The 4th Sat Paul Mittal Memorial Lecture on “Future Trends in Telecommunication” was held in hybrid mode under the Bharti Chair in Telecom & IT Research on June 09, 2022, at 11:30 AM in UIET, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Mr Avinash Agarwal, Deputy Director General (Convergence & Broadcasting), Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), DoT, Government of India delivered the talk starting with an introduction and the mission of the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC).

The speaker described the evolution of telephony as how the 5G network evolved from existing fixed-line telephones. He also stated the impact of telecom evolution on lifestyle, Jobs and home services. The transformations in broadcasting were discussed along with its key technological developments. He traced the evolution of 5G starting from 1G analog, 2G digital, 3G mobile data, and 4G mobile broadband. Several 5G use-case scenarios were discussed including the areas of enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine-type communications (mMTC), and ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC). Also, he deliberated upon the deployment strategies of 5G worldwide including various challenges in the Internet of Things (IoT), technical challenges include connectivity, reliability, cost, policy challenges including IPR, governance and some common challenges like standards, interoperability, security and privacy. He also talked about the status of 5G roll-out in India and the rise of the 6G network along with its key characteristics.

The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in the telecommunication industry was reviewed, specifically concerning the 5G network. The presentation delivered by him also touched upon the concepts of the technologies that made IoT possible. The industrial internet of things (IIoT) is the use of smart sensors and actuators to enhance manufacturing and industrial processes. He also discussed IoT and M2M technology with the difference between these technologies. Also, he stated the need for Green Telecommunication and why it should not be ignored. He also discussed IPv6 and its advantages over IPv4 and the reason behind TEC promoting IPv6 based telecommunication devices. Towards the end of his talk, Mr Agarwal discussed several ITU-T Study & National Working Groups. He stated that students can contribute to these groups mentioning the benefits of contributing as well.

Dr Veenu Mangat welcomed all the guests and introduced Sh. Sat Paul Mittal who was elected twice to Rajya Sabha for a term of six years each in 1976 and 1982. United Nations decorated him with the prestigious United Nations Peace Medal in 1987. Dr Neelam Goel introduced the rich legacy of Panjab University and shared the genesis of the setting up of the Bharti Chair in Telecommunication and IT at UIET. She detailed the scope of activities of the Bharti Chair from teaching to innovation and industry interaction. The profiles of Bharti Chair, Prof. Pamela Kumar and Dr D. N. Singh were introduced. The activities conducted under the Bharti Chair in the last couple of years were shared during the event. Professor Pamela Kumar, Visiting Professor Bharti Chair, introduced the distinguished speaker and set the context for the lecture and the vision for future activities. Prof. Krishan Kumar proposed a vote of thanks for the guests, organizers and all attendees.

Bharti Chair in Telecommunication and Information Technology was established in UIET, Panjab University in 2002 by Bharti Telecom Group in the memory of Late Sh. Sat Paul Mittal who was a visionary leader. For this purpose, the endowment was given by Sh. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Enterprises for enhancement of knowledge in the field of telecommunication.

The event was held under the mentorship of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University (Chief Patron), Prof. Renu Vig, DUI, Panjab University (Patron), Prof. J.K. Goswamy, Director, UIET, Panjab University (Co-Patron). Prof. Roopali Garg, Dean Student Welfare (Women), Panjab University was the Convenor of the event and Dr. Neelam Goel, Assistant Professor, UIET, Panjab University was the Co-convenor of the event.

More than 220 faculty members/ research scholars/ students along with external stakeholders participated in hybrid mode. The lecture was highly informative and interactive.

Seminar “Defence & Warfare: Emerging Paradigms” organized at Panjab University

Department of Defence and National Security Studies (DDNSS), Panjab University and Panjab University Institute of Social Sciences Education and Research (PU-ISSER) in collaboration with Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) organised a Seminar on June 8, 2022. The Seminar on the theme “Defence & Warfare: Emerging Paradigms” was held at ICSSR Complex, Panjab University, Sector 14, Chandigarh.

The Key Speakers of the Seminar were Col. Nitn Chandra (retd.) and Maj. Gen. Amarjit Singh (retd.). Col. Nitin Chandra spoke on Space based Imagery Intelligence (IMINT) signatures of Military Targets. Maj. Gen. Amarjit spoke about the sixth generation of Warfare, the current way of conducting warfare as we see around us today. 

