PU,VC along with his team interacted with the Faculty and Research Scholars and stressed on promoting entrepreneurial skills among students. He also laid emphasis on developing inter-disciplinary coordination and taking research initiatives across disciplines. He urged them to share their problems for necessary corrective actions. He also enquired about the services of hostels. The VC assured the faculty and Research Scholars of resolving their issues at the earliest.

PU VC felicitates the Team for Smooth Conduct of Online Examinations

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University interacted with the entire team who handled the conduct of Online Examinations. He extended his felicitations for the commendable job of the smooth and successful conduct of examinations.

PU VC encouraged them to upgrade their skills by going for the advanced training and should continue working in the same way for the other jobs of the university.

            The core team responsible for the conduct of examinations included Prof. RK Singla, DCSA,

Prof. Sukhwinder Singh, Director Computer Centre, Prof. Harish Kumar, UIET, Prof. Naveen Aggarwal, UIET, Prof. Ajay Mittal. They were supported by the technical team from The Computer Unit and Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Computer Centre.

Dr. Jagat Bhushan, controller of Examination informed that there were multiple milestones which the team members achieved which included:

1.      Development of the application to download Question Papers and upload Answer Sheets.

2.      Hosting the application on a robust environment to cater more than 1 Lac candidates concurrently to download Question Papers and upload Answer Sheets.

3.      Exploring alternatives for hosting the application on cloud.

4.      Configuration of G-Suite, Google Forms and CDN to ensure the stability of the application.

Mayor flagged off 2nd phase of door to door waste collection through MCC vehicles

Chandigarh, March 1:- Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh today flagged off the 2nd phase of door to door waste collection through MCC vehicles near Mahila Bhawan, Sector 38, Chandigarh in the presence of Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Arun Sood, former Mayor and area councilor, Sh. Sorabh Arora, Joint Commissioner, Dr. Amrit Warring, Medical Officer of Health and other prominent persons of area.

The Mayor said that in order to implementation successful door to door collection of waste separately i.e. wet and dry waste, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has deployed their own vehicles in 1st phase from sector 1 to 30 in the city, which have reduced the problem of mixed garbage collected at garbage plant.

He said that from today onwards the MCC has deployed 70 more vehicles in southern sectors including sectors 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 38 West, 46, 47 and 48 for door to door collection of waste through the use of partitioned vehicles including three separate collection bins for wet, dry and domestic hazardous waste in each vehicle.

While sharing information about the door to door waste collection system through MCC vehicles, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, MCC said that these vehicles will carry the waste from households to the transfer stations, from where the waste is transported to the garbage plant in loaders. All vehicles used in the collection and transportation system are monitored by a GPS enabled tracking system. The GPS system is constantly monitored by the monitoring cell. Any route deviations by particular drivers are penalized and multiple deviations is also grounds for termination, added the Commissioner.

In addition to that 223 more vehicles will be deployed in phased manner on delivery bases throughout the city to collect segregated waste from households.

He said that Chandigarh has been divided into 4 zones and 26 wards. Each ward has on an average 9600 households and commercial establishments of the areas. In Chandigarh, waste is generated from various sources including households, commercial areas and other institutions like RWAs, hospitals, hotels among others. The households or residential complexes are covered by the door to door collection system while the semi bulk and bulk generators are covered by the bulk collection system. With this facility, Chandigarh ensures the 100% coverage of wards through its door to door segregated collection system with deploying all the 390 additional vehicles, added the Commissioner.

49th Rose Festival ends with award ceremony to Corona Warriors of city

Chandigarh, February 28:- The 49th Rose Festival ended with the award ceremony to corona warriors of city here at Rose Garden, Sector 16, Chandigarh.

Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh was the chief guest during the closing ceremony. Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh Siddhu, Senior Deputy Mayor, Smt. Farmila, Deputy Mayor, other councilors and officers of MCC were present during the simple function.

The Mayor said that this year the MCC could not organize various competitions during this Rose festival due to COVID-19 guidelines, while some flower arrangements have been done by the horticulture department, MCC. He said that next year will be the Golden Jubilee of the Rose Festival and will be celebrated with full fervor.

