Special lecture on ‘Contribution of Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar towards Education for an Egalitarian Society by PU

The SC/ST Cell Panjab University Chandigarh and the Centre for Medical Physics, Panjab University while commemorating the 130th birth anniversary of Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar ,organized a special online lecture on Contribution of Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar towards Education for an Egalitarian Society ,today.

Sh. Vijay Sampla, Chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) remembered the contributions of Dr. Ambedkar who worked tirelessly for the establishment of an egalitarian society. He stressed upon the role of education to uplift the marginalized sections of the society as advised by Babasaheb throughout his life. He cited the role of ancient literature in the development of modern society and also correlated the contributions of Babasaheb in taking India on the path of progress inclusively. He discussed the role of education for the development of modern society by citing the example of Babasaheb.  Sh. Vijay Sampla expressed his commitment towards work in the capacity of a new responsibility as a Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes. He shared his plan to clear approximately 67000 pending cases on priority basis within six months.  He also shared with the participants that the commission has already started an online portal to register different kinds of issues and grievances of the concerned. He appreciated the organizers for the conduct of this webinar to disseminate the ideas of Babasaheb.

The Vice Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar shared his views on the ideas of Dr. Ambedkar and urged that one should explore the managerial skills of Ambedkar towards the development of the society. He added that Babasaheb struggled throughout his life for equality, welfare of humanity and  never gave up.

Earlier, Prof. M. C. Sidhu, Coordinator SC/ST Cell welcomed the guest spekers and the participants of the webinar. Speaking on this occasion, he emphasized on the equal opportunities of education for all.

Dr Naresh Kumar, UIET moderated this special lecture . Dr Vivek Kumar, Chairperson, Centre for Medical Physics introduced the chief patron. Dr Navjot, Deptt. of Political Science introduced the keynote speaker. Dr Kamla,  USOL presented a vote of thanks.

Science Technology and Innovations discussed at PU

Department of Biotechnology, Panjab University Chandigarh in association with  Punjab Academy of Sciences and Indian Science Congress Association Chandigarh Chapter, organized distinguished lecture by Dr Renu Swarup, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology(DBT), Govt Of India, New Delhi.

            Dr Renu Swarup talked about Science Technology and Innovations: Key Drivers for Economic Growth. She elaborated how DBT is leading the country with the theme of discovery, innovation and enterprises and driving the India towards self reliance or Aatamnirbharta.  Through it’s various initiatives towards promoting innovative research, empowering people, building world class infrastructure, supporting public-private partnership, Department has made a huge impact on Indian agriculture, healthcare, industry and environment on one hand, while raising global standing of India in the sphere of biotechnology on the other.

            Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh in his inaugural address, described that the current crisis has provided opportunity to reconsider our lives and reorganize them in a way that has less impact on our planet. People have started thinking differently, re-imagining , taking  action and weaving in a shift towards  better world to adapt with deftness to the ‘Change’, as that’s the only constant in life.

            Earlier, Prof RC Sobti elaborated the theme of lecture and introduced the speaker. Dr VP Kamboj, former director CSIR-CDRI presided over the function.

            The Department through its National Biotechnology Development Strategy announced in 2015, lays major emphasis on generation of biotech products, processes and technologies for enhanced efficiency, productivity and cost-effectiveness in the areas of agriculture, food and nutritional security; affordable health care and wellness; environmental safety; clean energy, biofuel, bio-manufacturing etc. She stressed on continuous effort and engagement of all stakeholders to move forward and  to make India a US$100b Bioeconomy by 2025. In the end, Dr Kashmir Singh, Chairperson proposed vote of thanks.

IAS Center, PU extends Last Date for Application Forms

 The Centre for IAS and other Competitive Examinations, Panjab University, Chandigarh, has extended the Last date of submission of applications forms for the coaching of PCS(Executive), HCS(Executive) and other State Civil Services (Preliminary) Examinations 2021 to 30th April’ 2021. This course is specially suitable for students who are preparing for PCS(Executive), HCS(Executive) and other State Civil Services Executive Examinations. The course shall be covering the topics related to the Executive Examination of State Civil Services.

            The distinguished faculty from Panjab University and other neighbouring Universities and Colleges having immense experience shall be roped in to teach this course. The classes for this course shall be commencing 3rd May’ 2021 onwards.  The admission for this batch will be on First Come First Serve basis. The Centre runs many other courses for preparation of competitive examinations like UPSC Civil Services (Preliminary), PCS(Judicial), PCS(Executive), UGC(NET) etc.

Chandigarh, April 15:- A meeting of Finance and Contract committee of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh was held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor and attended by Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Sh. Vinod Aggarwal and Smt. Sunita Dhawan, member councilors and officers of MCC including Sh. Tilak Raj, Sh. S.K. Jain, Sh. During the meeting the members discussed various important issues and accorded approval to the following agenda items:

·        Auction of eating joint at Shanti Kunj, Sector 16, Chandigarh and fixed reserve price rent @ Rs. 24000/- per month.

·        Rough Cost Estimate for work of strengthening of SWD system of village Burail, Sector 45 C&D, under ward No. 14, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 45.31 lacs.

·        The committee also accorded approval to an agenda item regarding renting out of office space at overbridge, sector 17, Chandigarh to Bank of Baroda.

·        Auction of unserviceable T&P, damaged equipments, benches, MS flat railing and scraped material lying in Horticulture store of Sector 29, 33, 35, 47 and Shivalik Garden, Manimajra through e-tender.

·        Work of raising of boundary wall height along with providing and fixing of MS wire mesh jail at Water Works, Sector 37, Chandigarh at an estimated cost of Rs. 33.85 lacs.

IGNOU holds 34th Convocation through Virtual Mode on 15th April, 2021

Owing to the rapid surge in COVID-19 cases, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) hosted its 34th Convocation virtually on 15th April, 2021 (Thursday) at 11 AM. The University awarded degrees, diplomas, and certificates to more than 235,000 successful students in the Convocation. In this Convocation discipline wise Gold Medal were also awarded. Prof. Nageshwar Rao, Vice-Chancellor Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) presented the Annual Report of the University. In his address he emphasized that IGNOU continuously provided support services to its learners during pandemic through online mode and also started online programmes. He also stated that due to the quality students support services provided by IGNOU to its learners throughout the country IGNOU was recently awarded A++ Grade by NAAC.

SEWING TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP AT UIFT & VD, PANJAB UNIVERSITY

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, (UIFT & VD),
Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized an Online Sewing Technology Workshop in
collaboration with Usha International Ltd. on April 12, 2021. Fifty students from
the department and faculty attended this workshop.

Mr Rawat from Usha International Ltd. was the resource person. He elaborated the
latest technology in sewing machines. Earlier sewing used to be limited to working
on single needle lock stitch machine but now with the advent of zigzag sewing
machines as well as computerized sewing machines creativity can be made to
execution. A live demonstration of working of six different types of sewing machines
was conducted where usage of different presser foots like piping foot, ruffler foot,
zipper foot etc. was also shown.  Variation in zig zag stitch and length of stitches
can create stunning patterns. Application of beaded strings, applique work, lace
application, couching, designs in circular pattern all was demonstrated on different
types of fabrics. Not only sewing but surface decoration of fabric with computerized
embroidery was exhibited on Memory Craft Machine.

The two-hour session was completely engrossing and attendees were inquisitive about
the kind of work possibility on these machines. Dr Anu H. Gupta appreciated the
efforts of the team of USHA International Ltd. who elaborated and demonstrated not
on one but all seven different machines in detail and remarked that such workshops
definitely add to the students’ knowledge regarding the latest technology and trends
in Fashion Industry.
