Oxford University Press India in collaboration with Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized a workshop on ‘How to prepare for NTA UGC-NET’. The workshop was led by Ms. Harpreet Kaur, author of NTA UGC-NET Paper I (English) that covers the latest 2019 NET syllabus. Over 150 students attended the workshop that introduced them to the tips & tricks to crack the exam. The students also got an opportunity to interact with the author during an engaging Q&A session post the workshop.

Department of SAIF/CIL/UCIM, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized its 3rdannual Alumni Meet ACES-19- an evocative event that marked the homecoming, celebration and unparalleled joy of communion with the Alma Mater, at Panjab University today. The department, known for its state of the art high end instrument facilities, organized a number of activities this year, the GrandAlumni Meet being one of the more prestigious events. The meet witnessed morethan 100 present and old staff and students from various batches coming together to celebrate and share experiences. The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp, followed by the welcome address of Prof. S.K.Mehta, Director, highlighting the major achievements of the department. He informed the alumni that there is tremendous increase in the facilities for the users during this year. Former Directors of the Department Prof. Akhtar Mahmood, Prof. J.B. Singh and Prof. Rupinder Tewari also graced the occasion. Participants enjoyed various indoor games organised by the department. The oldest alumnus retired in year 2000 was honoured.

The Vice President of India, Shri. M. Venkaiah Naidu said today that the youth of our nation must shoulder the greater social responsibility of exercising judgement in looking at social issues. He urged them to adhere to the traditions of tolerance and respect and protect our pluralistic culture.
He was addressing the 68th Annual Convocation of Panjab University of which he is the Chancellor, in Chandigarh today. Shri.Naidu said that Panjab University had a glorious past and is one of the oldest Universities in India, set in a land which has witnessed centuries of civilisation & dedication to spreading knowledge in ancient centres of learning like Takshila.
He expressed his happiness at the [UTF-8?]University’s relentless quest for academic excellence and the rapid progress it has made in providing quality education to its 15000 students enrolled in about 200 affiliated colleges, 3 regional centers, 6constituent colleges and one rural center.
The Vice President congratulated Panjab University for having secured the 34th position among all academic institutions in the nation, in the recent rankings under the National Institutional Ranking Framework. He also applauded the [UTF-8?]University’s focused effortstowards cultivating innovation and entrepreneurship among students. Iam very happy that the University has been recognized by the UGC asthe University with potential for excellence in Biomedical Sciences with facilities for stem cell Research and Drug development, he added.
The Vice President opined that Institution building is not an easy task and added that it requires vision, passion, competence, commitment, dedicated hard work and the ability to tap into the infinite potential within individuals and a network of institutions. He urged all stake holders of the Panjab University to keep up the momentum of their good work and not let complacency set in.
Shri. Naidu affirmed that India of the future would be powered by the dreams and ambitions, the character and competence of young people. He stated that we will be able to fully realize the vast demographic dividend in the years to come only if we can empower our youth with the right skills and attitudes.
The Vice President proposed that we must rethink and re-orient our educational system in the context of the twenty first century when the concerns of ecology, of human welfare and the welfare of the planet are equally imperative. It is possible only if we turn our system around, including aspects of curriculum and evaluation, towards critical thinking, he said.
Observing that access to higher education has been improved considerably in our country, Shri. Naidu said that we have to focus upon raising the quality of education and ensuring that we offer the best possible education to our young people.
The Vice President suggested that we have to have institutions which are continuously nourished by five important streams of inquisitiveness, innovation, ethos that inspire inspiration, integration which encourages inter-disciplinary and collaborative learning and an internalized value system, just like Panjab which is irrigated by 5 rivers
Shri Naidu also urged the youth of the nation to use the means of communication that technology has provided, responsibly. He emphasized that these modern means of communication must be used to facilitate social harmony and to cultivate a culture of healthy and civilized discussion on many of the pressing problems such as class and gender inequalities and the needs of the less privileged in society. We need to address these problems with empathy and sincerity, he added.
The Vice President also extended felicitations to Dr. K. Sivan, the Chairman of ISRO and one of our [UTF-8?]country’s foremost space scientists who was being honored by Panjab University with the Vigyan Ratna Award. Dr. [UTF-8?]Sivan’s outstanding work is an eloquent testimony of [UTF-8?]India’s extraordinary capability in space science and technology, he said.
On the occasion, [UTF-8?]Hon’ble Chancellor, PU and Vice President of India, Shri. M. Venkaiah Naidu conferred Vigyan Ratna Award to Dr. K.Sivan, Chairman, ISRO and Secretary, Department of Space, Bangalore.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU in his address said Panjab University remains a leader in its contribution towards preparing the best minds in the service of the country by producing outstanding scientist & academicians, jurists, philosophers, writers, great statesmen, leaders, industrialists, and social workers. Imparting education to thousands of students every year through its vast campus, affiliated colleges, regional and rural centers, the University is playing a significant role in fulfilling the dream of [UTF-8?]‘shikshit bharat, sashakt [UTF-8?]bharat.’
He further added that the University has expanded its influence by 100+ functional MoUs globally. During the financial year 2018-19, agencies such as the UGC, DST, GOI and ICMR have granted funding to 60+ projects worth more than Rs 21 crore. He informed that the University has taken lead in strengthening Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) and a gallery of over 50+ deliverables to bring all researches, patents and products on one common platform is underway. This will showcase the contribution of not only Panjab University but also of all research institutes of the region while providing impetus to entrepreneurship and innovation capabilities.

Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instruction and Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Prof. Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examination, Sh. Vikram Nayyar, Finance & Development Officer, former Vice Chancellors, PU fellows, faculty members and its affiliated colleges, PU Alumni, Ph.D holders, Post Graduates and Graduates were also present on the occasion.
PU Ph.D. Degree awardees were from three other countries like Iran, Mayanmar and , Thailand and 16 States of India. Punjab with 200 Doctorates led the tally of eligible Ph.D. degree awardees among the states followed by UT, Chandigarh with 88, Haryana with 73 and Himachal Pradesh with 65 students.
There were total 863 number of students bestowed with degrees out of which 235 were males and 628 females. 491 students were given Ph.D Degrees and 372 other than Ph.D. However, there were 291 number of students awarded with Merit certificates, medals and cash prizes.

Special Lecture on “Conflict Resolution with special reference to Jammu & Kashmir” by Lt. Gen J S Cheema at the DDNSS, PU
The Department of Defence and National Security Studies Panjab University, Chandigarh organised a special lecture on the theme “Conflict Resolution: Jammu & Kashmir” by Lt. Gen J. S. Cheema (Retd.), here today.
Lt. Gen. J.S. Cheema, has retired as Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information System and Training). Prior to that, he was Director General of Infantry in Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence. Gen Cheema started the lecture by defining the nature and root causes of conflict in general. He said that the important aspect for any conflict to sustain is the perception of a just cause and the popular support is very- very essential ingredient in sustaining the conflict as it depends upon the cause of it. And combined with that, if there are internal weaknesses in our own handling of a particular situation, then this may further lead to sustaining a conflict. While explaining the cause of conflict in Jammu and Kashmir he discussed in detail all the successive events that happened in Jammu and Kashmir during Independence of India. Whether it is instrument of accession or plebiscite in the state, these are the root causes of the conflict in Jammu and Kashmir. Under part 21 of the Constitution of India, which deals with “Temporary, Transitional and Special Provisions”, the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been accorded special status under “Article 370”. These Articles, whether it is “Article 370” or ‘Article 35 A” they should be diluted.
Lt. Gen. explained in detail the Insurgency and Terrorism prevailing in the state are also the main causes of conflict in Jammu and Kashmir. While talking about the role security forces, he highlighted that Conflict Resolution has political causes, so when the security forces get involved into the conflict, it is not the purpose, neither it is possible for the security forces to resolve a conflict, but it is their responsibility to manage it to such a level where the political process could take place. He added that for any insurgency situation there are two important aspect to sustain one is the level of violence other is the popular support.
He explained the three levels of violence and popular support. In the first level violence is low and popular support is also low, in the second stage there is low violence and high popular support. At the next level low violence goes to medium violence and medium violence goes to high violence. So at the third stage level of violence is very high and the popular support is also on the highest level of conflict and this is like civil war situation. By giving the example of situation in Jammu and Kashmir in 1990s, he added that insurgency in the state erupted in those years because the violence level was very low but the support was very very high and this was the time when the movement was led by local terrorist. Later on there was the involvement of foreign terrorists grow rapidly.
He also highlighted in detail about the number of causalities happened in Jammu and Kashmir from 1948 to till date which saw the tremendous rise since 1990’s.
While talking about India –Pakistan1965 war he said that one of the causes of that war was the India’s successful integration of Jammu and Kashmir in the Union of India. He said that a state can be normal only when the Law and Order of the state are controlled by the local police and without the support of Central reserved forces.
Lastly he concluded his lecture by saying that “the level of violence in Jammu & Kashmir may go up or may go down but the aazadi sentiment may continue remain in the psyche of Kashmiri people.
The lecture was attended by members of various faculty members, serving and retired armed forces officers pursuing various courses in the department, research scholars and students. The lecture was followed by a questions and answers session with the audience.

