Two professors of University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), namely, Prof Bhupinder Singh Bhoop and Prof Om Prakash Katare, of Panjab University have been felicitated with Pharma Excellence and Pharma Recognition Award, respectively, on Teacher’s Day, 5th September, 2021 by PHARMA LOK, an organization of eminent pharmaceutical professionals of India.

            Globally acclaimed for his scientific work on Pharma Quality by Design (QbD), Nanomedicine and Computational Pharmaceutics, Prof Bhoop has to his credit nearly 410 publications, including 16 books with an H-index of 52, 7 patents and 3 technology transfers. A widely travelled scientist, he has delivered over 380 talks in India and several countries abroad, and have trained thousands of industrial scientists on QbD paradigms. Former Chairperson-UIPS, Deal Alumni Relations –PU, Dean Faculty Pharm Sciences, and Member University Syndicate & Senate, Professor Bhoop’s research work has fetched him with numerous international and national awards, accolades and fellowships, including the one from the Vice-President of India.

            Prof. Om Prakash Katare is a world-renowned scientist in liposomal drug delivery technology. He has had honour of serving top positions in PU like Chairperson-UIPS, Dean-Faculty Pharm Sciences, Chairman-IAEC, and Director- Research Promotion Cell, PU. Till date, he has brought forth over 240 quality publications, 4 edited books, 10 international and national patents and commercialization of 5 industrials technology transfers of novel drug delivery systems. On the basis of his research work and technology development and transfers of several nanostructured and liposomal technologies, he has been bestowed upon with numerous awards including the unique distinction of being honoured by President of India with DBT-Tech Transfer Excellence Award.

Commissioner visits C&D Waste Plant, MRF Stations & STP at 3 BRD

Chandigarh, September 10:- Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh today visited various big projects of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh including Construction & Demolition (C&D) waste plant at Industrial Area Phase-I, Material Recovery Facility Station and Sewerage Treatment Plant, 3 BRD, Chandigarh.


The Commissioner instructed the concerned engineers to ensure that the C&D plant of 150 MT functions at full capacity daily. She also said that the machinery be upgraded very soon to maximize the capacity so that most works of MCC can be executed using material from this plant.


She emphasized that awareness needs to be created in some parts of city from where waste is still coming in mixed form in the MRF stations. She said that STPs will be upgraded to ensure high quality of tertiary treated water.


                    She was accompanied by concerned senior officers of Municipal Corporation. The Chief Engineer apprised the Commissioner that the work at C&D waste plant consists processing of construction and demolition waste & manufacturing of PCC products to be used for pavements, road work, fencing work etc. Processing plant accepts all cement, construction demolition waste except steel up to the size 1-1.5 feet which is being processed by crushing and washing in four type of aggregates i.e. sand, 10mm Bajri, 20mm Bajri, and 40mm Bajri.

                    After that the Commissioner visited Material Recovery Facility Centre at 3 BRD and Industrial area Phase-I, where the Joint Commissioner apprised her about the functioning of the centre. He apprised that door to door waste collection vehicles brings segregated waste i.e. dry & wet waste in different compartments at the Material Recovery Facility which is having dedicated space for sorting of recoverable dry waste into different categories like paper, card, recyclable plastics, glass bottles, metal etc. Dry waste left after recovery of recyclable materials are being compacted in huge compactors in compost plant located in Sector 25, Daddumajra, Chandigarh. Weigh bridges have been provided for measurement of dry and wet waste within the Material Recovery Facility.


The Commissioner further visited Sewerage Treatment Plant, 3 BRD. She reviewed the waste water management system in Chandigarh where she was briefed by the Chief Engineer about treatment of sewage received in STP.


The Commissioner also visited Water Works at Sector 39, Chandigarh and she was apprised by the Chief Engineer that 87 MGD canal water received from Kajauli Water works and further distributed as per the set pattern. He informed that the per capita availability of water is 245 LPCD which is highest in the country.

