IPR Workshop conducted by Chair-IPR on ‘Patents’ and ‘Copyrights’ at PU

In the current era of knowledge economy, Patents and Copyrights are the buzz words amongst the teaching fraternity of the Universities. Govt. of India also has a mandate of making teaching faculty in higher education institutions Intellectual Property Rights(IPR) savvy.   In order to sensitise the faculty of Panjab University and CRIKC institutions, to these topics, Chair-IPR (PU) and DST-Centre for Policy Research (CPR) at PU, Chd. collaboratively organized  a ‘IPR Workshop: ‘Patents’ and “Copyrights’ under the ‘Faculty Development Programme’ ,here today.

Prof. Sudhir K. Jain ,ABV School of Management & Entrepreneurship, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi

deliberated about the importance of use of Intellectual property (IP) information for deciding research themes in universities and research laboratories. Additionally, he voiced prominent strategic points for promoting IP in the academia like setting aside a share of internal funding for IP activities, creation of IPR cells, and significant
weightage of IP in the promotion criteria of university faculty.

Mr. Raghavender, Jt. Secretary, Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice, GoI, New Delhi and former Registrar of Copyrights of the Indian Copyright Office, introduce the issues pertaining to copyrights and importance of its registration.  He emphasised on the fact that there is a need of effective science communication mechanism to
disseminate the science knowledge amongst the masses.

 Ms Divya Kaushik, scientist, Patent Information Centre (PIC) of Punjab State Council for S&T introduced the participants with the Technology Innovation Support Centre (TISC) centres recently established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The workshop was attended by faculty members of the University and CRIKC institutions. The participants deliberated on the importance and significance of patents and copyrights and how they can play a crucial role in enhancing economical and intellectual prestige of an institution. The speakers emphasised on the fact that, researchers should not publish their findings in the public domain before filing a patent.

PU VC to be Governor’s Nominee at GJU

Chandigarh February 7, 2020

Haryana Governor Sh. Satyadev Narayan Arya has nominated Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, as his nominee, on the Selection Committee(s) of Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar here today.

As per the notification issued by the Haryana Raj Bhawan, Chandigarh, the Haryana Governor Sh. Satyadev Narayan Arya has exercised the powers conferred by Statute 20 (1) of the Schedule to Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar Act, 1995 to appoint PU VC as Hon’ble Governor’s/Chancellor’s nominee on the Selection Committee(s) for selection of teaching posts, besides Dr. Dev Swarup and Prof. R.S. Solanki, for a term of two years with immediate effect.

Named after Guru Jambheshwar Ji Maharaj, a saint environmentalist of the 15th century, the Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology was found in 1995 under the Act No. 17 of the Haryana State Legislature to impart education on the frontiers of Science, Technology, Engineering, Pharmacy, Environmental Studies, Non-conventional Energy Sources, Mass Media and Management Studies etc. The University has been accredited ‘A’ Grade by National
Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore in 2002, 2009 and 2014.

Prof. Raj Kumar expressed his gratitude to the Haryana Governor Sh. Satyadev Narayan Arya for the responsibility and assured that he will leave no stone unturned to take the premier institute of Science and Technology in Haryana to new heights.

PU Departments and Offices to install Suggestion Boxes

Chandigarh February 6, 2020

In a meeting chaired by the Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University asked for the installation of suggestion boxes in all the offices and departments of the university, here today. Prof. Kumar opined that the constructive feedback of all the stakeholders is must to improve the facilities at the campus and the same needs to be appropriately factored into the management process by incorporating, inculcating and integrating it to make the learning environment congenial. Feedback will help us to improve the stakeholder’s confidence, self-awareness and enthusiasm for learning at
Panjab University, he opined.

PU VC stated that the support of the stakeholders to the university will continuously help in improving and working truly towards transforming the human, social and economic condition of the society it is embedded in.

Further, he took stock of the preparation for the upcoming academic session and desired that the Help Desks be located at different places during admission days on the campus besides at regional centers and constituent colleges of the Panjab University so as to serve a powerful and affordable resource to provide with the information and support
related to different courses and facilities at the University premises.

PU VC urged the admission monitoring committee to develop a mechanism to attract top student-talent for different courses at PU as it will be of paramount significance to the university’s reputation and success. He urged to make all the courses offered at PU popular by providing students with multiple work-based learning opportunities.

The meeting was attended by Prof. Shankarji Jha DUI, Prof. Ravinder Kumar Singla Dean Research, Prof. Karamjeet Singh Registrar, Prof. Parvinder Singh Controller of Examinations, Prof. Sanjay Kaushik Dean College Development Council, Prof. Emanual Nahar Dean Student Welfare, Prof. Neena Caplash Dean Student Welfare (Women), Prof. Sukhwinder Singh Director Computer Centre among other University officials and senior Professors.

