Commissioner orders to cancel MoU of 11 neighborhood parks allotted for maintenance to AMRUT RWA Sector 22 & RWA Sector 37-D

Chandigarh, September 23:- Acting tough on the poor maintenance of neighborhood parks of sector 22, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today ordered to cancel the MoU for maintenance of 11 neighborhood parks including 6 parks of sector 22, maintained by AMRUT Resident Welfare Association, Chandigarh and 5 parks of sector 37, maintained by Resident Welfare Association, Sector 37-D, Chandigarh.

Following the directions of the Commissioner, the concerned Executive Engineers of Horticulture wing inspected the maintenance of the parks performance of the RWAs, which were found unsatisfactory as per the terms and conditions of the MoU.

The Commissioner further orders the Superintending Engineer, Horticulture, MCC to submit maintenance report of all neighborhood parks for which MoU have been signed for maintenance by RWAs alongwith pictorial evidences and maintenance records.

The Horticulture Wing, MCC has started the inspection of all the neighborhood parks and putting up the cases to the Commissioner about the maintenance of parks and performance of the RWAs. The non-performing RWAs which are not maintaining roundabouts as per the norms will now be facing immediate cancellation.

Earlier, the Commissioner ordered to cancel the MoU of roundabouts maintenance with 5 firms/PSUs for poor performance and proper upkeep.

MCC organizes first of its kind mega health checkup camp for women safaikarmacharis as part of ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’

Chandigarh, September 22:- More than 500 Women Safaikarmcharis and group D women employees of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh benefitted from a mega health check up camp organized for them at Rani Laxmi Bai Mahila Bhawan, Sector 38, here today where the women sanitation workers underwent various health checkups and got testing done.
The camp was organized as part of the 15 day long campaign of “Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ in association with Chandigarh Welfare Trust and Tera hi Tera Mission hospital. It was formally declared open by Smt. Sarbjit Kaur Dhillon, Mayor, Chandigarh in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC, and office bearers of the associated organizations.
While addressing the women safaikarmacharis, the Mayor said that the sanitation workers are key for the health of the city. She asked them to use all the protective gear while working in the field. She said workers and their family members who consult doctors at the camp would be provided free tests and medicines, for which necessary directions have been issued to the concerned officials.
She said that the focus of the camp was to simultaneously disseminate message on promotion of healthy life style as there are common preventable risk factors for diabetes, hypertension, cardio vascular diseases and breast cancer etc. She said that steps were being taken by the MCC to organize such health camps on regular intervals during which besides screening, special focus was laid on creating awareness among the employees about health education, hygiene and precautions during rendering their duty.
The health camp was attended by more than 500 women sanitation workers and group D employees of MCC, who were screened for various ailments and were provided with free medicines by a team of specialist doctors including Physicians, Gynaecologists, Orthopedic Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, ENT specialists besides general checkup of blood pressure, diabetes, Mammography and skin checkup etc. In addition to that nearly 100 women safaikarmacharis were vaccinated with booster dose of COVID-19 during the health camp.

MCC organizes Poster Making/ Drawing Competition at School level under Swachh Bharat Mission

Chandigarh, September 21:- In order to involve school students in Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), Department of School Education in collaboration with Municipal Corporation Chandigarh organized a Poster Making/ Drawing Competition today under Swachh Survekshan 2023. Swachh Sarvekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in cities and towns across India. The competition was organized at school level as another major step towards making Swachhta, responsibility of students as well.

The objective behind the competition was generating students’ involvement in Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and related issues like Waste Segregation at source level, Safe Disposal of Sanitary Waste, Home Composting, 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), Say No to Plastic, Impact of Swachh Bharat Mission on Citizen’s Life and different categories of wastes.

Chandigarh, September 21:- With a first of its kind initiative, 75 Schools organized “Plastic Mukt Chandigarh” activity today under the ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ campaign.

The students collected waste plastic items/products from their houses and deposited them with the school authorities, which further handed over the collected plastic waste to the Municipal Corporation authorities for scientific disposal of the same. The students also pledged to adopt plastic-free practices in their households and school premises.

While sharing about this initiative, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh said that to completely ban single-use plastic products, the students of 75 upper primary government as well as private schools at Chandigarh took out this activity aiming mass awareness to educate people about hazardous effects of plastic products.

She said that as almost every household in the city has at least one school going student and the message of avoiding plastic products will reach everyone to make Chandigarh free from pollution of single use plastic.

The Commissioner said that schools are directly associated with parents, students and indirectly with the community. Thus, the onus was on the school to lead from the forefront in achieving the target to sustainable development goals. All stakeholders, including students, parents, staff members, their friends and relatives, visitors to the school campus, have been involved in an extensive campaign highlighting the negative impact of low-quality plastic products.

