ONE WEEK GLOBAL ALUMNI MEET (VIRTUAL MODE) KICKSTARTED AT PU

Panjab University Alumni Association triumphantly surmounting all odds in these tempestuous times and keeping upbeat and orchestrating “Global Alumni Meet”. One of the idiosyncrasies of this event is the agglomeration of the alumnus from across the globe that too in virtual mode. Day 1 of the global alumni meet witnessed the ‘Tryst with illustrious alumni: Reminiscences and roadmap’, a journey from the “Portals of PU” to eminence by some acclaimed doers of the society.

Prof. Anupama Sharma, Dean Alumni Relations said that this is fortuitous and momentous occasion for PUAA to have the eminent and distinguished alumni who have already carved a niche for themselves in their careers. She highlighted the details of the meet which was followed by the virtual tour of Panjab University. Professor R K Singla, Dean University Instructions flagged off the ceremony by welcoming the alumnus bringing laurels and accolades to the institution and always delivering worth more than the expectations. He also emphasized the heritage created by PU and the synergy that it acquaints to at two different levels defining the alma mater as the intellectual capital of the university. The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Professor Raj Kumar enchanted the fact the even the hardships of a pandemic could not resist the belongingness that the alumni converse. He proudly cherished that sky is the only limit with the potential possessed by the past and present generation of this unparalleled teaching and training institution.

Smt. Keshni Anand Arora, IAS, Former Chief Secretary, Haryana  Chairperson, Haryana Water Resources Authority shared her thoughts on global alumni meet and praised this extraordinary initiative  of   collaborating   with  alumnus from all walks of life in tandem she also appreciated the  video made by PUAA as it brought the good old memories of campus back  which she had  rejoiced during her childhood as her father was a professor in Panjab University at that time. She was explicitly astounded by the conducive environment that the university provided and remembered how qualities instilled by PU helped her  and her 2 sisters who later on graduated to the rank of  chief secretaries and also made her daughter  an IPS officer. She proposed a dynamic platform and dynamic database to aid students from a well structured network and get suggestions from alumni about their careers. She also talked about how she has been  associated with leadership courses for quite a long period of time now and wanted to do even more like  providing  mentorship to the students who want to be in civil services. She ended on the note saying that she is ready to go an extra mile for the  University.

Dr. Aditya Narayan Purohit, Padam Shree Awardee talked about his experience how he entered PU and what was atmosphere of  PU at that time. He did not have any fellowship at that time  and got Rs 30 as a typist and  how then  a science fair was organized which turned out be a game changer for him and Prof. A.C.Joshi inaugurated the same. Prof Joshi  came to his stall and asked questions from him and when he came to know that he  was not  being offered fellowship because he  had come from other institute  he was awarded fellowship by changing rules in just  4 days . That’s how his journey at PU started.  He laid emphasis on such kind of culture  and conducive atmosphere to be prevelant in  PU  which not only strengthens and accentuates minimization of  gap between students and teachers but also fosters a sense of equality and inclusiveness and also  induces  free flow of communication and interaction which are the institution’s biggest asset.

Sh. Ashwani Pahuja, ED & Chief Sustainability officer, Dalmia Cement explained how PU is his 2nd home. He cherished those days as best days of his life and time he spent at student centre having coffee. He said this nostalgia could  make us laugh and cry which is happening today. He also highlighted how such meets provide an opportunity to reflect on the learnings and achievements they have adored so far and also described this platform as a stepping stone for starting a conversation regarding the climate change and sustainability crisis that the whole world is facing and how compatriots can come together to initiate a change. He also made it prominent that how it is the time to become a part of the solution. Then he talked his experience in cement sector and how he utilized his learnings from the university. He also focused on making India carbon based economy by changing to renewable energy, green hydrogen, green methane and advanced biofuels. For this to happen, students and universities have to rethink , reinnovate which can be done by doing more research, changing curriculum to today’s time.

