While sharing information about the green belt, the Mayor said that this green belt having 1 acre of area has been rejuvenated at a cost of Rs. 10 lacs. Iron railing, footpath, landscaping by providing grass, decorative plants and flowering shrubs etc. have been provided in this green belt.

Surinder Mohan Nayyar father of CA Vikram Nayyar, officiating Registrar, and father-in-law of Professor Chanchal Narang, University Institute of Legal Studies, left for his heavenly abode due to Covid 19 on 25.4.2021. He was 77 years of age, resident of Khanna and survived by his wife, two sons- CA Vikram Nayyar and Nitin Nayyar, daughter in Laws, Daughter, Son in Law and Grand Children. The cremation is held today at Khanna under strict Covid protocols.

PANJAB UNIVERISTY CELEBRATES WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY BY LAUNCHING TWO BOOKS BY ITS ALUMNI

On the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day, Panjab University Alumni Association (PUAA) organised an online event to launch two books named, “12 sweet & sour years in China” and “Destiny of an Alien Life” written by PU alumni Sh. Alok Joshi and Dr. Jadab Sharma, respectively.

Highlighting the importance and the genesis of World Book and Copyright day, Prof. Anupama Sharma, Dean Alumni Relations in her welcome address, 

expressed that during the last year when most countries have seen periods of confinement and people have had to limit their time spent outside, books have proved to be powerful tools to combat isolation, reinforce ties between people, and expand their horizons, while stimulating the minds and creativity.

Prof. VR Sinha,Dean of University Instructions paid tribute to all the authors who contributed to cultural development and welcomed both the authors of the day. He highlighted that we can remove loneliness from our life by reading books during such a tough time of pandemic. He thanked the esteemed authors for choosing the platform of PUAA to showcase their talent. He beckoned other authors, artists, creative persons to use this platform liberally for mutually synergistic gains as PUAA offers a wide canvas to give wings to their imaginations. He also congratulated PUAA for organising the event and advised to separately hold discussion on issues of infringement, piracy, policy, ethics, and data pertaining to the use of copyright. Prof. Sinha said that today when electronic gadgets affect our minds to the extent that we get bored in a matter of minutes, a good book, which can capture and sustain our interest for a few hours is invaluable. We read and then we grow our minds, our thinking not only becomes critical, we also become open to other viewpoints.

Mr. Alok Joshi, a PU alumnus of Department of English and author of the book, 12 sweet & sour years in China informed the audience about his book. He expressed that in this book he has shared the good and strange experience of his life in China which spans over 12 years, starting near Bejing Olympics and ending just before COVID19. The 9 Chapters book is a non-fiction work and quite relatable for the common people. He also talked about the mindset of Chinese people about Indians in his book. Mr. Joshi took queries from the audience and shared his motivation behind writing this book.

Then, Dr. Jadab Sharma, Faculty, Centre for nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Panjab University who writes with his pen name, Weeping Rose, made the audience aware of his book, Destiny of an Alien Life. He shared his life experiences and informed that this book is a mixture of Science fiction and spirituality. How a group of people met at a strange place and how they survived in those conditions. He expressed that in the initial 3-4 chapters he has tried to build up the plot and in the later chapters, he has given his experiences. He urged the audience to  read the book and give their honest opinion. It was followed by some enthusiastic comments and questions from the audience.

Chief guest Prof. VR Sinha released both the books and thanked both the authors.  Prof. Anupama Sharma, presented the vote of thanks and concluded the meeting.

Lecture Series by deptt of Ancient History, PU

The Department of Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology, Panjab University, as part of its ongoing series of specialised lectures, invited Professor Susmita Basu Majumdar from University of Calcutta to speak on “Reading Silence, Whisper and Voices : Readings through the Epigraphic Lens”. 


As a renowned epigraphist and numismatist she spoke at length about how epigraphs
can help us decipher history. About 100 postgraduate students, research
scholars and faculty members attended the lecture. An interactive session followed.

            Dr.Ali Abbas coordinator Department of Urdu, in his speech highlighted  the  important role  of journalists  during the freedom struggle.

            Mohd Moosa  a research scholar, in his research paper said that maulana anjum Ansari exhorted the muslims to plunge in the freedom struggle. He also highlighted  the pitiable conditions of Muslims in the country in his newspaper ‘Al- Hilal’.

Slaughter house will remain closed on 25th April

Chandigarh, April 23:- Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh today said that as per the demand of Jain Samaj, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has decided to shut the slaughter house on “Mahavir Jayanti” i.e. 25th April, 2021 (Sunday). In view of the closure, the meat shops will also remain closed on this day. The meat sellers are directed to comply with these orders strictly.Sh. Kailash Jain from Jain Samaj expressed gratitude towards the decision of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh regarding the closure of Slaughter house on the auspicious day of Mahavir Jayanti.

Governor launches “ I’m Chandigarh” mobile app for various services under e-Governance

Chandigarh, April 23:- Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor, Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh today launched “ I’m Chandigarh” mobile application to facilitate citizens to access various services under the project implementation of e-Governance services in Chandigarh.

