            3 Day International Conference by Indian National Cartographic Association (INCA) commences today on the theme Cartography for Self Relient India which is being hosted by Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

            The Chief Guest, Hon’ble Governor of Haryana, Shri Bandaru Dattatraya in his address said that the geo-spatial field has tremendous potential for generating employment in the country. He also mentioned that in the management of COVID-19 pandemic crisis, COVID maps proved beneficial. He further added that application of Geographic Information Sciences(GIS) has become a crucial part of how NASA gets to know the feature of other worlds, develops broader understanding of Geophysics and gathers valuable information about our own planet. He added that India will have a coherent national location data framework by 2030 which will assist the country to move towards E-Economics, E-Service and E-Commerce and will help improve services to the citizens. He highlighted the SVAMITVA , flagship scheme of Centre is reformative step towards establishing clear ownership of property in rural inhabited areas by mapping of land parcels using drone technology.

            Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU, while referring the conference to be prestigious platform, emphasised on the need to come up with an action plan to make cartography multi-disciplinary so that its knowledge can be shared with other domains.

            The Surveyor General of India, Mr. Naveen Tomar, in his keynote address,  focussed on the requirement of data collection on a large scale to make India a self-reliant nation. Also, he stressed upon the need of fresh blood to be injected into the system and also talked about public-private partnership in this regard.

            The Guest of Honour, Vice Admiral Adhir Arora, Chief Hydrographer, Govt. of India stressed on the sphere of marine cartography and spoke on the complexities of ocean mapping particularly in terms of huge funding and man power being needed for this task.

            Prof. Krishna Mohan, President of INCA, introduced the theme of the Conference, which he said aligned with the vison of The Government of India of “Reform, Perform and Transform”. It was followed by an inaugural address by Director of National Institute of Advanced Study, Bengaluru and Former Secretary, MoES, India, Dr. Shailesh Nayak. He emphasised on Maps to be a mainstay in the transformation of process of India under the vision of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.

            The felicitations of the dignitaries along with the winners were performed apart from release of books and maps. Prof. Gaurav Kalotra, Chairperson Department of Geography proposed vote of thanks.

Online Workshop at HRDC, PU

A 3-days online workshop began in the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh on “Competency Development in Critical Thinking” for research scholars who are registered for their Ph.D. programme.

            Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Haryana interacted with the participants and highlighted that critical thinking leads to problem solving which is a trait needed in every sphere of life. Observation, clear thinking, analysis and implementation are the different steps of critical thinking. It is a way of life which transforms you as a person & as a researcher.

            Prof. A.K. Nandakumaran from Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore delved upon the components of critical thinking and also shared his own experience of teaching critical thinking to students at a prime institute of India.

PU Scientists of Single-year impact(2020) in Stanford University Report

As many as 32 faculty scientists from various disciplines from Panjab University are included in the elite list of world top 2% scientists as per the Stanford University, Stanford, California, USA which is based upon a Single-year impact (year 2020). All the 17 scientists from the first list have made it to the second list also.

Data include all scientists who are among the top 100,000 across all fields according to the composite citation index. Composite citation index was calculated with a validated formula and machine learning approach was used to extract the data from Scopus programmed with a specific set of rules like citations, h-index, authorship status etc.On the basis of citations and papers, the scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields. Selection of the scientists in the list is based on the c-score criteria or a percentile rank of 2% or above, based upon the various publication metrics, including, Scopus H-index, co-authorship adjusted HM-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator.

17 Scientists from PU among World Top 2% Scientists

 As many as 17 faculty scientists from various disciplines from Panjab University out of 2042 Indian Scientists are included in that elite list of world top 2% scientists as per the Stanford University, Stanford, California, USA  which provided an updated analysis that uses citations from Scopus with data freeze as of  Dec 31, 2020, assessing scientists for citation impact during the calendar year 2020 that was published on October 19, 2021 in PLOS Biology, a peer reviewed high impact international journal available at https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/3. . There was great interest in the databases of standardized citation metrics across all scientists and scientific disciplines, and many scientists urged the authors to provide updates of the databases.

The recognition gives great satisfaction to all scientists working in varied research areas and motivates them to keep moving ahead despite all odds and financial limitations. All faculty members are putting their heart and soul in keeping the prestige of Panjab University as high as possible. Sincerely regular and joint efforts made by all faculty members maintain high research standards across all streams in Panjab University. Research Scholars and non-teaching staff also play key roles in attaining various research and academic goals.

