Prof S K Tomar from the Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been appointed as Dean Research by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chanceller, Panjab University. Prof. Tomar is a renowned researcher and well known mathematician. He has 116 publications in the journals of international repute and has delivered more than 125 lectures in the country and abroad on the different topics of his research. He is a nominated member on the governing body of GJU, Hisar and Central University of Himachal. Recently he has also been nominated as a member of Senate of Panjab University by the Chancellor of University.

            In order to sensitize science education among the children and to all other corners of the society he initiated Chandigarh Vigyan Parishad in the year 2016. Chandigarh Vigyan Parishad is a part of Vigyan Bharti at national level. He is also an elected fellow of NASI (National Academy of Science, India) and is a recipient of PL Bhatnagar award lecture of Indian mathematical society. He has more than 34 years of research and teaching experience. He is a widely travelled person and has visited several countries under research collaborations.

Chandigarh, September 30:- As a part of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav celebrations, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh organized “Sarvjanik Sauchalaya Safai Jan Bhagidari Amrut Diwas” in all 26 wards of Chandigarh including main programme by dedicating newly renovated toilet block in sector 17 D under old bridge.

During the programme Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh was the chief guest and he formally dedicated the toilet block in presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Sh. Charanjiv Singh, Ms. Shipra Bansal, Councillors, office bearers of Market Welfare Association, Vyapar Mandal and officers of MCC.

The Sarvjanik Sauchalaya Safai Janbhagidari Amrut Diwas was also celebrated in each ward, where the area councilors were the chief guests in their respective wards and addressed the local residents and shopkeepers emphasising their role and responsibilities in the maintenance of the toilet blocks.

While addressing the gathering, the Mayor said that the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has taken an important initiative to upgrade 38 toilet blocks throughout city markets under the Smart City project with providing latest facilities in all toilet blocks.

He said that it is equal responsibility of the market welfare associations and local residents in the upkeep and maintenance issues of the toilet blocks and the associations should come forward for taking up the maintenance of the toilet blocks of their respective areas.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC said that for the feedback of the users in the toilets, QR code has been placed at each and every toilet block. As part of the new feedback system, citizens will be able to register their feedback about the facilities, maintenance, cleaning system available in toilets through the QR code system.

She said that QR codes will be placed on all public toilets so that people can scan the QR code and share their feedback about the availability of electricity, water supply, cleanliness of toilet premises and toilet seat while using the facility. Concerned officials of the MC Chandigarh will act swiftly if any issue arises, she added.

The toilet block provided at a cost of Rs. 15 lacs has separate/independent provision for differently abled persons/trans gender, male and female toilet blocks. To facilitate women users, provision of sanitary napkin as well as incinerator for the disposal of sanitary napkin has been been provided in the toilet block.

Chandigarh, September 29:- As part of the celebrations of ‘Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav’ to commemorate the 75th Year of Indian Independence, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today commenced the celebrations under the theme of ‘Kachra Alag Karo Amrit Divas’ at Ram Darbar, Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran and EWS colony, Maloya.

Awareness programmes aimed at triggering Door to Door Segregation of Waste at Source started from Ramdarbar colony by Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. Door to door waste collectors as well as residents of the locality participated in the programme.

Sh. Bharat Kumar, area councilor and Haji Mohd. Khurshid Ali, councilor were guest of honours at Ram Darbar colony, Sh. Rajesh Kumar, area councilor was Guest of Honour at the awareness programme at EWS colony, Maloya while Sh. Rohit Gupta, Joint Commissioner was chief guest and Sh. Anil Kumar Dubey, area councilor was guest of honour at Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran.

While addressing the door to door waste collectors, the Mayor said that segregation of waste has become a matter of serious concern taking into consideration the amount of waste being produced and its negative on environment (if not segregated properly). He said that segregation of waste at source level is the need of the hour as the waste being produced in the present day causes huge complications particularly in the urban areas. He said that if the waste will not be segregated properly, it will cause a lot of evil effect to human being. As far as recycling is concerned segregation of waste before disposing of it makes it easier to recycle, he added.

