School of Communication Studies hosts school students for a media visit.

18 January, 2023: School of Communication Studies, Panjab University today hosted students from a city school and organized a visit to the Community Radio Station of Panjab University, besides giving them a exposure into the myriad hues of mass communication. Dr. Bhavneet Bhatti, Chairperson, School of Communication Studies, said that “Mass Communication is a dynamic field that offers diverse career options. We are happy to host young students and show them the radio station besides orienting them towards avenues in Mass Communication.”

A total of  43 students from Banyan Tree School, Sector 48, Chandigarh accompanied by faculty members Ms. Deepika Rohilla and Ms. Portia Ohri interacted with the senior faculty members and the students of SCS. Senior Professors from SCS Prof. Mohanmeet Khosla and Prof. Archana R Singh also interacted with the students and solved their queries relating to various topics revolving around the media industry. The students of Masters of Mass Communication & Journalism showcased the in-house projects and introduced the school students to Radio Jyotirgamaya, the Community Radio Station of Panjab University. Several documentaries prepared by the students of SCS were also screened for the school students and they were introduced to the technical qualities and skills required to pursue the field.

MCC employees pledged for Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative

Chandigarh, January 18:- The employees of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today pledged for ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ initiative to celebrate National Girl Child Day on 24th January, 2023.

Sh. Gurinder Singh Sodhi, Joint Commissioner, MCC administered oath to the employees of MCC to ensure the survival and protection of the girl child and enable improved educational outcomes for the girl child. They also pledged to always extend due regard and respect to women and desist from violent behavior of any kind against them.

They pledged to extend respect and protect the dignity of women in work place and society at large. They affirm to oppose any kind of gender bias against women. They pledged to take all possible steps to uplift girls and women in society and to protect their rights.

NATIONAL YOUTH DAY CELEBRATED AT PANJAB UNIVERSITY

Department of NSS in collaboration with the Centre for Medical Physics and Sarojini Hall, GH-3 has organized a cultural event for the National Youth Day celebrations at Panjab University, Chandigarh. National Youth Day is celebrated every year on January 12 to mark the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. About 65 NSS volunteers participated in the event. Dr. Vivek Kumar, Chairperson, Centre for Medical Physics, PU and Programme Officer NSS has welcomed and motivated the volunteers with sharing teachings of Swami Vivekananda. Debates, skits and painting competition were organized. Dr. Simran Preet, Warden and NSS PO talked about the objective of the National Youth Day celebrations and motivated NSS volunteers. The youth of the country together can showcase their talents in various activities to cover almost all socio-cultural aspects of life.

MCC celebrates Lohri with Safaimitra Pariwar

Chandigarh, January 13:- The Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh celebrated Lohri with the Safai Mitra Parivaar at Water Works, Sector 37, Chandigarh.

Similarly, separate functions were organised to mark Lohri and wish the employees and their families, the sanitation wing has celebrated Lohri with Safaikarmacharies at Community centre, sector 43 and a colorful function was organized at Fire Station, Sector 17 with all the firemen and their families.

A cultural programme had been also organised at MCC head Office at sector 17 yesterday in which all the employees of head Office were participated.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh said that the celebrations were aimed at boosting the moral and confidence of all employees of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

Governor inaugurates horticulture waste processing plant at Chandigarh

Chandigarh, January 10:- Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, the Governor, Punjab and Administrator, Chandigarh inaugurated the horticulture waste processing plant at industrial area, Ph-II, here today in the presence of Mrs. Kirron Kher, Member Parliament, Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Sh. Dharm Pal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Chandigarh and other prominent persons of city beautiful.

While addressing the gathering, the Governor said that the goal of Chandigarh is to ensure that the city will be a garbage free city and due to the dedicated efforts of Municipal Corporation the city has risen from 66th rank in the Swachhata Sarvekshan of 2020 to 12th rank in 2021 among 1 lacs plus cities.

He said that the generation of horticulture waste is increasing day by day in the city and to avoid dumping of green waste due to pruning of trees, the horticulture waste processing plant is a asset to the city beautiful.

He said that earlier, horticulture waste being generated was dumped in landfills, after the commissioning of horticulture waste processing plant, all the waste will be processed in scientific manner to produce combustible products and dumping in landfill sites will be avoided. He said that the recycled products, made will generate income as the same may be sold to various industrial units. The products may also be used for cremation purposes thus saving the fuel wood being purchased for the purpose, he added.

Smt. Kirron Kher, Member Parliament, Chandigarh said that the Administration is committed to 100 percent waste processing in the city. He said that as far as liquid waste is concerned, all sewerage treatment plants are being upgraded and while 2 are already meeting norms, the remaining 6 will be upgraded shortly. She said that 100 percent dry waste processing has already been started recently and 100 percent sanitary waste and domestic hazardous waste processing has already started.

Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Chandigarh welcomed the Chief Guest and other guests on this occasion. She said that horticulture waste processing plant having capacity of 30-40 ton a day will process raw horticulture waste into briquettes. She said that total project cost comes @ Rs. 3.50 crores including cost of O&M for one year.