चंडीगढ़, 9 सितंबर: विश्व आत्महत्या रोकथाम दिवस (10 सितंबर) के मौके पारस अस्पताल का उद्देश्य है कि आत्महत्या की प्रवृति रोकने के लिए विश्व भर के लोगों को एकजुट किया जाए तथा ‘कार्रवाई के माध्यम से आशा की किरण जगाना’ थीम के तहत अधिक जिंदगियां बचाई जाएं।

पारस अस्पताल के डाक्टरों ने आत्महत्या रोकथाम के लिए राष्ट्रीय कौंसिल (एनसीएसपी) की मुहिम- ‘जिंदगियां’ बचाने के लिए 5 काम करो की हिमायत करते हुए लोगों को अपील की है कि 10 सितंबर को लोगों के जीवन की रक्षा के लिए 5 काम करने के लिए 5 मिनट निकालो। चेतावनी के संकेत जानें, यह जानो कि मदद कैसे की जाए, आत्म देखभाल का अभ्यास करें, पहुंच बनाओ तथा इसका प्रचार करो।

पारस अस्पताल के मानसिक रोगों के विभाग के कंस्लटेंट डा. कृति आनंद ने कहा कि कोविड 19 महामारी के दौर में आत्महत्याएं लोगों की जिंदगी के लिए बड़ी चिंता का विषय बन गई है, क्योंकि यह मौतों का बड़ा कारण बन रही है। उन्होंने बताया कि हर वर्ष आत्महत्याओं के कारण दुनिया भर में 8 लाख मौतें हो जाती हैं, जबकि भारत में करीब 1 लाख 35000 लोग खुदकुशी के कारण मौत के मुंह में चले जाते हैं। यह दुनिया भर की कुल मौतों का 18 प्रतिशत है।

उन्होंने बताया कि किसी व्यक्ति को सुसाइड का ख्याल आना इस बात का संकेत है कि वह मानसिक रोग से पीडि़त हैं तथा उसको तुरंत इसका इलाज करवाना चाहिए। सुसाइड क्यों होते हैं इस बारे समाज में चेतना पैदा करनी चाहिए। माहिर डाक्टर ने बताया कि बहुत सारे लोगों का विश्वास है कि सुसाइड करने वाले लोग स्वार्थी होते हैं तथा सरल तरीका अपनाते हैं पर सच्चाई यह है कि ऐसे लोग मानसिक रोग से बहुत ज्यादा पीडि़त होते हैं तथा वह बेकार, निराश व असहाय महसूस करने लग जाते हैं।

डा. कृति आनंद ने बताया कि इसके अलावा बहुत सारे लोगों में मौखिक या व्यवहारिक चेतावनी के संकेत ज्यादातर आत्महत्याओं से पहले मिल जाते है। इसलिए इसको नजरअंदाज नहीं करना चाहिए। सुसाइड से व्यापक कलंक जुड़ा होने के कारण बहुत सारे लोग इस बारे खुलकर बात नहीं करते।

डाक्टरों ने कहा कि यदि किसी भी व्यक्ति में इस तरह के विचार पैदा होते हैं या महसूस होते हैं तो उनको तुरंत डाक्टर की सलाह लेनी चाहिए। इसके इलाज के लिए सलाह-मश्वरा, अनुवर्ती फोन कॉलस तथा दवाई वगैरह की जरूरत भी होती है।

डा. कृति आनंद ने कहा कि अगर कोई व्यक्ति मरने की इच्छा या खुद को मारने की बात कर रहा है, बोझ होने की बात कर रहा है, निराश है या जीने का कोई कारण नहीं है, असहनीय भावनात्मक या शारीरिक दर्द महसूस कर रहा है, अपने दोस्तों-मित्रों तथा परिवार से अपने आपको अलग-थलग करता है, तो यह भी उसके सुसाइड की तरफ जाने का गंभीर संकेत है, ऐसे व्यक्ति को तुरंत सलाह-मश्वरे की जरूरत है।

International Literacy Day celebrated at PU

Department of Life Long Learning and Extension in collaboration with Centre for Social Work celebrated International Literacy Day on 8th September, 2021.  More than 30 faculty members, students and office staff participated in the celebration of the event. 

The celebration promoted the World Theme of Literacy Day enumerated as; ‘Literacy for Human Centred Recovery: Narrowing the Digital Divide’.  Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Parmjit Singh Kang, Chairperson, DLLL&E welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of literacy as a tool to change the word by educating everyone by raising their awareness, knowledge and information level.

Prof. Sween, Senior Most Faculty Member of the DLLL&E traced the history of celebrating this day at the International Level.  She said that Technology and Digitalization can enhance the participation of literacy at the individual, community, national and global level by computing and communicating the knowledge and information by using technology.

