Nottingham Trent University (NTU), UK to strengthen collaborations with PU- Signed MoUs

An international delegation comprising Professor Edward Peck, Vice-Chancellor and President, ⁠Professor Cillian Ryan, Pro Vice-Chancellor International, Professor Neil Mansfield -Executive Dean-Research and International Reputation, Mr Stephen Williams, Director, NTU Global, Professor Mohsen Rahmani, Department of Engineering, School of Science and Technology, Ms.VidhiSahae, Senior Global Partnerships Manager, from Nottingham Trent University (NTU) United Kingdom (UK) visited Panjab University (PU) on February 13, 2024.  The delegation met with the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Professor RenuVigto discuss current and future collaborative initiatives under the partnership between PU and NTU.

After formal introduction, the existing MoU between PU and NTU was renewedfor a term of another five years.  The focus of this MoU shall be on the mutual exchange of information on course development and teaching methods, development of collaborative courses leading to awards of NTU, exchange and mobility of staff and students, development of joint research projects, organizing joint lectures and seminars etc.

AProgression Agreement with University Institute of Legal Studieswas also signed. Under this Agreement, PU students who have successfully completed the PU course, be eligible to apply to Progress onto the start of the relevant NTU course on the terms set out in the Progression Agreement.All students who progress directly from the PU Course to the NTU Course at Nottingham Law Schoolwill receive a flat rate discount of 3000/- Pounds off the published Tuition Fees for the first year of study at NTU.

Professor Sanjeev Puri, Director, University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) highlighted the outcomes of sponsored research projects, and future plans to be achieved under the collaboration between PU and NTU. He shared that 13 papers were published, two bilateral visits were arranged and four collaborative events were organized under collaborative projects.

Professor Edward Peck said ‘It was a pleasure to be back at Panjab University again to celebrate the depth and impact of our partnership over the last eight years and to renew our collaboration which will take us to an even more exciting future.’ Professor Neil Mansfield confirmed that NTU would be delighted to support 6 dual PhD students where research will be conducted on both the institutions.

Professor Renu Vig emphasized the need for international collaborations and their impact on university ranking at the international level. The possibilities of dual Ph.D. degree and postgraduate degrees in various disciplines and collaboration in relevant areas of research and development were also discussed.

*Chandigarh, February 13:-* Aiming to foster sustainability, the MC Chandigarh, in its commitment to promoting cleanliness and environmental awareness, joyously celebrated this year’s Basant Panchmi as “Swachh Basant Utsav.” The event aimed to inspire citizens to embrace sustainable practices and create a cleaner, greener future for all.

A special symbolic kite dedicated to the pride of the city, Safaimitras, was also part of the event. It was hand-painted by the SHGs. This gesture recognized the invaluable contribution of Safaimitras in keeping the city clean and highlighted their role in maintaining the cleanliness of Chandigarh.

MX Kajal Mangalmukhi, Brand Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission, also graced the occasion and celebrated Swachh Basant Utsav while spreading the message of Swachhata.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS Commissioner said that MC Chandigarh is committed to creating a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable environment for the citizens of Chandigarh. Through various initiatives, MC Chandigarh strives to promote cleanliness, environmental awareness, Community engagement and sustainable practices in the city.

To infuse additional excitement into the “Swachh Basant Utsav” celebration, MC Chandigarh organized two competitions – kite flying and mehndi. These competitions witnessed enthusiastic participation from MC officers, employees, Safaimitras and SHG’s group, showcasing their commitment to cleanliness and environmental consciousness.

Each kite that soared into the sky bore a Swachhata Message, emphasizing the importance of source segregation, avoiding littering, reducing plastic usage, and adopting home composting. The use of eco-friendly kite strings further highlighted the event’s focus on sustainable practices and the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ (RRR) principle.

Employing a zero-waste approach, the event underscored the crucial importance of sustainability. It aimed to inspire citizens to embrace cleanliness and environmentally conscious practices for the betterment of the community and the environment as a whole. The event also featured kite-shaped floral topiaries, adding to its visual appeal.

Incorporating the spirit of peace, prosperity, and positive energy, the event radiated the ‘yellow color’ element throughout the decor and attire, setting a vibrant and cheerful ambiance. The yellow color symbolizes hope, optimism, and the desire for a brighter and cleaner future.

MC Chandigarh takes pride in orchestrating the “Swachh Basant Utsav” and pledges to continue fostering a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for all citizens. *Municipal Corporation focuses on  capacity building and training of safaimitras*

*Chandigarh, February 12:-* Aiming to improve the capacity and enhance awareness of safaimitras, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh organized a comprehensive training workshop today at the Municipal Corporation Building in Sector-17, Chandigarh. 

