Research Award for PU Faculty

Continuing with the striking performance in research field, Prof. Indu Pal Kaur from University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) got Researcher of The Year 2019 Award organised by Sunpure Extracts Private Limited at Sunpure Research Incubation Centre, Sikandrabad (U.P). Prof. Kaur has been recognised especially for her research work contribution in development of Solid Lipid Nanoparticles of Curcumin to overcome its bioavailability related issues. The award comprised of a memento, certificate and cash prize. In total she has filed 4 patents (including a PCT) and published 8 international papers related to Curcumin research. She has named it as CLEN (Curcumin encapsulated lipidic nanoparticles) and it is an oral aqueous nanoparticulatesystem. CLEN can be used as a health tonic, curative in inflammatory conditions like arthritis, hepatoprotective in liver diseases, antioxidant in slowing process of aging and even as an anticancer adjuvant therapy as highlighted by her recent research findings. Presently she is in touch with industrial houses interested in technology transfer of the CLEN.

INSPIRE conducted their Annual General Meeting which was preceded by a Seminar on the topic “Therapeutic Diet Management” by an eminent faculty of the region, Dr. Shreya Goel, Dietitian Shreya Academy,

 Chandigarh, at UIET, Panjab University, Chandigarh. She is expert in Diabetes, Weight Management and Harmonal Imbalance. 

            She talked about the health issues in the day-to-day life. She also informed the members about the risks involved with overweight & obesity and shared their safety measures. Diets related to good health management were also shared by her. During her interactions with the members, many dos and don’ts  related to diet and obesity were handled.

            On the occasion, Shri D.M.S. Bedi, Chairman, INSPIRE and formerly OSD to Chief Secretary, Punjab released the INSPIRE Directory on the Website. He highlighted the activities and achievements of INSPIRE that how it was serving the secretarial fraternity for their growth in career and the profession by organizing Orientations, Seminars, Workshops, Conferences etc. to keep the members updated with latest developments in the area of their profession.

            Those present included Shri J.C. Verma, Chief Patron, INSPIRE, Sh K G Grover Vice- Chairman INSPIRE and Assistant Registrar, Panjab University Chandigarh and other senior members of INSPIRE.

Prof. Jagat Bhushan, Principal, Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences, Panjab University was awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Dentistry International (ADI).


Prof. Jagat Bhushan, Principal, Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences, Panjab University was awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Dentistry International (ADI). This transnational organization is an affiliate member of highly coveted and largest membership-based dental organization, Federation Dentaire
Internationale (FDI) and is devoted to the advancement of dentistry throughout the world and to the elevation of dental standards by continuing education. Along with the sponsorship of dental education, research and patient care projects, this Academy directly aids in the improvement of the dental and oral health and well-being of people worldwide. ADI became the first Honorary Dental organization to be affiliated with the United Nations as an NGO (Non Governmental
Organization). Lately, the ADI has been granted Special Consultative Status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC.) This consultative status is unique for an oral health-related membership organization.  Fellowship in the Academy of Dentistry International is bestowed on dentists whose professional, civic, and related accomplishments are truly outstanding. Prof. Jagat Bhushan received this award from Dr Gerhard Seeberger, President ADI and FDI, during ADI global conclave India meet which was held at Chennai on 10th to 12th December 2019.

PU Faculty elected as President of SBRT

  Professor Sanjay Chhibber of the Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been elected as the President of the ‘Society for Bacteriophage Research and Therapy (SBRT)’ at the ongoing Annual Conference at Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore from 12th to 13th December, 2019.  The theme of the International Conference is “Paradigm Shift in Antimicrobial Therapy-Antibiotics to Bacteriophages” and is being attended by Scientists from India and abroad.  The Conference is being supported by DST-SERB, DBT, CSIR, INSA, SFAM and other International agencies.

        Prof. Chhibber has done pioneering work on bacteriophage and its associated products like depolymerases and endolysins in treating bacterial infections using animal models.  The role of well characterized phages and associated proteins in the eradication of biofilms of klebsiella prenmoniae and methicillian resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has also been evaluated in his laboratory.  He has published more than 35 research papers on bacteriophages in national and international journals of repute. He has 5 patents and book chapters on bacteriophage to his credit.  He has been promoting the beneficial effects of bacteriophages not only in therapy but in other areas as well by delivering invited talks at different platforms in India.

PU condems the assault incident

 Panjab University, Chandigarh strongly condems the recent incident of assault on woman in the Campus. Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, PU said that the incident was very unfortunate and University is taking necessary measures to curb such kind of incidents in future. Taking a serious note related to the security of residents, specially women residents of the Campus, Prof. Ashwani Koul, Chief University Security is asked to take all necessary steps on priority and any loopholes, if any, shall be plugged immediately.

