The online Art Initiative,’How Green Was My Valley ‘ was conceived as  a  curatorial initiative by  Art History and Visual Arts Department Panjab University Chandigarh , in association  with Manasollasa Art, showcasing Art in the times of quarantine and social distancing due to Covid-19 pandemic 2020   , a situation that completely  changed  our perspective towards life and thus, connected  us globally more than we could ever have imagined . It is a time to sit back and recapitulate on how we as humans have hurt nature..Prakriti ,  whom we address as our Mother in the Indian parlance.

‘How Green Was My Valley ’, has been  contextualized and curated  by   Dr. Tirthankar  Bhattacharya, Chairperson to  delve into the relevance of Art owing to its therapeutic and visual appeal . The participants are artists   , art lovers and art connoisseurs.  The Initiative that he undertook while sitting at home received an  overwhelming response from colleagues,  friends , alumni & students breaking the geographic  barriers , making it truly International  .   34 entries were received  from Chandigarh, Delhi, Assam, Bangalore, Calcutta, Uttarakhand from India and from New Zealand taking the show beyond national boundaries.

Raam Jator & Avin Sharma, PhD Research  Scholars  helped in coordinating this Initiative which included  structuring  ideas to designing the attractive online  exhibition and  collating the art works .

The Panjab University, Chandigarh including Regional Centres,
Constituent and Affiliated Colleges shall continue to remain closed
till May 17, 2020, informed Prof Karamjeet Singh, Registrar.

In addition, the guidelines being issued/released  by the Government
of India  from time to time will also be applicable.  These will be
communicated separately, as and when these are received.

Prof. Jaspal Kaur Kaang Co-ordinator Deptt of Punjabi USOL and
Academic  Incharge of Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Panjab
University participated  as Chief Guest in Webinar organised by Lovely
Professional University today on the theme ,”Impact of Covid 19 on
the Indian education System “.

Many teachers from Panjab University, various other colleges faculty
and Research scholars  took part in the discussion  during the webinar.

Prof. Kaang emphasied on  developing and learning technological skills
during the lockdown period. She also said that this is need of the
hour that technology  should be made available to the remotest of the
areas at cheap rates. She further stressed on adopting the principles
and teaching  of Gurbani to develop mental and physical strength to
fight the present Critical situation  due to pandemic covid19.

Online Session on Virtual Labs

An Online Session on Virtual Labs was organized by University
Institute of Engineering and Technology(UIET), Panjab University,
Chandigarh on April 29, 2020 through webex. The Virtual Labs is an
initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) under the
National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT). The expert for the
session was Mr. Prateek Sharma, Senior Field Engineer and Trainer,
Virtual Labs, IIT Delhi. He has been providing training to faculty and
students of different Nodal Centers across the country. UIET, Panjab
University, Chandigarh is one of the Nodal Centers of the Virtual Labs
Project IIT Delhi.

This event was a great success with presence of around 40 faculty
members of the organising institute and the other adjoining
institutions nearby Chandigarh. This online session included an
introductory presentation which included basic idea, need, motivation,
objectives, features and impact of Virtual Labs Project by the expert
followed by the practical session of the Virtual Labs. The workshop
motivated faculty members to explore different experiments and
practicals virtually within short span of time and with ease of
access. This would also ensure continuous learning for the students
during adverse conditions such as the present pandemic covid-19 and
prepare institutes and their faculty members for online practical
training and experimentation. The session was appreciated by all the
participants.

Blood donation camp at PU

Blood donation camp at PU

Total 64 units of blood was collected at Blood Donation Camp organised
here today by Panjab University Non Teaching Employees Federation  at PU Campus with
the help of Deepak Kaushik, Inder Mohan, Satish Kumar, Inder Dev
Patial, Vijay DOGRA, Raj Kumar, Nitin Punj, Naveen, Pankaj Ram Parshad
and others.

A large number of people participated despite of current situation due
to Covid19 pandemic.  President Deepak Kaushik thanked the Team of
Doctors and Technicians of PGI which performed the duty and also
assured the team that the Federation can organise  more camps in case
any emergency arises in near future.

PU Update on Hostels

A Hostel staff, a resident of Bapudham Colony who attended party thrown
by a positive COVID case from the Colony, was traced from Panjab
University, Chandigarh Boys Hostel No. 1.

For Detailed News-

He stayed in the servant quarter located at the hostel after he was denied entry
to Bapudham Colony for only one night and the next day the police took
him from the Campus and his tests are being carried out.

Warden Rajeev Kumar informed that PU Hostel no. 1 is being sanitized
immediately and around 20 students staying in the hostel at present,
have been advised to immediately maintain the social distance. The
food will also be served in their rooms only.

