Workshop on Creative Pattern Making and Draping at UIFT & VD

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT & VD), Panjab University, Chandigarh conducted a National level Skill Development Workshop on Creative Pattern Making and Draping under the ageis of RUSA on 3rd and 4th August 2023. The workshop witnessed a successful and insightful sessions conducted by Mr. Santosh Anand, Associate Professor,  Pearl Academy, Jaipur and Designer and entrepreneur MeghaBaldoia. MeghaBaldoia a Fashion Designer, Educator, with a strong background in couture techniques has her own label ‘MeghaBaldoia’ that showcases Bridal and Occasion wear for North American Markets.

During the inaugural session, Chairperson of the department and the coordinator of the workshop Dr. Anu H. Gupta welcomed the participants from various colleges and initiated the idea of viewing all Pattern and Draping techniques as creative and experimental. She highlighted that more than 85 registrations were received for the workshop. For a focused inputs, 30 participants got the opportunity to attend the workshop. Prof. Rajeev Puri, RUSA Co-ordinator Panjab University was delighted to see the platform of creative learning being delivered to the students of design. He highlighted the financial support for start-up proposals of innovative business ideas through the grants of RUSA.

The first day focused on the fascinating world of Dart Manipulation and 3D Pattern Designs.During the sessions, Mr. Santosh Anand delved into the art of Dart manipulation and Style lines, drawing inspiration from the works of renowned Japanese Designer Shingo Sato and the Pattern Magic book by Tomoko Nakamichi. He highlighted the techniques used to create these awe-inspiring 3D designs, emphasizing the significance of the vanish point – a crucial element in the process. Engaging hands-on activities allowed them to create their own patterns based on the Dekoboko or Drop Hole design.

On day two of workshop, the resource person Megha Baldoia taught students fine nuances of draping with great dexterity. She delivered sessions on  “Sculptured Draping of Bodice”. Draping was done in a manner that petals emerge into the structure of a 3-D flower sculpture. She emphasized on the aesthetics of the garment while draping and mentioned that heavy weight muslin would be best for such  endeavours. Students were encouraged and enthusiastically participated in the workshop as the task allowed their inner  creativity flow from within through fabric.

Students shared their learnings of the workshop by showcasing their creations. Prof. Suveera Gill, Director Centre for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Panjab University appreciated the presentations and works of the students during the Valedictory session. She complemented UIFT’s role and contribution in nurturing skill of students and vocational education. Participants were facilitated with certificates for successful completion of workshop. The expertise of the resource persons and easy-to-understand teaching style made the workshop a resounding success. Participants left the workshop with enhanced skills and a deeper appreciation for the art of pattern manipulation and 3D designs. Overall response was august. Students enjoyed the creative learning experience.

*Municipal Corporation terminates services of employees for negligence of duty at public toilets and tubewells*

Chandigarh, August 3:- In an attempt to ensure discipline and taking a strict stand towards negligence towards duty, the Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS,  terminated the services of two employees for negligence in duty and improper maintenance of public toilets at Sukhna Lake and two employees for absenteeism from duty at Tubewell cum booster at village Hallomajra and Sector 21, Chandigarh.

In an ongoing drive for improvement of functioning of public and community toilets, Water works and other public utilities , services of four employees have been terminated by Municipal Commissioner Chandigarh. These workers were found absent from duty while checking of morning water supply at about 7.00 am by Officers of MCC.

Besides this, in the last 7-10 days checking of the maintenance of the public toilets, Sector 27-C Market, Sector 8-C, Market Public Toilets and Community toilet at Ram Darbar, Opposite Hallomajra were not found satisfactory. No proper cleanliness was maintained alongwith other deficiencies.

Taking a tough stand against the concerned agencies responsible for the maintenance of these toilets have been served notice and penalties of Rs.5000/- &Rs.10000/- on each service provider., has been imposed. These agencies have been warned that in case of deficiency of service, in future their contract will also be terminated. In addition to that blacklisting notice has also been issued to one of the agencies.

Ms Anindita Mitra IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh said that the Corporation shall not tolerate any negligence in performance of duties.

Chandigarh, August 2:- Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh today launched the Swachh Chandigarh song “Rakhna Sambhaal Chandigarh”, composed and sung by India’s heart throb, famous bollywood singer B.Praak.

Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Chandigrh, Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, Secretary Local Govt., Sh. Parveer Ranjan, IPS, DGP, Chandigarh, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC, Sh. Kanwarjeet Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. B.Praak, brand ambassador, Swachh Bharat Mission, Chandigarh other councilors and prominent persons of the city were also present during the launch.