The mobile application was launched today from Punjab Raj Bhawan, here today in the presence of Sh. Manoj Parida, IAS, Advisor to Administrator U.T. Chandigarh, Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh, Sh. Arun Kumar Gupta, Principal Secretary, Home, Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh-cum-CEO, Chandigarh Smart City Ltd.

While sharing information about the mobile application, Sh. K.K. Yadav said that at present fourteen major services are available on mobile app and more municipal services will be added in coming days. The app will be providing online delivery of services, to minimize physical interaction and movement to Govt. Offices, faster application submission, online payment facility, tracking, monitoring, 24×7 access to services, timely resolution of issues, increased transparency.

He said that the mobile app named as “I’m Chandigarh” has been developed by Chandigarh Smart City Limited and is available for download from Play Store for Android app as well as Apple store for IOS app.

He further said that with the launch of this mobile app, now citizens can register any municipality related complaints and track the status of the same using the mobile application, apply for Licenses & Lease Renewal, Permission to keep pets, Advertisement, Road Cut, NOC for Selling of meat, online booking of water tanker, booking of open space to store building material, request for pruning of trees, removal of overgrown/Green trees and removal of dead/dangerous/dry trees. Other services that are available on mobile app are E-Challan for Encroachment, Property Tax& Services related to Colony Branch.

He said that more municipal services will be added including the services being provided by the UT administration to this mobile app so that “One City One Mobile App” shall be available for citizens to access all online services being provided in the city of Chandigarh.

Lecture on Employment Opportunities in Govt Sector by IAS Centre, PU

The Centre for IAS and Other Competitive Examinations, Panjab University organised a special lecture for the students/aspirants of various competitive examinations today. Renowned Career Counsellor Ms. Urvashi Sahni talked about ‘Employment Opportunities in Government Sector’.

Ms. Sahni dwelled upon the employment opportunities through various Competitive Examinations like Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Life Insurance Cooperation (LIC), Railways, Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), Union Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). She apprised the students about Eligibility, Exam Pattern and other details about these exams. She motivated the students and aspirants to focus on the goal for which they are preparing. She gave useful tips to the aspirants to crack competitive Exams.

UIFT & VD, PANJAB UNIVERSITY organizes Webinar

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, (UIFT & VD), Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized a webinar titled “Sewing Threads: Technicalities in Selection and Usage on Fashion Products” ,today.

Mr Uday Narayan Bammanwadi, Technical Service Manager with M/s. Guetermann India Private Limited, Gurgaon in his address, talked about the sewing threads – how these are manufactured, what are the types of sewing threads used in the apparel and textile industry and technicalities related to sewing and sewing threads. He differentiated between the spun and core spun sewing threads and elaborated Micro Core Technology (MCT) in thread manufacturing. There are various types of raw material or fibers used in manufacturing of yarn. He also illustrated how PET bottles are recycled to prepare sewing yarn contributing towards sustainable practices.

Puckering is a very common problem encountered during stitching operations on the production floor. He discussed various kinds of Puckering and technical reasons for the problem and showed samples of how correct selection of needle and yarn can lead to no pucker situation. Adjusting feed dog for pucker free situation was also demonstrated. 

Ticket number or yarn thickness and its selection for different fabrics were discussed at length. While stitching, a needle thread is continuously under pressure and has friction with the needle hole and the fabric. Needle temperature is also raised while high speed sewing and lubrication of sewing thread protect it from these extreme temperatures. Lubrication of thread can be during the dyeing stage or it can be done once the thread is manufactured. Mr Uday stressed that dyebath lubrication is better and lend the yarn with such qualities that thread remains intact and can withstand so many pressures and abrasions. 

Earlier, Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson of UIFT & VD welcomed and introduced the key speaker who has more than 26 years of technical experience in the field of Apparel and sewing technology. She said that

correct choice of sewing thread is very important as the selection of needle and thread can immensely reduce the rejects in a garment factory . 

Around 100 participants including Research scholars, students of Fashion Technology and faculty members from various colleges within and outside the city attended the webinar.

The speaker answered queries of lot of students like sewing on stretchable fabrics, how GSM of fabric is related to the selection of sewing thread, the needle and machine etc.  Overall, the webinar was very interesting and informative for the researchers and students who will be joining industry in future.

PUAA plants Trees on World Earth Day

Panjab University Alumni Association organized a plantation drive at PU alumni house to celebrate World Earth Day ,here today.

Prof. Jagat Bhushan, Controller of Examinations planted trees in the presence of Prof Anupama Sharma, Dean Alumni Relations, Ms. Renuka Salwan, Director Public Relations, Mr. Amandeep Singla, AE Horticulture along with staff of PU alumni association.


Dr. Jagat Bhushan said that tree plantation is very important step for the community, especially in the testing times of COVID19 and this initiative will go a long way in inculcating awareness about environment amongst students, faculty and staff.

Over 150 saplings of Neem and Gulmohar trees and Sangunya, schefflera, fern and euphorbia plants were planted in the entire premises of alumni house.
