NSS, Panjab University organized a training Programme on My Bharat Portal to register the NSS Volunteers of 2024-2025. The Programme was organized by Dr. Parveen Goyal, Programme Coordinator, NSS, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The Training was provided by Dr. Sonia Sharma, PO, NSS, and Master Trainer of My Bharat Portal.
The Chief Guest of the event was Smt. Rupinder Kaur, Assistant Director Youth Services, Punjab cum SNO, Punjab. She addressed the Volunteers and told them the importance of NSS, She even appraised them about the NSS State and National awards. 149 Volunteers participated and registered themselves at the My Bharat Portal.

Prof. Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh inaugurated an Alumni Conference Hall and a Skill Development Centre under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyaan (RUSA) grant at the Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh today. While addressing the audience, Prof. Vig emphasized the importance of alumni base as back-force and called upon to associate the Alumni as ‘Professor of Practice’ and ‘Adjunct Faculty’ in the University departments so as to make the students learning more skillful.
Also, PU VC inaugurated the Skill Development Centre in the areas of the Fish Keeping and Apiculture made from the funds received from RUSA to benefit the skilled graduates as per the mandate of NEP-2020.
Dean Alumni Relations Prof. Latika Sharma appreciated the generous donations from alumni of Zoology department in creating a modern facility.
Registrar Prof. Y.P. Verma and RUSA Coordinator, Prof. Rajeev K Puri congratulated and praised the efforts of Chairperson Prof. Y.K. Rawal, Faculty, and Alumni of the Department of Zoology, P.U., Chandigarh for creating this high-tech Alumni Conference Hall equipped with video conferencing facility.
During the event, Prof. Rawal expressed his gratitude to the alumni for their unwavering support to the department for the completion of this venture. Prof. Rawal apprised the guests that all wood-work in the hall was crafted from the old unused furniture and the state of art modern multimedia amenities, furniture has been created from the kind donations of the alumni.
Prof. Sukhbir Kaur, Fellow, P.U., Dean Student Welfare Prof Simrit Kahlon, Associate DSW, Prof Naresh Kumar, Prof. Jayanti Dutta, Director HRDC, and faculty from other departments also attended the event and admired the efforts of its alumni and the department.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Alumni Conference Hall was funded by the cumulative efforts of the alumni of the Department of Zoology. The inaugural programme was held in hybrid mode and various alumnus of the department joined the programme in both offline and online mode.

*Chandigarh, September 16:-* Sh. Kuldeep Kumar, Mayor, Chandigarh today inaugurated renovated Community Centre in Dadumajra colony, here in the presence senior officers of MC Chandigarh and prominent persons of the area.
While addressing the gathering, the Mayor said that this Community Centre has undergone extensive renovations to enhance its functionality and aesthetic appeal at a total expenditure of Rs. 43 lacs.
He said that the comprehensive renovation has addressed these issues, including new false ceiling, upgrading the windows and doors with toughened glass, wall tiling & curtains, acrylic painting, boundary wall railing, renovation of toilet blocks, wiring alongwith other electrical works and plastering work around boundary wall. A new open kitchen has been constructed, allowing it to be used without disturbing ongoing events. All doors have been aesthetically enhanced with teak wood, and the entire building has been made handicapped-friendly, ensuring accessibility for all, added the Mayor.
The Mayor said that the additional upgrades include covering the bathroom walls with ceramic tiles, adding a 3-foot vertical granite cladding to the corridor walls and repainting the entire building. Various repair works have also been completed to done the facility to optimal condition.

*Chandigarh, September 13:* Following the National curtain raiser organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), city Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar presided over the curtain-raising event in the MCC office attended by Joint Commissioner Sh. Gurinder Singh Sodhi and other senior officers of the MC Chandigarh.
This year, the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2024 campaign, themed “Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskaar Swachhata,” will run from September 17 to October 2, 2024. This marks the 10th anniversary of the campaign, which has been observed annually since its inception in 2014 to commemorate the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The campaign focuses on three key pillars:
1. Swachhata Ki Bhagidaari (Public Participation, Awareness, and Advocacy)
3. Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivirs (Preventive Health Checkups and Social Security Coverage)
During the curtain-raising event, Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar stated, “A series of Jan Andolans (people’s movements) along with major events and activities have been planned in alignment with these pillars. We are collaborating with stakeholders including Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs), Market Welfare Associations (MWAs), NGOs, schools, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The focus will be on schools, residential associations, market vendors, the welfare of Safaimitras, and SHGs, ensuring all stakeholders actively contribute to maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings.”
The Mayor also emphasized the importance of achieving the objectives of the “Cleanliness Target Units” (CTUs) through active citizen participation.
Additionally, the campaign will feature large-scale cleanliness drives, innovative initiatives, and community engagement activities, promoting the message of “Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskaar Swachhata”—instilling cleanliness as a habit and a core value while embracing the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR).