Panjab University is conducting Common Entrance Test – 2019 for admission to Undergraduate courses on Tuesday, 30th April, 2019. The timings of the test are from 9.00 am to 3.30 pm. About 9500 candidates will appear in this test. Total 30 examination centres have been created. Two centres are created in the Panjab University Campus, Sector 14, twenty two centres are created in local colleges at Chandigarh and six centres are created in Punjab i.e. two centres each at Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana and Sri Muktsar Sahib. For the first time the University has created centres outside Chandigarh to facilitate the candidates who commute from Punjab.

Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized Alumni Meet Programme along with Prize Distribution Function, here today.
Prof. Jaspal Kaur Kaang, Academic Incharge of the Department informed that welcomed the Guests and Alumni of the Department who came from the various places to join Alumni function. She stated that Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies established in 1970 in pursuance of a scheme of the Punjab Govt. and University Grants Commission to set up Guru Nanak Chairs at some universities of India in commemoration of the Birth-Quincentenary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1970. The Panjab University was the first to establish such a Chair for study and research. Prof. Gurbachan Singh Talib was the founder head of the Department and the legacy continued with the prominent scholars Prof. H.S. Shan, Prof. Darshan Singh (Professor Emeritus), Prof. N.K Oberio, Prof. Santosh Sharma, and Prof. Jaspal Kaur Kaang. The chair has now enlarged its scope by starting MA Course in Comparative Study of Religion from 2016. She also shared the information that 75 scholars have received Ph. D degrees from the Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies till yet. On this convocation (28.04.2019) 05 scholars are also taking Ph. D degree and one student taking gold medal for achieving 1st Position in the University.
The prominent Alumni who attended the function included Prof. S.S. The Department of Public Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a workshop on “Team Building and Leadership” under the aegis of the Govt. of India Project “Concurrent Evaluation and Monitoring of Implementation of National Food Security Act 2013”, here today. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Krishna Mohan, I.A.S. (Retd), former Additional Chief Secretary & Financial Commissioner, Revenue, Government of Haryana.
The objective of the workshop was to make the participants understand the concept of team work and leadership and strengthen personal skills. According to Mr. Krishna Mohan cohesive team performance is a means through which many organizations thrive. Individuals who have varying skills, contrasting personalities and different responsibilities need to come together and develop interpersonal skills. He narrated a number of anecdotes and stories from the corporate world, mythology and real life to engage participants. A number of exercises for self assessment were also administered to showcase different social styles.
40 participants enthusiastically attended the workshop.