With Swachh Survekshan 2024 in the horizon, MC Chandigarh’s Training and Capacity experts delivered informative sessions covering six major subject areas: Solid Waste Management, Domestic Hazardous Waste Management, Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act, Disaster Management & Epidemic Response, Government Scheme Linkages, and Mental Health and Well-being.

Municipal Commissioner, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, shared that MC Chandigarh remains dedicated to the professional growth and development of its employees. The organization has dedicated the entire month of February to conducting the Capacity Building and Training Workshop, ensuring comprehensive coverage of essential topics.

She further added that , by organizing this capacity building and training workshop, the organization strives to equip its workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality services to the citizens of Chandigarh.

The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from 300 attendees who actively shared their experiences and knowledge with fellow workers. The participants had the opportunity to interact with the experts and clarify their doubts on each segment. Furthermore, the attendees received guidance on recognizing and avoiding fraudulent phone calls and messages related to banking.

In line with MC Chandigarh’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the workshop also emphasized the promotion of Zero Waste Events. This initiative aims to minimize waste generation and promote responsible waste management practices.

*MCC conducts Income Tax-TDS awareness seminar*

Chandigarh, February 09:- The Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, TDS range, Chandigarh in coordination with Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has conducted an Income Tax-TDS/TCS awareness programme including introduction of new provisions. The seminar was carried out at the conference hall, 6th floor, MCC building, Sector 17, Chandigarh.

Sh. Surinder Meena, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, TDS range Chandigarh addressed the seminar, which was attended by all DDOs and officers/officials of responsible for TDS/TCS in MCC. Sh. Jasvir Singh Saini, Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax (TDS),  Smt. Saroj Bala, Income Tax Officer were also present during the seminar.

The seminar was very informative and advisable in respect of new provisions of TDS/TCS.

Enlightening Discourse on Fundamental Rights at UILS

The Centre for Constitution and Public Policy, UILS, Panjab University, orchestrated a remarkable interactive session that left an indelible mark on the tapestry of academic enlightenment. Renowned senior advocate, Mr. Saurabh Kirpal, graced the occasion with his erudition on the theme, “Role of Courts in Interpreting Fundamental Rights.” The vibrant session unfolded into an interactive symphony between Mr. Kirpal and the eager students, who hung on to every word with rapt attention. Prof Shruti Bedi, Director UILS and Prof. Rattan Singh spearheaded the session which was moderated by Swastik Singh and Agastya. Adding a delightful dimension to the event, a book signing session ensued, allowing students to engage directly with Mr. Kirpal and witness firsthand the embodiment of legal wisdom. UILS takes pride in fostering such dialogues that elevate the understanding of law amongst the legal fraternity.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date for online admission to all Masters, Bachelors, PG Diploma, Diploma and Certificate programmes and online Re-registration of all Masters and Bachelors for the session January, 2024 session till 15th February, 2024. Dr. Bhanu Pratap Singh, Senior Regional Director of IGNOU Regional Center Chandigarh informed that interested applicants can apply through online link for admission to any Masters, Bachelors, PG Diploma, Diploma and Certificate programmes of their choice: https://ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in/ which is available on IGNOU website www.ignou.ac.in.

SC/ST students will be admitted without charging any fee in some of the Diploma/PG Diploma & Graduate Programmes and they will have to apply online and to upload all necessary documents for fee exemption. *Mayor dedicates various developmental works to public at village Kaimbwala*

*Chandigarh, January 27:-* Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Chandigarh today dedicated various developmental works completed by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh at village Kaimbwala, here today in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, councilors and officers of MCC, and other prominent persons of the area.

While sharing information about the various developmental works at village Kaimbwala, the Mayor said that recarpeting of phirni road village Kaimbwala and re-construction of internal gullies in village Kaimbwala were the major works, which gave big relief to the local residents.

He said that due to increasing population, the existing sewerage infrastructure was becoming insufficient and residents regularly complaining for the poor facilities. Hence, the work of strengthening the existing public health pipes and providing new pipelines as required was taken up by the Public Health Department. The work of strengthening of existing sewerage network and storm water drainage network of village Kaimbwala has been completed at a cost of approximately Rs. 1.30 Crores. As the public health department began their work, the residents demanded for the carpeting and internal streets works which were pending since the villages were under the jurisdiction of Chandigarh Administration. Hence, on the requests of village residents, the works of phirni roads and internal streets of the village Kaimbwala was taken up by the Road wing of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. The work of reconstruction of phirni road and internal main roads of the village has been completed at a cost of approximately Rs. 60 lakhs.