Dr. Jaskaran Waraich, Chairperson of Department of Defence and National Security Studies, Panjab University welcomed the delegation and introduced the theme. Prof. Sanjay Kaushik, Director of Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) delivered the opening remarks. He highlighted the relevance of the topics to be discussed and spoke about how the defence and security paradigms are changing across the world. 

Col. Chandra explained how satellite imagery is used to identify enemy military targets. He also explained how some of this imagery may be misinterpreted and discussed the best practices on how to analyse satellite imagery using open source systems

Gen. Amarjit explained how warfare, now, is not limited to Kinetic means anymore but is increasingly involving NBIC(Nano, Bio, Info, Cognitive) Sciences. Everyone, be it a soldier or an ordinary citizen, is the target of the 6th generation warfare and the war is fought by altering the way of thinking of people by using psychological tools and weaponization of brain sciences. According to him, the military power construct of the world is changing from economic to Data (Information) and Hyper Connectivity. 

The Seminar concluded with vote of thanks by Prof. Simrit Kahlon. who thanked the key speakers for their invaluable inputs and highlighted the importance of the topics discussed at the Seminar.

Dr. Shiv Kumar, Chairperson of the department initiated the webinar welcoming resource person and participants. Prof. Preeti Mahajan, Coordinator of today’s webinar introduced the Resource Person and theme of the webinar. Prof. Nirmal Kumar Swain, Resource Person, from Department of Library and Information Science, Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Haryana delivered the talk on “Research and the world of citations”. Prof. Swain highlighted the significance of citations in academic writing.

He said that every source used in academic writing must be cited in order to uphold intellectual honesty (or avoiding plagiarism), to acknowledge or give credit to other people’s work, to allow the reader to determine independently whether the referenced material supports the author’s argument in the claimed way, and to help the reader gauge the strength and validity of the material the author has used. He deliberated on the circumstances during the writing process on what to cite, when to cite and when not to cite. He suggested that less number of cited documents should be used except the matter, which genuinely supports or corroborate our research.Today’s webinar was attended by 85 participants from all over the country.  Mayor gives appointment letters to new recruits

Chandigarh, June 6:- Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Mayor, Chandigarh and Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today called upon the newly recruited officers/officials of MCC to come forward and live up to the responsibilities.

While congratulating them, the Mayor said that it is essential to maintain people’s confidence and faith in public service delivery system and it can be achieved through determination, dedication and devotion. She asked them to provide responsive administration at the base level stating that Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has always accorded high priority to public service delivery.

PANJAB UNIVERSITY CONVENED AN ANTI TOBACCO CAMPAIGN

National Service Scheme, Panjab University, Chandigarh conducted an Awareness Rally on Anti-Tobacco Day on 31st May, 2022. More than 100 Volunteers from various departments actively participated in the rally, and raised slogans to make people aware about ill effects of using tobacco. The rally started from 11:00 A.M. from Gandhi Bhawan and was concluded at Law Auditorium after passing through Boys Hostel 2&3. Dr. Naveen Kumar, Dr. Amita Verma, Dr. Anuj Kumar, and Dr. Simran Preet, programme officers flagged off the rally. Faculty Colleagues including Dr. Anupam Bahri and Dr.Karan Jawanda graced the occasion with their presence.

A special lecture on ‘Awareness about Breast Cancer’, in collaboration with Centre for Public Health, P.U., Chd. was organized for the residents of GH-6 today in the premises of Girls Hostel No. 6, Mother Teresa Hall, P.U., Chd.,  under the guidance of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, P.U., Chd. and supervision of Prof. Jagtar Singh, DSW, Prof. Meena Sharma, DSW(W) and Prof. Ashok Kumar, Associate DSW, P.U., Chd. 

Dr. Manoj Kumar, Asstt. Prof., Centre for Public Health, P.U., Chd. was the Chief Guest on this occasion.

Dr. Manisha Sharma, Warden, Women Hostel No. 6 welcomed and introduced Dr. Manoj Kumar to the audience.