Multilingual Mushaira at PU

To enthrall tricity’s poetry lovers, a multilingual mushaira was organized at the Mulk Raj Anand Auditiorium at Panjab University by the North Zone Cultural Center, Patiala in collaboration with Panjab University Alumni Association and Department of Urdu, Panjab University, with the likes of Shams Tabrezi and Ana Dehelvi. While the former is a prolific Urdu poet-writer cum stage announcer, the latter is a veteran poetess of global reputation.

        The event began with Dr. Ali Abbas reiterating how mushaira is a dying art and needs to be rescued by its connoisseur’s and admirers.

Also in attendance were Puran Singh Ahsan, a recognized Urdu poet of Punjab, Dr. Shyam Sakha Shayam, the former Director of Haryana Sahitya Akademi and an outstanding Hindi poet and writer, Naim Rashid, an expert in classical Urdu poetry, as well as B.D. Kalia Hamdam, an acclaimed poet and novelist.


        Gracing the occasion were Sarita Jain, a pioneer breaking new ground in Urdu ghazaland Hindi poetry, Subhash Sahil, a fecund Urdu-Hindi explorer poet of unexplored themes, Nalini Vibha Nazli, the only woman ghazal writer in Himachal Pradesh as well as Urmila Kaushik Sakhi, a brilliant actor-poet from Haryana.

        Leaving the audience in splits was Master Mahender from Haryana who amused everyone with his humorous poetry. Charming everyone with his exceptional poetry was Gurdip Gul, a classical poet of immense repute.


        Sh. Jatin Salwan, a lawyer-environmentalist who draws inspiration from Shiv Kumar Batalavi and is a prolific poet himself, recited Poems in Punjabi and Urdu.

        Ms.  Rani Balbir Kaur, Professor Emeritus, Department of Indian Theatre and a theater thespian was also present on the occasion.


        Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean Alumni Relations honored the versatile poets with tokens of appreciation and gratitude for enchanting the audience with their oratorical skills.

12th Chrysanthemum Exhibition

12th Chrysanthemum Exhibition

 Prof. R.C. Paul Rose Garden, Panjab University, Chandigarh is adorned with about 150 varieties of Chrysanthemum for the  12th Chrysanthemum Exhibition being organized by Horticulture Division, PU from 10-15, December, 2019. Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU will inaugurate the exhibition on 10.12.2019 at 2:00 p.m.. Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instruction will preside over the function and Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar will be the Guest of Honour.

        Er. Anil Thakur, Divisional Engineer (Hort.) said that the Horticulture Division is trying its best to make the exhibition more attractive than the previous years and has been preparing for the same with his team for many months. He informed that 7 new varieties namely Sonali, Sapna, Mushtak, Parveen, Mahatma, Dorris, Freshman, Alfred are  displayed this year which have been procured from places like Calcutta and Solan. About 4200 pots of Chrysanthemum will enhance the beauty of the garden.  The plants have been grown by the Horticulture Division itself in its nursery to get the
best results.

12th Chrysanthemum Exhibition


        The Horticulture Division has also invited the Employees, Residents, Departments, Hostels etc. to showcase their Chrysanthemums in this Exhibition.

        Such exhibitions have been organized regularly by the Horticulture Division in the past and have been huge crowd puller. These exhibitions are an opportunity to display the best products of Horticulture Division and also give a message for clean & green environment, keeping up with the motto of ‘Swachh Bharat’ being promoted by the Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Issues related to PU South Campus discussed

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh met the members of the South Campus Upliftment Committee and various Chairpersons of the Departments of South Campus, here today.   He urged all to work in coordination for the enhancement of the South Campus.   Various were suggestions were invited and it was informed that the Incubator shall be soon installed in the South Campus which shall help in carrying out the various projects which are underway. The concerned Chairpersons were asked to manage the car parking in front of all the respective departments. The Upliftment Committee in coordination with the XEN Office will take necessary steps for speedy installation of CCTV Cameras in all the Departments of the South Campus keeping in mind the safety of the students.

International Volunteers Day Celebrated at PU

The NSS volunteers of  Panjab University, Chandigarh were  honoured by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, for doing exceptional social service to mark International Day of Volunteers.

These NSS volunteers are doing commendable work in the field of  Blood Donation, Animal Welfare, Education, Community Health and  Sustainable Development under the guidance of  Dr. Gaurav Gaur, NSS Programme
Officer.

International Volunteers Day Celebrated at PU

Dr Navdeep Sharma and Dr Gaurav Gaur  briefed the Vice- Chancellor about the  various activities conducted by these volunteers from time to time. The NSS volunteers included Arshdeep Singh, Ishita Choudhary, Shishpal and Sukhman Singh.   The volunteers are doing selfless community work and associated with projects like Raddi Se Pragti,  Ann
Anand for Animals, Rakt Daan- Maha Daan etc. These volunteers have worked day and night enthusiastically. They saved so many lives by providing them with blood and platelets at the need of hour. Two of them have worked extensively in waste segregation and transporting leftover green leafy vegetables from hostels to cow shelters.
