Vice-Chancellor Statement

Chandigarh July 30, 2019


1.      With a deep sense of sorrow, I may inform the honourable members of the Syndicate about the sad demise of:
i)      S. Balwant Singh Grewal, father of Prof.  Ramanjit K. Johal, Dept. of Public Administration on 25th July, 2019
ii)     Smt. Kaushalya Paresh, mother of Dr. Latika Sharma, Dept. of Education on 25th July, 2019  (To pay homage to the departed souls, two minutes silence, all standing, may be observed).

2.      I am pleased to inform the honourable members of the Syndicate that:
(i)     Prof. Sudhir Kumar, Department of Evening Studies-Multidisciplinary Research Centre, P.U., has been nominated as a member of the School of Literature/Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies at prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi 
Vishwa Vidyalaya, Wardha.
(ii)    The UIPS has brought laurels to the University as follows:
(a)     Ms. Ranjot Kaur, Research Scholar, under the guidance of Prof. Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, UIPS, has prepared anti-bacterial and anti-fungal medicine for the treatment of lung infection.
(b)     Prof. B.S. Bhoop, UIPS, was specially included in a Committee formed under the Drug Controller General of India to make changes in the old Drug and Cosmetics Act.
(c)     Prof. Indu Pal Kaur, UIPS, has secured Rs. 5.5 crore funding from government agencies and Rs. 77 lakh from industrial consultancies.

(iii)   Prof. Seema Kapoor, UICET has been selected for Distinguished Faculty in Engineering Award in 5th Faculty Awards-VIFA 2019.
(iv)    The students of University have brought laurels for the University as follows:
(a)     Nina Chandel, student of MCA, Panjab University won the BRONZE MEDAL in 10 Mtr. Air Rifle Women Team Event at 30th SUMMER UNIVERSIADE – 2019, held at Napoli, Italy from 3rd to 14th July 2019.
(b)     Five students namely Priyanka Kairon, Aayush Gupta, Navjot Kaur Sandhu, Varinder Singh Khosa and Karan Singh Sandhu of the IAS Coaching Centre, P.U., have been selected as PCS Executive Officers. 
(c)     10 students of UILS have been selected as Metropolitan Magistrates in the Delhi Judicial Services Exam 2019. 
(d)     Five research scholars from the Department of English & Cultural Studies have been selected by the HPSC-AP recruitment 2019.
(e)     A record number of students from different departments have cleared UGC NET/JRF exam this year. 
It is indeed a matter of pride for the University to see their students shining.

(v)     Dr. Rohit Sharma, Chairperson, Department of Microbial Biotechnology, P.U., was successfully granted a patent entitled ‘Lipase/esterase-catalyzed synthesis of alkyl esters by transesterification (2019)’ for a term of 20 years in accordance with the provisions of the Patent Act, 1970
(vi)    Department of Geography, P.U., has been awarded a prestigious collaborative research project titled ‘Capacity Building for Policy and Planning in Kenya, Tanzania and India. The project carries an award of CAN $2,98,000. Under this project, four students will visit Canada for three months each over two years starting from Sept., 2019 until Summer 2021. 
(vii)   As many as 34,369 candidates registered for admission in various courses for 5311 (approx.) seats in P.U. till the last day for online registration process i.e. 10th July, 2019.
(viii)  A team of six students from UIET, won the 1st Prize in the Smart India Hackathon 2019 – Hardware Edition held at IIT Hyderabad from July 8 to 12. They were awarded a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/-.
(ix)    Prof. Deepti Gupta, Department of English & Cultural Studies, has been selected by USIEF for Fulbright-Nehru Award Programme from Oct. 5-19, 2019 in the United States.

NTU team visits PU

Chandigarh July 30, 2019 

 Panjab University has a thriving MoU with Nottingham Trent University, UK where both the Universities are partnering in various fields. To take this collaboration further Professor Cillian Ryan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and Ms. Vidhi Sahae, Regional Partnerships Coordinator (South Asia, ASEAN and Australia), Nottingham Trent University (NTU) visited Panjab University, here today and met Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Prof Kumar had initiated discussion on some themes of common interest during his visit to NTU, UK last month. He stressed the need for establishing linkages through research projects, faculty exchange, sharing of knowledge and material resources and envisaged a sustainable long term relationship between the two institutions. 

 Prof Rayan expressed an interest in the following areas: Connections with NTU’s new Enterprise and Innovation Centre, collaboration in the area of Yoga and Meditation, sports engagement in Hockey, Research partnership in Science and 
Engineering, cancer research, bio medical sciences, pharmacology, forensic sciences, law, fashion technology etc.

They appreciated the Student Mobility programs with PU, being coordinated by Professor Nandita Singh, Dean International Students, in which Students from University Institute of Applied Management Sciences and University Institute of Legal Studies are attending 2019 Global Summer School at NTU and students from NTU will be visiting Panjab University in September, 2019, and looked forward to more such programs in future. 

 Faculty from various departments was invited to interact and propose interdisciplinary themes.

