Panjab University’s Sanskrit department and Dayanand Chair for Vedic Studies performed ‘Bhumi-Tarpana’ (worship of the earth) today on 31.7.2023. Tree plantation was organised in this event. Faculty members, office staff, research scholars and students of the department took part in the event. Prof. V. K. Alankar, Academic Incharge of the department, said during the event, “Dharaayaa bhooshanam vrikshaah, that is, trees are the ornaments of earth”. He further mentioned an episode from Ramayana, where the sons of Sagara created a disturbance in sage Matanga’s forest. “Matanga Rishi said that the forest was raised by him like his own son, which shows the kind of love and responsibility our enlightened Rishis had toward nature as a whole”, said Prof. Alankar.

Chandigarh, July 31:- The Finance and Contract committee of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has decided to repair and renovate the Sewa Kendra in Sector 25, Chandigarh including approved various developmental agenda items. The meeting of F&CC was held here today under the Chairmanship of Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor  and attended by Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner and other members of committee namely Sh. Gurpreet Singh, Smt. Harpreet Kaur Babla, Smt. Prem Lata, Ms. Neha  and other senior officers of MCC.

Inauguration of rejuvenation works of the complete Market of Sector-24

Good news for the shopkeepers of Sector-24!! Today the inauguration ceremony was conducted for beginning  the rejuvenation work of the entire market of sector 24. The ceremony kicked off in the presence of Area Councillor, Saurabh Joshi, officers of Municipal  corporation and elated shopkeepers of market of Sector-24.

In this agenda, the entire flooring at the front and back of the complete market of Sector-24, starting from SCF-1 including Booth market, Ganesh  Market till Himachal Sarai, will be excavated and will be beautified with chequerred tiles and designed with Cobble stones. This beautification work will give a clean and brand new look to the market and a great convience to the shoppers.

Saurabh Joshi has begun a string of works to rejuvenate the entire markets of his ward no.12. Work is in progress in Sector -17 (under Smart City Project).Toilets of Sector-16 market are being renovated and the entire face of Sector-15 market will soon be transformed. This rejuvenation of Sector-24 market is another bead in the string of embellishment carried out by Saurabh Joshi.

The Councillor said,” our city is known to be ‘ the city beautiful ‘ and the markets are the face of any city as they are frequented by thousands. To keep up the name of our city, the markets have to be in supreme and splendid state.”

SDO Akhil Dhiman and JE Manoj assured the shopkeepers and the Market Association to complete the work and dedicate it to the people within 3 months. The thrilled shopkeepers thanked the councillor for getting this much desired project to their sector and lauded his adept work ethics.

*Administrator Chandigarh takes stock of progress in legacy waste biomining at dumping ground*

Chandigarh, July 24:- Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh directed the Chandigarh Smart City Ltd. and Municipal Corporation Chandigarh to speed up the work of clearing the legacy waste from the dumping ground in Dadu Majra.

The Governor visited the dumping ground and legacy mining site  at Dadumajra today in the presence of Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Sh. Dharam Pal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, Secretary Local Government, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC & CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd., Sh. Kanwarjeet Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, area councillor and other councillors and officers of MCC & CSCL.

Expressing concern about the health and hygiene of residents of Dadumajra, the Governor directed the officers concerned to clear the backlog of RDF lying inside the boundary wall at earliest. He directed the officers to speed up the process to clear the rest of the legacy waste from the mining site with additional processing by putting more manpower and machinery if required.

The Commissioner apprised the Governor that the work of Legacy Waste Mining of 5 Lac Ton has been completed under Smart City Mission. Now the agency is lifting the RDF stacked at site and approx. 20 acre of land will be reclaimed and thereafter,soil from Patiala ki Rao will be used to level the area. 

The Governor directed the concerned officers  to immediately give the required clearances for lifting of soil. The Municipal Commissioner, Chandigarh-cum-Chief Executive Officer, Chandigarh Smart City Limited assured that the work of recovering of this 20 acre land shall be completed in the month of August 2023.

