverse effects of consumerism and that Gandhi is more relevant today than it was in the past as Gandhi has very rightly said that “The World has enough for everyone’s needs but not for everyone’s greed.” And Sustainable Development has to be with Sustainable Production and Sustainable Consumption.

about the achievements of the center as a platform for   convergence of
diverse ideas which cut across different cultures, disciplines and
highlighted the universal thought.
Dr. Monika Agarwal, Associate Professor, UIAMS conducted the
proceedings of the webinar and highlighted the importance of such
efforts of the center.

https://propertyliquid.com/

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raj Kumar inaugurated the webinar and thew light
on the importance of Panchkaram. He welcomed the speaker and stressed
that we should eat balanced diet to keep ourselves healthy.
Dr.Jagjit Singh an eminent speaker stressed that weak immunity is the
cause of falling victim to viruses such as Covid-19.  Ayurveda is highly
effective in fighting such virus attacks. In the past three or four
months we have been talking of fighting Corona virus. All discussions
are not only centered around physical health, but mental health also. If
the mind is ill, physical health will be of no use. Until the mind is
healthy and cheerful, the body can never be fit. Most medical systems
these days only treat the body, no one treats mind. Remember, it is the
person you are treating, not the physical body alone.  Ayurveda is one
such system, that treats the person, both body and mind.Modern lifestyle
is so hectic and competitive that stress level has increased
tremendously. Even young children experience extreme stress these days.
This stress has a devastating effect on the mind and body, and it
weakens immune system. Ayurveda helps us to keep the mind happy through
simple exercisesand reduces stress thus makes our immune system strong
so that it can fight all sorts of bacteriaand viruses. Simple remedies
such as taking a spoon of badam rogan with warm milk before going to bed
can result in sound sleep with which our concentration level increases
tremendously. Right diet according to season and at right time help us
to remain healthy. Our health suffers if the balance between vata, pitta,
and kapha gets disturbed. Ayurveda is  a science which cures, it does
not only manages disease symptoms. Ayurveda can increase our immunity
using simple things found in our kitchens such as turmeric, muletthi,
cumin, fenugreek, and carom seeds. These items if taken in right
quantity and in right season are most useful for us. The participants
interacted with the learned speaker and cleared many doubts regarding
COVID -19 and maintaining good health. Dr. Monika Agarwal proposed the
vote of thanks.