NSS, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized its Prize distribution function, here today, in which Prof Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instructions was the Chief Guest. Dr Bikram Rana, State Liasion Officer, was the Guest of honour.
Around 40 students were awarded with the Rising Star of the Year Award and Best Volunteer of the year Award. 25 volunteers were awarded with Swachhta Ambassadors Award. Whereas 270 students were awarded with the Swachh Bharat Summer Internship certificates for contributing atleast 100 hours by doing various Swachhta activities in different villages during last June and July 2018.
4 Colleges each from Chandigarh and Punjab were awarded for doing exceptional work. The Colleges from Chandigarh included Post Graduate Govt College, Sector 11, Dev Samaj college of Education, Sector 36, MCM DAV College, Sector 36 and DAV College Sector 10, Chandigarh.
From Punjab the colleges included Gobindgarh Public College, Khanna, DAV College for women, Ferozepur, GGD College of Education, Gidderbaha and Dashmesh college, Mukerian.
Dr Navdeep Sharma, read the annual report and Dr Gaurav Gaur coordinated and anchored the event.

The Department-cum-Centre for Women’s Studies and Development and Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a special lecture on the theme ‘Gender Equality and Justice in 21st Century: Prospects and Challenges’ by Smt. Rekha Sharma Chairperson, National Commission for Women, New Delhi.
Rekha Sharma, Chairperson, National Commission for Women, discussed about the various problems and challenges faced by women in 21st Century and the biggest challenges mindset of society which needs to be changed from own family. She said that even in today’s time there are fewer opportunities to women in comparison to men. She emphasized that there is a need to provide equal opportunity to uplift the status of women. It is very important for women to earn and become financially secure and also be aware of their legal rights. While talking about Gender we should always emphasize on equal opportunities as Gender Justice means removing the discrimination based on gender. She also stressed that women are 50 percent of the total population and we are still struggling for 33 per cent reservation. There is a need to have a proactive and protective mechanism to protect the rights of the women and to provide them with the equal opportunities. She urged the youngsters to become aware of the women issues and to spread it too.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh, while quoting various scriptures, discussed how women were held at high position and were respected and worshipped as goddesses. He further said that this narrative has changed in 21st Century where women face numerous challenges. Although the law provides equal rights and opportunities to both men and women, but in reality, the situation is different. He emphasised the empowerment of women must begun at the family level and it will automatically lead to a change in the mindset of the society.
Dr. Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties emphasized that we are already in 21st century and it is high time that we should have a society with equality and justice for both the genders in the society. She further stated that such interactive sessions must be held regularly to bring change in the mindset.
Dr. Rajesh K. Chander, Chairperson, Department-cum-Centre for Women’s Studies and Development emphasized that there is a need for multipronged strategy to change the mindset so that we have a gender equal and inclusive society. He stressed that the students must play a proactive role to bring change in the society.
The session ended with active participation of the audience by asking questions related to the theme of the lecture. The session was attended by senior officials, Chairpersons, Directors, faculty members, research scholars and students from diverse faculties of the University.

One of the Big Four Accounting Companies of the world, KPMG offered package of 4.99 lakhs per annum along with medical benefits to five students of University Institute of Legal Studies(UILS), Panjab University Chandigarh as a part of its Annual Placement Drive Negotium 2019 which was organized by the Career Development Cell, UILS. Out of 17 students shortlisted, 5 were offered the job.
It is a glorious moment for the department as KPMG has been coming to the campus for three consecutive years now. The Managing Partner, of KPMG Mr Atul Gandhi interacted with the students who were shortlisted on the basis of their CVs. The opening speech was an enlightening and invigorating one where he explained the outreach and work of the company. The Manager, Ms Saudamini Shrotiya highlighted the nuanced legal work undertaken by the company out of which Fraud and Forensic Analysis was the most important and gave an overview of the multifarious nature of dealings with the other companies.
The HR Ms. Samta Jain gave the aspirants an insight into the corporate work and multi cultural atmosphere of the company, nature of work, the transformative nature of life at KPMG and what qualities does the company look for in the candidates during the recruitment process. The company highlighted the remarkable progress of the students who were recruited from UILS last year.
