PUAA and UICET Celebrate Azadi Ka Mahotsav

Panjab University has been enthusiastically participating in the initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture, and achievements. Panjab University Alumni Association in association with Dr.SSBUICET, Panjab University, Chandigarh as a part of the celebrations  organised a variety of competitions, including presentations, monologues, and vlogs on March 11, 2022. Over 100 students participated in the event which is part of the  Chandigarh administration’s iconic week of the grand celebrations from March 6 to March 13, 2022. PU has been organising various social and cultural programs along with demonstrations of technical and scientific achievements. PU is aiming to make it a ‘Jan-Utsav’ in the spirit of ‘Jan-Bhagidari’ wherein various stakeholders including alumni, faculty, staff, and students are enthusiastically participating.

Dean Alumni Relations, PU Prof Anupama Sharmain her welcome address highlighted the objective of the event and stressed upon the five pillars of the celebrations:  Freedom Struggle, Ideas at 75, Achievements at 75, Actions at 75 and Resolves at 75. Amrit” means elixir, ambrosia, or nectar while “utsav” means celebrations, festival or jubilee and in more literal sense is elevation, rising, height, enterprise, undertaking, beginning, or blossoming.

Prof. Amrit Pal Toor, Chairperson, Dr. SSBUICET welcomed the students in the event and wished them good luck. She highlighted that this is the fist offline event after COVID 19 Pandemic and the institute is really happy to welcome their students back to their campus. 

The judges for the presentation round were Prof. Monical Munjial (Ex-Chairperson, Centre for Social Welfare, P.U.) and Prof. Ritu Gupta. Teams competed against each other in the competition and presented their views on the pillars of Atam Nirbhar Bharat and the historical importance of self-reliance. Kuldeep Kumar, Rachna Chaudhary and Manider kaur emerged victorious in the presentation competition.

Dr Twinkle Bedi judged the monologue competition on the theme “Atam Nirbhar Bharat”. This was an intense competition filled with dramatics, recitations, and speeches. The winners of the monologue competition were Pappu Kumar and Shivani.

Prof. Sonia Sharma and Prof. Harjit Kaur were the judges for vlogs. Having shown an incredible video of Dr. SSBUICET, Sahil Kamboj, Ravnoor kaur, and Aman singh emerged as the winners for the vlog contest.

National Science Day 2022

The Chemical Society, Department of Chemistry and Centre for Advanced Studies in Chemistry, Panjab University Sector 14 Chandigarh celebrated National Science Day 2022 on 3rd March 2022 to commemorate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, catalysed and supported by Panjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) and NCSTC, DST, Govt. Of India, under the able guidance of Prof Raj Kumar, Honourable Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Sonal Singhal, Chairperson. The event was organized by Dr. Varinder kaur, President, Chemical Society. Various competitions “I am Smarticus”: The Science Quiz, “Let the Colors Speak”: Rangoli Competition, “Ideas Picturized:” Poster Presentation, “Let’s Recycle:” Best out of Waste and Extempore, on the theme ‘Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future’ were held were held for students of Panjab University Chandigarh. Pranav (M.Sc. II, Department of Chemistry), Rohan Sharma (B.Sc. III, Department of Biochemistry), and Ankita (M.Sc. II, Department of Chemistry), bagged 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in Poster Presentation, respectively. The students of M.Sc. II of Department of Chemistry, Ankita and Anurag got the 1st prize; Mansangeet and Kritika got the 2nd prize; Bhumika and Parneet bagged the 3rd prize in “Let´s Recycle competition”. Priya (M.Sc. I, Department of Chemistry), Keshav Kant (B.Sc. III, Department of Biochemistry), and Ishika Gupta (M.Sc. II, Department of Chemistry), were awarded with 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in “Extempore” event, respectively. Amit Sharma and Chetan Verma of M.Sc. I, Department of Chemistry, Keshav Kant and Rohan Sharma of B.Sc. III, Department of Biochemistry, Vipul Sharma and Maheep Kaur Gill of M.Sc. II, Department of Chemistry got the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in the Science Quiz competition. Nancy Koundal, Kostubh Gaur, and Harsimran Kaur of B.Sc. III, Department of Chemistry, were awarded with the 1st prize, Ankita (M.Sc. II, Department of Chemistry), Aashni Khurana and Dixon Bhoriwal of B.Sc. III, Department of Chemistry, were awarded with the 2nd prize, Aishwarya, Ridhima, and Garima B.Sc. III, Department of Biochemistry were awarded with the 3rd prize in the Rangoli competition. In addition, Tanvi Sharma, Damanpreet Singh, Nitya Aggarwal (M.Sc. II, Department of Chemistry) got the consolation prize in the Rangoli competition. The aim of the event was fulfilled by sheer zeal and zest of all the organizers, participants and the guests.