She further said that the students have especially been appealed not to use polythene bags and have been encouraged to use food-grade plastic tiffin and water bottles, if not thermosteel tiffin and water bottles. She said that the schools should organize exhibitions on training the students in paper bag making, emphasizing the aspect of reusing waste newspapers etc.

Near about 1200 kgs of plastic waste was collected in one day which shall be sorted and stacked in the MRF centres. The Commissioner further said that the proposal for setting up a Plastic Waste Management Plant was being placed before the General House meeting of the month.

 IGNOU’s MBA programme AICTE approved

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced MBA Programme in four new subjects Human Resource Management, Operations Management, Finance Management and Marketing Management in MBA, for the July 2022 session. Apart from these, MBA (General) is also available in offline and online mode. IGNOU has revised the curriculum of the MBA programme and reintroduced this program in five subjects along with the BBA in Service Management. Students can do this program in two to four years along with their job. IGNOU’s MBA program is highly employable.

MBA Banking and Finance is also available which is designed to suit executives working in the banking sector. Thus, there are total seven types of MBA programs. Dr.  Bhanu Pratap Singh, Regional Director of IGNOU, Regional Center Chandigarh informed that all these MBAs are approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). AICTE has approved IGNOU for one lakh admissions in MBA program for July 2022 session.

There will be no entrance test for admission to any of these MBA programmes. Applicant should have passed graduation with minimum 50% marks. Applications for admission can be made directly through IGNOU’s Samarth portal https://ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in/. Dr Bhanu Pratap Singh informed that the admissions for July 2022 session has started, the last date to apply is 22nd September, 2022. Applicants are advised to go through all the Management Programmes before applying. All admission process including fee payment is being done through Samarth portal of IGNOU.

MCC opens collection centre for e-waste

Chandigarh, September 19:- Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has launched an e-waste collection centre in the MCC campus to create awareness about proper disposal of electronic waste.

As a part of ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’, the collection centre has been started to get rid of the waste responsibly so that it does not pollute the environment, said the Commissioner. She said that this centre has been set up in association with “Karo Sambhav”, working in the field of collection of e-waste management that will further take care of the e-waste collected in the centre.

She said that it is normal for people to dump e-waste in garbage what seems innocuous comes back to the society, causing harm. The NGO will dispose it responsibly and it will also provide the MCC a report on the amount of e-waste generated with the centre. She said that this centre is a bid to segregate e-waste from domestic biodegradable waste and dispose it off to authorized recyclers.

She said that the Municipal Corporation itself generated huge quantity of e-waste including old desktops, keyboards, mouse, laptops and mobile phones etc. which will be deposited in the e-waste collection centre now and the necessary directions have been issued to the concerned offices. She said that the employees have also been advised to collect the e-waste generated in their household be deposited in the centre responsibly.

She said that while importance has been accorded to the disposal of conventional wet waste and other biodegradable waste from commercial areas and residences, e-waste collection and disposal had not received adequate focus.

She appealed the residents of city beautiful to dispose off their e-waste separately for recycling it responsibly and do not mix it with other type of household waste.

Panjab University organizes special program on Technological Innovations for Atmanirbhar Bharat

Panjab university organized a special program on “Technological Innovations for Atmanirbhar Bharat” at SAIF/CIL, Panjab University Chandigath. During the program, as per the vision of PM Modi, the role and significance of all the major government missions such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, Skilled India, Swachh Bharat, Make in India were discussed. Particularly, the importance of building a self-reliant nation through technological innovations was discussed. Prof. Narinder Singh, Department of chemistry, IIT Ropar and Prof. Ganga Ram Chaudhary, Director SAIF/CIl and Coordinator DST-STUTI PU were the keynote speakers of the event.  Prof. Narinder Singh laid a special emphasis on working towards the development of scientific process in such a way that they cater to the needs of society and nation, in particular, in a self-reliant manner. He apprised the audience with all the indigenous technologies developed by him to contribute to environmental and waste water monitoring. He discussed in detail about his scientific work in the field of sensor development from base to ultimately transfer an IoT based online water monitoring technology for remediation of water and environment.