While addressing the gathering, the Governor said that the song “Rakhna Sambhal Chandigarh” has been dedicated to the citizens of Chandigarh and shall serve as a reminder of our rich heritage and the importance of cleanliness and responsible citizenship. Commending the Municipal Corporation’s efforts in transforming the Swachh Bharat Mission into a mass movement, he praised the city’s rise from the 66th rank in Swacch Sarvekshan 2021 to the 12th rank in 2022 and urged citizens to continue their efforts towards making Chandigarh a cleaner and healthier city.

The Governor also lauded the Municipal Corporation for performing exceptionally well in every wing and striving to become the best possible way to be in the top for the Swachh Survekshan 2023. He said that Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has boosted the self-confidence of every citizen. This abhiyan has brought in a permanent change in our social consciousness and our behavior as a society. We have to avoid spitting indiscriminately, throw garbage in the right place separately; we have been able to convey all these things easily, very fast to the ordinary citizens. The city is coming out from the mind-set of being comfortable even after seeing dirt everywhere now those who litter at home or on the public place will sure to get rebuked by our children and by our youth. He said cleanliness campaign is a journey, which will go on continuously.

City Mayor Sh. Anup Gupta congratulated every stakeholder of the city and the Municipal Corporation for their collective efforts in improving Chandigarh’s cleanliness. He also encouraged them to strive towards restoring Chandigarh’s lost glory by making it the number one city in Swacch Sarvekshan 2023.

Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra emphasized the importance of individual actions and good practices in maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of the city. She highlighted the Municipal Corporation’s efforts in improving its own systems and raising citizen consciousness towards Swachhata. 

She expressed her gratitude to B. Praak for composing the soul-stirring song for the city beautiful and urged all citizens to take the Swachhata campaign as a personal challenge.

Sh. B. Praak, the composer behind the Swachh Chandigarh song, expressed his excitement and gratitude to be a part of the Swachhata campaign for the city he loves most. He explained that he composed “Rakhna Sambhal Chandigarh” with the aim of inspiring citizens to take pride in their city’s beauty and cleanliness. He hopes that the song will encourage people to adopt good practices and work towards making Chandigarh the cleanest city in India. He thanked the Municipal Corporation for giving him the opportunity to contribute to the Swachh Bharat Mission and promised to support the cause in every possible way.

The launch event was a resounding success, with participants actively engaging and learning about sustainable practices. The Municipal Corporation provided waste segregation bins and composting stations to ensure that the event was a zero-waste affair. The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh urges citizens to adopt sustainable practices and take ownership of their city’s cleanliness. Citizens are encouraged to listen to the song and take inspiration from its message to contribute towards making Chandigarh the cleanest city in India. During the launch event, a Swachhata Play on theme “Swachhta ke 4 Rang, Apnaao Sang-Sang” was staged by employees of MCC.

Panjab University’s Sanskrit department and Dayanand Chair for Vedic Studies performed ‘Bhumi-Tarpana’ (worship of the earth) today on 31.7.2023. Tree plantation was organised in this event. Faculty members, office staff, research scholars and students of the department took part in the event. Prof. V. K. Alankar, Academic Incharge of the department, said during the event, “Dharaayaa bhooshanam vrikshaah, that is, trees are the ornaments of earth”. He further mentioned an episode from Ramayana, where the sons of Sagara created a disturbance in sage Matanga’s forest. “Matanga Rishi said that the forest was raised by him like his own son, which shows the kind of love and responsibility our enlightened Rishis had toward nature as a whole”, said Prof. Alankar.

Inauguration of rejuvenation works of the complete Market of Sector-24

Good news for the shopkeepers of Sector-24!! Today the inauguration ceremony was conducted for beginning  the rejuvenation work of the entire market of sector 24. The ceremony kicked off in the presence of Area Councillor, Saurabh Joshi, officers of Municipal  corporation and elated shopkeepers of market of Sector-24.

In this agenda, the entire flooring at the front and back of the complete market of Sector-24, starting from SCF-1 including Booth market, Ganesh  Market till Himachal Sarai, will be excavated and will be beautified with chequerred tiles and designed with Cobble stones. This beautification work will give a clean and brand new look to the market and a great convience to the shoppers.

Saurabh Joshi has begun a string of works to rejuvenate the entire markets of his ward no.12. Work is in progress in Sector -17 (under Smart City Project).Toilets of Sector-16 market are being renovated and the entire face of Sector-15 market will soon be transformed. This rejuvenation of Sector-24 market is another bead in the string of embellishment carried out by Saurabh Joshi.

The Councillor said,” our city is known to be ‘ the city beautiful ‘ and the markets are the face of any city as they are frequented by thousands. To keep up the name of our city, the markets have to be in supreme and splendid state.”

SDO Akhil Dhiman and JE Manoj assured the shopkeepers and the Market Association to complete the work and dedicate it to the people within 3 months. The thrilled shopkeepers thanked the councillor for getting this much desired project to their sector and lauded his adept work ethics.

