Discussion on dyslexia at PU

The third day of 21days’ National Program on Assessment and Management of Children with Learning Disabilities from 2nd to 22nd December 2019, organised by Centre for Academic Leadership and Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh was initiated by Prof Raj K. Gupta (Program Coordinator). In the
first technical session, Ms. Apoorva Panshikar from SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai informed the participants about meaning, signs and symptoms of Dyslexia. She explained about the areas of assessment in the second session. She stressed that parents often find it hard to accept that there is a real problem and hence most of the times they misinterpret the situation. In the subsequent session, she threw light on the varied tools use to diagnose children with dyslexia.

Two weeks Refresher Course at Dept of Hindi concluded today

  The two week refresher course for language teachers organized by UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (UGC-HRDC) and Department of Hindi, on the theme ‘ Challenges of Reclaiming Folk in Literature’ concluded today. The chief guest at the closing ceremony of the refresher course was Prof. Rajbir Singh, who is the Vice Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Haryana and State University of Performing Arts, Rohtak. Addressing the participants of refresher course he said that language teachers have an important role to play in the era of communication, provided
they update their knowledge as per the needs of the times.

        He appreciated the theme of the refresher course and said that it was important to document the folk traditions to preserve the culture of the country. In his presidential address, UGC HRDC Honorary Director, Prof. S.K. Tomar emphasized the need of teachers to constantly have an urge to learn and be a student of the discipline. He also said that refresher courses of UGC provide this opportunity to be a student and update our knowledge and skills. Dr. Gurmeet Singh, Chairperson, Dept of Hindi, said that 27 teachers from seven states and teaching different languages participated in the course. He further informed that a total of 29 sessions were held in which 24 resource persons from different fields addressed the participants. Dr. Pratibha Kaushik, Dr. Ravinder Kaur and Dr. Chander Praksah while sharing their experiences said that besides being a knowledge enriching experience, the course has also been a memorable experience as the staff and students of Dept of Hindi also made them feel at home. Prof Rajbir and Prof. Tomar distributed the certificates to all the participants. On this occasion they also distributed cheques to the research scholars of Dept of Hindi who are working in the Earn While You Learn Scheme of the Dept.

The Symposium & Alumni Meet “Frontiers in Biochemistry”, 2019 was organized by the Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh on 29th -30th November, 2019 sponsored by UGC-SAP, UGC, New Delhi with Dr. Dipti Sareen and Dr. Nirmal Prabhakar as the Organizing Secretaries.

The Symposium & Alumni Meet "Frontiers in Biochemistry", 2019 was organized by the Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh

            The symposium started with the inaugural session having Prof.  H.M. Dani an alumnus and Former Dean (Faculty of Sciences) & Head, Department of Biochemistry, P.U. , Chd  as the guest of honour and Prof. Sarit K Das, Director IIT Ropar  as the keynote speaker. The address entitled as “Micro fluidics devices in Chemical Biology”  was exciting, thought-provoking and stressed upon the need of interdisciplinary marriage of all kinds of Medical and Engineering Sciences. This was followed by the Young Scientists session comprising of six oral presentations and fourteen poster presentations judged by our eminent alumni from PGI and other CRICK institutes. The alumni interacted with the students and faculty of the department in the evening with musical games and dinner.

            The talks on next day  were on the mesmerizing work being carried out by  the eminent scientists,  Dr.  J. Agrewala (IIT- Ropar),  Dr. Charu Sharma (IMTECH, Chd) , Dr. P. Guptasarma ( IISER,Mohali) and Dr. Monika Garg  (NABI, Mohali). A special session on “Innovative Practices & Patents” was the highlight of the symposium with three talks delivered by faculty , Prof. Bishwajit Kundu ( IIT-Delhi), Dr. Divya Kaush (PSCST ), Dr. Indrani Ghosh (Intellectual Protective Unit, CSIR). The Symposium concluded with prize distribution and vote of thanks in the Valedictory Session.

IGNOU December, Term End Examination 2019 is going to commence from 2nd December, 2019 and will conclude on 3rd January, 2020 in the region.

Chandigarh:

IGNOU December, Term End Examination 2019 is going to commence from 2nd December, 2019 and will conclude on 3rd January, 2020 in the region.

The students may download the Hall Tickets from the University website (http://www.ignou.ac.in/ or https://ignouhall.ignou.ac.in/HallTickets/HALL1219/Hall1219.asp) and appear in the examination.

Dr. Anil Kumar Dimri, Regional Director, IGNOU, Regional Center, Chandigarh informed that students are advised to be in possession of the valid Identity Card issued by the University at the time of admission during the examination. Under Regional Centre Chandigarh 7,697 eligible students have been issued Hall Tickets for this examination who will be appearing in 29,959 courses of different Programmes.  IGNOU RC Chandigarh has deputed Observers for monitoring examination activities and monitoring team has also been deputed by IGNOU headquarter, New Delhi for the smooth conduct of Term End Examination in the region. IGNOU Regional Center Chandigarh has established 08 Examination Centers for TEE December, 2019 including 03 Exam Centers in Jail at Chandigarh, Patiala and Ambalal for jail inmates.

