Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh addressed  around 100 Assistant Professors of the University today in a virtual meeting. He stressed that the faculty  are the pillars of the University who can play a great role in the enhancement of the perception of PU . PU VC urged all to join hands in taking a leap in next three years for the University.

In his address, he said that the need of the hour for the  University is to bring in a professional attitude by changing the mindset and involving more corporate’s perspective into teaching . He further stressed to  create a niche for PU not only on national level but also on international level. He urged on giving research orientation to students right from the beginning of their career. It is important for the faculty to tap the potential of the students. He also urged them to take multi-disciplinary projects and focus on patents and citations. He informed that a nodal officer has been appointed by PU for filing of patents. They were also asked to explore collaborations with a focus on commercial deliverables. He brought the point of contributing in social initiatives for the society in order to provide holistic development to the students. PU VC asked them to focus on getting their research published in High Impact Journals.

Various suggestions were taken from Dean International Students, Dean Alumni Relations, Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Director, CIL/SAIF, Director, Computer Centre and other Assistant Professors present, for enhancing the visibility of PU in the coming times. First meeting of Interdisciplinary Task Force Held

For Detailed News-

The first meeting of the newly constituted Interdisciplinary Task Force was held today under the Chairmanship of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. While addressing, PU VC strongly expressed that the thrust areas in the interest of PU be listed out with the interest of society, global perspective and government priority in mind. He informed that he will be integrating all the lab facilities available in PU and urged all to focus on industry oriented research, patents and citations. He further added that the task force  has been constituted  mainly to enhance the global image of PU and to increase outputs for research/teaching for enhancing PU rankings. 

 He urged for enhanced interdepartmental communication to fill the gaps for the research going on in various labs of PU. The need of the hour is to collaborate and work out modalities where Centre for Industry Institute Partnership Programme (CIIPP),Management and Industrial links come to the help of departments.

During discussions, it was also felt that the industry be involved in the Board of Studies and Board of Controls for making of the syllabi and teaching to prioritize the research areas which will enable students to be industry ready.

It was strongly felt that more and more scientists should be encouraged for patenting their research work. For this, PU VC informed that a nodal officer has been appointed for encouraging the writing for getting the patents. For this, hiring a professional patent agent  was also suggested apart from exploring options of  Govt agencies who give free services for filing the patents.

There was a suggestion that under the Corporate Social Responsibility programme, the industry be tapped for funding the research projects. For this, CIIPP and Management can help the departments.

PU VC urged for more and more collaborations with the industry for the visibility of PU. It was  to have interdisciplinary research on environment, health,disaster management, public health and public policy. The industrial feedback will be taken for good research work . There was also a suggestion to have a Science & Technology hub on PU website with thrust areas mentioned therein under which, the links for the faculty to be provided for better coordination.

Webinar on Gender Manthan at Social Work, PU

Centre for Social Work and Department of Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology, Panjab University organized a webinar under the Series titled “Gender Manthan” today.

The idea behind Gender Manthan is  to sensitize students about Gender related issues. The distinguished speaker of the webinar was Professor Chander Shekhar from the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, under the Ministry of Health and Family welfare, Government of India.

Professor Chander Shekhar spoke on “ Declining Fertility Desire and Changing Sex Preference for Children in Punjab: Demographic and Gender Role Implications”.

The welcome address was delivered by Professor Paru Bal Sidhu, Chairperson, Department of Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology, Panjab University.

UIPS organized a popular talk on “COVID-19 Prevention and Control”

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, Chandigarh  organized a popular talk under UIPS Expert Talk Series on “COVID-19 Prevention and Control” .

The event was spearheaded by Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson, UIPS and Professor Poonam Piplani, Convener, Lecture Organising Team of UIPS.

The Chief Guest of the occasion Dr Gurinder Bir Singh, Director Health Services (DHS) Punjab shared his views on the down trending graph of the 2nd wave and the number of lives lost, but he appreciated the strength shown by everyone during these tough times and urged people to keep following COVID protocols to prevent the third and consecutive waves.

Professor Mini P Singh,Department of Virology, PGIMER gave an explicit overview of COVID 19, covering key points like, when and how to mask; proper ways of wearing masks; prone exercise; home care for people with suspected and confirmed infections, busting myths about vaccination. She said that masks with exhalable valves are not good whereas cloth plus surgical masks provide 85% protection. She also covered public dealing during pandemic and protocols to be followed when entering house.

