*Lays foundation stone for installation of effluent treatment plant of 40 KLD at Gaushala Sector 45 & 20 KLD at Gaushala Sector 25*

*Chandigarh, December 13:-* Aimed at treating the wastewater generated from the Gaushalas, which improves the quality of the wastewater and removes harmful substances, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has started the work of installation of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) at Gaushala Sector 45 and Gaushala, Near Cremation Ground at Sector 25, Chandigarh.

City Mayor Sh. Anup Gupta today started the work of installation of Effluent Treatment Plant of 40 Killo Litter per Day (KLD) capacity at Gaushala Sector 45 and 20 KLD capacities at Gaushala Sector 25, Chandigarh in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Municipal Commissioner, Sh. Gurpreet Singh Gabi, area councillor, officers of MCC and prominent persons of the area.

While speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that the work of installation of ETP at Gaushala, Sector 25 will be completed within two months at a cost of Rs. 101.93 lacs having capacity of 20 KLD while the installation of ETP at Gaushala, Sector 45 will be completed within two months at a cost of Rs. 151.93 lacs having capacity of 40 KLD.

The Mayor said that it was essential to construct ETPs to treat the liquid excreta of the animals, which contains high amounts of BOD and COD, which need to be treated to acceptable standards before they can be discharged into the estate sewerage system. He said that it was crucial to treat this waste to prevent any harmful impact on the environment and maintain the hygiene and sanitation levels of the city.

*Chandigarh, December 11:-* Aiming to provide essential skills and knowledge to accurately complete the ‘CT/PT Grading’, MC Chandigarh conducted a training session as part of the Clean Toilets campaign, with a specific focus on Toilet Grading. The designated Self-Help Group (SHG) team, “स्वच्छता पारखी” comprised both Men and Women , and officials from the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh and Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), attended the session at the Municipal Corporation Office.

During the training, the Toilet Grading team, “स्वच्छता पारखी”, gained a comprehensive understanding of the parameters involved in the grading process. The session provided an opportunity for participants to address any queries or concerns they had, ensuring a clear understanding of the grading criteria. The grading exercise is set to begin on 15th December, coinciding with the Good Governance Day on 25th December.

The Clean Toilets campaign, launched by MoHUA, aims to improve sanitation facilities across the country. One of the key aspects of this campaign is the grading of public and community toilets based on predefined parameters. By implementing a standardized grading system, the campaign aims to enhance the overall quality and cleanliness of public sanitation facilities.

The Master Trainers and the team, “स्वच्छता पारखी”, who participated in the Toilet Grading training, will play a crucial role in disseminating this knowledge within their respective communities of women SHG members. Their understanding of the grading process will empower them to assess and grade toilets accurately, contributing to the overall success of the Clean Toilets campaign.

This joint effort between the Swachh Bharat Mission and DAY-NULM in Chandigarh is an exemplary collaboration that prioritizes sanitation, inclusivity, and empowerment. The dedicated team of SHGs associated with DAY-NULM, consisting of nine groups named Shagun, Pryshth, Khwahish, Angel, Luckey, Megha, Pari, Somya, and Divya, is leading the charge. Comprising 25 women, this diverse team brings a wealth of expertise and commitment to ensure the successful implementation of the toilet grading exercise citywide.

With a total of 331 public conveniences, including Community Toilets (CT) and Public Toilets (PT), scheduled for assessment, the scale of this endeavor is considerable. Each facility will undergo a meticulous grading process based on a predefined set of criteria, leaving no aspect unexamined in the pursuit of excellence.

Municipal Commissioner, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS highlighted the importance of equipping the team, “स्वच्छता पारखी”, with the necessary skills and knowledge. In collaboration with DAY-NULM’s SHG team, MC Chandigarh will organize comprehensive training sessions before the grading exercise begins. These sessions will cover essential aspects of the grading process, ensuring that the team is well-versed in the evaluation criteria and capable of carrying out their responsibilities with precision and professionalism.

She further emphasized the empowerment of the SHG team, “स्वच्छता पारखी”. Official authorization letters will be provided to them, reaffirming the significance of their role in this crucial campaign. Additionally, their diligent work will be recognized through fixed remuneration, demonstrating the value and appreciation for their efforts.

The collaboration between the Swachh Bharat Mission and DAY-NULM stands as a shining example of collective action driving positive change. By leveraging the expertise and dedication of the SHGs, this partnership aims to elevate the standards of cleanliness and sanitation in Chandigarh’s public conveniences, promoting inclusivity and empowering communities.

*A Zero Waste three day show hosted by MC Chandigarh begun today*

*Chandigarh, December 8:-* The beautiful City of Flowers, Chandigarh, is hosting the three-day Chrysanthemum Show at the Terraced Garden in Sector 33. The show begun today and will continue until December 10, from 11 am to 7 pm each day.

The zero waste flower show inaugurated by the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Sh. Banwarilal Purohit, in the presence of City Mayor Sh. Anup Gupta, Adviser to Administrator, Sh. Nitin Yadav IAS, Sh. Parveer Ranjan, IPS, DGP, Municipal Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Senior Deputy Mayor Sh. Kanwarjeet Rana, area councillor Smt. Anju Katyal, other councillors, senior officers of the civic body and prominent residents of city beautiful.

Sh. Banwarilal Purohit appreciated the beauty of the flowers at The Zero Waste 36th Chrysanthemum Show 2023. Taking a moment to capture the essence of the event, he, along with Mayor Chandigarh, Sh. Anup Gupta, and Adviser to Administrator, Sh. Nitin Yadav IAS, posed in front of the stunning “Rakhna Sambhal Chandigarh” floral topiary at The Zero Waste 36th Chrysanthemum Show 2023.

