Chandigarh, March 31:- Citizens of Chandigarh braved the rain to take part in “Swachh Mashaal” rallies in all the 35 wards led by area councilors and women of the city beautiful here today. The main aim was to create a Jan andolan by encouraging ward level mobilization of citizens led by women towards the goal of a “Garbage-Free Chandigarh”.

Organized by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, citizens spread awareness about zero waste, source segregation and home composting despite the rain. Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Chandigarh led the Swachh Mashal rally at Sector 19 while other councilors led different rallies at their respective areas alongwith local residents.

Chandigarh brought the month long celebration of womenhood and women led sanitation to an end, by making a giant human chain representing the symbol of womanhood. During this entire month, under the banner of “Chandigarh ki Naari, Gandagi Pe Bhaari”, the MCC recognized the efforts of 31 women over 31 days, and celebrated Holi with women safai karmacharis, brought tradition and swachhata together in the Swachh Kanjak event and finally braved the rain and organized Swachh Mashaal rallies in all 35 wards.

The “Swachh Mashal Rally” was carried out under the banner of Swachhotsav during which various different activities have been organized by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh including forming a circle with a small cross underneath, symbolizing women by the Self Help Groups.

The SHGs wearing four different types of caps that denoted segregation of waste including green caps for wet waste, blue for dry waste, red for sanitary waste, and black for hazardous waste.

At the end of the Swachh Mashaal Rallies, cleanliness drives were organized at each ward, followed by a Pledge-taking ceremony. The participants took an oath to keep the city clean and to actively promote the practice of waste segregation and composting. This event will inspire more citizens to take part in the cleanliness drive and help make Chandigarh a garbage-free city.
