PU Student is Miss Universe 2021

It is a moment of great pride for Panjab University that the student of its affiliated college, PGGCG 42, Chandigarh Ms. Harnaaz Sandhu, an actor/model has been crowned Miss Universe 2021 beating contestants from 79 countries to bring home the title after 21 years.

UIPS Professor bags Mid-Career faculty award of UGC

Prof Ranju Bansal of University Institute of pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University has been bestowed with Mid-career award by UGC, India with a  grant of Rs. 10.00 lakhs  under this scheme

Mid-Career Award aims to augment the research efforts of active mid-career faculty members and support them with the research incentive. . She will be working on ‘Repurposing steroidal drugs as possible agents against neurodegenerative disorders using virtual screening and experimental techniques’ in this project.

 Dr Ranju Bansal is an active researcher and is actively engaged in drug discovery research for cancer therapy and neurodegenerative disorders. She has published her research work in high profile journals and has supervised more than fifteen doctoral students. Her work on anticancer and neuroprotective heterosteroids has been widely appreciated.

Mahaprinirvan Diwas at PU

A One day Webinar was organized by Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) Panjab University, Chandigarh to commemorate  the Mahaprinirvan Diwas of Baba Saheb Dr.B.R.Ambedkar, today by Ms.Kenu Agarwal Vice President, Community in Transition USA. 

Prof. Ashok Kumar, Director, CSSEIP and Professor in Hindi talked about importance of changing mindset of people to change the society and shared the significance of this day very elaborately by paying homage to father of our Constitution and remembering works of Baba Saheb Dr.B.R.Ambedkar. 

 

The session was moderated by Dr.Kanchan Chandan, teaching faculty, CSSEIP.  She stressed on following the ideology of Dr.B.R. Ambedkar, to bring the necessary change, for an unbiased and egalitarian society, and upliftment of the oppressed.

Ms.Kenu Agrawal in her lecture discussed how Babasaheb Dr. B.R.Ambedkar championed the cause of women as well as the miserable plight of Schedule Castes and Scheduled Tribes throughout his career and discussed a number of problems of Indian women and sought for their solution. She insisted on the way baba sahib looked upon law as the instrument of creating a sane social order in which the development of individual should be in harmony with the growth of society. As issue related to women inequality are global they are not only confined to Indian society. She further added that only Government Machineries or policies can’t be enough, people have to come forward individually with changed mindset to achieve the goal of gender equality and women empowerment. 

Prof. Ashok Kumar, Director CSSEIP extended vote of thanks and concluded by emphasizing, that women should themselves come forward to grab their rights and get hold of representative positions in all walks of life for a new and progressive India. It will lead to intellectual empowerment of masses.

PU Cylclothon to raise awareness on pollution

A Cyclothon Event from Panjab University Campus to Sukhna Lake was organised by NSS, Panjab University in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, PU to raise awareness on National Anti-pollution Day among students and general public.

 The cycle rally was flagged off by Prof. S.K. Tomar, Dean Students Welfare on 5th December 2021 at 7 am.  The event was organized by the NSS units headed by Dr. Rohit Kumar Sharma and Dr. Gaurav Gaur under the guidance of Prof. Ashwani Kaul, Programme Coordinator, NSS, PU.

 The NSS volunteers performed various cultural events including plays, songs and poems at Sukhna Lake to raise awareness about the pollution related issues. The cylothon raised awareness among more than hundred people on Sunday morning at Sukhna Lake about the severe effects of pollution on the environment and were given suggestions which they can include in their daily life to make a big change. The general public was made aware of the usage of cycling in preventing automobile led  pollution as well positive effects on health.

UIPS, PU receives Grant of Rs. 1 crore from its Alumni

Continuing in its legacy of excellence, UIPS recently procured a magnanimous grant of Rs 1 Crore under Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) from a multinational pharmaceutical company, M/s Mylan Laboratories Limited, facilitated by its alumni, Mr Rajiv Malik, President, Viatris, USA and Mr Sanjeev K Sethi, Chief Operating Officer, Viatris/Mylan, India. This is the highest grant received under CSR by Panjab University.

The grant will be utilized in establishing state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, procurement of sophisticated instruments and for generation of other facilities at UIPS, which will go a long way in accelerating the already upward growing graph of UIPS. This is defined under an agreement signed between the Company and Registrar, Panjab University. Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson UIPS, attributes continuous accomplishments of UIPS to the cohesiveness, hard work and persistent efforts of the globally acclaimed faculty colleagues, alumni and dedication of students.