Sh. Dharam Pal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Chandigarh said that processing of floral waste has also been started separately. He said that an integrated plant for solid waste management which shall cater to the needs of the city for the next 25 years has been planed and premier technical institutes like NEERI and IIT Ropar are assisting the Municipal Corporation in this task.

Others present during the occasion were including Mrs. Rakhi Gupta Bhandari, IAS, Secretary to Governor of Punjab, Sh. Debendra Dalai, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forest, Chandigarh, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC, Sh. Anup Gupta, Deputy Mayor, Ms. Neha, area councillors, other councillors of MCC and senior officers of MCC.

चंडीगढ़, 9 जनवरी (): आपात स्थिति में मरीजों को स्वास्थ्य केंद्रों तक पहुंचाने वाली 108 एंबुलेंस सेवा सरकार की नीतियों के चलते बंद होने की स्थिति में पहुंच गई है। इस संबंध में 108 एंबुलेंस कर्मचारी एसोसिएशन का आरोप है कि सरकार ने उनकी जायज मांगों को हर समय अनदेखा किया है, जिससे मजबूर होकर वह सख्त कदम उठाने जा रहे हैं। यूनियन के अध्यक्ष मनप्रीत सिंह निज्जर ने आज स्थानीय प्रेस क्लब में पत्रकारों से बात करते हुए कहा कि वे लंबे समय से मांग कर रहे थे कि सरकार उनकी सेवाएं अपने अधीन ले, लेकिन अब तक कोई सुनवाई नहीं हुई है| उन्होंने कहा कि 2013 से उनका इंक्रीमेंट रुका हुआ है और सरकार इसके भुगतान को लेकर गंभीर नहीं है|
उन्होंने कहा कि नियुक्ति के समय तय हुआ था कि 108 कर्मचारियों का ट्रांसफर दूर दराज नहीं किया जाएगा, लेकिन अब सरकार कर्मचारियों का 200 से 300 किलोमीटर ट्रांसफर कर रही है. जिससे उनका जीवन आर्थिक और सामाजिक रूप से प्रभावित हो रहा है। उन्होंने मांग की कि 108 कर्मचारियों का चिकित्सा व् दुर्घटना बीमा कराया जाए तथा कोविड काल में बंद अवकाशों को बहाल किया जाए| उन्होंने मांग की कि अपने हक के लिए आवाज उठाने वाले बर्खास्त कर्मचारियों को बहाल किया जाए और एंबुलेंस चालक को नियमानुसार 12 की जगह 8 घंटे की ड्यूटी दी जाए.
इस मौके पर यूनियन के पक्ष में आए  राष्ट्रीय भगवा सेना के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष पंकज द्वेसर व अध्यक्ष संतोक सुख व् बाल्मीक समाज के गुरु नक्षत्र नाथ ने कहा कि वे सरकार को 72 घंटे का अल्टीमेटम दे रहे हैं. अगर फिर भी सरकार ने 108 एम्बुलेंस कर्मचारियों की मांगें ना मानी, तो मज़बूर होकर 108 की सेवाएं बंद कर दी जाएंगी। उन्होंने मांग की कि कंपनी के ठेके रद्द कर सरकार तत्काल 108 कर्मचारियों को अपने अधीन ले ताकि लोगों को आपातकालीन सहायता प्रदान करने वाले इन कर्मचारियों का भविष्य सुरक्षित हो सके|

Walkathon, a Cancer awareness program for women organized by Inner Wheel District

Dr. Navneet Arora, Associate consultant in Internal Medicine and infectious diseases at Paras Hospital spread the awareness to the public about the cancer symptoms and early cancer detection at Walkathon, on the occasion of International Inner wheel day organized by the Chandigarh unit of Inner wheel District, Charity fundraiser.
Walkathon, the cancer awareness program was held at the Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh which was attended by 500 people.
He emphasized on the point, “Early health check-ups are very important to detect the disease and to cure the ailment.”. He also shared information about cervical cancer and its preventive vaccination for women.
He said, “Every woman should get routine screening tests as they enter midlife. It helps to detect and treat the disease at an early stage”.

PU faculty recognised in the field of Neurosciences

Prof. Rajat Sandhir from the Department of Bio-Chemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been conferred with “Mrs. Abida Mahdi Award–2022” by the Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences for outstanding contributions in the field of Neurosciences. His research interests are to understand the biochemical and molecular mechanisms involved in development of neurodegenerative conditions like metabolic encephalopathies, dementia and brain injury with a particular interest to investigate the role of oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunctions and alterations in permeability of Blood-Brain-Barrier. In addition, his interest is also to identify neuroprotective strategies that could ameliorate neurodegenerative conditions.

Dr. Rajat Sandhir has received his M.Sc and Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. He has been at the Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University for more than tow decades. He has published in many top-ranking journals and has mentored several students for during M.Sc. and Ph.D. Many of his students occupy prestigious positions at various national and international institutions. He has an h-index of 49 and i10 index of 140. He is serving on the editorial board of many international journals and is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Neurosciences and Indian Academy of Biomedical Scientists. He has also been recipient of ‘KT Shetty Memorial Oration’ for year 2021. He has been on the editorial board of many international journals. He has been featured among the Top 2% Scientists in the World released by Stanford University (USA).
