Online Principals Meet by HRDC, PU

An online Principals’ Meet on  “Human Resource Development in Higher Education: Collaboration of HRDCs and Institutional Heads” was organised by the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Panjab University Chandigarh today in which 20 Principals and institutional heads from affiliated colleges of PU participated.

            Inaugurating the meet Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor said that human resource is the ultimate resource of a nation and all other resources can be utilised only if the human resources is up to the mark, educated and trained. It is both our duty and necessity to focus our attention and invest in the human resource of our institute.

            Prof. S.K. Tomar, Director, HRDC, Panjab University briefed the participants about the human resource development activities of the centre. He told that in addition to faculty. It also organises programmes for the hostel wardens, researchers, academic administrators, support staff and research scholars also. He said that individuals can achieve their full potential only through hand holding, capacity building and training.

            Dr. Ajay Sharma, Dr. P.S. Gaorcha, Dr. Roshan Lal, Dr. R.S. Jhanji, Dr. Neena S. Pajni institutional heads from colleges in Ludhiana, Jalalabad, Hoshiarpur, Chandigarh spoke on the theme and provided valuable insights.

Second Meeting of High Level Committee held at PU

The second meeting of high level committee of experts headed by Prof. R.P.
Tiwari, Vice Chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda was held today at 
Panjab University in offline mode with all the members present except Prof. V.S.
Chauhan, Chairman, Executive Committee, National Assessment and Accreditation
Council (NAAC]- Nominee of Chairman, UGC Member, who joined through online mode and
Director, (IIM) Amritsar who could not attend the meeting. 


        The members took cognizance of the existing governing structure of PU, its
composition and manner of its Constitution. The members also deliberated on the
governance structure of other prominent institutes like GNDU, Kurukshetra
University, Punjabi University, Delhi University, IIT, IIM etc. The members also
discussed the recommendations made by committees in the past on issue of governance
reforms of PU.


        The committee further discussed that the online portal for receiving inputs
was launched on March 12, 2021 which was to be closed on 19th March, 2021 initially
but extended till 26 March, 2021. In portal, there is a limit of 250 words. It was
decided that in case, someone wants to submit more comprehensive suggestions
exceeding this limit, they can do so by emailing the same to the Registrar, Panjab
University, Chandigarh.

        The committee decided to meet again to examine the suggestions of
stakeholders in the month of April 2021 for deciding future course of action.

28th UGC Networking Resource Centre Training Course at UIPS, PU

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University,
Chandigarh organized a popular talk on “Lets Discover a De-Stress Pill”  by Dr
Ruchita Sah,  Associate Professor & MD (Psychiatry), DM (Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry) and Core Faculty at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and
Research under the aegis of UGC Networking Resource Centre  programme, today.
Dr Ruchita Shah remarked that though stress is universal phenomenal but still an
individual’s response to the challenges, frightening or difficulties. She sensitized
the audience that process of discovering the de-stress pill begins from recognising
the stressors.  She discussed the role of time management, problem solving skills,
positive self-talk, and cognitive re-structuring in the management of stress and
emphasised to practise these general tool and techniques on daily basis to delay the
process of stress. Dr Ruchita made the session more interactive by asking questions
and addressing to queries of the audience during the session.

cordial welcome to all the participants and Course Coordinator introduced the
distinguished Speaker.

Meeting held for Containing Covid in PU Campus

Chandigarh March 23, 2021

Prof VR Sinha, Dean of University Instructions, Panjab University Chandigarh, held an emergent meeting today to discuss the directives issued by the U.T. Chandigarh as well as the Director, Higher Education, Chandigarh regarding the containment of spread of Covid-19.

For Detailed News-

The members unanimously recommended that:

1. The classes will continue in online mode till further orders.  However, the administrative staff of teaching departments and other offices shall continue to attend the office on all working days.

2. The online examination already scheduled shall continue as per the notified date sheet.

3. The A.C. Joshi Library and other departmental libraries shall remain closed till 31.03.2021.

4. No social gatherings including the Holi-Milan shall be held on the University campus till further orders. 

5. To ensure proper Covid-19 compliant behaviour, all gatherings (for whatever reasons) of University staff and students on the campus is banned, except with the prior permission of Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh.

Mayor pays tribute to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on their martyrdom day

Chandigarh, March 23:- City Mayor Ravi Kant Sharma, Sh. Rajesh Gupta, area councillor, Sh. Arun Sood, Sh. Shakti Prakash Devshali, councillors and officers of MCC paid tributes to Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on their martyrdom day at the Martyrs’ Pillar in the Terraced Garden of Sector 33, Chandigarh, on Tuesday. The pillar is a 17’3” high, three-faced pillar and bears names of martyrs, belonging to Chandigarh.

National Pharmacy Teachers Training Programme commences at PU

Chandigarh March 22, 2021

A one-week web faculty training school under the initiative of UGC Networking
Resource Centre (UGC-NRC), on “TOOLS ENABLING DRUG DISCOVERY AND DRUG ANALYSIS IN
PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH” from 22 March to 27 March 2021 was inaugurated today in
online mode at the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab
University Campus, for pharma faculty and researchers across the country by
Professor Tapas K Kundu, Director CSIR – Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow,
Uttar Pradesh.

