National Pharmacy Teachers Training Programme Begins at PU

National Pharmacy Teachers Training Programme started at Panjab University (PU) today.

The one-week web faculty training school under the initiative of UGC Networking Resource Centre (UGC-NRC), on “New Era Technologies in Formulation Design Space” is being hosted via CiscoWebEx at the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS.

As many as 68 selected pharma faculty and researchers from various Colleges/Universities of 21 different states of India and 1 from abroad are participating in the course.The training school intends to apprise and update the young participants among faculty and researchers on multiple forums of novel drug delivery design, development, and real time translation to plug the bench to bedside/ lab to clinic gap.

Full Professor, University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), SPAIN, Professor Maria José Alonsoinaugurated the function and delivered the key note address on “Delivery of Proteins and RNA Molecules using Nanotechnology.” She gave an overview about the work being done in her laboratory on oral ocular nasal and dermal delivery of biomolecules.

Prof. Alonso is a highly accomplished and recognised among the top 10 researchers in the World in Pharmacology (Times Higher Education international ranking, 2010) and appeared on ‘The Power List’ of most influential researchers in field of Biopharmaceuticals (The Medicine Maker, 2020-21). She has h-index of 98 and was Vice-Rector of Research and Innovation of the USC and Visiting Scientist at MIT, Cambridge, US; Univ of Angers, France; Univ of Paris XI, France and is known for her innovative industrial and entrepreneurial expertise.

Earlier, the Chairperson, UIPS and Program Coordinator, UGC-NRC and the Coordinator of the Course,Professor Indu Pal Kaur welcomed the participants and the Chief Guest, and briefed them about the achievements of UIPS and UGC-NRC programs. She also summarized about the course content to the participants. Dr Vandita Kakkar is the Joint Course Coordinator who conducted the proceedings of the event.

The day started with an ice breaking session followed by a workshop on the most sought after topic and as per the UGC-NRC concern on “How to write research proposal, research paper and related ethical issues?” By Professor Kanwaljit Chopra, Professor & Head, Pharmacology & Former Chairperson, UIPS, & Professor Anil Kumar, Professor of Pharmacology, UIPS.

The post-tea session covered an informative recorded talk by Professor Tejal A Desai, Chair & Deborah Cowan Endowed Professor, Department of Bioengineering & Therapeutic Sciences, Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF); and Professor in Residence, Department of Bioengineering, UC Berkeley (UCB), USA on “Using Micro and Nanostructured Materials to Modulate the Tissue Microenvironment”.

UIPS is the first and the only Pharmacy Institute in the country selected by MHRD for creating UGC Networking Resource Centre to promote and foster research and academics in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences by training young pharma trainers, selected across the nation.

Faculty Development Program on Integration Theory: Mathematical Analysis Concludes

A week-long Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Integration Theory: Mathematical Analysis was organized by the Department of Mathematics and HRDC, P. U. Chandigarh during January 4-10, 2022. The basic objective of this program was to give exposure to the faculty of colleges and universities on Integration Theory and its related areas of Mathematics.

The FDP started with an inaugural talk on the Evolution of Integration Theory by  Professor Inder K. Rana (Retd. IIT Bombay). He gave two talks in which he gave a glimpse of the historical development of the subject focusing on the contributions of Pythagoras, Archimedes, Eudoxes, Riemann, and Lebesgue. Prof Amin Sofi, NBHM Professor at Jammu and Kashmir Institute of Mathematical Sciences, gave talks on Axiom of Choice and various related paradoxes, along with its significance in rigor. Professor S. Pirzada, Head, Department of Mathematics, Kashmir University presented a Tour of Analysis through Graph Theory; signifying unity among different branches of Mathematics and Computer Science.

The FDP had 30 participants from 13 states of India from Jammu and Kashmir in the North to Tamil Nadu in the South and from Assam in the East to Maharashtra in the West. There were 10 resource persons from six different institutes of National Repute, including IIT Bombay, IISER Mohali and IIT Ropar. Prof. Narsimhulu Yakkala, Honorary Director, HRDC, University of Hyderabad., Professor BS Rajput, former Vice-Chancellor, Professor of Physics in Kumaon University and Chairman U.P.State Council for Higher Education Lucknow, were prominent among them. There were separate discussion sessions to ponder upon tricks of the trade, current trends, and professional opportunities; particularly for young researchers.

The University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University is organizing a one week faculty training school virtually on “NEW ERA TECHNOLOGIES IN FORMULATION DESIGN SPACE” from January 17 to 22, 2022 under the initiative of UGC Networking Resource Centre. The course will be attended by more than 70 selected faculty participants representing 21 states across the country.

Present training course has been planned with an aim to provide single platform dissemination on multiple forums of novel drug delivery design, development, and real time translation to plug the bench to bedside/ lab to clinic gap. Program will offer a blend of highly innovative state of the art interactive talks from national and international experts both from the industry and academia coupled with live workshops.

To mark Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary, the Department of Youth Welfare, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a webinar on the occasion of National Youth Day titled ‘Youth of 21st Century’ Century’.  Dr. Muneeshwar Joshi, Secretary to Vice Chancellor welcomed the Chief Guest Prof (Dr.) Harmohinder Singh Bedi Hon’ble Chancellor, Central University of Himachal Pradesh & Fellow, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

            Prof. H.S. Bedi stated that how the renowned scientists and personalities all over the world were amazed by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. To encourage and motivate our young brains, Swami ji’s thoughts, speeches, and writings on the development and progress of youth were discussed. H.S. Bedi concluded his lecture with inspiring words of Max Muller to encourage our youth to remain focussed.