MCC tree plantation drive in Sector 42

Chandigarh, July 29:-

 Sh. Shashank Aanand, SSP, Traffic, Chandigarh and Sh. Hardeep Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor and area councillor today started the tree plantation drive at park in Sector 42, Chandigarh, in the presence office bearers of resident welfare association and local residents of area.

They planted saplings of medicinal plants, ornamental shrubs and fruit bearing trees in the park. The Senior Deputy Mayor asked the concerned engineers of Horticulture wing, MCC to provide proper safeguards to the plants and their proper upkeep.

मौसम विभाग के अनुसार अगले 72 घंटों में तेज बारिश होने के आसार हैं।

चंडीगढ़:

 पश्चिमोत्तर क्षेत्र में पिछले चौबीस घंटों में हल्की बारिश हुई तथा अगले 72 घंटों में हल्की से औसत बारिश होने के आसार हैं।

मौसम केन्द्र के अनुसार अगले तीन दिन कहीं कहीं भारी बारिश होने तथा कुछ स्थानों पर हल्की बारिश होने की संभावना है। 31 जुलाई से मानसूनी गतिविधियों के जोर पकड़ने की संभावना है।

चंडीगढ में 12 मिमी , अंबाला पांच , हिसार एक , करनाल 28 मिमी ,नारनौल नौ , भिवानी एक ,सिरसा सात मिमी , लुधियाना 15 मिमी, पटियाला आठ मिमी, हलवारा 22 मिमी सहित कुछ स्थानों पर हल्की बारिश हुई जिससे पारे में कुछ गिरावट आयी।

क्षेत्र में पारा 22 डिग्री से 26 डिग्री के बीच रहा। दिल्ली में हल्की बारिश हुई तथा पारा 25 डिग्री रहा 1 श्रीनगर 18 डिग्री तथा जम्मू में 51 मिमी वर्षा तथा 24 डिग्री पारा रहा।

हिमाचल प्रदेश में पिछले 24 घंटों में अनेक स्थानों पर बारिश हुई। शिमला में 40 मिमी , मंडी 14 मिमी , धर्मशाला 30 मिमी , मनाली आठ मिमी , सोलन 18 मिमी सहित कुछ स्थानों पर बारिश हुई जिससे पारा 17 डिग्री से 23 डिग्री के बीच रहा।

Hockey legend Ajit Pal leads Run for awareness organised by GI Rendezvous on World Hepatitis Day

Chandigarh, July 28:

Hockey legend Ajit Pal leads Run for awareness organised by GI Rendezvous on World Hepatitis Day

People from all across tricity participate in hordes highlighting awareness on health issues

GI Rendezvous, a group of healthcare professionals who got together to bring about academic and health awareness activities amongst medicos and general population, organised an event titled ‘Run for Awareness’ highlighting World Hepatitis Day commemorated globally on 28th of July every year by World Health Organisation.

This year’s theme, “Find the missing millions” was though aptly highlighted by Dr. R. K. Dhiman, Prof. and Head of Hepatology, PGIMER and Chairman National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme, he also shared his thoughts regarding protecting the liver and eliminating Hepatitis, to an audience of about 300 people most of them being  ‘runners’ at Sukhna Lake and appreciated their efforts to help create awareness.

On the occasion, Padma Shri Hockey Olympian Ajit Pal Singh, the famous 1975 World Cup Winner Hockey Captain was especially in town to flag off the run. He added to Dr. Dhiman’s words by saying that liver is a vital organ and it’s well being means overall robust health of a person. The participants were seen jostling to take pictures with the hockey legend. He shared 1975 World Cup moments with children and motivated them.

Mr. K. K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner Municipal Corporation and Sports Secretary, Chandigarh felicitated the two distinguished guests and said it was a great honour to be present at such an event. He further added that the Municipal Corporation supported the event to create awareness amongst masses with regard to keeping oneself fit and healthy.

On the GI Rendezvous Conveners,  Dr. Gurbilas P. Singh and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sodhi said that they were overwhelmed to see a number of their medical colleagues from different streams and from different hospitals of tricity participating in the event with great enthusiasm along with many others from Chandigarh Runners and IndusInd Bank Runners who had come from as far as Karnal. Team GI Rendezvous said that they had been commemorating the World Hepatitis Day for the last 3 years throughout Punjab, but the enthusiasm and dedication shown by tricity is immense.

It is worth mentioning that the treatment of Hepatitis C which used to run in lakhs of rupees has been provided free to all since 2016 in Punjab followed by Haryana and the model is now famous as the Punjab Model developed by Dr. R. K. Dhiman and his team in PGIMER. The model is now being replicated in other states and Dr. Dhiman informed that Maharashtra is doing this from today onwards.          

The NCC cadets from Guru Nanak school were there to assist for the event. Others present were, Olympian Gurdish Pal Singh, Punjabi singer Hardeep, Sukhjeet Lehal, Dr. Jaspreet Singh Batth Ranvir Singh Rana, Dr. Suvir Gupta (Laparoscopic Surgeon from General Hospital Sector 16, Chandigarh) and Deepak Sharma.