Two lists have been created for the top 2% scientists. The first list which is based upon the Career-long data contains PU’s 17 scientists. Six out of these scientists belong to University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), three each are from Departments of Chemistry and Physics, while one each is from departments of Anthropology, Botany, Environmental Studies, Mathematics and UICET.

The second list which is based upon a Single-year impact (year 2020) has 30 scientists from PU. Almost all the scientists from the first list have made it to the second list also.

Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University said that it is indeed a moment to feel proud for the University that as many as 30 faculty members have made it to the coveted list of Top 2% Scientists of the World.It is a matter of great honour and prestige for the whole scientific fraternity of Panjab University, he added.

Police Commemoration Day at PU

 Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized ‘Shaheedon Ko Naman’ to mark the Police Commemoration Day today with Prof. Anju Suri, Dean International Students, as guest of honor.

            Prof. Suri lauded the role of police in maintaining peace and order in the society. According to her the members of the society specially the youth should be thankful to them and draw inspiration from the dedication and devotion shown by the police towards their duty. Later, she led faculty, students, and staff of the centre in paying homage to police martyrs by offering flowers.

            Prof. Anil Monga, Chairperson, Centre for Police Administration while welcoming the guests traced the history of Police Commemoration Day and said that on 21st October, 1959, a patrol party of CRPF was ambushed by the Chinese Army in Hot Springs, Ladakh, in which 10 police personnel were martyred. Since then this day is commemorated to pay homage to the police martyrs. He highlighted that the purpose is to create awareness and sensitize the students towards the sacrifices being made by the Police force.

            A documentary film “Wall of Valour” A Tribute to Martyrs was screened on the occasion. The Producer/Director of the documentary film Ms. Beenu Rajput while interacting with the students shared her experiences of making this film. She said that meeting with the families of police martyrs were a life time experience and their sacrifices are invaluable. She made an appeal that people should come forward and provide help to the families and children’s of the police martyrs.

            The event was attended by faculty, research scholars and students of Centre for Police Administration. Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Assistant Professor, Centre for Police Administration proposed vote of thanks to everyone present on the occasion.

Counting for Registered Graduate Constituency Begins at PU

The Counting for 15 Seats from the Registered Graduate Constituency for PU Senate has commenced today from 2.00 pm at Gymnasium Hall, Panjab University, Chandigarh. There were total 41 candidates in the fray for these 15 seats. The voting was held across 272 booths in two phases which concluded on Sunday i.e. 17.10.2021.

Panjab University has deputed around 200 employees for the purpose which includes Core Team of 4 officials, Assistant Core Team of 9 officials, 16 teams with 6 members each for counting and around 75 as supporting staff.

The first details comprising of valid and invalid votes is expected to be available on 19.10.2021 and thereafter, the first round of counting of first preference votes will commence and shall continue uninterrupted. After the first round, the counting shall continue on all working days from 9 to 6.

Webinar at USOL, PU

A National Webinar on the “Contemporary Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s Philosophy” was held today at the University School of Open Learning Department, Punjab University on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. Prof. Madhurima Verma, Chairperson, USOL welcomed the speaker and deliberated upon the relevance of Mahatama Gandhi’s philosophy.

            Dr. Manmohan Singh was the keynote speaker on the occasion. He referred to the thinkers who shaped Mahatama Gandhi’s personality and spoke of his philosophy. He emphasized upon understanding Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of non-violence, truth and Swaraj in a contemporary perspective.

            Prof. Pali Bhupinder Singh, a teacher and eminent playwright of the department thanked the guests for participating. The webinar concluded with a discussion between the speaker and the participants.

Exhibits by students of USOL, PU at CLKA Gallery

The Photography exhibition by the students of USOL, Panjab University was inaugurated at Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademy ’s Gallery at underpass connecting Sector 16 and 17, by Dr. Bheem Malhotra, Chairperson, Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademy (CLKA) and Prof. Madhurima Verma, Chairperson, University School of Open Learning, PU. The exhibition is supported by CLKA. A total of 20 students pursuing PG Diploma in Photography (PGDP) from University School of Open Learning (USOL), Panjab University, Chandigarh are exhibiting their 55 works. The exhibition is open till 19th October 2021 (Tuesday).

