For Detailed News-

Dr.Kuldeep Singh, Chairperson introduced both the Theme and speaker of the webinar. In his introductory address he started with the role of Police in today’s Scenario.  The resource person, Dr. Vibha Sharma, Head of Department of Public/Police Administration talked about the transformations witnessed in the role of police during the ongoing pandemic crisis of COVID-19. She stated that, in recent times, police has become more community and social oriented. It has assumed an array of new roles ranging from regulatory role to humanitarian role. This, consequently, has built a real time positive image of police among citizens during this crisis. She highlighted that several new challenges shall be faced by police in this “New Normal” situation moving from lockdown to unlock phase during COVID-19 and in its aftermath. There shall be need to revamp the police organization and policing techniques and methods to tackle the new challenges arising out this pandemic.

However, she pointed that for sustenance of such role transformation, the government should provide adequate resources (both physical as well as financial) to police organizations. In addition, community cooperation and community participation has been imperative to reinforce this evolving role of police. The citizens, local government and voluntary organizations should bring about both change in their attitude and perception towards police. They should inculcate a sense of affiliation and humanity towards the police personnel and their functions. She, therefore, concluded that this ‘Evolution’ in the role of police needs to be taken up in the ‘Revolution’ mode for long lasting impact.

For Detailed News-

Amidst the difficult times of COVID-19, when all humans were locked down in their houses and no-one was allowed to step out from their place.  At those times the stray animals particularly dogs had to face a tough time because most of them who were fed by the regular feeders, suddenly came to a halt. A similar situation had also hit the stray dogs of  Panjab University campus, as almost all the hostelers went back to their native places. The residential area was taken care off quite well by the local residents but the dogs residing near departmental buildings situated in sector- 14 and particularly 25 were difficult to reach.

Keeping this in mind, the problem of feeding the dogs was well addressed by the security guards placed at these buildings at their own. This continued but the number of dogs was more than one hundred and a lot of food or dog feed was required to fulfill their everyday needs.

Hence, an organization called as Humane Society International/India (HSI/India)was contacted by NSS, Panjab University to support this cause in the crisis of Corona, said Gaurav Gaur,  NSS, Program Officer.

Ms Swarnali Roy, Campaign Manager, North India was contacted and very graciously she accepted the request after talking to Ms. Alokparna Sengupta, Country Director of HSI/India. Since, that day this organization is supporting the dog feed for more than one hundred dogs from almost six weeks and is continuing till date,  informed Navdeep Sharma, Program Coordinator, NSS.

For coming forward and providing this unconditional support and wonderful service for these living beings the whole  NSS,  Panjab University family will remain indebted to HSI/India, said Gaurav Gaur.

Navdeep Sharma said that hopefully this organization will keep on supporting for this noble cause.

Prof. Kaang focused on the point that there was no concept of ‘Shahadat’ in the Indian Culture and Tradition prior to Sikh religion. The word ‘Shahadat’ comes from Islam as in which their was  a great tradition of giving one’s life to save the honor and glory  his own religion. But Sikh Religion has its own concept of ‘Shahadat’ in which there is a rich tradition of giving ‘Shahadat’ to save other’s Religion. Guru Arjan Dev ji sacrificed his life to save people of India from the oppression of Mughals . Similarly Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji gave his ‘Shahadat’ to protect Kashmiri Hindus and Pandits.