The Mayor said that similarly, the work of providing and fixing of paver blocks on internal streets of the village has been done for approximately Rs. 34 lakhs. Nearly 10,000 people in the village will get benefit from these projects as roads have been damaged in the past many years due to the work of public health to provide water supply, sewerage and stormwater lines in villages under the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

          Sh. Gurinder Singh Sodhi, Joint Commissioner, MCC administered oath to the employees of MCC. They pledged that they citizens of India, having abiding faith in democracy, hereby pledged to uphold the democratic traditions of our country and the dignity of free, fair and peaceful election, and to vote in every election fearlessly and without being influenced by considerations of religion, race, caste, community, language or any inducement.

*Chandigarh, January 25:-* The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh will felicitate six Market Welfare Associations (MWAs) during the Republic Day function for their exceptional performance in the Swachh Bazaar Pratiyogita.

In its mission of Swachh Chandigarh, a Swachh Bazaar Pratiyogita was conducted by Municipal Corporation which aimed to further Swachhta (cleanliness) by encouraging clean and eco-friendly celebrations during the Swachh Diwali Shubh Diwali campaign held from November 6th to 12th, 2023. The competition sought to assess the level of Swachhta in various markets and acknowledge the efforts of MWAs in promoting cleanliness and sustainable practices.

A team of assessors evaluated the participating markets on several parameters, including general cleanliness, cleanliness of public toilets, availability and cleanliness of Twin Bins, enforcement of a ban on single-use plastic, presence of key awareness messages, beautification of the market, initiatives to minimize the use of single-use plastic, and the presence of shops selling eco-friendly and local materials/products.

Out of the 19 registered Market Welfare Associations, the following six MWAs demonstrated exemplary commitment to Swachhta and emerged as winners in the Swachh Bazaar Pratiyogita:

*1. First position:*

   – Market Dealers Association Sector 18 D, represented by Sanjay Puri

   – Bright Traders Welfare Association Sector 23 C, represented by Manoj Bajaj

   – Shopkeeper Association Kiran Block Sector 22 D, represented by Parveen Duggal Vishu

*2. Second Position:*

   – Market Welfare Association Sector 46 C, represented by Balwinder Singh

*3. Third Position:*

   – Market Welfare Association Sector 24 D, represented by Avnish Bansal

   – Traders Welfare Association of Sector 21, represented by RL Bajaj

Municipal Commissioner Ms.Anindita Mitra, IAS said that these MWAs have set a shining example of dedication and innovation in creating clean and sustainable marketplaces. Their initiatives have made significant contributions to waste management, plastic waste reduction, community awareness, and the promotion of local and eco-friendly products.

She further added that , 

In recognition of their outstanding efforts, the first-place MWA has also been nominated and selected for State Awards on January 26th, 2024. The second and third-place holders, along with the honorable mentions, will be felicitated during the Republic Day celebrations at the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

She added that the Municipal Corporation  expresses gratitude to all the participants for their active involvement in the Swachh Bazaar Pratiyogita. These collective efforts reinforce the commitment to achieve a cleaner, greener, and sustainable Chandigarh.

*Chandigarh, January 24:-* On the occasion of National Girl Child Day, the MC Chandigarh recognized and honored  girls from the city for their exceptional contribution towards promoting Swachhata practices like RRR, Home Composting, Segregation of Waste and refusing to use banned plastics and fostering community growth. MC Commissioner Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS acknowledged their outstanding efforts and achievements by felicitating them with a gesture of appreciation –  certificates and a handmade gift crafted made by Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

The Commissioner said that the remarkable dedication and commitment shown by these young girls in promoting cleanliness and sustainability in their communities is truly inspiring. Their efforts are invaluable in creating a cleaner and greener future for Chandigarh, and they serve as role models for others to actively participate in the Swachhata movement.

These young girls  boundless creativity has been demonstrated through their remarkable ability to transform waste materials into valuable products, actively promoting the principles of recycling and upcycling. 

With the unwavering support of MC Chandigarh, they have taken charge of disposing plastic waste in their respective areas, effectively ensuring a pristine and untainted environment for their communities. These visionary individuals have spearheaded pioneering waste segregation initiatives, paving the way for a future that is both cleaner and greener, while their tireless efforts in organizing cleanliness awareness drives near school campuses, engaging in captivating wall beautification projects, and actively participating in the creation of cloth bags as sustainable alternatives to plastic have collectively contributed to visually stunning and environmentally conscious surroundings.

In their pivotal roles as advocates for waste segregation, they have instigated a significant shift in behaviour, influencing others to shun single-use plastics and embrace the practice of waste categorization.

By actively engaging in home composting, they have made substantial strides in reducing waste and promoting practices that are ecologically sustainable. Through their well-executed awareness campaigns on the significance of cleanliness and sanitation, their participation in slogan writing activities aimed at conserving paper and safeguarding the environment, and their skillful choreography of street plays to raise awareness among their neighbors, they have effectively nurtured a heightened sense of consciousness within their communities. 

Additionally, their involvement in home composting and leadership in plantation drives have played an instrumental role in creating a more verdant and sustainable environment.