Under the able guidance of Dr. Savita Prashar, Co-ordinator, Centre for Public Health, P.U., Chandigarh, Mrs. Harpeet Kaur Dhaliwal and Ms. Harneev Kaur Saini, students of Centre for Public Health, P.U. Chandigarh has explained about the Breast Cancer. They said about the types of Breast cancer, risk factors and sign & symptoms of breast cancer. They also told how to detect breast cancer by self examination i.e. BSE(Breast Self Examination), clinical breast examination. They explained about the treatments of breast cancer such as surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiation therapy and targeted therapy. They also told how could we reduce the risk of breast cancer i.e. by eating healthy, being active and by avoiding smoking and consuming alcohol.

At last, Dr. Manisha Sharma paid a vote of thanks to the speakers and the Chief Guest on this occasion.

A health check-up camp was also organized after the lecture for the staff, residents and mess/ canteen workers of the hostel.

बैत बाज़ी में ग़ालिब ग्रुप ने बाज़ी मारी

पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय चंडीगढ़ के उर्दू विभाग द्वारा बैतबाज़ी का आयोजन किया गया, जिसमें उर्दू  फ़ारसी विभाग के छात्रों ने उत्साहपूर्वक भाग लिया।कार्यक्रम में दो राउंड हुए, छात्रों ने  उर्दू भाषा के प्रमुख कवियों की मानक कविताओं का पाठ किया और शेरों की अंत्याक्षरी  में सफल रहे, मात्र पन्द्रह सेकेंड में हर प्रतिभागी को शेर पढ़ना था जिसकी वजह से अंत तक दोनों प्रतिभागियों ने कशमकश का माहौल बनाए रखा,जिसकी वजह से मुक़ाबला अंत तक बहुत रोचक रहा,जिसमें निर्णायकों ने अंतत:ग़ालिब ग्रुप को विजेता घोषित किया।

    इस ग्रुप में,राशिद अमीन नदवी,ख़लीक़ उर रहमान,जसप्रीत सिंह,बशीर,सुमेघा वैद,जेपी सिंह,नाज़िर, राम,मानिक व वीना आहूजा ने भाग लिया।

 विजेता टीम को ट्रॉफी से सम्मानित किया गया और सभी प्रतिभागियों को स्वर्ण पदक और प्रमाण पत्र से सम्मानित किया गया।

   इसके अलावा, हाफ़िज़ ग्रुप को सिकंड पुरस्कार के रूप में ट्रॉफी व रजत पदक और प्रमाण पत्र देकर सम्मानित किया गया।

 इस ग्रुप में मुहम्मद सुल्तान, सुदीप सिंह, विदुषी चंदेल, मनीज़ पनेसर, तरणजोत सिंह, मनदीप सिंह, परमवीर सिंह, रमनप्रीत, कार्तिक ने भाग लिया।

   अपने शुरुआती वक्तव्य में उर्दू विभाग के संयोजक और अध्यक्ष डॉ. अली अब्बास ने बैत बाज़ी के सिद्धांतों और नियमों के बारे में बताया और कहा कि उर्दू विभाग की तरफ़ से  पंजाब यूनिवर्सिटी के इतिहास में पहली बार यह बैत बाज़ी प्रतियोगिता आयोजित की जा रही है।  उन्होंने कहा कि बैत बाज़ी  से छात्रों में शायरी व अदब का ज़ौक़ और सही शायरी पढ़ने का जुनून भी पैदा होगा।

 उर्दू और फारसी विभाग से सर्टिफिकेट, डिप्लोमा और एडवांस डिप्लोमा और परास्नातक के छात्रों और शोधार्थियों के उत्साह को देखते हुए डॉ. अब्बास ने कहा कि जल्द ही विश्वविद्यालय के विभिन्न विभागों और चंडीगढ़ के विभिन्न कॉलेजों के बीच बड़े पैमाने पर बैत बाज़ी का आयोजन किया जाएगा.