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) is one of the most celebrated institute, not only within Panjab University but is also ranked nationally as number 2 Pharmaceutical Sciences Institute. WORLD AIDS DAY 2021

 Panjab University National Service Scheme Unit, in collaboration with University School of Open Learning (USOL) & Institute of Social Sciences Education and Research (ISSER), conducted a webinar on World AIDS Day, 2021 based on the theme ‘End AIDS, END INEQUALITIES, END PANDEMIC’.

            Prof. Ashwani Koul, NSS Programme Coordinator, Panjab University was patron for the event. The eminent speaker emphasized about AIDS and its spread. She discussed the symptoms, modes of transmission and marked that Prevention is the only cure for the disease. She gave importance to the regular health check ups. She also talked about the gender inequality. She urged to educate girls and make them aware regarding their health. She gave an immense knowledge regarding the AIDS and said we as a society must have sympathetic behaviour towards the Aids patients.    Master Sushant Arora, Student coordinator for the event presented the votes of thanks and then the names of the winners for the Poster Making competition were announced.

Department of Community Education and Disability Studies (Panjab University, Chandigarh) organized a webinar today with the theme of ‘Intervention and Teaching Strategies for Children with Neuro-Development Disabilities’. In this webinar Dr. Hemant Keshwal (Assistant Professor, National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, (Divyajan) NIEPID,  Regional Centre, Noida. U.P. India) was the Resource Person. Dr. Navleen Kaur (Chairperson) and Dr. Md. Saifur Rahman (Assistant Professor) introduced the resource person to the Participants. The participants were the students of B.Ed. Special Education semester I & III along with research scholars of the Department of Community Education and Disability Studies.

The webinar started with broadly four types of Neuro-Developmental disabilities i.e. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyper-activity Disorder (ADHD), Learning Disability (LD) and Specific Learning Disorder (SLD). He was also presenting some illustrations in between the lecture for making lecture more interesting and interactive. He also explained what the symptoms to identify such disorders. In his lecture he emphasized more on early assessment and the role of parents and teachers become very important to deal with child’s problem. He also elaborated upon the various assessment tools that are available for identification of these problems. Further he also provide interventions that can help in solving the issues related to Neuro-Developmental Disabilities. He is of the opinion that technology can contribute in a greater way to help the child in learning process. At the end of the webinar there was open discussion, in which all participants were taking part actively. The participants were very curious to know about the new knowledge about the concepts of developmental disabilities. It was completely an interactive session. Participants seems very enthusiastic throughout the session. They suggested that department should organize more session on regular basis.

National Pharmacy Teachers Training Programme Begins at PU

A one-week web faculty training school under the initiative of UGC Networking Resource Centre (UGC-NRC), onAttaining Quality Excellence in Drug Delivery Development & Research: Emerging Trends, Tools & Techniques in Pharmaceutics & Biopharmaceutics” from November 29 to December 04, 2021 was inaugurated today via Cisco WebEx at the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, for pharma faculty and researchers across the country.

A total of 68 participants were selected among over 80 applicants for training, hailing from various Colleges/Universities, representing 19 different states of India. The training school intends to apprise and update the young participants among faculty and researchers on diverse scientific and professional vistas of the pertinent domain of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, and to provide them a constructive milieu for exploring and exploiting the advanced approaches and appliances in the aforesaid pharmaceutical fields.

Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson, UIPS and Programme Coordinator, UGC-NRC, welcomed the participants and Chief Guest, and briefed them about the achievements of UIPS and UGC-NRC programs.

Professor Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, Course Coordinator, summarized about the course content to the participants, introduced the keynote speaker and conducted the proceedings of the event. Dr Gurpal Singh is the Joint Course Coordinator.

Professor Surjit Singh, Director, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, was the Chief Guest and shared his words of wisdom. He congratulated UIPS on being the premier and highly rated department of the Panjab University and delightedly shared the cordial and synergistic relation of PGI and UIPS.

Professor Dulal Panda, Director, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research (NIPER), Mohali, Punjab was the Keynote Speaker and delivered the Keynote Address on “Cancer Chemotherapy: Potential Role of Drug Delivery.” Professor Panda gave an overview of microtubule structural diversity originating from tubulin heterogeneities, and how cancer cells use those heterogeneities to acquire resistance against clinical agents.  Citing an existing successful attempt of Maytansine, he pondered on the need to formulate and develop new drug delivery system to counter the developed resistance. Further, he encouraged the participants to adopt Tubulin core as an emerging area by sharing research findings of potent delivery system of microtubule -destabilizing nanocomplexes for hepatocellular carcinoma cells.

