The Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a webinar on the topic “Continued Challenges of Corona Pandemic: Learning from Experience.”

            Prof. V.R. Sinha, Dean University Instructions, Panjab University, Chandigarh in his inaugural address accentuated the fact that though the pandemic created a havoc throughout the country it also had some underlying positive effects. It was only due to the emergence of this pandemic that the world recognized the power of Indian pharmaceuticals.

            Prof. V.M. Katoch, former Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) summarized the experiences of the 20 months of COVID-19 in India. He discussed the major factors which contributed to India’s success in controlling the pandemic. According to him the India’s response to COVID-19 has been stupendous and inspiring across all levels of the country. Further in his talk Prof. Katoch discussed how lethargy, negligence and undue optimism after the first wave of COVID-19 resulted in the emergence of consecutive waves. He also underlined the part which various initiatives such as “Jagrukta abhiyan” played in empowering the population for prevention and timely management of COVID affected persons and discussed the key factors relevant for such awareness programs. He also talked about the importance of Ayurveda and yoga and the role they played in combating the post COVID complications. Prof. Katoch laid an emphasis on the correct use of mask, social distancing, personal hygiene and special care of person in high risk groups since these are the only things which can help in making the entire situation a little less complicated.

            Earlier, Dr. Deepak K. Rahi, Chairman, Department of Microbiology and the organizing secretary of the webinar gave a brief overview of the program and discussed how COVID-19 has deeply affected the society, health system, economy, and government worldwide. He highlighted the fact that a year and a half later there are still so many lessons to be learned from this once-in-a-generation phenomenon.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date of submission of online Fresh admission of all Masters, Bachelor & Diplomas programmes up to 11^th October, 2021 for the July-2021 session. This extension of last date shall not apply to Certificate and Semester-based programmes, i.e., MP, MPB, PGDMM, PGDFM, PGDHRM, PGDOM, PGDFMP, DBPOFA, PGDIS, MCA, BCA, and all Certificate and Awareness programmes of 6 months duration or less. Details of the IGNOU academic programmes for the July, 2021 session can be accessed from the link https://ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in/. The prospective learners can apply for Masters/Bachelor/Diploma programmes of the University on the official website, informed The Senior Regional Director of IGNOU Regional centre Chandigarh Dr. A.K.Dimri. Last date of submission of ‘online’ admission form for the July session was earlier fixed for September, 30.

For all those candidates, who have been planning to get admission in any of the IGNOU courses can apply for the same online. Firstly the candidate has to register themselves (if not registered) on the official website i.e https://ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in/. Whereas those who have already registered can simply login with the id- password and fill up the application form for the admission in the July session at Indira Gandhi National Open University for 2021. Also, before filling up the IGNOU admission form, candidates must go through the general instructions, eligibility criteria, fee details, duration, etc. on the official website. Applicants can also download the complete details of the programmes from the IGNOU website.

A meeting with the faculty of University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh was chaired today by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice chancellor, PU with regard to scope for improvement of NIRF Rank of UIPS to No. 1. Prof. VR Sinha, Dean of University Instructions, PU  was also present.

            At the outset, PU VC extended his congratulations to UIPS for achieving NIRF Rank 2. He urged on focusing and identifying thrust areas keeping in mind the interdisciplinary collaborations to march towards excellence. The need of the hour is also to keep in mind the policies of Government of India while keeping an eye on international perspective also. PU VC added to explore avenues for consultancy and industrial collaborations and associate with NGOs for societal outreach.

            The department submitted their request for filling the vacant posts of their department in order to meet the deficit and ensure that teaching and research is not affected. Even, the request to adjust serving staff at UIPS against vacant technical positions was submitted to the Vice Chancellor. It was further requested that the Phd Fellowships be provided to the UIPS researchers, so that UIPS can enrol them for the same. PU VC assured of all possible help for the growth of the department. He also assured of upgradation of various UIPS labs.  

Prof. Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson, UIPS also discussed scope for improvement of NIRF ranking by proposing solutions for various NIRF parameters. The department strongly requested to divert more funds to UIPS. The department also asked to increase the hostel seats for the Masters programme.