Dr. Gaurav Gaur, Chairperson, Centre for Social Work promoted literacy as a tool for community participation and effective communication. He said more efforts should be put-in to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio, so that everyone can become literate.

PU Library gets books on Sanskrit Prose

The family of late Dr. M.C. Sharma donated a book titled “Panorama of Sanskrit Prose Kavyas” to Dr. Jivesh Bansal, University Librarian, Panjab University, in his memory and tribute to his alma mater. Dr. M.C. Sharma had been the University Grants Commission (UGC), Research Scholar in the Department of Sanskrit, Panjab University, Chandigarh from 1967 to 1970. He was the first Ph.D. in Sanskrit from Panjab University, Chandigarh. He served as Professor and Head of the Department of Sanskrit in Govt. College, Chandigarh.

            Dr. Sharma’s book is the culmination of his tremendous research in the field of Indology and presents a critical study of Sanskrit Prose Kavyas with special reference to geographical, social and cultural data from 6th Century A.D. to 15th Century A.D.  and is a pioneer research work in the field of oriental language and literature. It was his passion to publish this book on Indology and to distribute the book in various libraries across India and world for students as a research reference guide on Indology.

Plantation Drive near BH-8, PU

The Environment Preservation and Awareness Committee of Panjab University alongwith Horticulture Division, celebrated International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies by organizing a plantation drive near Boys Hostel no.8 in Panjab University to spread the message of clean air. The day is celebrated to emphasize that clean air is an essential requirement for human beings and all life on Earth. Unfortunately, industrialization has polluted our air and water sources heavily leading to severe health disorders.

            15 plants each of sagwan and neem, which are eco friendly and have air purifying quality, were planted. The plantation was attended by Dr. Suman Mor, Chairperson, Deptt. of Environment Studies and Chairperson Environment Preservation and Awareness Committee, Prof. Monica Randhawa, UIET, Dr. Manjushri Sharma, UIAMS, Dr. A.N. Singh, Deptt. of Botany, Er. Anil Thakur, Divisional Engineer (Horticulture), Er. Amandeep Singla, Assistant Engineer (Horticulture) and research scholars of Environment Studies & Botany.

Chandigarh, September 7:- Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh today formally launched the “Hindi Pakhwara” at MCC building here today in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.

While addressing all the senior officers and heads of various wings of MCC, the Mayor said that different programmes will be organized during the Hindi Pakhwara scheduled to be held from 7th to 21st September, 2021. He said that possibilities will be explored to create “Hindi Vibhag” in the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh to promote Hindi language in the office.

The Mayor said that the water bills should be in both languages i.e. English as well as Hindi. He said that different competitions will be organized during the Hindi Pakhwara including Essay writing, Slogan writing, Pledge, handwriting competition besides story writing etc. He said that prizes will be given to the winners on 21st September, 2021.

Civil dispensary opens at rehabilitation colony, sector 52; nearly 35000 residents to benefit

Chandigarh, September 7:- Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh today inaugurated newly constructed civil dispensary at a cost of Rs. 1.23 crores at rehabilitation colony, sector 52, Chandigarh in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. The dispensary would cater to a population of around 35000 residents of the local area.

He said that the civil dispensary will serve rural area of village Kajheri, EWS/rehabilitation colony, electricity colony, sector 52 and will also help the people around for a cost effective medical treatment. He said that this dispensary will also be used for regular check-up of staff working with Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh specially focusing on wide coverage for door to door waste collectors with also possible medical health facilities.

While elaborating about the features and facilities in the civil dispensaries managed by MCC, the Commissioner said that the two dispensaries in sector 49 and 50 are being managed by the PGIMER and the medicines used are provided by Director, Health Services office, Chandigarh to these dispensaries and process has been initiated to sign an arrangement with PGIMER on the same pattern for this dispensary also.

She also briefed about the infrastructure provided in the civil dispensary, that two doctor rooms, ANM room with store, Injection room, Laboratory, Store and Chowkidar, Reception, Registration room with Pharmacy store with adequate facility of separate gender friendly toilet blocks.

The Mayor also said that in addition to that upgradation of other services are also going on in EWS/rehabilitation colony besides recarpeting of internal roads, construction of phirni of village Kajheri, construction of streets. Construction of community centre in village Kajheri is in progress and will be completed shortly, she added.