Ms. Anindita Mitra, Commissioner, MCC said that there are certain items that are not biodegradable but can be reused or recycled such as plastic, paper, glass, metal etc. she said that waste produces that can be reprocessed/recycled should not be given or received in mixed form as it will pollute the soil if buried underground. She said that kitchen waste should be segregated into different bags for different categories of waste such as dry and wet waste and dispose of separately. She said that segregation is the paramount step towards proper disposal of both categories of waste.

The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has announced Sh. Kala Ram as Safai Mitra Shiromani of MCC (brand ambassador) for rendering extra ordinary services in sanitation and waste to art. The Mayor and Commissioner presented him special jacket of brand ambassador with badge.

The Mayor and Commissioner also distributed T-shirts, masks and badges to the door to door waste collectors during the programme. Green and Blue bags were also distributed among the citizens at their door steps under behavioral change programme so that people may develop the habit of segregation of their household waste at source level.

A nukkar natak themed on ‘Garbage Segregation’ was also staged by artists of Parmpara theater group which showcased each and every issue related to segregation of household waste at source level.

Chandigarh, September 28:- Sh. Dharam Pal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh today launched the placemaking implementathon to commemorate Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav at New Park, Indra Colony, Sector 13, Manimajra, Chandigarh in the presence of Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh.

The Adviser to Administrator was chief guest, Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, Home Secretary and Dr. Vijay Namdeorao Zade, IAS, Finance Seretary, UT, Chandigarh were Guests of Honour during the programme. Sh. Parveer Ranjan, IPS, DGP, Chandigarh, Sh. Mandeep Singh Brar, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Anindita Mitra, Commissioner, MCC, Sh. Arun Sood, President, BJP, Chandigarh,  Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh Siddhu, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. While addressing the gathering the Adviser to Administrator said that Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements.  He said that Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav is an embodiment of all that is progressive about India’s socio-cultural, political and economic identity. The official journey of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” commenced on 12th March, 2021 and is a 75-week countdown to our 75th anniversary of Independence ending on 15th August, 2023.

He further said that Chandigarh is celebrating “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” from 28th September to 3rd October 2021 with various activities throughout the city. Under Placemaking Implementation where 22 cities of the country are participating to transform their underdeveloped areas, Chandigarh has envisaged to develop the New Park in Sector-13, Manimajra through continuous work spread over 75 hours, he added.

Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh said that it is proud to start the transformation of city spaces in Sector-13 Manimajra including placemaking of the new park. The efforts are to put together a light, quick and cheap intervention and anchor with events that educate and celebrate the spirit of freedom. Placemaking exercise is being undertaken as a multi-faceted approach to planning, design and management of public spaces, said the Mayor.

While sharing the developments to take place during the placemaking event, she elaborated that this new park in Pocket 8, Indira Colony will be an asset, and its potential will be realized with the intention of creating public spaces that promote people’s health, happiness and wellbeing.  It will inspire people to reimaging and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community, strengthening the connection between people and the places they share.  The park will be divided into various zones, like the Art Zone, Fitness Zone, Elder Zone and Kids Zone.

She further said that various activities like yoga session, interactive games for children’s, live painting competition, kabaddi and tug of war, among others have been organized today and scheduled for next two days for public engagement on the site. Apart from this, a dedicated toilet block for the facilitation of the users of the park is under construction and will be handed over to the public on 30th September.

She said that a corner has been developed with herbal garden wherein various types of herbal plants are being planted which can be used by the local residents. The park has been revamped with newly painted gazibos, grills and pathways. The park has been dedicated to the citizens with newly installed open gym, gymnastic/exercising equipments and various types of swings for children. She said that with these interventions, we foresee inspiration for transformation of other such underdeveloped spaces in Chandigarh and make them sustainable.

During the day various citizen engagements and competitions were organized by conducting a very refreshing and power boosting session of Yoga, a Kabaddi Match (National and Circle Style) was also got conducted between the school boys. Sh. Dinesh Sharma Sangathan Mantri Punjab BJP was the Chief Guest of the event. The winner teams were Circle style-Govt. school, Sarangpur. There was a huge enthusiasm for the children response activities like lemon race, sack race, balloon inflation etc.