Professor Tapas K Kundu delivered the Key Note Address on “COVID – Treatment and
Vaccine.” Prof Kundu gave an overview of the different genomic structures
responsible for the mutation & the second peak being encountered presently. He also
discussed the challenges and opportunities in new drug discovery process and
highlighted the potential of drug repurposing in COVID 19 management. He sensitized
the audience and encouraged everyone to get vaccinated while continuing with mask
and social distancing.

Professor V. R. Sinha, Dean of University Instruction, Panjab University, in his
address described about the applications and scope of contemporary drug discovery
tools in pharmaceutical research.

Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson, UIPS and Programme Coordinator, UGC-NRC
welcomed the participants and briefed them about the achievements of UIPS and UGC-
NRC programs. Professor Renu Chadha, Course Coordinator, summarized about the course
content to the participants and Dr Neelima Dhingra, Joint Course Coordinator
conducted the proceedings of the event.

Subsequent sessions included a lecture by Professor Gulshan Kumar Bansal, Department
of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Research, Punjabi University, Patiala on “LC-MS:
A powerful tool in drug discovery and development.” The post-lunch session covered
informative talks by Professor Purnananda Guptasarma, Department of Biological
Sciences, IISER, Mohali on “Analysis of the identity, purity, conformation and
function of therapeutic proteins” and Leveraging In silico Approaches in Drug
discovery process by Dr Neelima Dhingra, Assistant Professor UIPS, Panjab
University, Chandigarh

A total of 35 participants were selected for training, hailing from various
Colleges/Universities, representing 13 different states of India. The training
school intends to apprise the young participants/researchers/ teachers about the
synthetic and analytical techniques adopted in the drug discovery and drug analysis
process; leading computational tools and their use in drug design and development
process and incorporating these tools in research projects.

UIPS is the first and the only Pharmacy Institute in the country selected by MHRD
for creating UGC Networking Resource Centre to promote and foster research and
academics in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences by training young pharma trainers,
selected across the nation.

PU Urges Employees to follow Covid Protocols

 In the wake of recent spike in Covid-19 cases observed in the city, Panjab
University, Chandigarh has issued instructions for all the employees to follow
strictly, the prescribed Covid-19 protocols to prevent the spread of highly
infectious disease, informed Sh. Vikram Nayyar, officiating Registrar, PU. It is
further advised that all the staff members must wear face masks properly, frequent
hand sanitization/washing, maintaining appropriate physical distancing and other
prescribed protocols strictly.

PU Extends date for Inputs from Stakeholders

IGNOU extends Admission up to 31st March, 2021

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date of submission of online Fresh admission of all Masters, Bachelor, Diploma & Certificate programmes up to 31st March, 2021 for the January, 2021 session. Details of the IGNOU academic programmes for the January, 2021 session can be accessed from the link https://ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in/. The prospective learners can apply for Masters/Bachelor/Diploma/Certificate programmes of the University on the official website, informed The Regional Director of IGNOU Regional centre Chandigarh Dr. A.K.Dimri. Last date of submission of ‘online’ admission form for January, session was earlier fixed for 15th March, 2021.

National Defence University (NDU) Development team visited to the Panjab university

Chandigarh March 18, 2021

A six member delegation of National Defence University (NDU) Development team of Nepal visited the Panjab University, Chandigarh on 17th March 2021 which was headed by Lt. Gen. Bala Nanda Sharma (Retd.), Chairman of that University.  The other members of high powered committee were Prof. (Dr.) Shambhu Ram Simkhada, Brig. Gen. Bishu Raut, Joint Secretary Ministry of Defence Krishna Prasad Gnawali. Dr. Jaskaran Singh Waraich, Chairperson, Department of Defence and National Security Studies was the Nodal officer for the conduct of visit of Nepalese delegation.

The purpose and objective of their this visit was to know the management & administration, Act & Regulation incl. the course curricula and conduct of various courses by the university.

The delegation was formally welcomed by Prof. V.R. Sinha, Dean of University Instruction who also apprised delegates about the management & administration of the University and the working of various academic departments being run under the nine faculties of the university as well as the affiliated colleges with the university.  He also assured the full support to the visiting team for the development of University in Nepal.

 The team also discussed the mandate for development of NDU in Nepal and also shared their views while showing their keen interest to visit the departments running various courses on disaster management.

 Prof. Rajesh Gill, Dean Research was also present during the interaction of the team with DUI who further highlighted the significance of various courses on Disaster Management which are being conducted in the Department of Defence and National Security Studies and Department of Geography in  Panjab University.

The team later visited the Department of Defence and National Security Studies wherein the Chairperson Dr. Jaskaran Singh Waraich gave highlights of various courses being run by the department incl. the two P.G. Diplomas in Disaster Management & Security and Homeland Security. Prof. Simrit Kahlon, who was also accompanying the team, briefed the delegation about the peculiarities of governance structure and the rich history, culture and heritage of Panjab University.

Further, the team visited the Department of Geology where Dr. Mahesh gave the presentation on his    research work on in the Himalayan Region of India and also showed the various instruments being used in their studies on seismography.

After visiting Geology department, delegation also went to the department of Geography,  one of the oldest department,  where Dr. Vishwa Bandhu Singh gave presentation about the department and the course content of Master in Disaster Management while also highlighting  the future prospects of the course.

The delegates also had a tour of the University campus which was followed by exchange of mementoes as a token of remembrance .

The NDU development team highly appreciated the academic and research standards of the University especially the Departments they visited on the day. They also expressed their keen interest in developing future academic collaborations with Panjab University.
