Most of Indians are aware of equity trading but very few are well informed about trading in commodities. Keeping this in mind, University Institute of Applied Management Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised a session on “Awareness about Commodity Derivatives and Hedging Mechanism”. More than 130 students, faculty members and people from industry attended the session.
Prof. Upasna Joshi Sethi, Director, UIAMS extended welcome to speakers of the webinar, Mr. Sanjay Ghakar, Vice President, Multi Commodity Exchange India Ltd., and S. Prabhakar, Regional Head, Securities Exchange Board of India and Mr. Chander Nath Pandey, MCX . In her address she said commodity trading is mainly done as part of a diversification strategy. Don’t put all eggs in one basket. Investors should invest in shares, bonds, commodities, currencies, etc. to get better returns.
Mr. S. Prabhakar, Regional Director, Securities Exchange of India apprised the audience on Role of SEBI, mandate of SEBI to protect investor, risk associated with investments and do’s and don’t of trading in market. He advised investors to invest wisely.
Mr. Sanjay Ghakar, Vice President, Multi Commodity Exchange of India in his address spoke about MCX platform ecosystem, the types of commodities traded and the regulatory framework for it. He highlighted that Average Daily Turnover for MCX was about R. 32000 Cr where Spot, future, forward transactions are traded daily in Bullion, Energy, agriculture and metal & alloys. He advised investors to stay away from a promise of getting fixed return on investing in MCX.
Professor Sanjeev Sharma, Professor,UIAMS proposed vote of thanks. He said that since UIAMS is starting MBA (Capital Market ) programme from this year. This webinar is step towards that direction and will strengthen industry-academia interaction.

A team of wardens Dr. Rajeev (BH-1), Dr. Praveen (BH-5), Dr Nidhi Gautam (GH-5), Dr Jai Mala (GH-7) and Dr Avneet (WWH) organised a webinar for the hostel residents on the topic “Healthy Diet to fight COVID-19” by Nutritionist Dharamjit Singh ji, retired from Agriculture University, Gwalior.
The talk was on the healthy diet to be taken during this Pandemic. He recommended everyone to follow the traditional diet which was followed by our ancestors like air, water, sun and healthy food. He suggested everyone to have sun bath for at least half an hour daily during morning hours for Vitamin D. He emphasized on breathing exercises to boost our immunity for the proper supply of oxygen to our body cells. He advised to have water from the earthen pots. According to him RO water systems are not healthy for human body as it destroys all the minerals from the water. He advocated to have at least three earthen pots so that one can be used for water, second filled with water and put outside for 24 hours so that it can have sun and air, third one must be dried under the sun to avoid fungus. He suggested to keep a rotation of these earthen pots for proper utilization. He also advised everyone to add sprouts, seasonal fruit and soya milk to the daily diet.
This webinar was attended by the more than 70 participants. There were lot of queries by the participants for which organizers have decided to arrange more such webinars.
Chandigarh, June 10:- A meeting of the Environment & City Beautification Committee of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh held here today under the chairmanship of Sh. Hardeep Singh and attended by other members of the committee namely Davesh Moudgil, Sh. Rajesh Kumar, Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Sh. Davinder Singh Babla and other concerned officers of MCC.
During the meeting it was discussed and decided that Tertiary Treated water supply be made available in all the big parks and green belts throughout city. The members were of the view that all the 5 entry points of Chandigarh be beautified and agenda in this regard be prepared. The committee members asked the concerned engineers to communicate the recommendations of the committee regarding pruning of trees inside the school premises, whose branches falls either on road or road berms.
The members asked the concerned officers to prepare proper schedule of plantation of trees and shrubs throughout city and put up in the next meeting. The committee decided that theme based plantation be done on V-3 roads. The committee asked the concerned officers to repair the damaged water hydrant in the park to avoid leakage of potable water.