Lecture on “Ethical Issues and Concerns in Higher Education”

 Panjab University Alumni Association in collaboration with The Research Promotion Cell organized a lecture on
“Ethical Issues and Concerns in Higher Education” by  Prof. Vaishna Narang, professor Linguistics and former Dean SLL&CS -JNU Chandigarh. She stressed how the absence of any institutional mechanism for ethical research has hurt research regressively. Incompetence and plagiarism are mutually breeding each other and have rotted the
research ethics beyond repair. She stressed how language empowerment tools and prior ethical clearances can be helpful in this regard.

                   Prof. R.K. Singla, Dean Research, Panjab University in his address reiterated the importance of unbiased and honest data computation and publication which can be achieved by being objective and upholding the integrity of research ethics.

                   Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean, Alumni Relations gave a token of appreciation to Prof. Singla.

Special Lectures on Constitution Day

 The Constitution Day was celebrated in the University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University in collaboration with NSS. Co-ordinator, NSS Dr. Anupam Bahri welcomed Prof. Rattan Singh, Director, UILS and Dr. Shruti Bedi, Associate
Professor (Law), UILS to deliver special lectures on the series of Constitution Day.
       

While speaking on the constitution morality, Prof. Rattan Singh highlighted the importance of constitution. Preamble is the fundamental principle of all the laws from where they take support and spirit. To provide social and economic justice in the contemporary state of affairs, it is paramount to read, recite and execute the spirit of preamble of constitution, which provides secularism, socialism, social morality and ensure justice.


        While speaking on the significance of the constitution, Dr.  Shruti Bedi highlighted values of the fundamental duties under the constitution. She pointed out that these are not mere fundamental duties, but the ground realities which every
citizen should follow in the course of his life in the civilized society.

Session on Blissful Life at PU Girl’s Hostel No. 9

A session on “Blissful Life” was organized for the inmates of the Amrita Pritam Hall, Girl’s Hostel No. 9, Panjab University, Chandigarh. This life enhancing session was organized under the aegis of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).


The session was conducted by the Dr. Sudesh Arya, an Ophthalmologist from Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh and Dr. Shashi Arya, from the Department of Pulmonary Medicine. At the outset Dr. Arya referred to the definition of health given by the World Health Organization (WHO) that also includes spiritual wellbeing. He gave examples from Bhagvadgita to highlight the relevance of its lessons for a stress free and blissful life. He said that in the modern age ‘stress’ has become the number one disease and is our ‘hidden enemy’. It distorts comfortable way of
living. He talked about various behavioral, physiological, physical and cognitive effects of stress that lead to further problems like obesity, drug dependence, sleep disorder etc. that have now become commonplace. He also referred to lack of disciplined schedule and habits, irregular food habits and pollution as the stressors of health. He said that drugs, drinking, tranquilizers etc. only provide transient euphoria as a solution to deal with stress.


Further, Dr. Arya stressed that the actual solution for tackling stress lies in –‘simple living and high thinking’. Mind, he said, is the best friend, if controlled; and greatest enemy if not controlled. He said that for stress management controlling
the mind is very important and that can be done by Vairagya (detachment), Abhyasa (practice), Prasadam (food), Meditation and Satsang (association-good company). He emphasized on the importance of satwik food and spending time with oneself, for self- development and introspection.


The hostel inmates were enthusiastic after knowing the life-skills and the session concluded on with a positive note. Prof. (Dr.) Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare, Prof. (Dr.) Neena Caplash, Dean Student Welafare (Women) and Dr. Shipra Gupta, Hostel Warden were among those present to motivate the students.

PU VC inaugurates Chandigarh Book Fair

Chandigarh: 

Professor Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University Chandigarh inaugurated the Chandigarh Book Fair at Panjab University campus in the benign presence of Lt. Col. Yuvraj Malik, Sardar SPS Oberoi, S. Gurbhej Singh Goraya  here today. The Chandigarh Book Fair is organized by the National Book Trust in Panjab University from February 01 to 09, 2019.

In his inaugural address, Professor Raj Kumar highlighted the importance of the literature and underlined that the literature is the foundation of life. Literature is one of the most interesting and significant expressions of humanity and lay an emphasis on many topics from human tragedies to tales of the ever-popular search for love. Lauding the initiative of National Book Trust, PU VC stated that literature is one way for us to hear the voices of the past and work with the present. It is the way for the present to connect to the possible future.

Further, Professor Kumar said that the different colleges, institutions and the universities of the region including the
Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) will be benefitted from this initiative. He suggested the organizers of the book fair to explore the possibilities of establishing a nodal centre of National Book Trust in Panjab University to promote the habit of reading among the youth of the region in specific and country in general. Later, he visited the different book stalls and appreciated the wide collection of books.

Those accompanied PU VC at the inauguration ceremony included DUI Professor Shankarji Jha, DSW Professor Emanual Nahar, Professor Devinder Singh, Chief of University Security Professor Ashwani Kaul, Professor Gurpal Singh, Dr. Dinesh Kumar among other officials of the university.