 Professor Mini P Singh is the part of the rapid response team of the UT administration and coronavirus committee of the PGIMER, Chandigarh.

elaborated disease course of COVID 19, high risk factors and pre-emptive strategies to be followed during infection. He reiterated to strictly prohibit use of steroids, blood tests and CT scans in case of mild illness and educated about LONG COVID (when symptoms remain more than 4 weeks), post COVID complications, coronosomnia and mucormycosis.

E-YUVA centre at Panjab University Gets Rs. 2.36 crore

An amount of Rs. 2.36 crore has been sanctioned for three years with Dr. Rohit Sharma, Microbial Biotechnology, Panjab University Chandigarh ,designated as the Project Investigator for Empowering Youth for Undertaking Value Added Innovative Translational Research (E-YUVA) scheme.

This aims to inculcate and promote research and society oriented entrepreneurial innovation among young students and researchers. Under this scheme the E-YUVA Centres (EYCs) provides pre-incubation to innovators along with financial support. The pre-incubation (UIC) has been upgraded to E-YUVA centre.

This centre will provide pre-incubation/incubation, financial and mentoring support to innovators and inculcate entrepreneurial culture. 

Incubation centre EYC has been in alliance with the vision of the  Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raj Kumar. He has been focusing on the importance of entrepreneurial set up that is going to shape a new India and that we will have to move ahead, taking young and the old together in this initiative. His vison is to integrate and consolidate different verticals of science under an umbrella of research and innovation. He emphasizes on the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship in the ever-dynamic global scenario.

Dr. Rohit Sharma considers this as a key step in empowering and nurturing young entrepreneurs in multidisciplinary areas of work in the northern region of the country. This centre will not only focus on the Entrepreneurs from the University and R &D institutions but also bring on board teams of Innovators from colleges or other graduation institutions. He successfully led the pre-incubation and incubation that was established in the year 2016 with generous funding support received from BIRAC. The pre-incubation has which now has been upgraded to E-YUVA Centre.

Since its inception, the pre-incubation and incubation, has been successful in having more than a score of Innovators on board as resident startups and/or entrepreneurs. It has multiple other success stories with respect to patents, awards and honors, funding, publications, a number of Proof of Concept (POCs), prototypes, products and large number of Innovators transforming to successful start ups, tie ups with industry and multiple follow up funding. A Roadmap to the Career Options In Biophysics Discussed at PU

The Placement Cell of the Department of Biophysics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized today a virtual outreach program, ‘A Roadmap to the Career Options In Biophysics’  to spread awareness and generate interest in the field of Biophysics. 

The virtual meet was convened by Dr. Avneet Saini ,Chairperson and Dr. Naveen Kaushal ,Assistant Professor; Placement and Outreach Incharge of the Biophysics Department. Over 110 students from different colleges attended the Outreach Program. 

Prof. Meena Sharma, Honorary Director, Central Placement Cell, PU presided over the virtual meet . In her opening remarks, she appreciated the time and efforts invested by the organizers in making this outreach program a reality. She emphasized the need of organizing such programs to guide students in making informed decisions about their future.

Dr. Avneet Saini introduced the students to biophysics as an interdisciplinary arena that bridges the gap between biological and physical sciences. 

Dr. Naveen Kaushal gave a presentation on the topic ‘Outreach and Placement’ and made the students aware of the scope and various career opportunities that the students can pursue after doing a course in Biophysics. Highly distinguished alumni of the Department gave their testimonials to the students about how Biophysics helped shape their careers. 

Dr. Pooja Khanna shared her journey of becoming a Data Scientist at Green Shield, Canada, and how she chose her passion for the same stemming from Biophysics. Ms. Sonika Sharma, Senior Manager, Medical Writer, Paraxel, Mohali shared her learning and experiences on her path from Biophysics to Parexel. Dr. Preeti Bhardwaj, Scientific Officer B, NCBS, TIFR, Bangalore, and Dr. Rishi Bhardwaj, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Yale University, USA, narrated their stories from being a Ph.D. student at the Department to follow their dreams in their respective careers.

PU Resumes full day Working wef 10th June

Chandigarh June 9, 2021

Panjab University, Chandigarh, after reviewing the status of COVID-19 cases in the campus and on the basis of recommendations of the Committee, constituted for this purpose, the Competent Authority  has resumed the office timings of the University  from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with full strength wef 10th June,2021.

For Detailed News-

The competent authority has approved following measures to contain the spread of ongoing Corona pandemic, to be observed by all the offices of the Panjab University: –  

1. The Office timings of the University shall be resumed to normal working hours, i.e. from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with full strength.  However, depending upon the staffing pattern and laydown of the office space, etc. if the Head of the Office/Department is of the view that staggering of timings/attendance is required to ensure proper compliance of COVID – 19 protocols, then he/she may stagger the timings and attendance of staff by issuing proper office orders giving appropriate justification for the same, subject to the condition that the normal day to day work as well as time bound assignments relating to the offices may not get affected.   