*Administrator Chandigarh takes stock of progress in legacy waste biomining at dumping ground*

Chandigarh, July 24:- Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh directed the Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. and Municipal Corporation Chandigarh to speed up the work of clearing the legacy waste from the dumping ground in Dadu Majra.

The Governor visited the dumping ground and legacy mining site  at Dadumajra today in the presence of Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Sh. Dharam Pal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, Secretary Local Government, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC & CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd., Sh. Kanwarjeet Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, area councillor and other councillors and officers of MCC & CSCL.

Expressing concern about the health and hygiene of residents of Dadumajra, the Governor directed the officers concerned to clear the backlog of RDF lying inside the boundary wall at earliest. He directed the officers to speed up the process to clear the rest of the legacy waste from the mining site with additional processing by putting more manpower and machinery if required.

The Commissioner apprised the Governor that the work of Legacy Waste Mining of 5 Lac Ton has been completed under Smart City Mission. Now the agency is lifting the RDF stacked at site and approx. 20 acre of land will be reclaimed and thereafter,soil from Patiala ki Rao will be used to level the area. 

The Governor directed the concerned officers  to immediately give the required clearances for lifting of soil. The Municipal Commissioner, Chandigarh-cum-Chief Executive Officer, Chandigarh Smart City Limited assured that the work of recovering of this 20 acre land shall be completed in the month of August 2023.

The Governor was further apprised  that the temporary plant for composting shall be set up on this land only. The Governor desired that the same be set up expeditiously. Further, the Governor directed the officials to speed up the work of reconstruction of the boundary wall which had fallen during the rainy season, the bio remediation of legacy waste and setting up of both the temporary composting plant as well as the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plant.

Chandigarh, July 24:- The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has taken a significant step towards preserving cleanliness in its parks & green belts. Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor Chandigarh and Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, officers of Municipal Corporation and residents, flagged off the new system for garbage collection.

The new system has been designed to efficiently collect, lift, and transport garbage from litter bins in parks, making the process streamlined and effective. This initiative is part of the Municipal Corporation’s ongoing efforts to create a cleaner and greener city for all its citizens.

Speaking during the occasion, the Mayor stressed the importance of promoting responsible waste disposal practices among the citizens of Chandigarh. He said that all citizens have a collective responsibility to keep the city clean and healthy. By working together, they can build a sustainable future for the generations to come, added the Mayor.

The Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating that the new system for garbage collection in parks is a crucial step towards enhancing the beauty and cleanliness of the city’s green spaces. She urged citizens to use litter bins and dispose of waste responsibly for the betterment of the environment.

She further stated that Municipal Corporation is continuously working towards improving the upkeep of its green spaces. Earlier, dustbins of stainless steel had been installed in all parks and green belts and now a proper system has been put in place to ensure that the dustbins are cleared and litter picking done on a daily basis.

Chandigarh, July 23:- Reiterating the commitment of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh to make the city No 1 is Swacchta Sarvekshan, Commissioner Municipal Corporation did surprises checking early in the morning, across various  sectors. 

Bringing the focus back on Swacchta, toilets, road berms , open areas, back lanes and parks were inspected by Ms Anindita Mitra IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation today. She was accompanied by Sh Gurinder Sodhi PCS and Sh N P Sharma Chief Engineer.  Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS  today directed the concerned officials of engineering wing and sanitation inspectors to strictly monitor the cleaning of urinals and toilets in public places to ensure better hygiene during monsoon.

During her early morning inspection of city Markets, roads and toilets, the Commissioner today inspected the areas of sector 4, 7, 27, 28, 51, 52, Industrial area and Ramdarbar. 

She directed the staff deployed in public toilets to clean the toilets at least thrice daily. She also asked the concerned officials to check if the facilities are unclean or filthy. Cleaning of toilets near colonies and pockets are being monitored closely where there are more chances of the virus spreading. She directed the officials for ensuring availability of adequate water at these facilities adding that if any toilets is found unhygienic during the inspection by the commissioner appropriate action will be taken against the concerned officials of the concerned area.

The Commissioner said that poor sanitation results in a multitude of problems. A dirty toilet not only invites disease but also impacts citizens’ health and dignity and depletes the environment. Availability to clean public toilet seats will lead to cleaner roads and pedestrian footpaths fresh air, aesthetically beautiful gardens, healthy and mindful citizens and a significantly clear city,” said the Commissioner.

In addition to that she directed the concerned engineers to clean road berms and repair broken kerb channels. She also directed them for proper pruning of trees and regular lifting of horticulture waste and malba scattered on the open spaces.

She also inspected segregation of waste at households and appreciated the local residents for keeping their garbage wet, dry, hazardous and sanitary separately. She suggested the local residents keep their waste in compostable bags instead of keeping it in Polythene bags.

Further, she solicited the support and cooperation of residents of Chandigarh in keeping the city clean and green.