The Commissioner said that MCC has decided to honour all the RWAs, MWAs, NGOs and Councillors of MCC for rendering their best services during the COVID-19 period. He said that these local level organizations supported and helped the citizen of Chandigarh a lot during the COVID period.

The Mayor and Commissioner honoured the representatives of 82 Resident Welfare Associations, 36 NGOs of city and 37 individuals including officials of UT Administration and social workers of city and 230 employees of MCC including Gardeners, Safaikarmacharis and other workers  through their respective Head of Departments during the programme.

Campaign for awareness on Waste Segregation & Plastic Waste Management

Debendra Dalai, IFS ,Member Secretary, CPCC, Director, Environment  flagged off a campaign for awareness on Waste Segregation & Plastic Waste Management at Sukhna Lake, here today.Sh. Sorabh Arora,Joint Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, Dr Amrit Pal Warring, Medical Officer of Health cum Nodal Officer for Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban and other officials of MCC were present during the programme.Cycling & Recycling were the 2 key highlights of the launch event. Cyclists were requested to become the torch bearers of this campaign. “First of its kind” Cycle Canvas bags were given to 300+ cyclists starting 6 am. These bags retrofit seamlessly into the cycle frame and have multiple pockets to help cyclists store items safely & separately while cycling. The quote, “My Chandigarh, My Responsibility” written on these bags brings a sense of ownership among the citizens to manage their waste responsibly by segregating at source. They addressed the audience as leaders of tomorrow and set them on this trajectory by tying the innovative bags on their cycles themselves.

National Science Day by Zoology Deptt,PU

Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated National Science Day on 28th February, 2021 to commemorate Raman Spectra, a scientific contribution of renowned scientist, Sir C.V. Raman. The event was organized in collaboration with Punjab Academy of Sciences, Chandigarh Forum for Science and Technology Communication and Indian Science Congress Association (Patiala Chapter). The theme of National Science Day 2021 was “Innovation on Science and Technology: Impact on Society.”

Dr. Harpreet Kaur ,Chairperson, Department of Zoology welcomed the gathering and the event was presided over by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University. He emphasized on the encouragement of interdisciplinary research, catering between science and humanities. Eminent scientists from various parts of India joined this event and motivated the young researchers. He added that it should not be limited only to the science fraternity but also must have participants from various walks of life. It should encourage scientists, writers, students, and others who are involved in the promotion of science and technology in our daily life. He elaborated how The Government of India’s  draft of 5th National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy for public consultation will  play a crucial role in fostering socio-economic and political development globally, benefitting all the sectors through scientific and technological advances.

Prof. Goverdhan Mehta, presently Emeritus Professor, School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad, former Vice Chancellor, University of Hyderabad, former director IISc Bangalore, former Chairperson NAAC, former president INSA, delivered a very gripping lecture full of motivational quotes and ideas on the topic  “Science, Scientists and Sustainability: Musings on unfolding future.”He talked about the significance of ethics and scientific outlook in science. He defined the traits of a good scientist and added that a scientist should be curious, persistent, courageous, observant and communicative. He said that in the times of ascendency of hype, fake-philia and dichotomania, there has to be a crusade against H-H-F-F, which meant Hype-Hypocrisy- Falsification-Fakery and there is a need to refrain from these factors to safeguard science. He emphasized on a Pro-tip Align Persona to professional demands which would bring humility in science. Lastly, he insisted on searching for the options available in science that can pave the road of the world towards sustainability.

Among the others, panelists present were Prof.P.K.Seth, NASI Senior Scientist, Lucknow, Prof Vijay Laxmi Saxena, General President, Indian Science Congress Association, Prof. I.J.S. Bansal, Founder President, Punjab Academy of Science, Prof. Paramveer Singh, ISCA, Patiyala Chapter and Prof. RC Sobti,former Vice chancellor, Panjab University and Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow and they shared their valuable knowledge and experiences with the budding scientists present on this occasion.