“NSS Volunteers Experience Tips on Meditation and Adventurism”


        The second day of NSS Special Camp started with meditation session led by Ms. Baljit Kaur, Research Scholar, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The session was based on experiencing silence through meditation, dance and music. She focused on feeling the positivity which created a calm and peaceful environment.


                In the second session, Dr. Jeesu Jaskanwar Singh, from Department of Education, University School of Open Learning, Panjab University gave an informative talk and oriented the volunteers about the aims and objectives of NSS. Later, in the same session he talked about “Undertaking Adventure Expeditions”. He delved upon how adventure trips make difference to monotonous life of individuals. He shared his personal experiences of adventure trips and how he learnt to undertake such trips through ‘learning by doing’. As a novice, he took his first trip to Ladakh on meagre
resources but which culminated into success by getting inspiration from Dicky Dolma, the youngest Indian woman to climb Mt.Everest . He also shared such experiences gave him insights for taking calculated risks, practicing minimalism, exploring wildlife such as seeing snow leopards, ibex, and bactrian camels. The lessons he learnt and
people he met during his expeditions changed his perspectives wherein he met U.S school girls going on cycle expedition to Ladakh and a retired woman professor from Georgia Tech University on a very challenging adventure trail.


                In the post-lunch session, the students participated in slogan writing and two-minute talk on the theme “Innovative Ideas to Save Environment”. The judges for the session Prof.Swarnjit Kaur, Chairperson, PU-ISSER and Prof. Sheena Pall, USOL, Panjab University, Chandigarh applauded the students for their creative ideas. The Programme Coordinator PU, NSS, Dr. Navdeep Sharma shared that the camp has been meticulously organized by team of Programme Officers, Dr. Purva Mishra, Dr.Manjushri Sharma, Dr. Gurmeet Kaur, Dr. Navneet Kaur, Dr. Sucha Singh and Dr. Upneet Kaur Mangat.

Republic Day Celebrated at PU

Chandigarh January 27, 2020

Patriotic fevour and enthusiasm marked the 71st Republic Day Celebrations Panjab University(PU) Campus. Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU hoisted the National Flag at the Parade Ground which was followed by the inspection of the Guard of Honour comprising various contingents.


        PU VC while felicitating the gathering, announced enhancement of cash prize to deserving employees from Rs. 2100/- to Rs. 5100/-. He informed that the preceding year has been full of various achievements on various fronts including administrative, academic and research. He further added that Panjab University has always been known
for contributing immensely to research and in order to work in this area and consolidate PU’s position further at the national and international level, work in this direction has already been initiated and are in the process of signing agreements with many Universities abroad.


        He urged all to work towards achieving  better rankings for the forthcoming NAAC inspection in 2022. It was further informed that all efforts are being taken to complete the work of Multipurpose Auditorium, Girls Hostel No. 11 and a special building for HRDC and CALEM. He urged the PU officials, faculty and employees to work together for taking PU to greater heights despite of various challenges facing the University.  PU VC informed about Rs. 50 crores grant under RUSA 2.0. Through this grant, around 140 projects including Cancer research, social issues, will be addressed.


        Prof. Kumar appeal to one and all to associate for Swachhta Campaign in making PU a beautiful Campus. He also solicited cooperation from all for encouraging use of cycles in the Campus and parking the vehicles in the parking lots instead of parking on the road. Referring to strong alumni base of PU, he said that steps are being taken to ensure that PU alumni work hand in hand for the betterment of the University.


        Earlier, Prof Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, PU in his welcome address, urged all to work hard unitedly with determination towards their day to day responsibilities to take PU ahead on the road to success.


         On this occasion, PU employees namely Ms. Varsha Luthra, PA, Mr. SK. Nair, PA, Mr. Kewal Krishan, Laboratory  Superintendent, Mr. Parminder Singh, Sr. Assistant, Mr. Kamal Dutt, Mrs. Rameshwari, Cleaner, Sh. Ram Singh, Peon, Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Peon, Sh. Bahadur, Temporary Mali,  were felicitated with cash award of Rs.2100/- each, commendation certificate and a memento in recognition of their distinguished services.


        Further,  some employees were also recognized for their work by presenting them commendation  certificate.
       

Colourful cultural programme enthralled the audience. It started with a patriotic song titled ‘Anekta Mein Ekta’ by the students of PU Music Department followed by a patriotic song Bharat Hamko Jaan Se Pyara Hai by students of Guru Gobind Singh Vidya Mandir.


        Malwai Gidha by Govt. College Karamsar and Incredible India Dance by Ankur School Students followed the patriotic song.


         All senior officials of PU, Senate and Syndicate members, Deans, PUTA President, faculty, students and their families were present on the occasion.