            Muneeshwar. Joshi while congratulating everyone on occasion of National youth day, appreciated the vibrant presence of the Youth, the harbinger of a change in society. He said that Youth of today are ready to take up the cudgels to fight for a constructive reformation in culture and represent themselves as a catalyst of such prospective change and future. It is capable leadership and patronage of worthy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Raj Kumar, the Department of Youth Welfare takes advantage of every chance to engage youth in various activities that span all elements of their development, from personal to professional. He congratulated Dr Nirmal Jaura, Director of Youth Welfare, for organising such a discussion. He also said that, according to Swami Ji’s different quotations, youth manifests joyousness, enthusiasm, keenness, power, dynamism, strength, ambition, perseverance, and other such emotions and characteristics. पंचकूला, 8 जनवरी- जिलाधीश श्री महावीर कौशिक ने कोरोना वायरस के बढते मामलों के दृष्टिगत तथा मरीजों की देखभाल के लिए राजकीय महाविद्यालय कालका में पूरी तरह से संचालित कोविड केयर सेंटर स्थापित करने के निर्देश दिये हैं।

जिलाधीश द्वारा जारी आदेशों के अनुसार पुलिस उपायुक्त सभी कोविड केयर सेंटरों पर आवश्यक सुरक्षा उपलब्ध करवाना सुनिश्चित करेंगे। एसडीएम कालका को कालका में स्थापित कोविड केयर सेंटर की निगरानी के लिए ओवर आॅल इंचार्ज नियुक्त किया गया है। इसके अलावा सिविल सर्जन पंचकूला को निर्देश दिये गए हैं कि वे संबंधित कोविड केयर सेंटर पर सभी आवश्यक दवाइयों तथा अन्य प्रबंध करना सुनिश्चित करें। तहसीलदार कालका श्री विक्रम सिंह को राजकीय महाविद्यालय कालका में स्थापित कोविड केयर सेंटर में सभी प्रकार की रसद सामग्री पहुंचाने के जिए इंचार्ज नियुक्त किया गया है। इसके अलावा खण्ड विकास एवं पंचायत अधिकारी पिंजौर को संबंधित कोविड केयर सेंटर पर स्वच्छता बनाए रखने तथा भोजन इत्यादि की व्यवस्था करने के निर्देश दिये गए हैं। कालका नगर परिषद के कार्यकारी अधिकारी को केन्द्र की नियमित साफ-सफाई, सैनीटाईजेशन तथा ठोस व बायोमेडिकल कचरे का निपटान करवाने के निर्देश दिये गए हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त जन स्वास्थ्य अभियांत्रिकी विभाग के कार्यकारी अभियंता केन्द्र पर नियमित पीने के पानी की आपूर्ति सुनिश्चित करेंगे।

DST- UKIERI Workshop starts at PU

Indo-UK partnership development workshop started at University Institute of Engineering & Technology (UIET), Panjab University (PU) here today.

The prestigious workshop is being jointly organised by UIET and Birmingham City University, UK from January 05, 2022 to January 07, 2022 under UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) in Hybrid (Physically/Online) mode with the support of Department of Science and Technology (DST) and UKIERI on the issue of “Solar pump based village microgrids – potential for tackling the energy/water/food nexus in Punjab”.  

The scientists, engineers, economists and political scientists from different Universities of UK and India such as PAU Ludhiana, CCSHAU Hisar, NIT Kurukshetra, PU Chandigarh, Jammu University, Govt. of Punjab, NABARD and BCU UK etc. would participate in the workshop. While following the latest pandemic protocols, few participants from India joined physically whereas remaining from India and UK joined through on-line mode.

Former Advisor World Bank and COO in UN Sustainable Energy for All, Mr Mohinder Gulati delivered the keynote address. Mr Gulati highlighted policies related to various World Bank supported projects such as Direct Benefit Transfer Experiment in Punjab and Rajasthan Study on “Grow Solar, Save Water, and Double Farmer Income”. Consequent upon, the important talk on Solar Power as a Remunerative Crop and SKY Implementation Experience was presented by Dr Shilp Verma, from International Water Management Institute.

Indian Lead Coordinator Prof. Yajvender Pal Verma welcomed the guests and presented theme of the workshop. He also presented a case study related to the technical and economic feasibility of a solar pump based microgrid system in the villages of Punjab. The lead coordinators from UK, Prof. Cham Athwal, Prof. Lynsey Melville presented the context of the workshop related to Village Micro grid.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. J.K Goswamy Director UIET PU Chandigarh. Delegates from UKIERI Miss Henna Jairath, Dr. Jaya Goyal, Prof. Sunil Labroo from New York State University, Members from Punjab State Technical Council and British council were present during the inaugural ceremony. 

Prof. J.K Goswamy Director UIET PU Chandigarh presented his views on the concept of the workshop and emphasis on the practices to be adopted for developing the smart villages in Punjab.

During the next three days, various experts from engineering, economics, Social Science, management start-up, industry and power companies will deliberate upon the issues related to energy/water/ food nexus in Punjab and come out with some practically feasible solutions to address the same.  The focus of the workshop is to address the issues of depleting water level and energy requirement for irrigation pumps in the state of Punjab. This workshop would also explore joint research collaborations with a potential of creating innovations and social impact through industry or society engagement. Workshop would establish new research links with institutions in both countries with the potential for longer term sustainability.