2. There shall not be any public dealing up to 25.06.2021 except with the prior appointment of the concerned HOD that too for urgent issues only. 

3. The Office staff shall avoid community lunch and any kind of get together to ensure proper physical distancing.   

4. All staff must ensure appropriate COVID-19 compliant behavior, i.e., proper wearing of masks (covering both mouth and nose), proper physical distance, regular handwashing/sanitization, etc. 

5. The entry and exit points shall be properly regulated to avoid any crowding.  

6. The lifts shall work with the capacity of only two passengers and one operator.

UIET Gets grant of 2.13 Crore For Skill Development

University Institute of Engg and Technology, Panjab University bags Rs 2.13 crore grant for skill and entrepreneurship development in Electronic waste management from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), which will  be supervised by Dr. Vishal Sharma, Assistant Professor, UIET, Dr. Manish Dev Sharma, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Physics and Dr. Amit Chaudhry, Assistant Professor, UIET.

Panjab University is one of the premier universities providing technical education in India today. In its endeavor to provide modern education preparing students for the future, the university under the leadership and guidance of Prof Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor has now initiated with the support of MeitY, a certificate program on e-waste dismantling. The Project is to be implemented at UIET with the collaboration of Private Recycler M/s Exigo Recycling Pvt Ltd, Noida.

Electronic waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the world today and India ranks among the top 3 countries in terms of the quantum of e-waste generated on an annual basis. More than 90 percent of this waste is managed in the informal sector which leads to environmental and health hazards. Panjab University conceptualized first of its kind project whereby such actors and others can be formally trained on dismantling techniques through a certificate course. This will not only lead to addition of workforce in this sector leading to Atma-nirbhar Bharat but also add to skilled workforce under Skill India. This will lead to creation of resource efficiency and a circular economy in the country providing a boost to the electronics sector as a whole.

Mayor visits Mauli Complex

Chandigarh, June 8:- Sh. Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, Chandigarh today visited ward No.24 i.e. Mauli Complex to review the ongoing works at the area and joined ‘Swachhata hi Sewa’ drive in the area alongwith Sh. Anil Kumar Dubey, area councilor, Sh. Shailender Singh, Chief Engineer, Sh. K.P. Singh, SE, Horticulture, Dr. Amrit Warring, Medical Officer of Health, concerned Executive Engineers and other officials.

During the visit the Mayor and team of officers visited booth market in Mauli Complex, where the Mayor asked the concerned engineers to prepare status report about the market and get the maintenance work done in this area. He asked the sanitation inspector to maintain proper cleanliness in the market area.

The Mayor and team took round of the streets at Mauli Complex and instructed the concerned officers to repair the paver blocks in road berms and repair the dug up roads. The Mayor asked the executive engineer of Electrical wing to maintain the street lights properly in the area and repair the broken lights.

During the drive required pruning of trees were also done by the horticulture wing and lifted the horticulture waste from the road berms and open areas of ward No.24. The Mayor also distributed face masks to the shopkeepers and local residents besides pamphlets depicting precautionary measures to be taken during the COVID-19 and maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings.

“Preparing Roadmap for Implementation of NEP-2020” Discussed at PU

A webinar series on ‘Preparing Roadmap for Implementation of NEP-2020’ was jointly organized by Department of Education and University Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management, Panjab University, Chandigarh which was inaugurated by Prof Raj Kumar Vice Chancellor.

In his Inaugural address, PU VC stressed upon revision and revamping of  the education structure, as per NEP2020.. He focused on the importance of national and international collaborations through MOU and the Research and Student exchange programmes etc.which bring visibility of  the University. He also stressed that based on these series, a policy document shall be prepared which will be sent to Ministry of Education for reference.  

Prof. Amit Kauts, Dean Faculty of Education, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar was the resource person of the day. His topic was “Digital initiatives, their integration and use for improving quality in education’. He emphasized on a more holistic and multidisciplinary education, internationalization with an aim of restoring India’s position of Vishwa Guru, technology use and integration etc.

Further, an initiative of ICT enabled teaching learning pedagogy improves the visibility of self and of the university one is working with. He emphasised that in NEP, technology is the centre of various programs like Swayam, Swayam Prabha, National Digital Library etc. and through the use of ICT,  teaching and learning will improve as technological interventions will be thrust area for every academic body. 

The webinar was attended by 70 participants which were a mix of  students staff and faculty from varied institutions.