Prof. Ganga Ram Chaudhary, spoke about Green Technologies for Environmental Sustainability where he laid special emphasis on the need to transfer scientific knowledge to technology-based commercial products. He discussed in detail about the initiatives and activities of the SAIF/CIL where he shared about all the in-house developed technologies at SAIF PU including UV Sanitization chamber & Thermal and UV Paper currency scanner, Chemical-free Car boot Sanitizer and indoor car air purifier, Specially designed wooden planters derived from waste wooden packaging of Analytical instruments etc. where the department had made significant efforts towards the missions like Swachh Bharat, Waste to wealth, Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Prof. Chaudhary talked about the importance of Skilled India Initiative led by the government and shared that SAIF PU has been continuously providing training through awareness programmes and workshops for students and researchers from Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand etc. Prof. Chaudhary presented his recently developed green and sustainable technologies for environment-friendly and economic treatment of air and waste water. He talked in detail about the recent advances in natural fiber based nanomaterials for air purification and combating hospital acquired infections. Prof. Chaudhary discussed about latest innovative measures to contribute to India’s bio-fuel requirement in future and their efficient and cost-effective production from wheat and paddy straw.

The event was attended by faculty members, research scholars, students and technical and scientific staff members of various departments and institutes. After an exhaustive discussion, the event was concluded on the note that India can become a developed nation with the power of Technological innovations. It is of utmost importance that academia should focus on industrial problems and innovations from academic institutions must be commercialized to attain sustainability.

Chandigarh, September 17:- It was a red letter day for Chandigarh, when over 2000 youth got together to form a human chain at Rose Garden, Sector 16, Chandigarh on the occasion of mega launch of ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ scheduled to be carried out from 17th September to 2nd October, 2022.


The activity was undertaken to mobilize communities from across the city to bring about behavioral change, with an aim to make the city Garbage Free. The youths from different schools and colleges of city made ‘Open Hand’, 75 Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, ‘4 type of dustbins’ (Green, Blue, Black & Red for segregation of waste), ‘Chandigarh Challengers’, the official logo of ‘Swchhata League’ and human chain besides carrying out a rally in northern sectors. The event was powered by Punjab & Sind Bank as main sponsor.


Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Chandigarh launched the ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’, 15 days long activity schedule from Swachhata League at the Rose Garden, Sector 16 in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Dalip Sharma, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Anup Gupta, Deputy Mayor, Rohit Kumar team leader, Brand Ambassadors of SBM, other dignitaries and prominent persons of city.


Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that to celebrate eight years of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh will organize ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’, a fortnight of activities to galvanize action around swachhata from 17th Sept. Seva Diwas, till 2nd Oct. 2022, Swachhata Diwas. The fortnight will focus on mobilizing citizen action and commitment towards the vision of building ‘Garbage Free City’.


She said that in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of harnessing youth energy for positive action, the first ever ‘Indian Swachhata League’, an inter-city competition took place between the youth. For the maiden edition of ISL, more than 1,850 city teams from across the country have officially registered to compete. The team ‘Chandigarh Challengers’ compete in the League by creating their own unique sanitation initiative to focus on creating garbage free tourist places, she added.
She said that the event went a long way to spread awareness about Swachhata, not just in the city beautiful, but across the entire Nation. This initiative was first of its kind in the history of Chandigarh, which will remain in the memory of people across the city and the country for a longer time. She said that this was the biggest and most effective of all mobilization activities to have ever been conducted in the city, involving youth of Chandigarh.


While sharing objective of the Swachhata League, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC said that with the aim of achieving segregation of waste at source level and ‘Garbage Free City’, the human chain mobilized communities from across the city in large numbers to join hands and pledge to ensure proper sanitation and hygiene in homes and surroundings and stop the practice of mixing waste at their households for protecting environment and well being of society.


She said that it was part of the ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ campaigns for behavior change. She said that keeping in view the event as “Zero Waste’ event participants were offered glass bottles of milk and fruits, while staff provided assistance at every step for the smooth functioning of this historic event from transporting the youths from their respective schools by deploying buses to the event venue and back to their respective schools.


She said that besides banner and standees for the promotion of the event and for developing consciousness towards sanitation and health along with ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’, T-Shirts and caps of Blue, Green, Black and Red were distributed to the participants for uniformity towards a common cause and for creating biggest symbolic chain of different type of wastes i.e. Dry waste (Blue), Wet waste (Green), Hazardous waste (Black) and Sanitary waste (Red) with a aim to promote segregation of the four type of waste at source level.
She further said that this initiative has already generated a lot of excitement and interest amongst the youth fraternity. Various other interesting initiatives have been lined up during the fortnight such as the Start-Up Challenge Forum, Toycathon- Making toys from waste, Raddi se Prgati, bhoomi pujan of legacy waste at landfill site, Mega insurance of all MCC employees, Mega full Health checkup camp for Safaimitras under the theme ‘Mahila Evm Swasthya’ and Technology Exhibition, etc finally culminating with the observation of Swachh Bharat Diwas on 2nd Oct., Gandhi Jayanti.
