“Plastic free July 2019” celebrated

Chandigarh:

The Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University celebrated “Plastic free July 2019” by carrying out various outreach activities and awareness campaign at the GSSS Khuda Lahora. Prof. Archana Bhatnagar, Chairperson, highlighted that nearly ten billion plastic has been produced globally and ninety percent of that has never been recycled! This triggered the students of the department to meet school children so as to make them aware of harmful impact of plastic on environment by encouraging them to refuse plastic to create a clean and green city. The school children participated 
actively and promised to consciously work to reduce single-use items. This was done by way of quiz, sensitization of girl students towards biodegradable sanitary napkins which were also donated to the underprivileged girls by students. The program ended with tree plantation and tree adoption by teachers and students.

Panjab University organized a tree plantation drive in collaboration with the Mr. Rahul Mahajan of Social Substance and Horticulture Department of P.U

Chandigarh July 18, 2019

The Girls Hostel No. 8 of Panjab University organized a tree plantation drive in collaboration with the Mr. Rahul Mahajan of Social Substance and Horticulture Department of P.U. here today 18, 2019.  


        Sh. Vikram Nayyar, the Finance and Development Officer, P.U. inaugurated the drive by planting a sapling.  Prof. Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare(DSW) with Prof. Neena Capalash, DSW (W) and wardens of the hostels participated in the drive and they have also planted saplings.  The coordinator of the drive was Dr. Anupam Bahri, 
warden of GH8.  The residents along with the employees of the hostel also participated in the drive.  Saplings were also adopted by them.


        The students from Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 33 also participated in the drive and create awareness to save the environment.

A Tree Plantation Drive was undertaken by the Department of Life Long Learning and Extension in collaboration with Horticulture Wing of Panjab University

Chandigarh July 18, 2019

A Tree Plantation Drive was undertaken by the Department of Life Long Learning and Extension in collaboration with Horticulture Wing of Panjab University around the surrounding of Emerging Area Building, here today.  Firstly sprucing of the lawns and grounds around Emerging Area in Social Sciences Block was prepared.  Mowing of grass, weeds and wild growth was done.  Flower beds were prepared and shrubs and trees like Ficus were planted.  In addition to that, some herbs like Tulsi and Shrubs like Kaner and Chinese Rose were planted for beautification and ornamentation of the area.


                All the faculty and staff members of the Department actively participated in this drive and planted the plants. As desired by the Panjab University authorities, the programme was undertaken on the initiative of Dr. P.S. Kang, Chairperson, Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Tree Plantation was carried out in the Political Science Department, PU

Chandigarh July 18, 2019

Tree Plantation was carried out in the Political Science Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh with the assistance of Horticulture Department of PU. More than 30 plants of Cassiagulaca were planted in front of Arts Bloc No. IV (near parking side). The faculty, staff, students and Research Scholars of the Department were present. Dr. Navjot, Chairperson advised the students to plant more trees to keep the environment green, clean, safe and healthy. The students agreed to take care of plantations of these trees.

 In the series of events at the five-day induction-cum-orientation programme, a  photo exhibition was organized at University Institute of Applied Management  Sciences(UIAMS), Panjab University(PU) in association with Natural Biodiversity group  to create awareness about nature and its conservation. The exhibition was inaugurated 
by the Dean of University Instruction Prof. Shankarji Jha who inspired the students and faculty with his words of wisdom regarding importance of nature in their lives. 

Prof. Upasna Joshi Sethi, Director, UIAMS addressed to the students and faculty and motivated them to actively participate in conservation of nature which is a global concern.

Dr. Ashish Bhatia, COO, Fortis Health Care Ltd., Mohali delivered a talk on leadership and management to the newly inducted students in the MBA MBA sectoral programmes at UIAMS. He highlighted the essential traits that a manager must possess to take on the role of a leader, the most important being effective communication skills. He gave numerous examples from industry to drive in the point that it’s the positivity in attitude of the leader which will spell the success for the organization, whatever the business scenario be. He also apprised the students of the challenges being faced by today’s businesses, especially healthcare, and further informed about the key strategies to tide over these challenges effectively.

The students also interacted with Mr. Jubin Mehta, AGM, SEBI who talked about the role of SEBI in Indian Financial Markets. The students were inquisitive about the working of capital markets, the various scams in the capital markets and the role of management trainees in SEBI. 

Mr. Aman Chug, Chairman, All India Committee of CII/Advisor/Trainer motivated the students with his talk on ‘Realizing Your Passion’. He made the students aware about the value of time management in their personal and professional lives. The lecture was well appreciated by the audience.

National Conference on ‘Draft New Education Policy 2019’ concludes at PU

17th July 2019, Chandigarh :

The two day national conference titled ‘Draft New Education Policy 2019 : A Way Ahead’ concluded at Panjab University here today with recommendations and suggestions made by stakeholders to the draft of New Education Policy.

The valedictory session of the conference had a special address by Prof. Nagesh Thakur, member UGC. He spoke about integration of teaching and research, about relevance of values and ethics and the significance of mother tongue in teaching.

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU, in his address stated that optimum utilization of technology can help achieve better reach in education. He focused on including the component of ‘employability’ in the curricula. Prof Kumar also spoke about the concept of ‘resource sharing’ and developing business models for self sustenance.

Earlier, the  first session for the day was on ‘Governance and Administration of Education and Research’ and was chaired by Prof. Ramanjit Johal. The panellists for the session included Prof. Archana Bhatnagar and Prof. Khushwinder Singh. The session saw deliberations on functions of regulatory bodies and accreditation agencies.

 The second session for the day was a round table discussion and compilation of recommendations. The key issues raised included funding, teachers’ status, choice based credit system to name a few. Prof Krishan Kumar raised the important issue of constructing a norm on how teachers should be treated at educational institutes. Prof
Rajat Sandhir raised the issue of paying heed to manpower along with developing infrastructures.

Dr. Kuldeep Kaur, Co-coordinator CALEM presented the report of the conference and Prof. Latika Sharma proposed the vote of thanks.


The two day conference was organized by Centre for Academic Leadership and Education Management (CALEM) and Department of Education, PU, under the aegis of PMMMNMTT, Ministry of Human Resource Development, GOI. The recommendations made during the conference will be compiled in the form of a compendium.

Around 50 who  participated from the States of Punjab, Haryana and UT, Chandigarh included Chairpersons, Directors, Principals, Faculty and other stakeholders. There were 16 Resource persons for various sessions.