In a proactive move towards promoting awareness about Para Legal Volunteering amongst the students, Legal Aid Society, UILS, conducted an informative session in collaboration with the State Legal Services Authority and the District Legal Services Authority. The session was graced by Mr. Surender Kumar, Additional District and Sessions Judge cum Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority and Mr. Sunil Kumar, Chief Judicial Magistrate cum Secretary, District Legal Services Authority.
The session laid emphasis on the evolution of legal aid, its awareness, importance, the eligibility of people who can receive free legal is and the kind of legal services that are to be dispersed. Emphasis on acts like Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 and Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 as well as on ADR Mechanisms like mediation, Lok Adalat was laid to highlight their importance in the sphere of Para Legal Volunteer Awareness. Bisleri International Pvt. Ltd. launched ‘Bottle for Change’ initiative at Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Prof. (Dr.) Renu Vig, Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating, “Instilling sustainable values in our students is crucial, as they are the future leaders who will shape our world. Panjab University is committed to playing a pivotal role in this environmental movement, ensuring that our campus serves as a model of sustainability.”
Key highlights of the event included the MoU signing for establishing on-campus Material Recovery Facility, the launch of the ‘Bench of Dreams’ made from used plastics, and the installation of used plastic collection banks at strategical places of the university to encourage responsible disposal and recycling. An agreement with Esperanza, the recycling partner for Chandigarh and Punjab, was also finalized to ensure collection of used plastic and sending for recycling. The event further marked the flag-off of a vehicle dedicated to regular plastic waste collection within the university & city. Bisleri International also recognized campus partners like Horticulture Department, Enactus, NSS, and Rotaract for their invaluable support of the ‘Bottles for Change’ initiative.
This landmark event, which marks the culmination of a collaborative effort that began in September 2023, includes the signing of an MoU today to develop a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) on campus – a significant step towards sustainability. The event attracted over 300 enthusiastic students who came together to support sustainable practices and recycling efforts on campus.

While addressing the gathering, the Mayor said that this Community Centre has undergone extensive renovations to enhance its functionality and aesthetic appeal at a total expenditure of Rs. 49 lacs. He said that this Community Centre was handed over by the Chandigarh Administration to the Municipal Corporation during the year 2019 merger of 13 villages under the MC’s jurisdiction. At that time, the Community Centre was in poor condition and lacked basic facilities.

*Chandigarh, September 9:* To support the health of its sanitation workers and staff, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has organized a month-long health camp under the “Safai Apnao, Bimaari Bhagao” campaign. This initiative is in collaboration with the TCI Foundation and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCHRC). The health camp supports the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and MCC’s commitment to the welfare of its sanitation workers.
City Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar inaugurated the mega cancer screening camp at the Community Centre, Sector 11, in the presence of Sh. Sachin Galav, area councillor, Joint Commissioner Sh. Gurinder Singh Sodhi, PCS, MOH Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, other senior officers of the civic body, and MCC employees.
Cancer cases are increasing in our society, making early detection and timely treatment essential. This camp provides an important opportunity for cancer screening for our sanitation workers and employees, helping to extend their lives. The camp will also promote healthy lifestyles by raising awareness about the early signs and symptoms of cancer through information and education.

The month-long health camp will screen all sanitation workers involved in garbage collection from households and commercial areas, as well as those working at Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs). Key highlights of the cancer screening camp include Oral Cancer and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) screenings for males and Oral, Breast, and Cervical Cancer screenings for females. The camp also offers free medical check-ups, vaccinations, and healthcare services, including general health examinations, vision tests, dental check-ups, and the distribution of essential medicines.
MCC plans to organize 30 health camps, benefiting over 8,000 employees, irrespective of their employment criteria (Regular, Contractual, Agency, Daily Wage). These camps will be held at various locations, as strategically planned by the sanitation Wing.
Mayor Sh. Kuldeep Kumar commended the sanitation wing’s efforts in organizing an awareness and screening camp. He emphasized that the health and welfare of sanitation workers and MCC staff are top priorities. He reaffirmed that the Municipal Corporation has provided insurance coverage for all garbage collectors and MRF staff, regardless of their employment status.
He also noted that organizing this health camp is a fitting tribute to these unsung heroes and reflects the city’s commitment to its workforce. In 2023, Chandigarh was honored with the ‘Safaimitra Surakshit’ title by Her Excellency, the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Draupadi Murmu. Through initiatives like this, we are dedicated to maintaining that honor and ensuring the well-being of our sanitation workers.
The Mayor expressed gratitude to all garbage collectors, sanitation workers, and MCC staff for their hard work, which has improved waste segregation in the city and achieved 100% collection of segregated waste. Model Senior Secondary School, Village Khuda Ali Sher participated in various competitions, including quizzes, essay writing, poster-making, and slogan writing. More than 400 students took part in these engaging and informative activities.