Professor V. R. Sinha, Dean of University Instruction, Panjab University, presided over the event and shared his Presidential remarks. He appreciated the efforts of coordinators telling that course would be an ideal opportunity for the novitiate scientists to gain familiarity with diverse conceptual and practical aspects, ranging widely from laboratory research to its industrial commercialization.

Subsequent sessions included a lecture by Professor S P Vyas, Drug Delivery Research Laboratory, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Sagar, Madhya Pradesh on “Nanomedicine-Based Strategies for Purpose Specific Drug Delivery: Options and Opportunities.” The post-lunch session covered informative talks by Professor Vandana Patravale, Professor of Pharmaceutics, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, Maharashtra on “Computational Pharmaceutics: A Changing Paradigm in Drug Delivery” and “Nanotechnology-Based Drug Products: Regulatory Intervention” by Dr Amita Sarwal, Pharmaceutics Division, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

UIPS is the first and the only Pharmacy Institute in the country selected by MHRD for creating UGC Networking Resource Centre to promote and foster research and academics in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences by training young pharma trainers, selected across the nation.

Webinar on “Design Registration Process: An Insight” At UIFT & VD

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development (UIFT & VD) Panjab University Chandigarh held a lecture series Learn the ropes with Alumni by Dr. Charu Kohli, an expert in textiles on Design Registration Process: An insight. She pursued her PhD from UIFT, PU and developed a prototype for a reusable baby diaper.

            Dr. Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson, UIFT & VD, welcomed and appreciated Dr. Charu Kohli on her success in obtaining design registration for the reusable baby diaper. She also emphasised the significance of intellectual property rights for fashion design and technology experts.

            Dr. Charu Kohli shared her experience of registering a reusable baby diaper design. She elaborated on prerequisites and the procedure of filling out the documents to be submitted to the Design Wing of the Patent Office, which is located at the Intellectual Property Office in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. She expounded on the terms “copyright, patent, and trademark,” instructing students on the distinctions between the three. She explained registration sheet samples and design classifications. She emphasised that students should not be scared to take risks and step outside of their comfort zone in order to gain greater exposure and urged students who conduct study on designing products to register their designs.

            Students expressed interest in the webinar, which concluded with the resource person answering questions on filling and filing the application for the design registration. Around 50 students and alumni joined the webinar, which was organised by Ms. Parneet Brar, guest faculty at UIFT.

60TH NATIONAL PHARMACY WEEK CELEBRATIONS AT UIPS, PANJAB UNIVERSITY

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, in association with Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Punjab Branch and MHRD Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC-UIPS) celebrated 60th National Pharmacy Week 2021 keeping up with the theme ‘Pharmacists: Integral Part of Healthcare’ from 21st – 27th November 2021. 

The celebrations comprised of week-long online competitions and guest lectures, organized under the leadership of Prof. O. P. Katare (President, IPA, Punjab branch), Prof. Bhupinder Singh Bhoop (Vice President, IPA, Punjab branch), and Prof. Indu Pal Kaur (Chairperson UIPS; President, IIC-UIPS; Secretary, IPA, Punjab branch).

The week commenced with online competitions, beginning with poster competition on 22nd November, which observed enthusiastic participation. This was followed by a quiz competition and a debate on 23rd and 24th November respectively, with an estimated 100 participations from across the nation. The alacrity with which the students participated was beyond comments.

The week concluded with a Valedictory Function on 27th November with a Valedictory talk on the theme ‘Pharmacist: Integral part of Healthcare’ by guest speaker Professor Rajendra B Kakde, Advisor- I, Approval Bureau Head, All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi

The Valedictory function began with a welcome address by Professor Indu Pal Kaur followed by the presidential remarks by Professor O P Katare. Professor Poonam Piplani, Convenor, Lecture organising Team introduced the esteemed chief guest and hosted the entire event.

 The occasion was graced with the presence of Professor Vivek Ranjan Sinha, Dean of University Instruction, Panjab University.

With a rich experience of more than 25 years in academic and industrial areas, Professor Rajendra B Kakde has published more than 125 national and international research papers with his area of research surrounding impurity profiling, bioanalysis, bioactive compounds, natural products, etc. Professor Kakde highlighted the responsibilities of a Pharmacist and various avenues in the profession of Pharmacy. He emphasized the emergence of pharma companies, domestically as well as internationally, and encouraged the students to explore different opportunities in this sector.

The winners of different competitions were felicitated at the end of the ceremony with certificates and cash prizes, followed by a vote of thanks by Professor Bhupinder Singh Bhoop. 

Around 180 participants attended the valedictory function, including distinguished guests and UIPS faculty.