Children & Young Environmentalist Conference on Environmental Protection (CoEP 2020) was organized jointly by Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh, Ankur School, Chandigarh, Chandigarh Pollution. Control Committee (CPCC- Chandigarh), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), North Region, Chandigarh, Health Care Without Harm & Lung Care Foundation. This conference provided a platform to engage eminent scientists, students, & children together to build a sustainable society, which cares for our common future. This event is first-of-its-kind focusing on children and youth with an aim to create awareness & sensitize them about the environment.
Focusing on the theme of World Environment Day – ‘Celebrating Biodiversity,’ & considering the current global situation due to COVID19 an online opportunity session was arranged for the school children under which various competitions were held. More than 350 participants registered for the event. In the morning session, class wise performance of school children were done on the themes including making a family tree with a message on Save Environment (Class 1-2); Slogan writing on Tree Plantation (Class 3-4); Pot painting (Class 5-6) ; making paper bags along with slogans (Class 7-8) and creating best out of waste (Class 9-12) . . In the first session, the moderators Dr. Parminder Duggal, Principal, Ankur School, Chandigarh, Dr. Suman Mor, Chairperson, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Additional Professor-Environment Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh emphasized the saying “we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children, Considering this , it is a time to reflect on our relationship with Nature and surroundings, and focus on the planet’s long-term survival.
Prof R.K Singla, Dean of Universsity Instructtions, Panjab University while appreciating the efforts of organizers, emphasized that we are experiencing irreversible biodiversity loss at an unprecedented scale. It is collective duty of each of us to preserve environment enough to keep our place habitable for the coming generations.

Debendra Dalai, IFS, Director of Environment & Chief conservation of forests & Wildlife, UT, Chandigarh highlighted that the increasing human activities is resulting in adverse health implications and impact on livelihood. He emphasized that it is high time to embark on a regime of sound policy enforcement and aware people about the challenges and the need for environment conservation.
Prof. A.S. Raghubanshi, Director, Institute of Environment & Sustainable Development, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, keynote speaker delivered talk on Understanding our rich Biodiversity and need to protect it. He taught about the fragile nature of the environment that we live in and devise ways on how to preserve it for the generations to come.

Hatwal, Joint Director, MoEFCC, North Regional Office, Chandigarh. ,Prof. Arvind Kumar, Chairman, Centre for Chest Surgery, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, India; Founder & Managing Trustee: Lung Care Foundation, India Children & Health highlighted basic aspects of air pollution and focused on Vulnerability of Children to Pollution & Need for Special Care. He stressed on how air pollution is affecting human health and various organs including brain development, IQ, lungs etc. Prof. Prashant Kumar Founding Director, Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE) Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of Surrey, UK shared his views on COVID & Pollution. How COVID-19, though having bad effect on health, has helped in a positive way to rejuvenate the nature. The second session was chaired by Sh. T.C. Nautiyal, IFS, Member Secretary, Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, Chandigarh and Dr. Vikas Singh, Scientist SE, National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL), ISRO, Gadanki, Tirupati. During the second session, Dr. Suman Mor, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh enlightened the participants on various tools of Engagement with Children on Environmental Communication – Kids, Vaayu & Corona. On this special day dedicated to our Environment, there is need to raise awareness and inspire individuals to take action by changing their lifestyles. She highlighted the ways to boost the interest of school children to involve in environmental awareness activities. She discussed best practices such as public health shield and efforts to sensitize children to fight covid-19.
Ms Matrushri Shetty, Director Program, Lung Care Foundation presented on “Role of Young Citizens in Environment Protection – Leading by Example “. She encouraged and inspired the students that how students can take initiatives to create world record to bring attention to the growing menace of air pollution, anti cracker movements, online campaigns, zero waste movements etc.
Session was chaired by Mrs. Shweta Narayan, Coordinator Healthy Energy Initiative India Dr. Parminder Duggal, Principal, Ankur School, Chandigarh During this session young budding environmentalists Asees Kandhari (Student, Grade XI) Fridays For Future , New Delhi shared words on promoting renewable energy to combat climate change by making strict decisions to survive on this planet. Aarushi Joshi, (Student Grade-X, Ankur School) stated that for better future creating environmental awareness among the masses and by bringing lifestyle changes for the good development of social and economic life is must.
Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Additional Professor, PGIMER highlighted the importance for caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. Valedictory was addressed by Prof G.D. Puri, Dean Academics, PGIMER, Chandigarh who appreciated the efforts of PGIMER and PU to involve children and young in this conference so that they carry this learning forward for the lifetime. इस अवसर पर बोलते हुए पी सी एम ए के अध्यक्ष डॉ अश्विनी भल्ला ने कहा कि विश्वविद्यालयों को कालेजों को इस कोविड के समय अटानामी दी जानी चाहिए तथा अध्यापकों द्वारा दिये आंतरिक मूल्याँकन तथा पिछले समेस्टर का आधार लेकर तुरन्त नतीजो की घोषणा की जानी चाहिए। उन्होंने कहा डिजिटल डिवाइड को समाप्त करने के लिए सभी टी वी चेनल का 50% समय कक्षाओं के लिए आरक्षित किया जाना होगा तथा गरीब तथा गांवो में इंटेरनेट तथा बैंडविड्थ की कारगर व्यवस्था करनी होगी। म्युनिसिपल करपोरेशनज़, पंचायतों को सदृढ़ व्यवस्था से इस डिजिटल डिवाइड को पाटना होगा। उन्होंने संस्थाओं को खोलने से पहले स्टैंडर्ड आपरेटिंग प्रोसिजर को कारगर बनाने के लिए व्यापक कार्य करने होंगे तथा स्वास्थ्य विभाग से सर्टिफिकेशन के बाद ही संस्थाएं खोली जानी चाहिये।