Mr. Vikas Kaushal, Global Head, A T Kearney, divulged a lot of information regarding his college days especially  hostel no 3 and 6 and reminisced that wonderful time How getting basic education form great faculty and environment played a big role and how it prepared him for the future. Then he elucidated his journey of 20 years of working in global firms and his experiences in the changing world where stakes are much higher, diversity of views, and explosion of information and skills are coming in at a much faster pace and how trends are changing from globalization to nationalism, Business decision cycles have  shortened at the same time due to uncertainty, consumer behavior is changing. So students need to increase their exposure, learn what is  happening globally and look for options which were not present earlier. And for university he urged to provide conducive environment for learning, adopt new ideas, bring in industry and overall enriching environment which helped him in anchoring whatever he has become today.

Ms.Lalita Sachdeva, UNICEF, India also pointed out how delighted and humbled she was  to be a part of the PU family and the gist of it that drives her to be the change and work for it. She feels forever indebted for the multi disciplinary skills manifested by PU in students which endeavours them to take up society’s interest also in addition to there personal accomplishments. Development of empathy towards environment and engagement with communities to stand and deliver has been the stand out contribution that PU has been successful to make is the biggest achievement she felt.

Concluding the first day of the global alumni meet organised by PUAA, Professor V.R Sinha, Dean Research proposed a formal vote of thanks to the ones attending the meet and also to the ones who took  excruciating efforts and worked doggedly and meticulously  to make it happen and contributing to make it a resounding success. He also appreciated the time such esteemed stalwarts devoted towards this event and also felicitated for all that they have done, have been doing and will continue to do so. Dr. Monika Aggarwal, Associate Professor, UIAMS moderated the session. Lastly the event was concluded after Punjabi folk presented by Dr. Tejinder Gill, Assistant Director, Department of Youth Welfare, Panjab University. The Cultural Coordinator was Prof. Navdeep Kaur, Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University.

WEBINAR- “SUSTAINABLE LIFE STYLE AND ENTREPRENUERSHIP”

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, (UIFT & VD) and Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a webinar titled “Sustainable Life Style and Entrepreneurship” today.

Dr Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights & Duties welcomed the speaker Ms. Ritika Sadana, founder of Eco Karma, Uttarakhand, Dehradun.

Introducing the resource person Dr Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson of UIFT & VD, spoke about the accomplishments of Ms Ritika Sadana, a young social entrepreneur, a strong team player with outstanding team building, communication and interpersonal skills, analytical bent of mind and thorough problem-solving skills, qualities that are important for any start-up or business.

Ms. Ritika Sadana, elaborated different facets of sustainability. She said that we are directly and indirectly involved in activities that contribute to a rise in greenhouse gases on this planet and thus lead to Carbon Foot Printing. She stressed that though in all operations, we cannot have zero waste but we can all strive to produce low waste at an individual level. For this, efforts or initiatives have to be taken up on daily basis. It is important to have ‘conscious thinking’. The focus should be on reduction, reuse, recycle and recycling. The participants were shown products such as curtain tie ups, toothbrushes, door mats, etc. These are produced by different self-help groups in various areas. She also voiced for local production. She discussed how her team works on Waste Management- a Nagar Nigam project where new is created out of the waste.

She also spoke about Wood free colour pencils prepared out of newspapers and seed pens and encouraged the students to create the same as well. Many important topics were discussed at length, such as sustainable lifestyle; the value of 5R’s & Upcycling; sustainable living through social entrepreneurship etc. The webinar was interesting and engaging. It ended with the question answer session. The resource person also stressed that giving back to the community is vital. So their organization uses 50 percent of their income for the welfare of animals (especially dogs). She urged the participants to select an activity that can add something to others’ well-being and make this planet a happy place to live.

Eco Karma deals with eco-friendly products handmade by SHGs in India. It is a firm based in Dehradun operating with the motive towards Arthika-Kutumba-Samaja Vikas. They make and sell only the biodegradable and more sustainable products like, Bamboo Toothbrushes, Recycled paper pens, Bamboo & wheat straws, coconut shell products, Organic Body Butter, Balms & Soaps etc., in-house and with help of Women self-help groups. Their motive is to move towards sustainability, encourage women to stabilise and make this place more liveable.