The show stopper event was the Tug of War match between the female councilors and female officials of MCC as well as between the male councilors and the male officials of MCC. Winners of both the events were the MCC officials teams.

In addition to that magic show was the crowd catcher event in the evening. Local residents of all age groups were present to enjoy the event in the main stage. Besides this painting competition was also organized during which 75 students have participated and the participants have been facilitated with certificate and mementos.

PU VC interacts with UIPS faculty

A meeting with the faculty of University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh was chaired today by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice chancellor, PU with regard to scope for improvement of NIRF Rank of UIPS to No. 1. Prof. VR Sinha, Dean of University Instructions, PU  was also present.

            At the outset, PU VC extended his congratulations to UIPS for achieving NIRF Rank 2. He urged on focusing and identifying thrust areas keeping in mind the interdisciplinary collaborations to march towards excellence. The need of the hour is also to keep in mind the policies of Government of India while keeping an eye on international perspective also. PU VC added to explore avenues for consultancy and industrial collaborations and associate with NGOs for societal outreach.

            The department submitted their request for filling the vacant posts of their department in order to meet the deficit and ensure that teaching and research is not affected. Even, the request to adjust serving staff at UIPS against vacant technical positions was submitted to the Vice Chancellor. It was further requested that the Phd Fellowships be provided to the UIPS researchers, so that UIPS can enrol them for the same. PU VC assured of all possible help for the growth of the department. He also assured of upgradation of various UIPS labs.  

Prof. Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson, UIPS also discussed scope for improvement of NIRF ranking by proposing solutions for various NIRF parameters. The department strongly requested to divert more funds to UIPS. The department also asked to increase the hostel seats for the Masters programme.

French expert team from EU & AFD visits 24×7 water supply projects sites

Chandigarh, September 24:- The French expert team from EU and AFD today visited Water Works of Sector-39, Chandigarh and studied the existing infrastructure viz-a-viz the scope of work taken in the 24×7 project was evaluated.

Accompanied by the senior officers of Public Health Circle, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh the team also visited Maloya Resettlement Colony and discussed to explore the provisions of continuous water supply in the colony. The team also studied the Grievance Addressable Mechanism of MCC and visited Rose Club, Sector-16 Chandigarh.

The water connections mechanisms and Bill dispute redressal mechanism were also reviewed by EU/AFD team by visiting billing office at Sector -18, Chandigarh. Provisions taken to improve the quality of life in Sanjay Colony were discussed at length and the team had a first hand information on the present status of the colony by visiting the same.

The team also visited Sector-17 MCC office . Thereafter, discussions were held to finalize the Monitoring as Evaluation tools of the Project. The important dates of the projects/time lines w.r.t. signing of Credit Facility Agreement and Project Agreement were deliberated. The provisions for engaging Long Term Technical Assistance were discussed and the Mission ended on a positive note to proceed further.

PU VC releases a Book on Intellectual Property

A book entitled ‘Intellectual Property: A Primer for Academia’ authored by Professor Rupinder Tewari, IPR-Chair Professor, PU and Ms Mamta Bhardwaj, Scientist-C, DST-Centre for Policy Research, PU, was released by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh today. He remarked that that this book has come at a right time as IP is gaining strong foothold in higher education because we are living in a Technology-led era. Intellectual Property, especially patents, is a crucial vertical of Technology driven innovations.

IGNOU extends Admission up to 30th September, 2021

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date of submission of online Fresh admission of all Masters, Bachelor & Diplomas programmes up to  30th September, 2021 for the July-2021 session. This extension of last date shall not apply to Certificate and Semester-based programmes, i.e., MP, MPB, PGDMM, PGDFM, PGDHRM, PGDOM, PGDFMP, DBPOFA, PGDIS, MCA, BCA, and all Certificate and Awareness programmes of 6 months duration or less. Details of the IGNOU academic programmes for the July, 2021 session can be accessed from the link https://ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in/. The prospective learners can apply for Masters/Bachelor/Diploma programmes of the University on the official website, informed The Regional Director of IGNOU Regional centre Chandigarh Dr. A.K.Dimri. Last date of submission of ‘online’ admission form for the July session was earlier fixed for September, 23.