Dr Suman Mor received the National Award for Science Communication

Dr. Suman Mor, Chairperson and Associate Professor, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University Chandigarh, has received the “National Award for Outstanding Efforts in Science and Technology Communication through Innovative and Traditional methods” in an event held on National Science Day 2022 in Vigyan Bhavan.

                  The award carries a citation, a memento and a cash prize of two lakh rupees. This award is presented by National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India (GoI) every year to an individual for outstanding contribution in the field of science and Technology communication and to promote scientific temper.

                  This prestigious award was given by  Dr. Jitender Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science and Technology; Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Government of India. The award ceremony was graced by Dr. S Chandrasekhar, Secretary, DST; Dr. Shekhar C Mande, DG, CSIR; Dr. M Ravichandran, Secretary, MoES; Dr. Balram Bhargav, Secretary, DHR, GoI. During the event, Dr. Nakul Parashar, Director, Vigyan Prasar, presented an overview of Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate, after which national awards were presented.

                  Dr. Suman Mor has been working in the area of environment and public health for over 21 years. Dr Mor was also recently listed in the top 2% of scientists of the world as per Stanford University and Scopus ranking for 2020 and 2021.

                  Dr Mor is also appointed as Nodal Faculty for Chandigarh under National Clean Air Programme (NCAP)  by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Govt. of India. She is actively involved in building scientific temperament to create awareness and motivate action for better health and the environment. Her research focuses on solving common environmental problems, e.g., air pollution, solid waste and wastewater management. She aims to communicate and disseminate scientific knowledge to the public in a way that creates awareness about emerging environmental concerns and motivates them for continued action to ensure sustainability.

Recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Mor led the development of ‘Information, Education and Communication’ materials with scientific knowledge to empower the public for their role in disease prevention. She also developed a public health shield to promote COVID-19 appropriate behaviors. Dr. Mor has developed awareness materials to educate the masses about source segregation of municipal waste, including the safe disposal of COVID-19 household waste during the pandemic.

                  Prof. Mor is actively engaged in conducting capacity-building training and awareness workshops for professionals and the general public. She also developed a booklet to create awareness on ‘How to celebrate pollution-free and eco-friendly Diwali’, to engage the public in celebrating safe and eco-friendly Diwali.

                  Her work on bringing the National Green Tribunal key judgment in simple languages with pictorial was widely appreciated as it helped to educate and empower citizens about their rights for a healthy environment and to protect the most vulnerable. Dr. Mor also developed an ‘Eco-Health Calendar’ to raise awareness and educate citizens about the important days marked to promote public health and the environment.

Research paper of PU faculty published in a reputed journal.

Research article titled as “Destabilized Carbocations Caged in Water Microdroplets: Isolation and Real-Time Detection of Alpha-Carbonyl Cation Intermediates” has been published in the Journal of American Chemical Society (Impact factor 15.42). This journal is one of the top, very prestigious and leading journals in the chemistry domain. A paper is appearing in this journal from Panjab University after 15 years, and is also the first from UIET.

Mirza Ghalib Birthday Celebrated at PU

Birthday of great romantic Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib was celebrated with enthusiasm and gusto by the Department of Urdu Panjab University Chandigarh, here on Monday. Prominent academic and literary personalities, research scholars and students participated in the program organized online.