He added that PU Authority is also considering of initiating
appropriate action  against the concerned Hostel Staff who concealed
the information about his association with the positive COVID case.

Further, the PU Authority is in the process of taking feedback from
the Hostel/Security/Horticulture and other staff  who are coming from
outside University for work. As a precautionary, Standard Operating
Procedure for smooth working of University during lockdown is being
framed , informed Prof Navdeep Goyal, PU Fellow and Chairman of
Advisory Committee of PU.

PU Update on Hostels

PU Update on Hostels

On the basis of communication sent to students of the Girls Hostel no.
8, 9, 10 and International Hostel , Panjab University, Chandigarh to
take their belongings since these are to be converted  into COVID 19
Isolation Unit by Chandigarh Administration, today around 350 students
have taken their belongings from all these hostels, informed Prof
Neena Capalash, DSW(W).  They have been given time till 26 April,2020.
However, they still can collect their belongings from the University
till the hostels are handed over to Chandigarh Administration.

Kids and Vaayu Joins hand for Zero malaria Day

On World Malaria Day, 25th April 2020, Panjab University, Chandigarh
and PGIMER, Chandigarh released a pamphlet from the famous comic
series of Kids, Vaayu & Corona. The awareness material created by the
team shows that Kids and Vaayu Joined hands together for zero malaria.

Dr Suman Mor, Chairperson, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab
University mentioned that Malaria is life-threatening disease, which
spread to humans through infected mosquito bites. The most common
symptoms of malaria are fever, chills, and flu-like illness and
disease could be lethal if left untreated. Therefore, it is important
to create awareness and provide knowledge and information about the
causes and spread of Malaria.

Dr Ravindra Khaiwal, Additional Professor of Environment Health,
Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER,
Chandigarh mentioned that World Malaria Day is celebrated every year
on 25th April and theme of this year is “Zero Malaria Starts with us”.
He further stated that, while during lockdown, we remain mostly
indoor, it is important to destroy mosquito breeding sites in and
around your home and remain safe.

The awareness material shows that Vaayu and Kids joined hand together
to create awareness and identifying mosquito breeding sites and
destroying them jointly. Vaayu motivates children’s to regularly check
sites, where mosquito hides and breed like such as standing water in
containers, flower pots & saucer, standing water around trash or
dustbin, garden ponds. Kids need to identifying mosquitoes breeding
sites and destroyed to control malaria, which is a carrier for malaria
parasite.

The leaflet highlighted the importance of mosquito net, protective
clothing, mosquito repellents, keeping netted doors and windows
closed, besides replacing standing water with damp sand in flower
pots, changing water for bird daily, cleaning Drains and roof gutters
regular to minimise the vector borne diseases.

Covid-19 Testing in PU

Covid-19 Testing in PU

The Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, has identified four
centers in Chandigarh – Mohali region for “upscaling the testing
capacity for Covid-19” whenever in future the need arises in the wake
of  increased cases. These centers are IMTECH, IISER, INST and PU
which will be working on the Hub and Spoke model. IMTECH will serve as
the Hub for collection of samples and processing them afor
inactivation or RNA isolation and then will distribute these, along
with kits, to the Spokes centers i.e. IISER, INST and PU for testing.

For Detailed News-

PU is already in the process of preparing itself for testing and is
completing the ground work. PU has nine RT PCR machines in different
departments and a database and working conditions of all these have
been prepared, informed Prof Prince Sharma,Dean,Faculty Science. PU is
readying its BioSafety Level 2 lab with equipment for carrying out the
testing work. He shared that  PU has a pool of around 40 research
scholars who are ready to volunteer to carry out RT PCR tests. Out of
these, a group of 10 has been identified as trained manpower who are
adept in RT PCR technique. Whenever the need arises, these research
scholars will be given a short training and they will be ready for
testing. They may be provided hostel facility for accommodation or
curfew passes.

Since IMTECH will provide samples in isolated RNA form or inactivated
form, there will be no fear of getting any infection, he added.

PU MDS Counseling Schedule issued

Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) First Year admission schedule for Dr.
Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences, Panjab University,
Chandigarh for the session 2020-21 has been resumed in consonance with
the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India notification
w.e.f. April 20, 2020, informed Dr Jagat Bhushan,
Principal-cum-Professor . The schedule approved by the Ministry
specifies this round of admissions to be completed by May 4, 2020,he
added.

Accordingly, the schedule and all other details for MDS admissions in
dental institute has been intimated on website of Dental Institute
i.e. http://dentalsciences.puchd.ac.in and desirous candidates have
been advised to get the updates from it. Last date to apply for this
course is April24, 2020.