 An e-poster competition was also held on the theme of the event which was judged by Prof. P.K.Seth. Research scholars from various institutes and departments took part in the competition and communicated their innovative ideas with each other. Prof. Sukhbir Kaur, DSW Women, Panjab University and Prof. Sanjeev Puri ,Department of Biotechnology, UIET, Panjab University announced the results of competition and congratulated the participants for their hard work. A cash prize was announced for the winners, Miss Bandu Matiyal and Miss Madhu Sharma from Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh, grabbed first and second prize respectively. Mr. Hemant Sharma from Patanjali Research Institute, Haridwar stood third in e-poster competition. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr.Ravneet Kaur, organizing secretary.

One day online seminar on ‘Emerging trends in Applied Mathematics’

Department of Applied Sciences, University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized one day online seminar on ‘Emerging trends in Applied Mathematics’ on 27 February 2021.

The seminar was organized under twining activity of TEQIP-III in collaboration with Govt. college of Engineering and Technology Jammu under the guidance and  patronage of  Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Prof. J.K. Goswamy, Director UIET, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Dr. Sameru Sharma, Principal, Government College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu.

The purpose of the webinar was to bring together researchers from academia to present, share and discuss their techniques, tools and ideas in the area of Applied mathematics specially in optimization techniques, numerical analysis, mathematical modeling, swarm intelligence.

Around 100 participants from different institutes  within India registered for the seminar.  Experts from IIT, Delhi, NIT Jalandhar, South Asian University and Foundation of Scientific Research and Technological Innovation, Hyderabad delivered talks and highlighted various opportunities available for mathematicians.

During the inaugural session, Prof JK Goswamy, Director, UIET delivered the welcome address and emphasized on the importance of organization of such event.  He also stated that in this pandemic era of COVID-19, the seminar will definitely benefit the young researchers.

Prof. VR Sinha, Dean University Instructions , Panjab University  delivered the inaugural address.  He appreciated the progress of UIET over the years and wished it well on its journey of excellence in interdisciplinary research.

Awareness programme on door to door waste collection at sector 47

Chandigarh, February 27:- An awareness programme on door to door waste collection at source level and to promote segregation of waste was organised at community centre, sector 47, Chandigarh under Swachh Bharat Mission.

Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Municipal Commissioner was the chief guest during the programme which was attended by Sh. Davesh Moudgil, former Mayor and area councilor, Sh. Sorabh Arora, Joint Commissioner, Dr. Amrit Warring, Medical Officer of Health, prominent persons of area, office bearers of Resident Welfare Associations were also present during the programme.

While welcoming all the office bearers of RWAs the Commissioner attributed the success of the clean city and collection of segregated waste from households through MCC vehicles in Chandigarh specially sectors from 1 to 30 to the waste collectors, sanitation staff and citizens of these sectors.

He said that the MCC is going to start this facility in southern sectors from 1st March, 2021 onwards falling sectors 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 38 West, 46, 47 and 48 by deploying nearly 70 vehicles in second phase. He requested all the residents of these sectors to cooperate with the MCC by giving segregated waste i.e. dry and wet waste separately to the MCC waste collectors from 1st March onwards so that the same may be processed technically.

Answering the questions of area residents, the Commissioner assured the residents to run the door to door waste collection through MCC vehicles in proper coordination with area residents in sustainable manner. He said that issues including timing schedule of vehicles for waste collection in the streets, societies will be devised as per the requirement and keeping in view the needs of the residents.

Elaborating about Solid Waste Management system in Chandigarh, Sh. Davesh Moudgil said that the main objective of the programme was to recognize the issues, challenges and to understand the rules and to be aware of the various approaches, technologies to be adopted. He said that to plan to implement confirm solutions in the city and to promote segregation of waste as per Solid Waste Management Rules for implementing the plans was the principal aim of the programme, he added.

Mayor laid foundation stone for replacement of Sewerage System at Maloya Colony

While sharing information about the project, the Mayor said that this project has been prepared for strengthening of sewer lines at Maloya Colony near house No. 3001 to 3709 and other leftout areas of Madrasi Colony, Maloya and rehabilitation colony, Maloya. He said that the sewer lines on backcourt yard of houses are required to be shifted on front side of houses to ensure the smooth flow of sewage in the sewer lines. After conducting detailed survey, the proposal to provide sewerage pipe lines and other alied works has been approved at a cost of Rs. 1.5 crores, added the Mayor.