Speaking in the occasion, Dr. Ali Abbas, Coordinator of the Urdu Department said that Mirza Ghalib was a popular secular poet appreciated by all sections of the society. His poetry provided food for thought in all his composition, which left an everlasting impact on every body’s mind. Mirza Ghalib was an innovative poet, who would continue to inspire coming generation for many centuries, he added.

In their papers presented in the occasion, Research Scholar Mohd Shareef and Mohd Sultan touched various aspect of Mirza Ghalib’s life. Dr. Zareen Fatima recited a Ghazal of Mirza Ghalib. The students of various classes also recited Ghazals, couplets and others anecdotes associated with the life of legendary Urdu poet.

Paying rich tributes, Prof. Rehana Parveen (Retd.) said that the contribution of Mirza Ghalib to Urdu literature was second to none.

In his vote of thanks, Dr. Zulfiqar of Persian Department highlighted that apart from Urdu, Ghalib was also a great scholar of Persian and Arabic languages.

French Delegation visits PU

A French Delegation, a part of the French Embassy in India visited the University of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The delegation consisted of Dr. Fabien Chareix, Attaché for Scientific and Academic Cooperation, French Embassy in India, Mr. Baptiste Fondin, Project Manager – Scientific and Academic Cooperation, Leah Maria Therese Paul, Project Manager – Academic Partnerships & Alumni, Ophelie Belin, Director Alliance Francoise, Chandigarh and Nidhi Chopra, Manager Campus France, Chandigarh. From PU, Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean International Students, Prof. J.K.Goswamy, Director, UIET and Dr. Rohit Sharma, Chairperson, Microbial Biotechnology, interacted with the delegation.

The members interacted with the faculty of UIET and  discussed the possible academic and research collaborative programmes and planned to draw a roadmap for different joint ventures.  The delegation visited different laboratories in UIET and were appreciative of the facilities available.

UIPS-PU GETS FIRST AUSTRALIAN INNOVATION PATENT

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University has been granted First Australian Innovation Patent entitled “NANOPARTICLE HYDROGEL COMPOSITION FOR THE TREATMENT OF NEUROPATHIC PAIN.” This novel gel is developed for diabetic and cancer chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain, which will target the dorsal root ganglion, the leading target site responsible for peripheral neuropathy and targeting of which will also block central effects. This gel being developed is one of a kind as it is patient compliant due to its once-a-day application and long-term impact with negligible side effects. To date, the therapy available for diabetic and cancer neuropathic pain includes drugs having a lot of side effects and no significant relief.

            This technology has been invented by Dr Ranjana Bhandari and Dr Anurag Kuhad from University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Dr Jyoti K Paliwal, Director, Phaex Consulting, Gurgaon, Haryana, Ex-Director B. V. Patel PERD Centre, Ahmadabad, Ex- VP Wockhardt Ltd, Mumbai, and Ex-Director, Ranbaxy, Gurgaon, Haryana.

This technology is developed under financial assistance of Pfizer-IIT Delhi and DST-UT Chandigarh grant 2020. Patent filing assistance and finance were sanctioned by Professor Manu Sharma, Honorary Director, Centre for Industry Institute Partnership Programme (CIIPP), Panjab University, Chandigarh. Indian Patent Application has also been filed for this technology. This technology would be licensed out to the industry after its completion of clinical studies.

Awareness session on Type 1 Diabetes at PU

Dr. HSJ Dental College and Hospital and Rotaract Club HSJ Dental College in collaboration with The Diabesties Foundation and DATRI organized a joint awareness session on Type 1 Diabetes awareness and Stem Cell Donation Awareness at Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital.

            The seminar was attended by over 150 NSS volunteers and rotaractors. The event was organized under the guidance of NSS Programme Officer, Dr. Vivek Kapoor.  Rotaract President Himank Mehta encouraged the students to get themselves registered for stem cell donation.