More than 100 participants attended the webinar: faculty members from university and various colleges, research scholars and students.

Online Faculty Development Program on ‘Effective Communication in the Digital Era’ commences at Panjab University

A seven- day online Faculty Development Program on the theme ‘Effective Communication in the Digital Era’ organized by Human Resource Development Center, Panjab University commenced today. The course has diverse audience from various disciplines and different states including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chandigarh. The key note speaker for the inaugural session of the seven-day program was Prof. Hemant Joshi, senior media educator and former professor from IIMC. Prof Joshi spoke to the faculty about the skills required for effective digital communications. He pointed out the skills of Speech, Writing, Visual Literacy and Digital Literacy as a must for being an effective communicator on digital platforms. He also stressed upon the need to educate ourselves about the digital media. He also mentioned the significance of logicality, context and background to make the communication effective.

Dr. Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director, HRDC, Panjab University spoke to the audiences and informed about the various activities being conducted by the Center. Dr. Bhavneet Bhatti, Course Coordinator and Assistant Professor, School of Communication Studies, shared that, “Digital Platforms have become ubiquitous and especially during the Covid-19 pandemic and online working atmosphere it is significant to learn to communicate effectively on the digital platforms, thus the need was felt to have a training program on the theme of Digital Communications.” She added that, “Resource Persons from across the country and abroad from various fields will be delivering lectures on the topics like, Digital Communication and Fact Checking, Healthcare and Digital Platforms, Digital Media Literacy, Digital Storytelling, Ethical and Legal Dimensions of Digital Communications to name a few.

Later in the day, Prof. Anubhuti Yadav, Head, Dept of New Media, IIMC delivered a lecture on ‘Fact Checking and Digital Communications. With a number of examples, Prof. Yadav was able to share a number of tools which can be used to verify the credibility of news and information shared online. In an enriching and interactive session, Prof. Yadav was able to train the faculty in using online tools for fact checking.

The seven day program will see sessions on various aspects of Digital Communications.

ENACTUS TEAM OF PU DISTRIBUTED FACE SHIELDS AMONG THE FRONT LINE WORKERS OF THE UNIVERSITY

The Enactus team of Panjab University collaborated with Enactus IIT-Delhi and organised a fundraising campaign “Together We Care”, to distribute face shields to the frontline workers of Panjab University. A total of 1100 face shields were procured by the team from the funds generated through the campaign, informed Prof. Seema Kapoor.

Prof. R.K.Singla, Dean of University Instruction, Panjab University distributed face shields among the Sanitary Workers, Security Staff, Health workers and Hostel Mess Workers of Panjab University in the presence of other dignitaries who graced this occasion including Prof. S.K. Project Dhra aims to replace plasticware with earthenware, combat plastic pollution and help community of potters to earn a sustainable source of income. Project Uday has two-fold objective- Women Empowerment and reducing both plastic & textile pollution.

She added that serving humanity is an integral part of Enactus Panjab University team. Continuing the tradition of service towards humanity, Enactus Panjab University has once again set an example. Due to the ongoing pandemic, a lot of people, especially the frontline workers have become seriously prone to the deadly coronavirus. Seeing the grave situation,  the team took initiative of distribution of face shields. 

The event was coordinated by Yash Tripathi, Meesha and Nandini & Harleen Singh, student members of Enactus team. Mr. Akshat Kaushik, President of Enactus team informed that the team further plans to distribute the rest of the Face Shields to the Health Workers of Development Indigenous Resources-India (DIR), an NGO and averred that the team is leaving no stone unturned in this harsh situation.

7 Days Online Workshop concludes at Dr.SSBUICET, PU

Various eminent speakers delivered a talk on different topics of statistical tools
used for effective research. Dr.Tilak Raj from UBS discussed the concept of index
numbers and their calculations and also highlighted their importance in various
fields.

Prof. Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, UIPS delved on the topic of Quality by Design (QbD)
with interesting case of pharma industry. Dr. Pooja Arora, Scientist from NIPER
discussed topics such as sampling design, validity, reliability, demand forecasting
etc. Dr. Tejinder Pal explained basis of research and non-parametric tests in
greater detail.