   कार्यक्रम में विशिष्ट अतिथि के रूप में भाग लेते हुए डॉ. रेहाना परवीन ने कहा कि कार्यक्रम अपेक्षा से अधिक सफल रहा।  विद्यार्थियों ने मानक शायरी को बहुत ही अच्छे ढंग से प्रस्तुत किया।छात्रों के उत्साह को देखते हुए ऐसा नहीं लगा कि विभाग में पहली बार यह बैत बाज़ी का कार्यक्रम आयोजित किया जा रहा है।

    कार्यक्रम में बतौर जज  ‘तामीर ए हरियाणा’ के पूर्व संपादक और कवि डॉ. सुल्तान अंजुम ने कहा कि बैत बाज़ी कभी उर्दू के लोगों की पहचान थी, शिक्षकों की कविताओं को याद करना, उन्हें महफ़िलों में पढ़ना एक सराहनीय कार्य माना जाता था।  एक समय था जब कायस्थ घराने की शादी पार्टियों में बैत बाज़ी एक अनिवार्य रस्म थी।  लेकिन आजकल उर्दू के साथ-साथ बैत बाज़ी का शौक़ भी मद्धम पड़ता जा रहा है.  उर्दू विभाग में आयोजिन

World Hypertension Day

To commemorate the World Hypertension Day (WHD) Mehr Chand Mahajan, Boys Hostel no.1, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a free blood pressure checking camp and awareness program on May 17, 2022. Health camp was inaugurated by Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Warden, Boys Hostel No. 1. Prof. Jagtar Singh, DSW(M) graced the occasion. Dr. Manoj Kumar, Ph.D (Public Health) was resource person on this occasion. Screening was done by a team from the Public Health Department, Panjab University which included Dr. Ashwani Kumar Rana, Dr. Gursimran Kaur, Dr. Kunal Singh and Dr. Vidhi.

Around 65 residents, staff members and mess workers within the age bracket of 25-60 years were screened for their blood pressure on this occasion. Around 16 candidates were diagnosed with high blood pressure. They were counselled and guided by the team regarding the healthy eating habits, lifestyle changes, stress and anger management etc. They also recommended details health examination to these candidates.

 Orientation regarding gender-based discriminations organised

Centre for Social Work, Panjab University, Chandigarh has organised three days workshop (13th, 14th  May, & 16th May 2022) regarding an orientation to gender based discrimination by Professor Jyoti Seth, Head (Retd.) Department of Sociology, Post Graduate Govt College for Girls sector 42, Chandigarh. The session started with the brief discussion on Gender and sex, she explained that gender which is not male and female but man, woman, and transgender. Gender discrimination is faced by mostly women and transgender’s. This discrimination is because of patriarchy that is prevalent in India from roots and to remove this discrimination not only women have to speak about their right but also men have to change their views. Individual and group activities were performed which made students made to think about various topics (dowry, domestic violence, sayings about men and women, against birth of girl child etc.) which are main factors leading to discrimination. The session was interactive and group activity further refined the learning process of the students. The masters in social work students and research scholars participated in the workshop.

Dr. Gaurav Gaur, Chairperson alongwith Prof. Jyoti Seth answered the queries related to the theme asked by the students. The students asked questions from live-in-relationship, marriage, divorce and cultural practices prevalent in our society. Panjab University Coffee Table book Released

Prof. Raj Kumar (Vice Chancellor, Panjab University) released the book titled, ‘A Peek into the Heaven’ by Gaurav Gaur and Prabhdip Brar. The book is unique in its effort of capturing the essence of Panjab University campus during the 2020 nationwide lockdown. Prof. Renu Vig (Dean University Instructions, Panjab University) and Prof. Y P Verma (Registrar, Panjab University) also graced the occasion.

Prof. Raj Kumar congratulated the authors and appreciated the exemplary efforts of Dr Gaurav Gaur in capturing the unprecedented visuals clicked through a simple mobile phone camera. He further advised that the book be made as a Panjab University Souvenir that can be presented to delegations at various Panjab University events.

Dr Gaurav Gaur (Chairperson, Centre for Social Work, Panjab University) shared his experience of bringing together the coffee table book. He said that, ‘The book is an effort in capturing the different emotions and expressions of nature in PU campus during the nationwide lockdown’. He further said that when people could not step out of their homes, he took this as a challenge and opportunity to document the different flavours of life at PU campus especially the tranquility and solitude of the blossoming undisturbed natureß.

Dr Prabdip Brar, University Institute of Fashion Technology and Vocational Studies, a renowned artist of the city, who contributed by aptly captioning the pictures in the book said that this coffee table book would prove to be breakthrough and help in promoting the beauty of the campus.