IGNOU December, Term End Examination 2019 is going to commence from 2nd December, 2019 and will conclude on 3rd January, 2020 in the region.

Separate Hall tickets shall be issued to the students of BCA & MCA for Term End Practical Examinations. Students are advised to contact the Regional Centre in the last week of December, 2019 for their practical examinations. For BLISc. (Library Science) all theory Examination Centres are not activated for the conduct of Term End Practical Examination. Under Regional Centre Chandigarh the Term End Practical Examination of BLISc. Programme will be held at Examination Centre 0601 at Chandigarh only. Students are advised to contact Centre Superintendent of Examination Centre 0601 and Regional Centre for Practical Examination Schedule.

The mobile phones are not permitted inside the examination hall.

 ‘Coming to Alma Mater is like a pilgrimage’, said Mr. Sunil Arora, Chief Election Commissioner of India(CEC) and also
Alumnus of Panjab University while addressing at the Annual Global Alumni Meet hosted by Panjab University Alumni Association(PUAA), here today at  PU. While sharing the transition of Panjab University from Lahore to the present location at Chandigarh, he shared his personal and professional links to the different institutes of PU.

            He urged the youth to be disrupters by becoming innovators and initiating start ups which is the need of the nation. He urged all to individually and collectively be part of the change to take the country to greater heights.

            While appreciating PU in organizing this Alumni Meet and also simultaneously commemorating 3 events namely 550 years of the Guru Nanak Dev Ji, 150 Years of Mahatma Gandhi and 100 years of PU Honours School, said that all these events fill the gap between the vision and its practice. The leanings from each of these metamorphosed into movements led by these individuals who talked of things that were much ahead of times. In their own way, each of them transcended time and left an impact that is felt even today. He highlighted that the PU has had the good fortune of having been nurtured by teachers and administrators who were nothing short of Legends.

            He further added that by virtue of its history, achievements, the character of its institutions and the thread that
binds it to the past, PU has both a national stature as well as international acclaim. Over the years, the University has emerged as an institution that is at the frontier of innovative teaching practices, academic research, and interdisciplinary approach.

महत्तवाकंाक्षी अभियान सक्षम 2.0 हेतू परिवेश अध्यन, विज्ञान, ई0वी0एस0 के मोडयुलस का आनावरण उपायुक्त पंचकूला मुकेश कुमार आहूजा ने लघु सचिवालय के सभागार में किया।

            Mia Yen, Counsul General of Canada in Chandigarh discussed India Canada relations and emphasised the significant contribution of Indian students to the economy of Canada. She also shared her views on women empowerment, gender equality and dynamic bilateral relations. She shared that in last one year, there is an increase of trade between the two countries by 60%.

            Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh in his welcome address said that this event is being organized to create a strong bond with the Alumni. This will also help to revive all Alumni Chapters spread all over India and the ones established overseas. He said that he is looking forward to people gathered here to reconnect and relive their moments and be the Ambassadors of PU.

            Eight PU achievers Sunil Arora, Harit Nagpal, Ambassador Prof. Paramjit Sahai, Prof. Balram Gupta, Dr. Jaspreet S. Dhau, Dr. Arun Arora, Mrs Keshni Anand Arora, Harish Chander Sharma and Dr. Gambhir were honoured during the event.

            Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean Alumni Relations and Secretary of PUAA informed about various events being planned for the 2 days event for the Alumni. This reunion ignited the memories of past days among all the alumni members, she added.

            Mr. Sunil Arora, CEC visited Boys Hostel No. 1, PU where he stayed for few months with his brother for the preparation of administrative services. He said that visit to his hostel filled him with nostalgia which has taken him back to his student life. He inaugurated Wall of Alumni in the Common Room of BH-1 which had pictures of ex-residents who achieved distinguished position in their life like Lt. Captain Vikram Batra (Martyr), Naunihal Singh (Inspector General of Police, Punjab), Lt. Vikas Kundu (Indian Army), Pawan Kumar (Crime Branch, Chandigarh Police), Malwinder Kang (B.J.P Spokesperson, Punjab State), Dr. Manoj Kumar Teotia (CRRID, Chandigarh), Kuljeet Singh Nagra (M.L.A. from Fatehgarh Assembly, Punjab), Anmol Rattan Sidhu ( Addl. Solicitor General of India). Prof. Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare(DSW) and Prof. Neena Capalash, DSW(W), Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Warden, Boys Hostel No. 1 and all other Wardens of Boys and Girls Hostels were present on the occasion.

             A  first ever Hostel Magazine of Boys Hostel No. 3, connecting residents and the Hostel Alumni, was launched during the event. It carries memorable moments of the residents and the alumni visiting the hostels time to time during the year.  This was published under the supervison of Dr. Sanjeev Gautam as editor-in-chief and Sh. Saransh Fazilka as Editor.

            There was a ‘Fire Side Chat on Brand Building for Higher Education Institutes’ by Dr. Sandeep Goyal, an advertising Veteran and Mr. Harit Nagpal, CEO, Tata Sky.