            Prof. Madhurima Verma congratulated the students for displaying their art work for the general public and motivated the students of USOL to further hone their skills and creativity. Dr. Bheem Malhotra interacted with artists and appreciated their exhibited works.

            The photography exhibition was curated under the mentorship of Jeesu Jaskanwar Singh, Coordinator, PGDP and CLKA and in informed that this exhibition is part of the practical paper in the curriculum. The works of Amandeep Singh, Arrush Chopra, Abhinav Poonia, Deepak Gupta, Amanpreet Kaur, Tushar Narula, Suresh Kumar, Sahil Chaudhary, Vikas Kapila, Shubhangi Ambashtha, Neha Sharma, Sourav Joshi, Sarabjit Singh Bhinder, Sakshi Gaur, Vishal Chauhan, Hargobind Singh, Gagan Mittal, Jagdeep Singh, Paramdeep Singh and Jaspinder Singh are exhibited in the Group Photography Exhibition.

            During the USOL’s Personal contact Programme (PCP) students got insight into various aspects of Photography from Sh. Swadesh Talwar, Kulbhushan Kanwar, Vikas Kahol, Pradeep Tewari, Guldeep Singh, Sudhir Baweja, Shivali Raj, Praveen Jaggi, Anurag Malhotra, Neetu Katyal, Rajni Chauhan, Hitesh Vig, Sukhjit Singh, Vikram, Arun Bansal, Kamal Kishore Shankar and Pawan Sing. Besides that, students learnt about art of exhibiting the photographs from Sh. Gurdeep Dhiman, Gursharan Kaur, Michaelangelo and Jaspal Singh. The exhibited works covers wide range of topics like wildlife, nature, street photography, photojournalism, night photography, art photography, etc.

Webinar on Continued Challenges of Corona Pandemic: Learning from Experience by PU

The Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a webinar on the topic “Continued Challenges of Corona Pandemic: Learning from Experience.”

            Prof. V.R. Sinha, Dean University Instructions, Panjab University, Chandigarh in his inaugural address accentuated the fact that though the pandemic created a havoc throughout the country it also had some underlying positive effects. It was only due to the emergence of this pandemic that the world recognized the power of Indian pharmaceuticals.

            Prof. V.M. Katoch, former Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) summarized the experiences of the 20 months of COVID-19 in India. He discussed the major factors which contributed to India’s success in controlling the pandemic. According to him the India’s response to COVID-19 has been stupendous and inspiring across all levels of the country. Further in his talk Prof. Katoch discussed how lethargy, negligence and undue optimism after the first wave of COVID-19 resulted in the emergence of consecutive waves. He also underlined the part which various initiatives such as “Jagrukta abhiyan” played in empowering the population for prevention and timely management of COVID affected persons and discussed the key factors relevant for such awareness programs. He also talked about the importance of Ayurveda and yoga and the role they played in combating the post COVID complications. Prof. Katoch laid an emphasis on the correct use of mask, social distancing, personal hygiene and special care of person in high risk groups since these are the only things which can help in making the entire situation a little less complicated.

            Earlier, Dr. Deepak K. Rahi, Chairman, Department of Microbiology and the organizing secretary of the webinar gave a brief overview of the program and discussed how COVID-19 has deeply affected the society, health system, economy, and government worldwide. He highlighted the fact that a year and a half later there are still so many lessons to be learned from this once-in-a-generation phenomenon.

Webinar on Calligraphy at UIFT

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT & VD), Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a Webinar  on ‘Calligraphy- A Journey in Itself’ today.

            The webinar was conducted by Ms. Priyanka Goyal, who is the founder and Creative Lead at @PriyankaCalliDesigns. She spoke about Calligraphy and its evolution into the digital form. She stressed on the need to first understand Pen and Ink calligraphy and further venture  into digital calligraphy. She shared insights into topics like Typography, Lettering art. The Application of Calligraphy on various mediums was also discussed, for instance graphic design, fashion and branding. She practically illustrated some nuances of this Art form, especially as a print or any other surface ornamentation technique on garments and lifestyle products. 

            Dr Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson UIFT & VD also shared her views on the importance of learning this art form and its usage in fashion. The students also interacted with the speaker and asked questions regarding the career prospects in this field.

            Rashi a student of B.Sc 1st semester was quoted saying ” It was amazing experience. I’m in complete awe of how beautiful the calligraphies were. And how effortlessly everything was explained. Honored to be a part of this for sure”.