This annual event, now in its second consecutive year, has been transformed into a zero waste initiative by the civic body. Alongside showcasing various stalls with different initiatives and projects of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the event promotes sustainability and environmental consciousness.

During his visit, Sh. Banwarilal Purohit toured all the stalls, including the Swachh Bharat Mission stall, which raises awareness about waste segregation at the source. Other stalls showcased horticulture waste composting, home composting, safai mitra, construction and demolition waste management, and a unique and eco-friendly initiative called PRARAMBH, a one-stop store for sustainable products run by a self-help group supported by the civic body.

After the park tour, the Chief Guest paid respects at the Martyr’s Pillar in the Terraced Garden by laying flowers.

As part of the event, Sh. Banwarilal Purohit unveiled an artistically designed brochure on the show. the gardeners (Malis) – the heroes behind the enchanting beauty of our city parks – were also honored by the Chief Guest at the Zero Waste 36th Chrysanthemum Show 2023 for their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts.

The chief guest praised the officials of the Municipal Corporation for organizing such a splendid show. He encouraged citizens to maintain the beauty of the city’s gardens and urged them to have a small garden either on their terrace or balcony.

Sustainability, creativity, and innovation come together at the special attraction of the “Zero Waste” 36th Chrysanthemum Show 2023, featuring the Waste-to-Wonder park at the Terraced Garden.

Waste materials like tires, chains, iron sheets, and plastic have been ingeniously transformed into remarkable structures. From tunnels to see-saws, spring riders to crawling obstacles, and benches made of construction and demolition waste, this park is a true wonderland.

Children can also enjoy a game of snakes and ladders “ Swachhata Ki Saanp Sidhi” made from recycled materials.

Additionally, the Viksit Bharat Yatra camp is also a part of the show, offering citizens the opportunity to inquire about prominent government schemes and enroll in them. A van has been deployed at the Terraced Garden for the next three days to raise awareness among citizens about the various government schemes. The van also showcases a message from the Prime Minister of India, Sh. Narendra Modi, addressing the citizens.

For visitors, MC Chandigarh has made arrangements for public amenities, including a special lost and found counter, a medical counter, water facilities, and clean and hygienic Public Conveniences.

Keeping in view to provide food items on reasonable rates inside the festival ground, the MCC has arranged beautiful ‘Zero Waste Rasoi’, where plastic items have totally banned and promoted biodegradable and recyclable products.

While addressing the gathering, city Mayor lauded the efforts of gardeners and officials, who made this event vibrant and colorful with the beautiful display of chrysanthemum flowers. He also appreciated the decision to organize this three day show a zero waste event.

*Chandigarh December 5:-* Aiming to educate young individuals on the importance of managing used plastic efficiently, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has organized an informative workshop and exhibition “Bottles for Change” in collaboration with Bisleri International.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MC, Chandigarh inaugurated the workshop in the presence of Sh. Ram Chandra Yadav, area councillor, Mr. K. Ganesh, Senior General Manager of Bisleri, Mrs. Varinder Kaur, Principal, teachers and school children.

While speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner said that the MCC has taken a significant step towards promoting sustainability and waste management with the launch of the “Bottles for Change” program. She said that the programme, which includes an informative workshop and exhibition, aims to educate individuals on the importance of managing used plastic efficiently.

She commended the government school students of GMHS RC-1, GMHS RC-2, and Primary School, Dhanas, as well as the participating NGOs, for their highly informative exhibition on waste management, water purification, and recycling. Taking a personal interest, the Commissioner visited each stall at the exhibition, which showcased sustainability projects constructed using waste materials. She interacted with the children, lauded their efforts, and provided valuable guidance for further improvement.

The exhibited educational models served as excellent examples of the reduce, reuse, and recycle (RRR) concept. The students demonstrated their creativity by utilizing discarded materials such as waste paper, used plastic bottles, cardboard, clothes, wool, old newspapers, toys, coconut shells, ice cream sticks, and various others. Notably, the exhibition also featured a range of items manufactured from plastic waste, including planters, tiles, T-shirts, tiffin box covers, coasters, and more.

The dedicated Bottles for Change Stall by the students highlighted numerous exhibits:

1. Creative utilization of used PET bottles for the creation of fabrics, shirts, T-shirts, soft toy stuffing, pillows, and more.

2. HDPE recycling into granules for the production of pens, cups, organizers, and stationery items.

3. LDPE transformation into granules to create pots, buckets, boards, toys, and various other products.

4. Sterile and sorted medical waste repurposed into pellets, bricks, and other useful materials.

5. MLP (Multi-Layer Plastic) processed into sheets for the construction of school furniture, dustbins, boards, stands, and more.

6. Mixed low-value plastic to be processed for agricultural pipes.

The Commissioner inspired the school students to initiate positive change within society by emphasizing the significance of source segregation and proper disposal of all types of used plastic into designated bins. She shared her personal experience of using cloth bags instead of plastic bags and encouraged young minds to follow suit.

In further support of the cause, the Commissioner inaugurated the installation of used plastic collection bins in all three schools – GMHS RC-1, GMHS RC-2, and Primary School, Dhanas. These bins will facilitate the collection of used plastics to be sent for recycling. She called upon the area councillor and Principal of Dhanas School to collaborate with Bisleri in their joint efforts to eliminate plastic littering in Dhanas and ensure that all used plastic is properly recycled.