एक निरंकार प्रभु की जानकारी जीवन रहते इंसानी जीवन में ही संभव है और भक्त हमेशा अपने जीवन को स्थिर करके चलता है । जीवन भर शुक्राना करता हुआ आप भी शीतल रहता है और दूसरों को भी शीतलता प्रदान करता है।

निरंकारी सतगुरु माता सुदीक्षा जी महाराज

यह प्रवचन निरंकारी सतगुरू माता सुदीक्षा जी महाराज ने मनटोवा (इटली) में हुए एक विशाल संत समागम दौरान कहे। सतगुरू माता जी ने आगे कहा कि मनुष्य को ब्रrा ज्ञान की प्राप्ति के बाद निरंकार प्रभु की जानकारी हो जाती है तो मनुष्य में मानव कल्याण के भाव सहज ही प्रकट होने लग जाते हैं, उस की जुबान में से कड़वे बोल खत्म होने लगते हैं, जीवन में प्यार, विनम्रता, सहनशीलता जैसे दैवी गुण आने शुरू हो जाते हैं। दूसरों प्रति नफरत के भाव खत्म होने शुरू होते हैं तथा साथ ही के साथ अज्ञानता के अंधेरों से मनुष्य निकलने लगता है और धीरे धीरे सहज अवस्था को प्राप्त करता है।

वह अपने जीवन में गुरसिखी को पहल देता है अपने जिंदगी के हर एक पड़ाव में अपने आप को स्थिर रखता है चाहे किसी भी तरह का समय क्यों न आ जाए उस में शुकुराने की भावना अव्वल होती है वह इस फानी दुनिया में इस निरंकार प्रभु की तरफ से मिली जिम्मेदारी को बखूबी निभाता है और अपने जीवन को सतगुरू के अनुसार ढालते हुआ कर्म क्षेत्र में अपने कदम आगे बढ़ाता है जिस कारण वह दूसरों के लिए एक मिसाल बनता है।

उन्होंने आगे फरमाया कि जब गुरसिख प्यार, विनम्रता और सहनशीलता वाली सोच को लेकर चलता है तो उस के अंदर सरबहित के भले की भावना का विकास होता है । वह निरंकार प्रभु की तरफ से बख्शी हर एक चीज का बखूबी आनंद लेता है । गुरसिख अपने आप को भी शीतल रखता है और दूसरों को शीतलता प्रदान करता है और इंसानी कदरों कीमतों को अपने जीवन में लाता है और सतगुरू के संदेश को जन जन तक पहुँचाने का यत्न करता है और सुंदर भावों के साथ ही हर एक के मन को जीतता है जिस कारण उस के जीवन में खूबसूरत बनता है। उन्होंने कहा कि गुरसिख के जीवन में निरंकार प्रभु का अहम रोल होता है।

MCC tree plantation drive in Sector 19

Chandigarh, July 27:- 

Sh. Deepak Yadav, DSP, Chandigarh today started the tree plantation drive at park near Sita Ram Mandir, Sector 19 C, Chandigarh, in the presence of Smt. Asha Jaswal, area councillor Ward No. 4 and  local residents of area and officers of MCC.

 The engineers of Horticulture wing of MCC provided proper safeguard to the newly planted saplings besides creating proper watering arrangement to the plants.

Special Screening of the movie “Uri: The Surgical Strike” at PU

Chandigarh: 

 In pursuance with the national endeavour to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Panjab University (PU) is organising various activities in the Campus. In this regard Department of Defence and National Security Studies, in collaboration with the Dean Student Welfare (DSW) Office organised a Special Screening of the movie “Uri: The Surgical Strike” at the Evening Department Auditorium starting here today.

Professor Amrik Singh Ahluwalia, Department of Botany, PU was the Chief Guest at the function. The screening was also attended by Prof Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare, PU; Dr Jaskaran Singh Waraich, Chairperson,Department of Defence and National Security Studies; Dr Kuldeep Singh, Chairperson, Department of Police Administration and Dr Bharat, Warden, Boys Hostel 4, PU. Research scholars and students from various departments of the University were
present at the screening.

Summer school on Renewable Energy concludes at PU

Chandigarh:

The Valedictory function of Joint International Summer school on Renewable Energy, organized in collaboration of Dr. S. S. Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology Panjab University Chandigarh  and Stony Brook University, New York, USA under the aegis of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP III) was held today.

The program was presided by the Registrar, Panjab University Prof. Karamjeet Singh as Chief Guest and Guest of Honor Prof. Nandita Shukla Singh, Dean international students, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

 The summer school included students from both the Universities and Dibrugarh University Institute of Engineering and Technology (DUIET), Assam. The students during the three week program (8th -26th July, 2019) learned about different kinds of renewable energy with visits to  geothermal sites and renewable energy plants.
The program was aimed to enhance practical learning.

Registrar expressed his views on importance of alternate renewable energy sources and urged for promoting such kind of collaborative work.

The program was very much appreciated by the participating students, particularly by the International students of Stony Book University and the students of DUIET.

          Prof. Nandita, Dean International Students congratulated the organisers and participants on successful completion of this program. In her concluding remarks, Prof. Amrit pal Toor, Indian Coordinator highlighted about the various activities held during the three week summer school programme. The program was concluded with certificate
distribution to the participants.