Panjab University, Chandigarh received grant of Rs 7.5Crores as the first instalment towards Innovation hub under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shikhsa Abhiyan (RUSA) for establishing Hub for Entrepreneurship, Employability and Innovation against grant of Rs 50 Crores by the Ministry of Human Resource Development . The Grant consists of two components – Rs 15 crores, of which first 50% instalment is received by PU for Innovation Hub, whereas Rs 35 Crores exclusively for research,which is awaited.
Professor Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University has been making efforts for this project by presenting the same in a new format after which PU was successfully awarded grant of Rs 50 Crores by the Ministry of Human Resource Development .PU VC informed that the grant from RUSA will impact on the growth as well as ranking of the university . This is also a blessing for the fund starved university where very little is available for research, infrastructure and innovation. Lately University also submitted additional project for Rs 20 Crores for infrastructure development for which final approval is awaited. The proposed Hub will give unique blend of skill development and startup as well as incubation possibilities to all budding students of the university from all sections not only from the university campus, but also from the all colleges situated in Chandigarh,he added.
Professor Rajeev K. Puri, University Coordinator for RUSAelaborated that this grant will be spent in creating new facility for State of Art Incubation center for which new building is proposed, for Skill development and for pre-incubation centers at various departments of the university as well for shaping soft skills of the students for various sections so that we can prepare the students for better jobs in the markets. The incubation center will also support start ups with soft support via loan or seed money so that their proposals, as well as new innovations can be transformed into industrial platform. He further elaborated that this incubation center as well as pre-incubation hubs will be very fruitful for the university as these will eventually not only help in jobs prospects, but at the same time will give budding entrepreneurships as well as startups all facilities under one roof that ranges from incubating the idea to its market selling aspects.

Department of Biophysics, Panjab University in collaboration with Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, India organized a webinar on “Immuno profiling and Immune Function Analysis of T cells in Covid-19: A flow Cytometric Perspective” on 5th June.
The webinar was convened by Dr Sarvnarinder Kaur, Chairperson and Dr Naveen Kaushal, Assistant Professor of Department of Biophysics. Over 90 participants from different departments and institutes attended the webinar.
Prof. V R Sinha, Dean Research, PU inaugurated the webinar. In his opening remarks Prof. Sinha appreciated the efforts of the organizers for putting up a webinar on the role of immune system during the Covid-19 pandemic. He emphasized that in current challenging times such events sensitize and motivate the students, research scholars and scientists to actively contribute in research pertaining to similar areas.
Earlier, Dr Sarvnarinder Kaur appreciating the encouragement by Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor in organizing such events on the topics of academic and scientific interests, welcomed the participants and introduced the speaker Mr Mukund Joshi, Analyst-Field marketing, Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, India. She shared her thoughts on the effective and constructive use of technology as preferred mode of communication during Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr Mukund the speaker of the day introduced SARS-COV-2 as public health emergency. Discussing the role of immune system, particularly T cells as important mediators in the initiation and progression of the COVID, he apprised the attendees about the versatile use of Flow Cytometry as an efficient prognostic and diagnostic tool in COVID research. He also gave a detailed perspective on intervention workflow and safety aspects related to COVID research. During the interactive session, queries related to immune based profiling, safety issues and immune modulations during reinfections were discussed.