The Governor was further apprised  that the temporary plant for composting shall be set up on this land only. The Governor desired that the same be set up expeditiously. Further, the Governor directed the officials to speed up the work of reconstruction of the boundary wall which had fallen during the rainy season, the bio remediation of legacy waste and setting up of both the temporary composting plant as well as the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plant.

Chandigarh, July 24:- The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has taken a significant step towards preserving cleanliness in its parks & green belts. Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor Chandigarh and Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, officers of Municipal Corporation and residents, flagged off the new system for garbage collection.

The new system has been designed to efficiently collect, lift, and transport garbage from litter bins in parks, making the process streamlined and effective. This initiative is part of the Municipal Corporation’s ongoing efforts to create a cleaner and greener city for all its citizens.

Speaking during the occasion, the Mayor stressed the importance of promoting responsible waste disposal practices among the citizens of Chandigarh. He said that all citizens have a collective responsibility to keep the city clean and healthy. By working together, they can build a sustainable future for the generations to come, added the Mayor.

The Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating that the new system for garbage collection in parks is a crucial step towards enhancing the beauty and cleanliness of the city’s green spaces. She urged citizens to use litter bins and dispose of waste responsibly for the betterment of the environment.

She further stated that Municipal Corporation is continuously working towards improving the upkeep of its green spaces. Earlier, dustbins of stainless steel had been installed in all parks and green belts and now a proper system has been put in place to ensure that the dustbins are cleared and litter picking done on a daily basis.

Chandigarh, July 23:- Reiterating the commitment of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh to make the city No 1 is Swacchta Sarvekshan, Commissioner Municipal Corporation did surprises checking early in the morning, across various  sectors. 

Bringing the focus back on Swacchta, toilets, road berms , open areas, back lanes and parks were inspected by Ms Anindita Mitra IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation today. She was accompanied by Sh Gurinder Sodhi PCS and Sh N P Sharma Chief Engineer.  Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS  today directed the concerned officials of engineering wing and sanitation inspectors to strictly monitor the cleaning of urinals and toilets in public places to ensure better hygiene during monsoon.

During her early morning inspection of city Markets, roads and toilets, the Commissioner today inspected the areas of sector 4, 7, 27, 28, 51, 52, Industrial area and Ramdarbar. 

She directed the staff deployed in public toilets to clean the toilets at least thrice daily. She also asked the concerned officials to check if the facilities are unclean or filthy. Cleaning of toilets near colonies and pockets are being monitored closely where there are more chances of the virus spreading. She directed the officials for ensuring availability of adequate water at these facilities adding that if any toilets is found unhygienic during the inspection by the commissioner appropriate action will be taken against the concerned officials of the concerned area.

The Commissioner said that poor sanitation results in a multitude of problems. A dirty toilet not only invites disease but also impacts citizens’ health and dignity and depletes the environment. Availability to clean public toilet seats will lead to cleaner roads and pedestrian footpaths fresh air, aesthetically beautiful gardens, healthy and mindful citizens and a significantly clear city,” said the Commissioner.

In addition to that she directed the concerned engineers to clean road berms and repair broken kerb channels. She also directed them for proper pruning of trees and regular lifting of horticulture waste and malba scattered on the open spaces.

She also inspected segregation of waste at households and appreciated the local residents for keeping their garbage wet, dry, hazardous and sanitary separately. She suggested the local residents keep their waste in compostable bags instead of keeping it in Polythene bags.

Further, she solicited the support and cooperation of residents of Chandigarh in keeping the city clean and green.

Chandigarh, July 21:- Aiming to provide affordable items to those in need while promoting the concept of reducing, reusing and recycling, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has started its fourth ‘One Ruppee Store’ at the Community Centre, Sundar Nagar, Mauli Jagran, here today.

City Mayor, Sh. Anup Gupta inaugurated the store in the evening in the presence of  Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, the area councilor Smt. Bimla Dubey, other senior officials of MCC, and prominent members of the ward.

While speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that the MCC’s permanent RRR center in Sector 17 has received an overwhelming response from citizens, enabling the establishment of this store. The aim of this initiative is to provide affordable items to those in need while promoting the concept of reducing, reusing, and recycling. The store offers a variety of items such as books, electronics, clothing, crockery, kitchenware, toys, and bed sheets, all priced at just Rs. 1 per item.

He said that the Municipal Corporation has set up its permanent RRR center at New Bridge Market, near Jagat Cinema in Sector 17, where citizens are encouraged to donate items that are no longer in use to help those in need. He added that after cleaning, repairing, and refurbishing the donated items collected at the RRR center in Sector 17, the MCC is committed to organizing more such one-rupee stores in different areas/wards of the city.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, also expressed her gratitude to the citizens of tricity for their overwhelming response and support. She noted that this is the fourth successful one-rupee store, and the MCC is committed to serving the community by establishing more such stores throughout the city. The launch of this store is a testament to the MCC’s efforts towards creating sustainable and inclusive practices that benefit citizens from all walks of life. She said that the MCC is showing its commitment towards promoting sustainability and inclusivity with opening of these kind of stores in the colony areas of the city.

Digital Population Clock Inaugurated at PU

The Population Research Centre(PRC) Panjab University, Chandigarh installed a Population Clock at T Point Near USOL of the Panjab University Chandigarh.  The population clock installed will be one with dual population statistics display i.e it will display the population figures of India as well as the population figure of Chandigarh .

The digital population clock was inaugurated by Shri Banwari Lal Purohit Ji, Honorable Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh. Shri Purohit ji discussed the features of the population clock and its benefit for the younger generation. Shri S.R. Meena Director General (Stats) also highlighted the relevance of the population clock.

Prof Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh in her remarks discussed the setting up of population clock, the issues of population growth, the problems of small family norm and falling sex-ratios she congratulated the Population Research Centre for this achievement.

Shri Satya Pal Jain, ADG and former MP who was the guest of honor discussed the issues of population growth, development and size of population.

Other members present includes University officials, faculty members, fellow and students were also present on the occasion.

Prof. Kumool Abhi, Director, PRC informed that the Population Clock is funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Government of India and total cost of installation of the population was Rs. 4,03,560.00.  

A digital population clock is an essential population data tool used to estimate real-time population size of a geographical/ administrative area based on scientific assumptions about birth, death and net migration rates. This clock will be of immense help in spreading awareness about various parameters of fertility, mortality and family planning among researchers, faculty members, students, young generations and the community at large.  Further the clock will help in enhancing the visibility of the Population Research Centre both within and outside the University campus.

Cleanliness Drive at Student Centre, PU, Chandigarh

The National Service Scheme (NSS) in collaboration with the Dean Student Welfare organized the Cleanliness Drive at Student Centre, PU, Chandigarh. About 100 students, faculty members, DSE office staff and horticulture workers participated in the programme. The enthusiastic volunteers comprising dedicated students from various departments, came together to take part in this noble initiative. The primary objective was to promote a clean and hygienic environment and raise awareness about the importance of maintaining cleanliness for the healthier community. During the drive the N.S.S. volunteer diligently cleaned the surrounding, collected and disposed of litter, demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability and community welfare.

About 10 students from Enactus Panjab University team participated in this drive. Prof. Jitender Grover (DSW), Prof. Simrat Kahlon (DSW-Women) and Dr. Naresh Kumar (Associate DSW) encouraged the students and took part in this cleanliness drive. All wardens of the girls and boys hostels were also present.

Dr. Vivek Kumar, Chairperson, CMP and NSS PO and Dr. Simran Preet, NSS-PO also participated in the program and motivated the NSS volunteers. During the cleanliness drive, all the students were advised to dispose of waste properly, avoid littering, and maintain cleanliness in student centre, PU. This cleanliness drive is just one of the many initiatives undertaken by the NSS unit of Panjab University, Chandigarh as part of its commitment to community service and social upliftment.