            The day 1 of the event concluded with a Light, Sound and Sight show on Guru Nanak Devji and the lighting of lanterns and lamps marking 100 years of the Panjab University Honours School.

            Large number of PU Alumni, PU Fellows, Former VCs, Dignitories from the City, Chairpersons, PU Officials, Faculty and students were present on the occasion.

            Mr. Arora made a courtesy visit at the residence of Mr. R.S.Bawa, former Principal of Government College, Hoshiarpur who was teacher of his elder brother and brother in law.

One Week Short Term Course on Research Methodology inaugurated at UIAMS

University Institute of Applied Management Science (UIAMS), Panjab University inaugurated one week Short Term Course on Research Methodology. The course will be conducted from 27th November – 3rd December 2019. Thirty-five faculty members and research scholars from various institutions joined the course. The course intends to hone the skills of the participants for practical application of various statistical tools frequently used for solving research problems.

Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University addressed the participants and highlighted the importance of selection of research problem, selection of good institution and selection of appropriate supervisor for conducting good research work. He appreciated the theme of the programme and congratulated UIAMS for conducting the same.

        Prof. Sanjay Kaushik, Dean College Development Council, Panjab University emphasised upon meaningful research. He highlighted the importance of formulation of right objectives and selection of appropriate methodology to attain the same. The Department of Statistics is organizing a Workshop on SPSS for 8 days from December 04 – 12, 2019 (excluding Sunday) in the Computer Laboratory (Ground Floor), Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh.


        This course shall be open to all faculty members/research scholars of Panjab University, PGIMER/GMCH Doctors (having basic knowledge of Statistics) and for the faculty members of the neighboring institutes actively involved in research. Teachers/researchers from Economics, Home Science, Management and Social Sciences can
also participate in this workshop.

Workshop on SPSS


        A registration fee of Rs. 2000/- (Rs. Two Thousand only) will be charged in cash with the application form, which will be refunded to those who are not selected. The last date for receipt of application form as per attached proforma is 02. 12. 2019 (Monday) by 5.00 p.m. sharp in the office of the Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The form can also be downloaded from the notice board of the departmental webpage on Panjab University website.


        The selected participants are advised to bring a personal laptop loaded with SPSS. The selection will be on first come first served basis. The selected candidates will be informed through e-mail or phone or they can enquire from the office of the Department of Statistics (Phone: 0172-2541776) about their selection.

PUAA to host First Ever Annual Global Alumni Meet

PUAA to host First Ever Annual Global Alumni Meet

 Panjab University Alumni Association (PUAA), Chandigarh is hosting first ever 2 day Annual Global Alumni Meet on 28-29, November, 2019 at PU Law Auditorium. 


        The Guest of Honours of the event would be Mr. Sunil Arora, Chief Election Commissioner of India and Mia Yen, Consul General of Canada in Chandigarh. The Chief Guest is PU Alumnus and has shown his interest to visit Hostel No. 1, where he was staying for few months. Similarly, there are other Alumni who would be visiting their hostels for a nostalgic trip. Various distinguished Alumni will be honoured at the event.


         Prof. Deepti Gupta, informed that the main objective behind organizing this event is to revive all alumni chapters spread all over India and the ones established overseas. Already 250 confirmations with families have been received from India and 7 countries including US, UK, Canada, Philippines, Singapore, New Zealand and Afghanistan.


        During the two day event, there will be academic interactions apart from cultural and an award ceremony. A separate session on brand building for higher education institutes is being organized and will have presence of Mr. Sandeep Goyal, Advertising Veteran,  and Mr. Harit Nagpal, CEO, Tata Sky. 


        Light, Sight and Sound play ‘Sat Guru Nanak Pargatya’ is also being organized to commemorate 550 years of Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Law Auditorium. Lectures by prominent scholars are being planned on the same which is being coordinated by University Institute of Fashion and Technology, PU.


        To mark 100 years of PU Honours School, a special programme of Lanterns and Lights is being organized in the Campus. Similarly, a panel discussion on ‘My Vision of PU 2025’ will have Professor Emeritus and former VCs of PU.


        A special exhibition of rare International Cartoons and Postal Stamps on Mahatma Gandhi by Dr. Surjit K. Dass is already displayed at Gandhi Bhawan to commemorate 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi. This exhibition will be open till 29th November, 2019.


        PU Alumni House and Gandhi Bhawan are decorated with lights to welcome the Alumni for Global Alumni Meet.

Samvidhan Divas observed at PU

Chandigarh November 26, 2019

Panjab University, Chandigarh  today observed the Samvidhan Divas by taking an oath pronouncing the preamble to the Constitution of India collectively by Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instructions, PU in the presence of Prof. R.K. Singla, Dean Research, Sh. Muneeshwar Joshi, Secretary to Vice Chancellor and all officials of VC office.

Similar oath was taken at the Administrative Block by Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Prof. Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examination, Sh. Vikram Nayyar, Finance & Development Officer in the presence of officials of the Administrative Block.
The faculty, staff members and students of various departments of PU similarly took an oath on the occasion of 70th Constitution Day of India observed as Samvidhan Divas.