Hon’ble Justice Sh Adarsh Kumar Goel Releases booklet on“GREEN VERDICTS-2020”

Hon’ble Justice Sh. Adarsh Kumar Goel, Chairperson of National Green Tribunal, released the booklet “GREEN VERDICTS-2020: A report highlighting the key judgments by NGT year 2020” which is compiled by Dr. Suman Mor, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Department of Community Medicine & School of Public Health, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh for bringing awareness and highlighting the importance and impact of NGTs judgments in empowering communities, protecting the environment and promoting better health for all.

In his keynote address, Justice Shri Adarsh Kumar Goel highlighted the role and mandate of NGT to provide environmental justice and protect the public’s legal rights. He mentioned that there is a need to ensure sustainability for the protection of the environment and health. He highlighted that NGT is committed toenvironmental protection, conservation of forests and other natural resources, including enforcement of any legal right relating to the environment and giving relief and compensation for damages to persons and property, especially for vulnerable communities. He urged to increase awareness on local environmental issues and asked the educational institutions to take initiatives for their holistic solution. He appreciated authors’ efforts in disseminating information through informative booklets, which will help to communicate technical information in simple language to the general public and motivate them for greening their actions.

Prof Davinder Kumar, Secretary to VC, Panjab University, highlighted that the university provides a healthier environment for its research scholars and academicians to work for solution-oriented research focusing on local and issues. Dr. Suman Mor, Chairperson, Department of Environment Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh, emphasized that public participation is the key to resolving environmental challenges. She highlighted how the Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, actively involved in national environment-related programs such as National Clean Air Programme and Swachh Baharat Missions. Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Department of Community Medicine & School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh, highlighted the concern of increasing environmental pollution and related health impacts. He mentioned that empowering the community, educating them and creating awareness among them will help in solving these problems for the betterment of environment and public health.

The booklet ‘Green Verdicts 2020’ is presented with information on various environmental issues and will help to engage individuals to develop a deeper understanding of local and regional environmental issues and have the skills to make informed and responsible decisions to ensure environmental sustainability.

The event was graced by Justice Jasbir Singh, Justice Pritam Pal, Smt. Urvashi Gulati (IAS), Shri Subodh Aggarwal (IAS) and Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal. More than 200 participants from various universities and institutes attended the event.

PU VC felicitates Employees for Commendable Work

The Vice Chancellor Panjab University Chandigarh,Prof Raj Kumar today felicitated employees for commendable  contribution , in addition to their own seats, towards efficient and smooth functioning of the University. The names of employees were finalised to give honour/incentive for suitably awarding them on The Independence Day,2020 but due to Covid19 , it was postponed.

PU allows Hostel Stay for Research Scholars

The Panjab University has allowed stay in the Hostels  of Sector 14 Campus for all the eligible research scholars only, who have experimental work in the laboratories and have completed 2 years after enrolment/registration and who were staying in the hostels in the session 2019-20, with the consent of their respective supervisor, informed Prof Sukhbir Kaur, Dean Student Welfare(W).  Research Scholars of hostels of Sector-25 will be adjusted in Sector-14 hostels. She added that the residents will have to follow the following conditions:

a)           Covid-19 test is must for research scholars, done within a week prior to joining hostel accommodation.

b)    An undertaking will have to be submitted by the research scholars to the Warden of the hostel forwarded through the concerned Chairperson of the Department that they will follow SOPs.

c)           All the residents are also advised to go through SOPs provided in the hostels and to adhere strictly.

d)          Food will be served through tiffin (lunch box) on cash payment basis.  Residents are advised to bring two tiffins to take precautions during the present situation of Covid-19.

e)           Guests/visitors entry is not allowed till further orders.

f)            Minimum number of messes/canteens will be opened and the residents have to collect their tiffin from Contractors.

g)           Facilities of shops (barber/beauty parlour, tailor, tuck-shops, washer man/washer woman etc.) will not be provided for the time being till further orders.

The research scholars who have completed more than five years after enrolment be allowed to avail hostel facility on daily charges.
